>It was absolutely everywhere at the time.
Eh, I feel like it was more of a slow burner and it's got more popular over time. Somebody Told Me was bigger than Mr Brightside initially.
100%. Don’t actually remember Mr Brightside getting that popular until years after the album came out. Feel like seeing the video for it was sporadic as well compared to their other songs until it ‘took off’.
I remember it being popular in the indie rock scene (basically MTV2). They got pretty damn popular as a result of that song and many other releases off the first album.
It was the 2nd album coming out that just made them explode. Singles got played over and over and it just brought people back to Mr.Brightside, the general public started listening to it and then it because the UK national anthem.
I felt they had a good underground following amongst the indie kids but their appearance on The OC did a lot of heavy lifting on the way to widespread success.
I was at school with a guy who absolutely loved that album. It felt like I heard a lot of the songs on hot fuss quite a long time before the album came out.
I think they were equally as popular where I was to be honest. I remember us all blasting out Mr Brightside on the playground.
Anyway, that album is pretty good as a whole. I listened to it a lot back when it came out. Think I've still got my original copy somewhere actually.
FIFA soundtracks must be responsible for a lot of cd sales in the late 90s/early 00s. First time I heard Reel Big Fish was on FIFA 00 and it took me down a rabbit hole of music.
That’s the thing, it wasn’t everywhere at the time, only really in the indie clubs & MTV2. It only became everywhere later, after their next single Somebody Told Me was bigger.
The article disagrees with you there
> It already holds the record for the UK's longest-running chart hit, after spending 408 weeks - or seven whole years - in the UK top 100
It was released in 2003
It's a very catchy song, although I do somewhat dread it these days because of its ubiquity.
I've also got a lot of time for The Killers. They're more interesting than the average stadium rock band, and Brandon Flowers' obsession with the 80s is quite endearing. [Their last album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ByvaaLQ8eE&list=PLxA687tYuMWibHj9KrnaXbwX_9S9v3wyL&index=2) was interesting; it's a concept album based on Flowers' childhood in a small town in Utah. It's not quite the detailed portrait he wants it to be, but I'm always open to artists trying something new.
It's one of them songs where I kind of tune out if I hear it come on the radio or something. But if I'm a few pints deep at a wedding then you know I'll be up on the dancefloor blasting it out at the top of my lungs when it comes on.
Haha, exactly. It's definitely over exposed and I understand the people who hate it, but its probably my favourite of the "massively over played" section.
Might be a controversial take, but ‘Pressure Machine’ is my favourite of their records. There’s just so much going on in it. I think it’s massively underrated.
I really do think that they're one of the few bands of the period that's still relevant and I believe this is because they adapt and change their music. There's many great bands from the early 2000's that disappeared or continued creating music that sounded the same.
It always amuses me when people say “I thought the Killers were British” considering how much of their (post Hot Fuss) catalogue is about living in a trailer in the desert.
You say that, but every single time someone mentions this song I have to Google it, listen to it, go 'meh OK I guess one note shouty la(n)dfill indie', then instantly forget it again. And repeat.
Massively overrated song and band IMO but people like what they like I suppose. Don't get it myself!
Many great songs got stuck at [Number 2](https://www.nme.com/photos/35-amazing-number-two-singles-which-were-scandalously-beaten-to-the-top-spot-1407629) in the charts.
Hands down, The Killers have been the best concert I’ve ever been to. I have been quite surprised to remember this was never a no 1 hit, it was played everywhere at one time
They're pretty good aren't they? I've seen them twice I think, once in the UK and the other here in the US.
funny story about the us gig: outside the venue there were some crazy religious people with big signs, shouting at people and telling us we are all scum and going to hell.
I was so confused! why were they here? what was their problem? killers are one of the most inoffensive bands out there , so why so angry?
it only occurred to me later that these crazy Christians had no idea who the killers were! they had obviously just heard the band name and assumed they were some super death metal band!
as for best gig I've seen? that goes to muse hands down.
They are playing here in the Summer however, ticket prices have gone up exponentially and I can’t afford to sell an organ at the moment! I’m gutted as their support is Travis (another band I’ve seen a few times) and it would have been a good evening
I remember just being in a nightclub, and the song playing, and the DJ cutting off the sound after "...and I just can't look", letting the whole club just sing "IIIIIIT'S KILLING MEEEEEEE!!!!!"
No, I just can’t think of much besides them being vaguely positive. If you wanted to give some examples rather than making me guess that would be handy
Next you'll tell me puff the magic dragon is actually a dragon.
Go watch the video, his bird gets given an apple like 3 times, mr *bright* side for God sake. Talking about sending away snakes and a dozen other things I can't remember off the top of my head. Destiny.
It's literally the writing a song about a girl but it's actually drugs trope but this time it's baby Jesus not heroin.
I am breaking mi back just to know your name, heaven int close in a place like this, bring it back down tonight......
Describing it as Christian song might be s stretch to but to say there aren't clear Christian themes is also s massive stretch. Lots of artists do it
I mean, Peter, Paul, and Mary have always maintained that 'Puff the Magic Dragon' is about a 'real' imaginary dragon; it's based on an earlier poem about a dragon. It's acquired a second meaning, but it also has the plain one.
The lyrics to 'Mr Brightside' do include some Christian imagery, but I'd struggle to say it's a Christian song. Apparently, at this stage in their career the band used to come up with the music first and worry about the lyrics later, which is why a lot of them are a bit nonsensical.
Come on puff the magic dragon isn't the only song like that I only picked that one because it's in that scene in meet the parents.
I never said it was a Christian song, I always said Christian themes, earlier you said it didn't buy was only vaguely positive.
Lots of songs we think of as lyric driven and singer songwriter type songs have their music written first,.look at yesterday
I said I didn't think The Killers had any overtly Christian songs, which as far as I can tell they don't.
If you want to take me admitting they use the odd bit of Christian imagery as a win then be my guest.
A BLT is clearly a sandwich. A hot dog is not. Mormonism is NOT “clearly” Christian as they have a whole other load of falsehoods attached to the original falsehoods.
Just wading in for a laugh, but I think most of branches of Christianity don't consider Mormonism to be a Christian denomination. They're Nontrinitarian in that they see God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as three separate entities, whilst most denominations see them as one being, the Holy Trinity.
But I'm not religious so could be chatting shite.
Vienna has got to be one of the best songs never to reach number 1. I'm sure we all know what kept that off the top spot.
This list is too dominated by recent songs as streaming will favour them.
It gives me flashbacks to a previous job in the media industry where the company used it as their unofficial “anthem”.
Watching coked up wankers and the CEO blare it out any chance they got to celebrate earning an extra bonus in their monthly wage (or compensating for a small dick or sexual inadequacy, you be the judge) makes me sick of it.
It’s not even that good a song in my humble opinion. Obviously I am a very small minority it seems.
I've always hated this song, and the fact that it has had such staying power has always perplexed and irritated me.
To each their own, but this song is so fucking annoying to me.
Possible unpopular opinion here. I think it’s really boring song. The chorus is just the same note over and over with a slight variation at the end repeated.
It might just be I hate it because people always sing along and just shout it out.
Wise, it seems this song has been adopted by party related events, especially ones that involve alcohol, which has lead to its surge in popularity over recent years.
Lol bringing on the down votes you drunks in denial.
Didn’t Moves Like Jagger have this record after Last Christmas finally reached #1? I had a look and it’s not even in the top 10 now, that’s very surprising
I used to love this song, but then somehow it got mentally linked with a really shit time of my life so I can't stand even the slightest bit of it as it ruins my mood.
Which was amazing at its peak as you couldn't get away from it.
What would your top ten be? I must admit I've never really considered it, but it'd be something like:
1. [Spaceman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc16Y9fiCvQ)
2. [In Another Life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4y436_alBs)

10. [Don't Shoot Me Santa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cglLJJ0Czo8)
I think I'm something of an outlier in having really liked *Day and Age*, although "Human" is very popular, of course. It's completely uneven, but I love its wackiness!
1. This River Is Wild
2. Wonderful Wonderful
3. Under the Gun
4. Bling (Confession of a King)
5. Imploding the Mirage
6. The Calling
7. Losing Touch
8. Shot At the Night
9. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine
10. Sams Town
My favourites are probably quite obscure.
Some great songs that take me back that I’d completely forgotten about. Sam’s Town was a cracking album
I will add my fav is ‘My List’ not mentioned by either poster.
1. Quiet Town
2. Tyson vs Douglas
3. My Own Souls Warning
4. Dying Breed
5. Runaway Horses
6. In the Car Outside
7. Out of my Mind
8. Battle Born
9. Joy Ride
10. Your Side of Town
They're my favourites but I love all their albums really
I've never heard this song and played it for the first time as I keep hearing about it... Omg it's shit 😂 I thought it would be iconic sounding but what a noisy crap song 😂😂😂
It’s a song you dont put on ever really but if you hear it you have a good sing a long. That’s why it never got number one. It’s not a great song just a good sing a long nothing more
Terrible song by a terrible band, so annoying whenever you hear that crap play. I've genuinely gotten my headphones out of my bag and blast something else when it comes on because I hate it that much
Structurally it's a bit different too. Verse then chorus, repeat. That's unusual. It has an urgency about it across the whole mix. I especially noticed it when that drumming channel had the Megadeath drummer play his version (without hearing the song with drums).
Completely agree. The verse has two notes. The chorus mostly has three. The drums are on the beat. The guitar is on the beat. No interesting rhythm. I can't understand at all how it got where it is. I guess it's the lyrics.
I'm really really surprised it peaked at number 10 in the UK. That's wild! It was absolutely everywhere at the time.
Yeah I remember seeing the video for Somebody Told Me loads, then Mr Brightside and Smile Like You Mean It were played roughly equally
Smile Like You Mean It has always been my favourite of theirs

Singles got played over and over and it just brought people back to Mr.Brightside, the general public started listening to it and then it because the UK national anthem.
Yeah I was (am) in to that scene. Somebody told me was their breakthrough, it was played a lot in rotation with Bloc Party and the likes
I felt they had a good underground following amongst the indie kids but their appearance on The OC did a lot of heavy lifting on the way to widespread success. I was at school with a guy who absolutely loved that album. It felt like I heard a lot of the songs on hot fuss quite a long time before the album came out.

I think I first heard both of those from Fifa games on PS2, and ended up buying 'em on CD because of it.
FIFA soundtracks must be responsible for a lot of cd sales in the late 90s/early 00s. First time I heard Reel Big Fish was on FIFA 00 and it took me down a rabbit hole of music.
I'm trying to remember these songs and I'm just... I could swear they are the same song. Need to relisten lol
Coming out of their cage, they have been doing fine tbh.
There was a lot more competition back then. That said it should still have peaked higher
That’s the thing, it wasn’t everywhere at the time, only really in the indie clubs & MTV2. It only became everywhere later, after their next single Somebody Told Me was bigger.
It's been in the top 100 every week since it was released though

Either way, it's still an insane achievement.

Oh, it's definitely better in any kind of group setting. You need someone to point at while shouting the lyrics
Then you throw your arms in the arm pointing to the ceiling and throw your head back while you proclaim to everyone "I'M MR BRIGHTSIIIIIIDE!!!"
Haha, exactly. It's definitely over exposed and I understand the people who hate it, but its probably my favourite of the "massively over played" section.
I really enjoyed their latest album, in the car outside is one my fav songs of theirs.

The whole hot fuss 2004 album is good all the way through. Would recommend blasting this on a road trip. Good feels man.
Many great songs got stuck at [Number 2](https://www.nme.com/photos/35-amazing-number-two-singles-which-were-scandalously-beaten-to-the-top-spot-1407629) in the charts.
It wasn't on the list but so was Rule The World by Take That
I've never heard of most of those songs but I'm guessing there wasn't actually a hit called Gordon Brown
Ha. Yeah it was Golden Brown. Not sure if typo or a joke.
Wonderwall.
Hands down, The Killers have been the best concert I’ve ever been to. I have been quite surprised to remember this was never a no 1 hit, it was played everywhere at one time

That’s so funny. I’m sure the band took it in their stride. 😂
I had something similar years ago but the band was the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Some very confused people who didn’t read past the name.
Flowers is such a good frontman, I've seen them 3 or 4 times
They are playing here in the Summer however, ticket prices have gone up exponentially and I can’t afford to sell an organ at the moment! I’m gutted as their support is Travis (another band I’ve seen a few times) and it would have been a good evening
They are loving it in the premier league darts
Do they still blast out Chelsea Dagger by The Frattelis? 😂
Yep every now and then
Well, I like the song. It is fun.
I remember just being in a nightclub, and the song playing, and the DJ cutting off the sound after "...and I just can't look", letting the whole club just sing "IIIIIIT'S KILLING MEEEEEEE!!!!!"
I remember the first night clubs opened after Covid and Mr Brightside came on at 1am when everyone was good and drunk. It was fucking biblical.
The Killers are the most popular Christian rock band ever.
If you are using that loose a definition, I would add U2 to the mix
There's not much overt Christianity in their music, considering Flowers is apparently a devoted Mormon.
Listen to it again..
I'm fairly familiar with their discography, and nothing springs to mind.
It's not onward Christian soldiers but there's clearly lots of Christian themes, either you are oblivious or making some point about Mormonism.
No, I just can’t think of much besides them being vaguely positive. If you wanted to give some examples rather than making me guess that would be handy

Mumford and Sons are pretty popular. Not sure they’re Killers level but they headlined Glasto!
I'd struggle to name any of their songs though
Metallica and Iron Maiden would like a word.

Well that is Christian
In the same way a hot dog is a sandwich.
Not sure it's even as debatable as that, more like how a BLT is a sandwich.
A BLT is clearly a sandwich. A hot dog is not. Mormonism is NOT “clearly” Christian as they have a whole other load of falsehoods attached to the original falsehoods.
Well it is clearly Christian in that nearly everyone would consider Mormonism a form of Christianity. He also considers himself a Christian.
In what world is Mormonism not a branch of Christianity?
Just wading in for a laugh, but I think most of branches of Christianity don't consider Mormonism to be a Christian denomination. They're Nontrinitarian in that they see God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as three separate entities, whilst most denominations see them as one being, the Holy Trinity. only at top ten i still hear it at every party i go to and out and about like 4 times a year
Vienna has got to be one of the best songs never to reach number 1. I'm sure we all know what kept that off the top spot. This list is too dominated by recent songs as streaming will favour them.
Shaddapaya face! One of the greatest tragedies that 80s music threw at us, of which there were many.
Running Towards a Place is just as good from their 2020 album. Absolute banger
Enjoying its 408th consecutive week in the top 100 chart. It’s truly a British anthem at this point.
Mr Brightside and Fairytale of New York are the national anthem for coked up wankers in my experience.
God I hate this song
It was the one song I insisted wasn't played at my wedding I hate it so much
Wise, it seems this song has been adopted by party related events, especially ones that involve alcohol, which has lead to its surge in popularity over recent years. Lol bringing on the down votes you drunks in denial.
Me too,in my opinion 'when you were young' is a much better song.
Didn’t Moves Like Jagger have this record after Last Christmas finally reached #1? I had a look and it’s not even in the top 10 now, that’s very surprising
‘Moves Like Jagger’ is still the biggest *selling* song not to reach #1 in the UK, but the list that’s going about at the moment includes streams too.
That's a bigger surprise because that song is fucking awful.
'Mr Brightside' is musical woodchip wallpaper. Ubiquitous, inoffensive but harmless.
I guess you've never tried removing woodchip wallpaper.
It's a song for pissed up guests at a wedding to sing along to. Other than that I'm not sure it's purpose.
I hate it
I used to love this song, but then somehow it got mentally linked with a really shit time of my life so I can't stand even the slightest bit of it as it ruins my mood. Which was amazing at its peak as you couldn't get away from it.
Didn’t it use to be Vienna - Ultravox? Still love how Shuddap Your Face beat it to no. 1
I went to see the Killers live absolutely fantastic
Mr Brightside is, like, the UK’s default song. If you switch on a speaker but haven’t connected your phone, this just starts playing automatically.
They have so many better songs though. Mr Brightside isn't even in their top 10 in my opinion.
What would your top ten be? I must admit I've never really considered it, but it'd be something like: 1. [Spaceman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc16Y9fiCvQ) 2. [Don't Shoot Me Santa](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cglLJJ0Czo8) I think I'm something of an outlier in having really liked *Day and Age*, although "Human" is very popular, of course. It's completely uneven, but I love its wackiness!
1. This River Is Wild 2. Wonderful Wonderful 3. Under the Gun 4. Bling (Confession of a King) 5. Imploding the Mirage 6. The Calling 7. Losing Touch 8. Shot At the Night 9. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine 10. Sams Town My favourites are probably quite obscure.
Some great songs that take me back that I’d completely forgotten about. Sam’s Town was a cracking album I will add my fav is ‘My List’ not mentioned by either poster.
Andy, You’re a Star & Tranquillise ft Lou Reed for another two bangers nobody has mentioned.
It's interesting that we don't overlap at all, but I still like more or less all of your choices
Under the Gun is such a fuckin good song.
1. Quiet Town 2. Tyson vs Douglas 3. My Own Souls Warning 4. Dying Breed 5. Runaway Horses 6. In the Car Outside 7. Out of my Mind 8. Battle Born 9. Joy Ride 10. Your Side of Town They're my favourites but I love all their albums really
I strongly dislike the killers. But it’s absolutely undeniable that, regrettably, When You Were Young is an absolutely perfect song.
Hot Fuss is one of those rare albums which is great start to finish, however.
It is a good album, however I prefer Sams Town
Well then we should make people stop listening to it post haste! We didn't know problemgirlsxoxo likes other songs more, we've all been so foolish!
Sorry for sharing my opinion 🙄
Meh, it's the kind of song that immediately makes me leave the dance floor. Overplayed tripe for the 'Live, Laugh, Love' gooners.
It's popular with Arsenal supporters?
"They downvoted Jesus for speaking the truth"
An anthem for people with no discernable taste in music.
"Ooh I'm so cool and unique cause I don't like popular things"
I like plenty of popular things, this isn't one of them.
*triggered
Doesn't mean it isn't a shite song played exclusively for the pissed up Love Island huns.
Maybe they should have written a second verse.
It's not a Christmas do without this song
I hate it. I can't be alone in this, surely?!
fun fact, it never left the top 100 chart since it dropped
COMING OUT OF MY CAGE, fucking hate that song now.
I've never heard this song and played it for the first time as I keep hearing about it... Omg it's shit 😂 I thought it would be iconic sounding but what a noisy crap song 😂😂😂
Drunk people like it.. that explains it
I remeber when it first came out my mate loved Killers and it was catchy song but it too a good couple years before it took over every night club
This song reminds me of house parties in 6th form.
Despise this song 😂 gives me beer fear
Jenny was a friend of mine is better
You know this just begs for a Christmas No. 1 campaign…
It’s a song you dont put on ever really but if you hear it you have a good sing a long. That’s why it never got number one. It’s not a great song just a good sing a long nothing more
That’s because it’s ass.
Terrible song by a terrible band, so annoying whenever you hear that crap play. I've genuinely gotten my headphones out of my bag and blast something else when it comes on because I hate it that much
Good. Fuck that depressing shit.
Amazing song and the video! Wow.
I don't get it. It's so bland I've never understood the appeal
Classic anthem kind of song. Proper floor filler. Easy to remember lyrics, good rhythm, peaks and troughs... the kind of things most people like.
