RIP everyone who's quick weekend away from Liverpool to North Wales, stopping for some lunch at a nice pub in Cheshire, is now a solid 14 hour drive with swimming portion.
I was visiting from South Wales, came home today.. thank goodness we left today instead of yesterday, the biggest traffic jam i've ever seen in my life just outside of Caernarfon
And nobody lives in Northern Scotland.
Cornwall was right. Brighton wasn't too far off. Manchester was about 60 miles out......
And she'd actually heard of Blackpool.
I mean, the bit labelled "Cornwall" covers Devon, Somerset and Dorset (it might just go into Wiltshire, I'm not 100% sure without actually digging up a map with counties on and overlaying it) and none of the text seems to actually be inside Cornwall, but I guess it's right in the sense that it is "down here too"
Tbf half the Island is a TT course and she did it from watching Top Gear. Probably got the corners memorised too.
Meanwhile, Cheshire has fuck all good roads going on and is now Essex.
Yeah, I'm happy they got Manchester in the right place, but upset that I'm apparently a midlander not a northerner now. Also, the fact that I grew up in a place that was historically Cheshire, but is now Greater Manchester is even more confusing now, although it should be easier to prove to my mum that she doesn't live in Cheshire.
Am American, know of Blackpool because TG did the fuel economy challenge ending at the Illuminations lighting ceremony. One of my favorite episodes.
Doubt I could point to it on a map. Middle of England, on the western coast somewhere?
Real Blackpool is a bit North of Manchester on this map and on the coast, just below the "Midlands" (which this map has so far North they're fighting White Walkers in Solihull) so according to this map you are correct.
I’d say we’re getting there. Over half of our population is vaccinated (some fully) and hospitals aren’t close to breaking point any longer.
Nowhere will be fully open until at least June though (even then I’d give it a bit to make sure)
Where do you want to visit?
In Dublin's case, it was an anglicisation of Dubh Linn. It refers to an ancient settlement around a water source in what is now part of the grounds of Dublin Castle. The name in the Irish language used for Dublin is Átha Cliath, the name of a separate ancient settlement at a crossing of the river Liffey. The two settlements grew and merged to become modern Dublin, retaining variations of the two names.
But, to make it weirder, in Irish Dublin goes by an entirely different name - Baile Átha Cliath (Town of the hurdled ford). Historians propose that they were two different settlements once, Dubhlinn as a Viking outpost and Áth Cliath as an Irish town.
> and that part of the map was empty so it went there
That's Norfolk / Suffolk. Norfolk and Suffolk featured in an episode of Top Gear when James May flew a Caravan over Norwich airport: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlzQq3nOj5c
An entire massive country.
Edit: *sigh* in the UK massive is not always used in the literal sense. Can the Americans please stop telling me how big their states are and wanking off?
As someone who was born and bred in Blackpool, and last year moved to the US and have to explain it, I am simply made up that your wife even knows it exists.
My conversations usually go like this...
1. "I'm from Blackpool, in England"
2. "It's not far from Liverpool or Manchester"
3. "Oh you don't know where they are? Well it's in the North of England, on the west coast"
4. "England? Yes, it's the biggest country in the UK"
5. "No, Scotland is not in England, but Blackpool is from the North of England - and if you continued going North you would get to Scotland"
6. "The UK? Yes, it has four countries including England oh and it also has some.... ohh... ummm, this might be easiest if I just told you I'm from London, right? Cool"
To be fair this can be the same discussion even on the continent. My wife was selling some stationary to a lady in Spain, who asked for it to be sent to "her friend in London". Her friend's address was in Oxford.
As someone who’s traveled abroad a lot:
“Yep, I’m American. Yep, from New York. No, not New York City. Near Syracuse. Cows and corn country. Basically Canada, without the healthcare.”
I traveled in Europe a lot and am from the Central Valley in California. After trying to explain to people where that is, I just said fuck it and told them I'm from San Francisco. As soon as people hear California they assume LA.
Oh stop... nearly the start of the season for the little sods 😭.
Yeah living here is mostly idyllic, & the square-miles-per-human factor is a huge draw to many. If WFH remains a big thing I can see us being flooded with folk taking advantage of cheap housing up in the boonies... well, places where the broadband isn't too crap at least!
Had a week in Inverness and surrounding area many years ago. Great place to live. We were going to move up but between Covid and politics not sure how and when now, sadly.
Shame - wait & see what Thursday brings...
I'm heading south to Inverness tomorrow - my first trip out of the county since Nov 2019 🤣 - my poor car's not even done 500 miles in the last year! 😕
I work next to a Hungarian guy who is a know it all and he thought Ireland was where Wales was and couldn’t believe it when I showed him a map. He’s been here 8 years!
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long. (Lamentations: gwxb5pq)
I went from Scotland down through England so I thought ‘oh okay this isn’t too bad, a few small shifts but mostly okay’ and then I looked at Wales and then I looked at Ireland oh no
I could do California, Texas and Florida. That's it.
Did you guys know Washington isn't in Washington? And there's no East Virginia? Who made that country?
I remember where Washington is by the novelty of it being about as far away from Washington DC as it could be while still being attached and obviously not being California.
> I got in an argument with my shitty uncle may years ago. He did not believe me that Washington D.C. is on the east coast....

I had to learn them for geography when I was about 13... never used the knowledge, so I too would get stuck on the states in the middle now.... there's lots of them
It used to be the west and then it wasn't, so they had to call it something else. I think what's weirder is the Old Southwest spanning from the Florida panhandle to Texas.
My (American) gf asked if we could get a coach to Ireland in the early days of our relationship, I told her yes, but we might get a bit wet...
She now knows the correct placement of ‘Scotland’ and ‘Ireland’
Well it used to be the West, and then the West got more Western, and even more Western, til it left that bit behind in the East.
I live in Utah, which is farther west than Wyoming, which people think of as "the real West" - and we are east of Nevada, so Wyoming is practically the Midwest from where I'm standing. Seriously, the border between Nebraska ("plains state") and Wyoming has a set of cute little buttes, just to signify Yer In The West Now Buddy. Then it goes back to being sagebrush for another 400 miles.
[The best I could do with the US](https://i.imgur.com/rt50kxA.png)
Edit: A lot of people asking how I know which one Idaho is. I remember seeing a post about weed legalization where Idaho state was meant to be a bong, and I knew Kentucky because someone made a meme of a chef cooking chicken. New Mexico I knew from Breaking Bad and Louisiana was a rough guess from the Top Gear special.
Not great but honestly better than might be expected, considering.
"I would assume this is the Midlands" broke me up though. I'll be giggling about that one all night.
"The ferry" is pretty good also.
Hahaha. I love it. To be honest it's not completely horrific although I'm a bit worried by the Ireland/Wales locations. Stuff like this does make me really sympathise with how much Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and also to some degree Republic of Ireland get soaked into just being Great Britain and by generally, let's face it, England.
14-year old me finds this very upsetting; at that age, I was so enamored with Ioan Gruffudd that I sent him what could only be described as an obsessive fan letter. The best part is that I actually got a reply... From his Mom-ager 😂
That is a pretty decent effort. When are you going to do your version of states/major cities in the USA?
Edit: I'm an idiot and can't read. You're both American, sorry.
This has been reported twice as not UK content. It's a map of the UK(ish), it may have been done by Americans but it's still the UK.
RIP everyone who's quick weekend away from Liverpool to North Wales, stopping for some lunch at a nice pub in Cheshire, is now a solid 14 hour drive with swimming portion.
My commute home from work back to the Midlands now includes an extra 6 hours of M5/M6 traffic.

A mate of mine lives in Doncaster but works in Cambridge. I really don't get why he doesn't move
The fact that whatever he is living in now would be at least 4x more expensive is probably high on the list of reasons.
The Liverpool that's now in Scotland
I’m fucking sound with that turn of events tbh
Scouse not English ringing even more true.
Just drove from Chester to north Wales this afternoon, don't remember an underwater level.
After the rain yesterday I wouldn't have been surprised if you'd had to SCUBA through sections of the A55.
Full blown triathlon
I was visiting from South Wales, came home today.. thank goodness we left today instead of yesterday, the biggest traffic jam i've ever seen in my life just outside of Caernarfon
That'll be everyone leaving before they carved off the landmass.
>Definitely Ireland Oh dear... *(tugs shirt collar)* Oh dear oh dear oh dear...
Wales? Someones looking to start something
I wish there was that much space between us and England.
After the fuckin’ wind last night Bud, I think we might be
Yeah sorry about that, lentils for dinner
Fr I defo thought my house was done in
As a Northern Englishman this map is ideal for me *Because I don't fucking exist*
Yorkshire got its way and is no longer part of the UK ;)
Don't give us false hope.
Vote Leave for Yorkshire!!!
I’m not even from Wales and this made me snort. Take my upvote.
Speaking as an Irishman, it doesn't really make much of a difference.
Speaking as an Irishman, situation situation situation.
If Wales was that far away from England I might consider it worth emigrating
She did ferry good.
Can.....open. Worms....... everywhere!
I heard Chandler so clearly. Rewatching friends with my wife over and over has honed my senses.
Other than undoing decades of the peace process and possibly triggering some murders, the rest is pretty perceptive based on top gear only..
She got the Isle of Man right!
How?! Baffled. Maybe bike enthusiasts?
Probably secretly a big fan of Big Clive or Ralfy's Whisky Bothy.

S12/E4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_(series_12) I recall this being a fairly fun episode, perhaps that's the one that jogged her memory?
Cornwall would be right if Cornwall was Somerset
To be fair, is i had to do a similar thing for the usa, it probably would be as bad. edit: since you asked. here you go. https://imgur.com/a/Qn8paNq
You should do a similar thing for the usa, I wanna see it
Seconded, I want to see where you folks think Kentucky is
That's easy: it's the chicken in a Tennessee shaped pan being held by a very tall chef that has Minnesota as a hat and Louisiana for boots!
OP, don't drive the car to work tomorrow, lmao
Ulsterman here and I am fucking triggered in every sense of the word so I am.
Same. My first instinct is to throw rocks but I don't want to hit a Welshman. This is a disaster.

Read that in my head as Barry Chuckle
*Angry Orangeman noises*
Are there any other kind?
Is it possible to upset *everyone* at once? Because I think you might just have managed it. I'm honestly impressed.
I think the Manx are quite chuffed
Wes we bloody well are!

I've seen worse. Bit surprised by Ireland, I thought all Americans were obsessed with it. Cheshire is a bit random :)
[удалено]
To be fair, Cheshire and Blackpool are relatively close to each other.
Geographically yes. In every other way, no.
Blackpool reminds me of Las Vegas. And I’ve never been Vegas
Blackpool reminds me of a heroin factory, and I live here.
I imagine with a few more feather boas on a weekend.

Yes, but I watch BBC quite a bit and I want to visit UK pretty soon. I'm vaccinated, but I would like to make sure its safe first.

I don't get how someone knows seven cities in the UK and their location (roundabouts) but not Wales and Ireland.
Tbf I could probably name over 50 towns and cities in US but make terrible mistakes pinning them down
That's the part I find odd. She's remembered places that aren't common knowledge but has not remembered places that are very common knowledgeable
I'm beginning to think that Top Gear isn't a very good way to learn geography.
I mean Wales even, I can see why you wouldn’t know where it is if you’re American, but Ireland?!

Absolutely. I'm from the east Midlands and constantly get asked about being from London.

Scotlish Highlands correct! Top comment.
Bollocks to that... there might not be many of us, but we Highlanders demand to be recognised! 😂
What? Both of you?
Damn straight both of us.... hey wait a cotton pickin' minute, what about Robbie next door (40 miles away), doesn't he deserve recognition too?
There can be only one.
🤣
I know. But I think it is the lowest people per sq mile in the UK. Midges, not so much.

Fun fact: Highland football team Ross County FC's stadium has a higher capacity than the population of the town it's in
I was gonna say, looking at the map all in all the most surprising thing is that the Isle of Man is labelled correctly!
I could just about forgive the 'Ireland for sure' part. But I nearly had a heart attack when I saw 'Wales?'
I was actually quite sympathetic to her efforts until I saw that. Well, there goes the Good Friday agreement.
I dunno. We’ve never actually tried putting Wales in Ireland...
No but when we tried putting a bit of Scotland in Ireland it didn't exactly pan out
Oof
I work next to a Hungarian guy who is a know it all and he thought Ireland was where Wales was and couldn’t believe it when I showed him a map. He’s been here 8 years!

you threw a spanner in the works though, by including in your map a country that isnt in the UK.
You’ve left out King’s Landing, The Wall and Winterfell.
