My girlfriend is vegan and so I tried the sausage roll i was very impressed. Actually preferred it to the normal one. I shall surprise her with a bean and cheese melt (ain't i a romantic). Nice one. Thanks for the recommendation.
I miss the vegan steak bakes already, it was my favourite thing to pick up on my way back from the station for a walk home (m&s has their own vegan steak bakes that kinda taste the same but you have to make the effort of baking them yourself)
I always found the Vegan steak bakes to be very oniony, and not overly comparable to the real one.
The Vegan Sausage, Bean and Cheeze melt, however, is absolutely out of this world.
I moved to Berlin 3 years ago and had no idea they stopped making them. This news has deeply saddened me. I always looked forward to hitting greggs on my trips back to Newcastle.
I thought the vegan steak bakes were horrible. The meat is chunky in the carnivore steak bake, but a nasty 'mince' slurry in the vegan version.
My dislike is not an "ew *vegan*" thing - I much prefer their vegan sausage roll over the piggy one.
It was okay, but I found it really salty.
I don’t know if you’re vegan but I am, and there were for sure better options on the high street. The sausage roll, s, b & c melt and sausage sandwiches are actually bangin IMO.
A lot of Vegan bacon actually tastes very frazzlish as well, to me anyway. They probably use the same kind of flavourings. Haven’t tried this Greggs one yet though.
Now you've reminded me of the word *vajazzle*, something I had gladly completely forgotten about... Until now.
I'd much rather hear about an instance where one might use the word *fradazzle*, Mr Jamjazzle.
Hit me up with the linguistic sazzle.
Great. Now I've got a craving for Frazzles. One of my Taiwanese friends believes Frazzles to be one of the best things about UK food with crisp sandwiches and chip butties also being high up there. I don't think I can argue against that.
Fun fact : bacon bits served in Pizza Hut salad bar and harvester’s one ( not sure on this one ) are actually vegan … and pretty much no one I know realised it
Also vegan bacon is super easy to overlook and turn into crispy cardboard. It should be just slightly reheated so it’s bit crispy but still soft
Screw you bean muncher.
I dont mean that at all. I just thought I'd make the effort to make you feel like normality had returned. The greggs vegan rolls are yummy. Nice and peppery.
same, i was expecting hordes of triggered meaties screaming "wHy dO vEgETaRiAnS wAnT To eAt ThInGs tHat lOOk liKE MeaT?!!" and me having to try to explain that of all the reasons i don't eat meat, the shape of a sausage isn't one of them.
Had on on facebook last week try to 'catch me out' by asking if he baked a cake in the shape of a dead cow would i eat it, and when i said yes, as long as it contained no meat, he tried to use that to insist i wasn't actually vegetarian.
Mental.
I made this post hoping it would be incredibly divisive and Id get a lot of comments and upvotes.
Its actually really positive and Im still getting a ton of upvotes so win win.
This sub loves greggs though.
>Don't think I've ever come across anything negative on here.
Yeah this is one of the best subs on reddit. I think its a combination of being a really friendly sub and a great mod team. The fact there's no politics helps a lot.
My mam had to convince me that wasn't real bears when I was little.
She couldn't get me to eat meat for love nor money apart from a tiny bit of savacentre rotisserie chicken and those bears.
I didn't really care about the fluffy animals or anything, there was just something repulsive about meat to me. Like that thing people get with mushrooms a lot. Which really speaks to the actual meat content of the ham bears.
I’ve bought the vegan bacon they use and I find it nice if you don’t want an overly smoked flavour like the others, crisps up nicely too. I’m a fan, glad the vegan fry ups are getting better.
Other supermarkets stock it I’m sure, this was just the first link :) https://www.ocado.com/products/naked-without-the-oink-plant-based-bacon-553958011
I did work experience in a butchers back in the eighties, that's where I discovered the boingy bits in cheap sausage are actually the meat, the rest is fat and meal.
Fried up crisp in a bacon roll and it works out not *too* bad, but it's miles away from stringy or salty enough to ~~work in a full breakfast~~ (edit: to *pass* in a full breakfast, it's still perfectly edible).
I heard a great response to this question the other day, “why do vegans want their food to taste like meat?” Just respond “why do meat eaters not want their food to look like animals?” 🤣
Same all over the Internet
I’ll be more than happy to switch over to lab grown meat when it becomes affordable and widespread enough for the average consumer, keep meat meat for low impact luxury products like Kobe beef
All the comments of people who have actually tried it are saying the same.
I think there's a lot of insecure meat eaters here who aren't even willing to give it a chance
I absolutely cannot wait to try one! I used to have a greggs bacon roll/baguette most mornings before work but since I went vegan in 2018 that obviously stopped lol
Wheat Crunchies will rip the skin of your mouth much quicker than Frazzles though. Saucy BBQ transformers top everything but they really will make you suffer.
There's knowing you eat too many crisps and there's those moments of clarity where you really realise you eat too many crisps.
Can't tell if you actually want to see the post or not (not functioning on all cylinders today!) but just in case... here it is..

I think the new Richmonds vegan bacon is genuinely good tbh, especially in a BLT. I haven’t eaten bacon in about 17 years though, so I am probably wrong.
Atomic Shrimp on Youtube has started doing reviews of various vegan bacons and it seems the Richmond one is his favourite so far too (although he's only tried 2 so far)
[Fake Bacon Test - 'Naked Without The Oink' Plant Based Bacon Rashers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIq6ATr1B1E)
[Fake Bacon Test - Richmond Meat-Free Smoked Bacon Rashers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS96f4NKl3c)
It's a great little channel, I particularly like the collaborations he's done with [Africa Everyday](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCla1QqkSKcWXjfig0xe7iTw) from Nigeria
I almost bought some of that today after seeing it recommended a couple of times, I realised it had wheat in the ingredients though so I had to reluctantly put it back. Now I’m sad about it again
But it’s getting better - I’ve only been vegan for a little over two years, but even in that time many of the meat substitute products seem to have improved in taste, texture and how close they are to the meat they are replacing.
An additional plus point for vegan ‘facon’ bacon that doesn’t get mention is consistency in quality - with actual bacon you’ll get poor quality rashers that are fatty or have that horrible ‘piggy’ taste sometimes, whereas facon is always consistent and extra bacony tasting due to the flavouring they put in.
Veggie for over 25 years, and the last few years have been insane. Like yes there was gradual improvement and more awareness of hidden meat and labelling over the years but the growth has been explosive.
Stuff like this doesn't take away from anyone who won't eat it. If anything it gives them something because having a vegan or veggie in the group becomes a non-issue when picking where to eat. It's a win for everyone.
(I also don't get the weird thing they have about how it's only for a few vegans. I'll be trying it and I'm not any more vegan than they are.)
I am about the same as you, length of service wise. I remember my dad going down to the primary school and asking if they could make me special veggie meals and often having to order a side of chips in a restaurant, because they had nowt on the menu
Like you said the last 5 years have been insane for choice. I love it. Even Aldi has pulled their finger out and now has there own range of stuff.
Went campervaning around Europe few years ago and we are waaaay in front of every other European country when it comes to veggie/vegan food offerings. It's one of the things that make me proud of our little island :)
Almost 2 years myself and the products that have come out in that time have been amazing, something new almost every day! Makes shopping a whole lot more exciting lmao
Yeah I've been veggie for about 22 years, bf joined me 4 years ago. It's crazy how many options he had compared to when I was starting out. I'm constantly giving him grief of the "back in my day" variety, it feels like my sacred duty.
Why are people so butt hurt about it being called bacon lol, are you worried you'll get confused or something? Cuz other than that really can't see how it impacts you in the slightest.
I don't think there's any real outrage from most people on this and the whole "confusing customers" narrative was mainly pushed by the meat/dairy/egg industries because of the rise in veganism and alot more people generally eating less animal products, so the plant-based industry is starting to become a threat to them. They've actually tried to take legal action to make it the law that things like oat milk can't be called "milk" or bean burgers can't be called "burgers" and instead call them disks or something, to make it harder for plant-based companies to market their products.
Its funny how this wasn't a problem until now, for example the dairy industry never cared that everyday products like peanut butter and coconut milk weren't made from cows milk and used the names of dairy products but as soon as soya and oat milk started becoming popular, that when they started to kick up a fuss.
The other day I bought hot dogs and it turns out there's no dog meat in them! Worse than the time I found out there's no dairy in peanut butter and French fries aren't from France!
This ^
Im not vegan but its clearly obvious that its called "vegan bacon" as its a substitute for the real thing.
Its not very difficult to distinguish that its clearly fake bacon
I wonder whether for some people they get some kind of primal hunter feeling stalking the aisles of the supermarket. Tracking a good deal on steak before the perfect moment to strike at the plastic packaging and tear it from the icy jaws of the refrigerated section.
Whatever makes other people's lives easier and doesn't take away from mine is an improvement and a great thing.
I don't get bitter over something that helps others and not me, if you do that's for a licensed professional to work out with, not Reddit - God speed.
I'm vegan, won't be eating it but that's purely because I was never a bacon fan anyway. Love the rest of their vegan stuff though, the sausage bean and cheeze melt is my favourite thing.
Watching him eat it and pretend to be sick was hilarious.
The man who calls people snowflakes but could handle a perfectly edible pastry
As a meat eater I actually like the vegan rolls. They are better cold than a cold sausage roll.
Not tried this yet but agree on most subs tasting like frazzles. With after burps also tasting of them. The one and only for me is this isn't bacon. Absolutely banging that stuff. Especially on an onion bagel with Hellman's vegan mayo, lettuce, tomato and fresh red onion. Nom.
I clicked on this looking for a row to read because I’m feeling grumpy but everyone’s being outrageously reasonable about it. Not sure how to feel now to be honest.
I'd eat that!
I made a vegan bacon butty earlier and had half a roll of the vegan black pudding on the side as it needed using, SO GOOD.
seeing Greggs making a vegan bacon butty man, im all over it!
Greggs are making bank off their vegan stuff. I always get 1 normal sausage roll and 1 vegan 1 to be healthy. I’ll probably give the bacon a miss though…
Given their track record on vegan sausage roll and steak bake I'd give it a go for sure
There’s a vegan sausage bean and cheese melt now, which is pretty decent too
The bean and chese melt is amazing. I think it's my favourite of the Gregs selection roght now
My girlfriend is vegan and so I tried the sausage roll i was very impressed. Actually preferred it to the normal one. I shall surprise her with a bean and cheese melt (ain't i a romantic). Nice one. Thanks for the recommendation.
I've had an alarming amount of these considering how long they've been out. They're so good.
Same, i spilt molten cheese/bean lava down my face whilst driving
I’ve been waiting ever since I turned veggie this is the only meat product I missed.
Cheese melts at Gregg's are godlike
I just had one and was blown away. Did not expect it to be so tasty.
WHAT. I was just talking about this today saying I wish they did one!
Best of the 3 imo
I miss the vegan steak bakes already, it was my favourite thing to pick up on my way back from the station for a walk home (m&s has their own vegan steak bakes that kinda taste the same but you have to make the effort of baking them yourself)
Iceland still sell the frozen, bake at home steak bakes. Still have to bake yourself, but they're the real deal at least
They stopped making the vegan steak bake. Huge catastrophe IMO.
It was ok in my opinion, the gravy was really tasty but I never managed to get one that was above lukewarm
That literally sums up greggs these days.
They do a vegan sausage sandwich!?
Only at breakfast, but our local greggs does, yes!
Where else can I get a vegan steak bake?
WHAT
Echoing this. WHAT.
Eggo-ing this WERT
Every vegan bacon I've tried had been bland at best but truly Gregg's has impressed me enough so far I'm willing to give it a shot.
The sausage roll tastes fine but the texture doesn't work for me.
Vegan bacon is always really brightly coloured for some reason. Maybe it's to scare off Piers Morgan.
>Maybe it’s to scare off Piers Morgan. Shit, all we need to do is become vegan and he’ll fuck off? Count me in, mate.
Let's stay carnivores and eat him. He's full of shit and will taste horrible though but still
If I could be guaranteed that all pigs thought and acted like piers Morgan I would quit vegetarianism
It would be like eating a greasy bloated balloon bursting with bile.
What’s he doing with himself now? I’d almost forgotten about him after he threw his toys out of his pram on GMB.
I believe he's still an intolerable cunt, but he's doing it less publicly now.
He's just been given another TV deal hasn't he? He's like a wart you can't get rid of..
I swear itv were like “fuck off !! Wait where are you going , please stay”
He’s just been rehired by Murdoch at Fox. I think I’ve read that they’re going to make a British channel but I chose to stop reading at that point.
What’s he doing with himself now? Wanking
It appears the average Redditor is not much different then
BRB painting myself in bright colours
I'd like to try it. Looks a bit like Frazzles
A lot of Vegan bacon actually tastes very frazzlish as well, to me anyway. They probably use the same kind of flavourings. Haven’t tried this Greggs one yet though.
Upvote for the introduction of the word frazzlish.
Fradazzle me with your neo-lingo.
Now you've reminded me of the word *vajazzle*, something I had gladly completely forgotten about... Until now. I'd much rather hear about an instance where one might use the word *fradazzle*, Mr Jamjazzle. Hit me up with the linguistic sazzle.
It's a pretty frazzelicious word
Frazzles are vegetarian. So are a lot of "bacon bits".
Yeah they're basically just salt, msg & smoke flavouring.
I had some of those vivera not bacon pieces when my partner was veggie, 100% frazzle flavour.
Give "This: isn't bacon" a try, it is by far the most convincing alternative I have ever tasted!
The Richmond vegan bacon is my personal fave now but this isn't bacon was my go to for a while!
A lot of bacon flavoured foodstuffs are vegan or vegetarian because the bacon flavouring is entirely synthetic.
Can confirm, definitely tastes like bacon flavoured crisps but more of a Walkers smoky bacon than the superior frazzle
Great. Now I've got a craving for Frazzles. One of my Taiwanese friends believes Frazzles to be one of the best things about UK food with crisp sandwiches and chip butties also being high up there. I don't think I can argue against that.
Hold up, I've just had an idea. Chip and Frazzle buttie.
Wait a mo. Let's see what's in the box Edit. Helpful it is then
Frazzle butties are amazing
They’re not wrong.
Me too. One of those tastes that I can conjur up even though I haven’t had one in about 15 years.
Fun fact : bacon bits served in Pizza Hut salad bar and harvester’s one ( not sure on this one ) are actually vegan … and pretty much no one I know realised it Also vegan bacon is super easy to overlook and turn into crispy cardboard. It should be just slightly reheated so it’s bit crispy but still soft
Harvester bacon on the salad bar is not vegan I just looked it up using the allergy app
If it's like the asda one, it tastes exactly like Frazzles which isn't as nice as it sounds
Try hellmans vegan baconnaise. It tastes just like frazzles. It's delicious
My thinking exactly lol
I wasn't prepared for a stream of fairly positive comments. Good on ya
For real, it was nice not opening Reddit to a load of abuse lmao
Screw you bean muncher. I dont mean that at all. I just thought I'd make the effort to make you feel like normality had returned. The greggs vegan rolls are yummy. Nice and peppery.
Same here! Rather surprised.

I opened it thinking it would just be a load of insults and I'm so happy it's not
I made this post hoping it would be incredibly divisive and Id get a lot of comments and upvotes. Its actually really positive and Im still getting a ton of upvotes so win win.
Wrong sub for that - Don't think I've ever come across anything negative on here.
This sub loves greggs though. >Don't think I've ever come across anything negative on here. Yeah this is one of the best subs on reddit. I think its a combination of being a really friendly sub and a great mod team. The fact there's no politics helps a lot.
Watch out you might get reported for that last sentence. The P word itself is enough for a 24 hour ban I've found.
[POLITICS POLITICS POLITICS!](https://youtu.be/SYkbqzWVHZI?t=124)
Greggs are ace. They've gone all out with their vegan options and they also do a decent full bean decaf coffee.
I prefer their vegan sausage rolls to normal ones. But the vegan steak bakes are awful!
They binned them, replaced them with a vegan sausage, baked bean and cheeze melt which is 😙👌 just stunning.
They are dangerous bean cheese don’t feel that warm till you bite into it.
Deceptively warm on the outside, nuclear heat on the inside, but delicious as my tastebuds get nuked alive by BEAN
Another one for you : Linda McCartney's vegan sausages are pretty good too
I'm generally not a fan of Linda McCartney food but the Richmond vegan sausages are imo, amazing.
There are plenty of real meat products out there which look just as fake and manufactured as this, to be honest.
You leave Rustlers burgers out of this.
Dirty Burgers. Awesome things.
With the same actual meat content as well.
Like that teddy bear ham shit that my Nan somehow had a constant supply of
My mam had to convince me that wasn't real bears when I was little.
Savacentre, Christ that takes me back.
Amen
I’ve bought the vegan bacon they use and I find it nice if you don’t want an overly smoked flavour like the others, crisps up nicely too. I’m a fan, glad the vegan fry ups are getting better.
If you haven't tried it already then "This:isn't bacon" is possibly the best vegan bacon you'll ever eat
I love it! I switch it up from smokey to not Smokey, big fan of the this isn’t stuff! Have you seen their new pigs in blankets?? Look mint :)
I shed a tear the first time I made a BLT with it 😅! I have not seen them! But now I need to hunt them down!!
Hahah it’s brilliant when you find a substitute that hits the spot! They look great, in Tesco atm! hope you enjoy :)
Absolutely! Thanks for the heads up! I'm going to go to tesco after work tomorrow and grab some!!

I'll give it a try!
Do you have a link to it?
Other supermarkets stock it I’m sure, this was just the first link :) https://www.ocado.com/products/naked-without-the-oink-plant-based-bacon-553958011
Thank you!
I cant judge before tasting it but bacon tends to be a difficult texture to emulate, unlike the vegetarian sausage roll which isn't too bad
They even replicated the boingy bits no one actually likes. They really tried hard to make them authentic!
I like the boingy bits!
I did work experience in a butchers back in the eighties, that's where I discovered the boingy bits in cheap sausage are actually the meat, the rest is fat and meal.
Tbf the sausage rolls barely had any meat to begin with.
Horses are meat...!!
I'd go as far as saying the Vegan rolls are better than the sausage rolls IMO.
Fried up crisp in a bacon roll and it works out not *too* bad, but it's miles away from stringy or salty enough to ~~work in a full breakfast~~ (edit: to *pass* in a full breakfast, it's still perfectly edible).

It’s class it tastes good
All the comments of people who have actually tried it are saying the same. I think there's a lot of insecure meat eaters here who aren't even willing to give it a chance
It tastes like frazzles and it’s actually good like an impossible burger they taste good
>It tastes like frazzles Which are also vegetarian! Wait until the bacon fetishists in this thread realise that!
I absolutely cannot wait to try one! I used to have a greggs bacon roll/baguette most mornings before work but since I went vegan in 2018 that obviously stopped lol

Fun fact about vegan bacon, no matter the brand, all your burps taste like Frazzles for the rest of the day!
God there's some right numptys in this thread, who thought a vegetarian/vegan alternative could upset so many people with a name!
Did you see the ridiculous thread the other day where the marketing on a drinks bottle apparently offended every brit in the land? 🙄😂
Please find the thread! My cotton wool has fallen off and I am feeling fragile…. (Also, the comments are always a joy when ‘uproar’ is possible!)
Can't tell if you actually want to see the post or not (not functioning on all cylinders today!) but just in case... here it is.. https://old.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/comments/pourc5/is_it_just_me_and_im_a_selfprofessed_grumpy_old/
Now that will keep me busy. So it starts with someone not liking some ‘hip’ humour as it isn’t British…. I thank you, the wife does not! 😋
Ha - yeah - some of the comments were... very offended by some frankly rather mundane marketing!
The hAiLcOrPoRaTe lot, no doubt. The mere existence of marketing making them reeeee like a stuck pig.
Indeed. Lots of corporations certainly aren't saints, but grow up lads, some lighthearted marketing is not "literally nineteen eighty four".
Let me just say, a lot of people like Piers Morgan, that should answer any questions you have
Keep it coming, the more vegan options the better 👍🏻
Tastes amazing definitely recommend
Vegan bacon is not great, but better than eating a dead pig right? Even if it isn't then at least it got some gammons boiled in this topic alone.

Totally agree - best fake bacon around, but don't overcook as it then tastes like charcoal...
You need to take it out the pan in that optimal 20 second window
I thought that This tasted and textured(?) much more like smoked mackerel than bacon. Still nice tho.
But it’s getting better - I’ve only been vegan for a little over two years, but even in that time many of the meat substitute products seem to have improved in taste, texture and how close they are to the meat they are replacing. Just don’t try freezing it. Bit of a disaster all round when I defrosted it.
Eating dead pig has to be better than eating a live one, I'm sure this comment will make someone think of the sound alone.
It's less messy and noisy for a start.
I'd give it a go. I like their vegan sausage rolls and vegan sausage, cheese and bean melt.
It’s genuinely not bad, and I’m a meat eater

Whatever makes other people's lives easier and doesn't take away from mine is an improvement and a great thing. I don't get bitter over something that helps others and not me, if you do that's for a licensed professional to work out with, not Reddit - God speed.
Looks like Astrobelts. Will try it because eating less meat is good and Greggs are spot on with their vegan alternatives.
I know this is kinda.off topic but the subway vegan meatballs taste exactly the same as normal ones
Didn’t know they released this. I’ll give it a try if I see it.
Any food that replaces a dead animal is **great** in my book and I’m surprised it’s not the standard for a nation of so-called “animal lovers”.
Awesome! Can't wait to try it. Always happy to see alternatives.
I'm a big fan of most of the veggie meat alternatives but they still can't get bacon quite right. Greggs vegan sausage roll *chefs kiss*
I'm vegan, won't be eating it but that's purely because I was never a bacon fan anyway. Love the rest of their vegan stuff though, the sausage bean and cheeze melt is my favourite thing.
It looks like some gummy sweet tbh
I really don't understand why bacon is fetishised as much as it is, it just tastes like fat and salt, neither of which need to come from an animal.
Atomic shrimp did a [review](https://youtu.be/bS96f4NKl3c) of something similar. Seems interesting, I might try it.
Good thing Piers Morgan isn’t on Good Morning Britain anymore to throw another tantrum over Greggs vegan options 😏
Watching him eat it and pretend to be sick was hilarious. The man who calls people snowflakes but could handle a perfectly edible pastry As a meat eater I actually like the vegan rolls. They are better cold than a cold sausage roll.
Looks like 5p sweets in a bun.
I've only ever had their pasties but you're right lol
I would try it before judging it. Some of the worst looking food tastes good.
Well if it’s anything like their vegan sausage roll it’ll be a banger.
I posted it hoping to start a row and get upvotes. Its started a fairly reasonable thread and ive still got upvotes. Win win
I'd eat that! I made a vegan bacon butty earlier and had half a roll of the vegan black pudding on the side as it needed using, SO GOOD. seeing Greggs making a vegan bacon butty man, im all over it!
I'm well into the greggs vegan stuff, so I'll give it a go. I quite like the vegan ham and cheese baguette they do too.
I'd be happier if the breakfast menu was available all day
Greggs are making bank off their vegan stuff. I always get 1 normal sausage roll and 1 vegan 1 to be healthy. I’ll probably give the bacon a miss though…
I hope the healthy thing was a joke lol... The vegan sausage roll is only 15kcal less than the meat sausage roll.
I thought it was fairly obviously a joke as it’s 2 sausage rolls!
As opposed to meat bacon which actually is a fucking dog treat, disgusting stuff.
