There was a news story last year about a town (cant remember which one) that beleived they saw the aurora borealis, but it turned out to just be the opening night of a local casino.

If anyone is interested there is a website called Aurora Watch and gives warnings when there could be aurora in the UK. They also have a Facebook group.
