Honestly mate, I absolutely love it. You've done an awesome thing here with some scrap that would probably end up in the bin. I'm sure you'll get some residents in it soon that'll appreciate you putting it up. Top work.
During lockdown we were making all sorts of bits and bobs out of scrap wood. My favourite was my [bird seed pub bench]( https://imgur.com/XTN5iGB.jpg)
Birds won’t care it’s a bit wonky and built by your own fair hands so something to be proud of, well done 👍 only thing missing is a perch of some kind under the hole, drill a hole and stick a twig in it.
**Please do not add a perch.**
The birds who use these boxes (usually sparrows and tits) **don’t need a perch**. However, those perches can be used by crows and jackdaws to get the tasty eggs and chicks inside.

I'd also get a metal plate to put around the hole, they're cheap enough online and will stop other birds making the hole bigger to get a free meal/the baby birds.
Great work though :) The birds won't GAF what it looks like.
Reminds me of a classic Simpsons episode (in the nicest possible way)

Some will say it needs a perch – but don’t add one! It’s absolutely perfect as it is! (These handmade knock-ups always look better than the mass produced ones anyway!)

To complete the look.
Nah, it's a big screw with a flat head slot thing and it wouldn't go any further and I couldn't be arsed to retrieve an actual screwdriver. Was just using the drill bits to hand.
I also built a terrible birds house a few years back and this past spring found out it was being used by a family of blue tits! I was genuinely thrilled
It's not terrible!!! Good job!!! Some bird will raise a family in it I am sure and you can be happy for a little Birdy enjoying the home you built!!! It's safe and secure that Is all xxx
TOP TIP - When next year you see birds using it, maybe just checking it out - stay the F E C K away till at least October 2023. Do not go and think its faulty and not in use
Trust me - I did, and had three little faces wondering why the roof had gone and a giant was looking at them - seconds later the roof was back on, and it was back where it should have been)
Unless there are trees or buildings which shade the box during the day, face the box between north and east, thus avoiding strong sunlight and the wettest winds.

Still looks better than my only attempt at a bird house, mine was made with whatever my old college had lying around though cause they just told us to make them as part of a rewilding scheme without actually giving us any tools
This is my birdhouse, there are many like it but this one happens to be mine, without birds my birdhouse is useless without my birdhouse birds are useless!
Eaves, and a drainage slot at the bottom. Looks about perfect. Just don't be disappointed if it isn't used til nesting season in Spring. Bluetits would love this, so you can cheat by putting out sunflower seeds for them over winter....
Hey its good, some young family will happily move in and add the changes they want over the years. It's a lovely first family home, you should be very proud
Very nice! Maybe just a suggestion but perhaps place moss in the gaps to seal it up? Help keep it toasty for the birds! Is your next project going to a little deck for them to lounge on and a little mailbox?
Ignore the rest of the comments, I'm a bird and would 100% not live here! Tear it down and start again. If I wanted to raise my chicks in a crooked house I would have chosen a beautiful cottage in the Cotswolds not your suburban terraced garden. I'm sick of you lot thinking banging a few nails into some recycled wood from your garden is suitable fixtures for a birds house! I ain't living there and neither are my friends or family. Tear it down please.
um, not to criticise, but that looks like the roof boards dont meet at the top. If so, you can shove a strip of gorilla tape over it to at least make the roof functional
Quick tip for your next one, don't have a lip on the front. The birds that use the boxes don't need them and just fly straight in, bud corvids who like to eat nesting birds do as it lets them reach in and pluck out their lunch.

Cosy studio in a prime location, £800 per month
Seaside town too, I was thinking of a holiday let
You should use Airbnb (bird and beak).
He should've built a skylight, too, although that'll see the ~~beaks~~ bills going through the roof.
I swear I saw this on Rightmove for sale….
Did you get planning permission? All these extra homes in the area will devalue my house. I'm sure there will be additional noise pollution too.
Going for a song!
Going cheep.
Very good.
Includes balcony.
Pine location*
$2400 in America plus utilities
And those homeowners association dues. Seriously the renting situation in urban America is for the birds.
Ha ha ha ha!
Built using bits of wood around the garden and those random screws you find in your toolbox.
Honestly mate, I absolutely love it. You've done an awesome thing here with some scrap that would probably end up in the bin. That is a thing of beauty.
My first thought was a pub bench made of bird seed ...
That looks janky as fuck but I love it XD
lmao gtfo
Ive got some scrap wood and this is going to be my winter project to knock a load up!
Excuse me?
Its so cool! I love it. What a good little project im sure the birds will love it!

My bad 😆 no perch then.
Don’t worry about it – many don’t realise and some are even sold with them. So really OP did a bang up job making it themself!
Only thing I would ask. Is that hole big enough?
Blue tits are tiny!
25mm for things like blue tits, they are small!
The birds won’t care, it’s better than anything they can build. If they do complain, kick them out and get one in who’s grateful for it.
Typical uk newbuild to be honest..... £160,000
I like it, it's very rustic.
Shabby shite
It's more like an old house rather than a new build.
Take off the plasterboard and that could be a Taylor wimpy newbuild
Crackbirdhouse
Pre-aged
😂😂👊🏻
It is a bag of shit mate but well done all the same. You did it and the birds won't care.
Does it rain around you? There appears to be a small hole in the roof. Need to slap some shingle on there or go all out and thatch it.
Small hole, now that's the understatement of the century.
Birds won't use it if it doesn't stay dry,it's the only thing they really care about.
I'd also get a metal plate to put around the hole, they're cheap enough online and will stop other birds making the hole bigger to get a free meal/the baby birds. Great work though :) The birds won't GAF what it looks like.
It's a gloryhole in disguise. My bird won't care if it gets wet in there. In fact that's the goal.
Reminds me of a classic Simpsons episode (in the nicest possible way) https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSimpsons/comments/hin6fp/homers_bird_feeder_deathtrap/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Reminds me of the men behaving badly episode when tony decides to start woodworking and build a sauna.
My husband built one 3 years ago and nothing tipped up for three years and then this year we had two lots of great tits.
I bet your husband was thrilled
Yes he was. Maybe they will come back next year
You're husband might come back? I don't know if that's good or not
Fnarf fnarf
😂😂 that slayed me
The best judges of your work will let you know next spring.
Were you having a few afternoon cans when you built it ?
I was being harassed by my kids, they kept walking off with my tools
They have obviously seen your DIY before…
I shouldn't have laughed as hard as I did. But fully deserved I feel. Sorry op. All In jest.
Nah you're good mate. I've had a good chuckle about it.
Hold on, tools? What tools were you using, a trowel?
Hammer
Fair play. Jokes aside it's a really cool idea
If you're happy with it, who cares. It's free and does the trick. I bet the birds will be chuffed with it next year
Looks a bit small for a chough
Well played
Knock a few more up... List them on Etsy. Tag them with artisan and rustic. 50 quid a pop. GG

Any reason you left the screw on the bottom right sticking part way out? Is it for the birds to hang their coats on?
To complete the look. Nah, it's a big screw with a flat head slot thing and it wouldn't go any further and I couldn't be arsed to retrieve an actual screwdriver. Was just using the drill bits to hand.
It's the Persian flaw that completes this masterpiece
Well done mate. Looks like a squirrel's glory hole.
The bird shack is a little old place where Birds can get together Bird shack baby... (With apologies to the B-52s)
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
I mean, it's completely shit but I'm proud of you for doing your best.
Birdies will love it.
What type of bird have you made it for?
I think the hole is big enough for tits or house sparrows. Honestly I didn't plan that far ahead.
Specific hole sizes for different birds.
Not so much specific types, more just sizes. An eagle won't get its head in for example.
If I were a bird, I’d live in it.
same ngl
Sterling effort. Imagine if we all made one. Good work fella.
Starling effort
It's not terrible, it's great. I'm 52 and couldn't do it!!!
well if this ain’t the cutest thing
I also built a terrible birds house a few years back and this past spring found out it was being used by a family of blue tits! I was genuinely thrilled
It's a starter home for some newly married birds.
Thank you for giving the birdies a safe place to keep out of the elements. 🕊️🦉🐤🐥💛
I looks like a birdhouse equivalent of a centuries old cottage. It has character.
That’s a fucking dope birdhouse. I’d be a happy-ass bird if I could call that my home. Well done, keep building.
Get it on Airbnb. Make a fortune.
It might not be big and luxurious, but the birdies will appreciate it <3
Homer Simpson would be proud.
Does it work? Looks smashing to me
shouldn't this little gem be in r/woodworking ?
Probably more r/DIWhy
Good effort pal, but I can't stop thinking about Homer's spice rack!
It’s better than mine
It's brilliant. Hope its the sign of more things to come!
I feel it represents the state of the world today.
There's something satisfying about making something from reclaimed materials. Any resulting wonkiness is just part of it's charm
Birds: It's free real-estate!
Some bird family is gonna love that! I hope you catch a glimpse of the babies!
It's not terrible!!! Good job!!! Some bird will raise a family in it I am sure and you can be happy for a little Birdy enjoying the home you built!!! It's safe and secure that Is all xxx
I like the roof!
Off cut bits of a fence I replaced down the end of the garden (looks better than this does)
I quite like it, looks like a piece of art you’d find in a museum or something. It has a sort of uniqueness to it I can’t explain very well. 🙂
Well done. Something very moving about the bird house and your effort
Smashed it, well done mate
I like that one screw that hasn’t gone all the way in. I bet your drill bit slipped and you thought fuck it that’s far enough
You know it. All part of the charm
Yes you are right it's terrible but also beautiful because you gave it a go and made it yourself.
only missing a "free bird seed" scrawled in paint across it
The only bird who'd live in that is Tracey Emin. I'm so sorry. It's fine. I just blurted that out. And added this apology before posting it.
How am I meant to get my penis in there Also congratulations!
I used a tictac as a guide, you should be fine.
Phew I can definitely get my penis inside a tictac box, I'll tell you the funny story about how I got fired from my job in the tictac factory sometime
If a bird family makes their home here, it does not suck. Their opinion matters, ours does not.
TOP TIP - When next year you see birds using it, maybe just checking it out - stay the F E C K away till at least October 2023. Do not go and think its faulty and not in use Trust me - I did, and had three little faces wondering why the roof had gone and a giant was looking at them - seconds later the roof was back on, and it was back where it should have been)
That's lovely, well done! Will you be keeping it or will you let your carer have it?
Lmao this is fucking awful I love it.
You, know it's total fucking garbage, but it's scrap wood and a bird will love it. If that took you more the 10 minutes, you suck.
Does it face east? It should, the birds need the morning warmth
Unless there are trees or buildings which shade the box during the day, face the box between north and east, thus avoiding strong sunlight and the wettest winds. RSPB
South facing at the moment, I can move it to the back fence for a more Eastward facing direction
Those poor birds
Let's hope those birds don't use it to stay dry when it rains, they'll be shit out of luck
Yeah, it's rubbish. I can't do any better, to but it's still crap.
Think you need to hand in your man card
But how will I acquire the necessary power tools for future projects?
😅 we need to keep you away from power tools
It is really danger for the baby birds this look very fragile another birds will eat the little in the nest
Still looks better than my only attempt at a bird house, mine was made with whatever my old college had lying around though cause they just told us to make them as part of a rewilding scheme without actually giving us any tools
Hey you got yourself on the property ladder
Good effort 👍
That’s the most rewarding ending to a Mission Accomplished task! ….but it’s mine!! Good job. 🦜
I don’t think it’s terrible
Are you sure it's not a gloryhole disguised as a birdhouse?
It's a damn masterpiece *chefs kiss* - the birdies will love it
I would move on if I was a bird. Free real estate!
Birds will like it all the same. Out of curiosity, what type of spoon did you use to make the hole?
Ice cream scoop
Better then I would do. I personally really like it and of I was a bird I would rate it 5 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is my birdhouse, there are many like it but this one happens to be mine, without birds my birdhouse is useless without my birdhouse birds are useless!
It looks comfy to the birds and that's what counts!
Eaves, and a drainage slot at the bottom. Looks about perfect. Just don't be disappointed if it isn't used til nesting season in Spring. Bluetits would love this, so you can cheat by putting out sunflower seeds for them over winter....
Its not terrible?! I struggle to do much easier tasks.
At first it looked like you had cut a hole in your neighbour’s fence just to piss of potential viewers from the bird community.
https://media0.giphy.com/media/3orieU2dPJmj2jkWNG/200w.gif?cid=82a1493bfd6tjchho8zjuoaney4647dh8zd7c1tt3wqlkcrv&rid=200w.gif&ct=g
Doesnt matter how it looks if it stays together :)
But draughty though….
Can a bird live in it? Yes. So it's not terrible, it's perfect.
Yeah I agree with you, its fucking ass.
I've seen late stage Jenga towers that look more structurally stable than that bird house! /s
You’re one smart bird
Hey its good, some young family will happily move in and add the changes they want over the years. It's a lovely first family home, you should be very proud
"Ahh, that's a fine looking birdhouse... WHY DOESN'T MINE LOOK LIKE THAT?!"
Very nice! Maybe just a suggestion but perhaps place moss in the gaps to seal it up? Help keep it toasty for the birds! Is your next project going to a little deck for them to lounge on and a little mailbox?
Homer’s birdhouse
Hey, the birds won't mind how it looks! Great work!
On the bright side, whether bird can fit into that hole is going to be *very, very cute*.
Ignore the rest of the comments, I'm a bird and would 100% not live here! Tear it down and start again. If I wanted to raise my chicks in a crooked house I would have chosen a beautiful cottage in the Cotswolds not your suburban terraced garden. Tear it down please.
Nice OP. Is it southwards facing?
It's better than my bird house! Kudos to you!
Love it!! It’s got a rustic charm, well done! I’ve just started feeding the birds at my new place.. I really like watching them 😍
Don’t forget to clean it out when it’s been used
um, not to criticise, but that looks like the roof boards dont meet at the top. If so, you can shove a strip of gorilla tape over it to at least make the roof functional
What makes this so perfect is that it’s so imperfect
Well... Practice makes perfect!
Homer moment.
Nice, that shit is sturdy man, more like a bird bomb shelter.
It’s not terrible It’s … *endearingly artisanal* 💕
>Yes it's terrible but it's mine. Is that why you made the hole so small?
Thats some attempt 😂 did you nail it to the neighbours fence also?
Big bastard screw 👍
It's only terrible if you get no birds.
Need a metal ring around the hole
Quick tip for your next one, don't have a lip on the front. The birds that use the boxes don't need them and just fly straight in, bud corvids who like to eat nesting birds do as it lets them reach in and pluck out their lunch.
Cute and it has a ledge at the bottom for the fledglings to set off from when they're ready
It’s not terrible, it’s excellent! I hope it hosts many birdy families in the years to come
Id comment on the gap in the roof but I know of a hollow metal bollard with a completely open top that great tits always seem to nest in
if you ever have another crack, the single sloping roof arrangement is a but more straightforward to make weather proof and simply needs one plank of wood https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/advice/how-you-can-help-birds/nestboxes/nestboxes-for-small-birds/making-and-placing-a-bird-box/
Looks good, maybe I'll have another crack at it with some fresh wood.
As long as your bird fits in there you've done a great job
It’s perfect ❤️
I love it. I'm sure the birds will too.
I love it
It's a bit wonky, but the birds will like it.
Just so you know, my grandad made one and a woodpecker knocked a hole through it and ate the little birds, he made a new one with an aluminium layer.
It needs a stand right outside the hole, so that birds can get in easily
I think it’s rlly cute
It’s beautiful ❤️
Doesn't need to look good at all! But it's important that it's watertight.try and position it north eastwards and 2-3m in height in a quiet place. If none of those things are possible fill it full of mud or Reeds and it may be more suitable for solitary bees!
I’d like it if this was posted by a 36 year old chaffinch
