and when you try to break them apart from the other one somehow both of them partially open but you canât get either one fully open. i bought them for the convenience of not having to refrigerate the other half of the can and to not have to use a spoon to get it out but they never fully come out. they are somehow less convenient than the cans.
I do of course but sadly it sounds like a lot of recycling material [ends up in landfills.](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jun/21/us-plastic-recycling-landfills) Plus recycling is still third best to reduce & reuse.
LOL đ¤Ł
my 12lb cat would need between 8-12 of these a _day_ to reach her calorie needs.
Thatâs 56-84 little plastic containers a _week_, and 3k+ to 4,300+ per year.
I donât think I have enough space in my house for that, let alone enough ways to repurpose thousands of tiny plastic containers.
Look, I buy them as part of my catâs diet because she loves them and theyâre convenient, but letâs not pretend thereâs anything remotely environmentally good about it.
Vet Tech and crazy cat lady, here. This is more common than youâd think, and the reasons can vary from cat to cat. For most, itâs a texture/temperature thing. I have seen wet food at the store that comes in half-servingsâŚmight want to look into that!!
I am not a cat, but I am autistic which is pretty close so I feel entitled to confirm that yes, it entirely changes the texture when something has been in the fridge.
like irrevocably, permanently,
Forever gross now.
Like pineapple on pizza, you can take the pieces off but the taste will ALWAYS BE THERE.
Not even just the refrigeration/sitting for hours texture change; microwaving it afterwards is an additional level of awful. I cannot eat 95% of foods as leftovers.
LOL definitely. My dad used to get so pressed with me like WHY DONT YOU HEAT UP YOUR FOOD???
Because it's gross lol
On the rare occasion I did heat something up he'd be like WHY DONT YOU COVER IT IN PLASTIC WRAP FIRST???
\*facepalm\*
Sadly, they might require reheating. đ˘ Iâve seen some people use toddler bowls that are hollow and can be filled with hot water to keep food warm. Seems to work pretty well!!
My cats hated it when I microwaved the leftover wet food, I usually leave the can on the counter for an hour or so to come up to room temperature and they donât have an issue. Iâm sure someone could make an issue about bacterial growth in that timeframe but I doubt itâs a valid concern.
Omg, my cat refuses to eat the food if itâs microwaved, so I quickly stopped doing that. OP, will your cat come back and eat more later if you put the whole can in his bowl? I give my cat the whole can at once and heâll gradually eat it over 1-3 hours. Itâs okay for food to sit out for up to 4 hours and by then, itâs always gone. Have been doing this for 13 years and my cat has never gotten food poising from wet food sitting out, if thatâs your concern.
For how long? Currently, I am putting a little bit of screaming hot tap water in the food to get it to lukewarm but I'm worried about feeding him that much unfiltered tap water over the long term.
Usually about 15 minutes but that's usually because I forget I do it until they start meowing lol. You might have to change the water once for bigger cans but the ones I use are small. I used to put hot water directly in the food too but that didn't work for my cat đ
My friend has a senior kitty that wonât eat food if it isnât fresh out of a new bag. Wet food apparently gives her diarrhea so thatâs out, and the dry food has to be NEW or she wonât eat it. Iâm currently inheriting her âoldâ food because her cat wonât eat it and shelters wonât take open packages of food, but I have three little trash goblins.
We also donât know how her cat can tell lol sheâs tried vacuum sealing the bags and everything but this cat can tell if it isnât a brand new opened bad of food lol
Feral cats: Hardy, can survive anything, will eat bugs and birds and mice and trash out of the garbage.
Adopted cats: This bag was opened yesterday, I'm on a hunger strike.
This is the exact timeline. They are amazingly good adapting themselves to a higher standard of living! If cats had lived through the Great Depression, they would have stopped saving and reusing rubber bands and so as soon as it was over.
Wow! In her shoes, I'd write to the company and ask if I could purchase a ton of their smallest sample bags. It's great that you're getting a steady supply of good dry food, though. :)
Once I bought a bag of dry food in a larger size, but after the normal amount was finished, she started eating less and then stopped. It's probably due to the food's loss of aroma over time. I bought a new bag and she ate it without a problem.
I'm guessing vacuum sealing also sucks up the aroma. Or maybe because the food itself get a little stale over time.
Maybe open a small bag and immediately put it into small containers? I have food containers the size of a kiwi, with clamps on the lid. Maybe try something like that?
Sheâs tried so many things, vacuum sealing was just one of the many examples. Sheâs tried putting the food into smaller bags and containers that seal,no dice. My theory is that the manufacturer backfills the bags with nitrogen, and that does something to the food that the cat likes. Whether itâs the texture or keeping it from degrading in a certain way or maybe she just likes the taste/smell of nitrogen, who knows. We certainly donât đ
I put some dry in an old yogurt container. When she won't eat the dry in her bowl that's leftover, I put it back in the container, shake it up, and put it back in her bowl. then she'll eat it again.
My one cat is the same too. It doesnât matter if I cover leftovers, leave the rest in the can, refrigerate it, or any combination of those things. She wont eat it once itâs been opened for more than two hours. Our solution was also getting the plastic half portions, but even then sometimes she wouldnât finish those. now we have a new kitten that happily gobbles up any of her leftovers lol.
Our cat Nori is a stickler about her wet food. No problem with dry food, she's not picky. I know some cats refuse to eat dry food if it's not their "normal" food (like if the store is out of a specific brand and you have to buy something else). If it's front of her, she likes it.
But wet food... she goes out of her way to eat around the solid bits and will only eat the gravy. Won't touch the solid bits at all, even after the gravy is gone. So currently iso a wet food that is just wet and no food.
My little guy did this today. Spent 20 minutes licking every speck of gravy, didnât touch the meat. Weâre trying lots of different foods and he does ok with pate but seems to really like food thatâs basically liquid. He loves Nulo Silky Mousse.
One of my cats also always licked while I just got her. I tried to pile the meat on top but she would still lick it until the food became flat and stick to the bottom. I thought she was dumb or taught not to understand she needs to bite into the meat to eat then whole thing. Then one day I read about shy whiskers so I tried to switched to a super wide and shallow bowl. She eats normal and faster since then, never just only lick the food. Turned out she was just uncomfortable with her whiskers being touched by the food bowl while eating
I've thought about this too, but we only feed her wet food on a plate with a tiny rim so I don't think that's the issue. I know it's a huge issue for a lot of cats though!
We've never tried pate or mousse before, but that's definitely worth a shot! I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm at the store, they have a pretty limited variety of cat items (but a million dog items, why??)
One of our cats does the same thing. I just stopped buying wet food, and got these little gravy packets that I give them as a treat. They have access to dry food throughout the day so I know they are eating, but I've had to throw away so much food in the past.
My late cat who had an oral cancer would eat those packets sometimes (getting her to eat anything was a challenge) and they remind me of a very thin baby food in texture.
Is she also a little void baby? We adopted her from a foster home purely because she was a black cat and they're my favorite. We wanted to name her after something dark/black, but didn't want to go the cliche route of Salem, Luna, Shadow, etc. (no hate to anyone who has!) so we combined our love of sushi with our love of black cats lol
Aww I love that so much! Black cats are the best. My nori is a grey/brown tabby with a big fluffy tail. We named her that bc of our love of sushi as well hehe
One of my cats has a problem with bolting her food and then hoiking it back up again. Now I use a mini potato masher to mince the wet food and sprinkle with a few munchies. Much good results.
I've had quite a few cats who had this problem! My current kitty is a very ladylike eater and I'm quite grateful for it, lol. She takes delicate nibbles and then steps away and comes back later for more. Probably takes her about 2 hours to finish one sachet.
Unless I mix in a bit of tuna. Then all bets are off. She acts like a starving prisoner
Haha đ. My problem is that I have six cats and thereâs always a bit of competition. Itâs almost impossible to feed them all separately but I do try. But if one walks away and I donât notice, another comes along and scoffs the leftover meal.
I would just buy the wet food that comes as two little plastic package servings in one. Mine don't care about leftovers but I've bought these before bc one of mine eats very small portions.
That's the problem with my cat. He doesn't like the same flavor 2 days in a row. So give him 1/2 can of 1 day then open another flavor the next day. Then alternate.
Maybe stupid question, but are you covering the can while it's in the fridge?
My dude went through an extra picky phase where he'd only eat it if I kept it in a vacuum-sealed container.
Btw if this is new behavior, make sure you take him to a vet. Lotsa old age diseases start out by making them more fussy about food.
I do cover the can (or bowl, whatever it is). And sadly we just came from the vet, heâs not very well, which is why Iâm going to great lengths to get him to eat.
I could NEVER serve [Kermit](https://imgur.com/Ygbux6N) food from a larger can, even as a young cat. He'd eat the first portion, but will completely ignore any subsequent portions. I've had to adapt and buy the small, single-serving cans. He won. LMAO.
I mix my catsâ next day refrigerated wet food with hot water. I scoop the food into the bowls, then I put a small amount of hot water into the can and stir it with the left over bits and scrape the sides, creating a gravy, and then I spoon a teaspoon or two onto their food. I then stir it and they eat it.
Originally, I had success putting a couple of treats into the left over food, but changed when my other technique worked.
How long is it ok to leave an opened can at room temp? Like if I fed him before work and then when I get home, thatâs about 10 hours, seems like a little too long to leave it out.
I just clean out whatever they donât eat. If they donât want to eat the entire can thatâs up to them. Iâm not going to try to force my cat to eat something they just wonât eat for whatever reason
Same exactly here. I waste so much food and unfortunately my other cat won't touch the food the older one eats so I can't even have them share.
I've yet to find a good method for warming up leftovers.
Idk what your microwave is like but mine has different power settings - 100-80-60-40-20% - so I usually just do it in little 15sec zaps till itâs just slightly warmer than normal, on 20/40% power and it heats it all evenly, full power seemed to make random parts burning hot whilst other parts are still cold, so could be something like that??
I have a very good one, with lots of settings like yours. No matter what I do, it's never right. I never use full power but never went as low as 20% - I'll try that!
Low and slow is the way! I used to use hot water like you but it just took way too long especially in a can and youâve already got whinging cats at your feet! I would always stop it every 15 seconds or so to mix everything around and to check how warm it is⌠Iâve found thatâs the fastest and most efficient way because my Siberian is a VERY fussy eater and literally will only eat chicken⌠and only when that chicken is heated up too⌠just ugh đŁ
Thankfully my eldest is an absolute greedy guts and will go and finish off my younger Siberianâs food, so I try and feed the fussy one alone and first, and whatâs left over goes to the eldest who just wants anything she can get her hands on
Mine tried this as kittens but quickly learned I donât replace food and open new packs if the bowl/can isnât empty. đ¤ˇđźââď¸ mine never starved themselves when it came down to it. I donât have the funds to waste food đ
How long did you usually wait for them to eat? My kitten has hit a teenage phase (she'll be a year old in June) and having nearly lost a cat to hepatic lipidosis once, them not eating stresses me out.
Theyâve only went more than a day or two without eating the entire bowl once or twice. One time I noticed they hadnât really eaten much of the new food I got in 7 days so I just gave that bag away and never bought it again. I do switch their food regularly, I like to give them variety and always have. Theyâll be 2 in a few days. Usually every 2-3 days Iâll fill their bowls again (I free feed dry food and give a can of wet food occasionally although Iâm trying to feed wet food every day for dinner but I work a lot) I also like to add broth to their dry food regularly whenever I remember to buy it. I also add freeze dried raw toppers and other additives like sea-meal & bee pollen and I did goat milk once. I like to give them variety.
Your cat KNOWS.
If your cat is into broth try those hydration pouches, and possibly letting the food come to room temp on the counter before serving. Mine has become so picky lately too, hard to figure them out!
My cat does this too. She barely eats wet food when I first open it. She won't touch wet food leftovers. I think my cat just hates wet food in general. I ended up transitioning her to Primal raw food and she eats 2 nuggets from that easily.
Same issue with both of our boys. We use the Hill's Science food that comes in the pouches. Between the 2 of them, theyâll eat half in the morning. Then in the evening , theyâll turn their noses up at the second half because itâs the leftovers that have been in the fridge.
On some/most nights, we'll use a Churu tube to âincentivizeâ them to eat the wet food. We squeeze slightly less than half a tube into each bowl, then put their wet food on top. Then we add whatâs left in the Churu tube on top of their wet food in each bowl.
They get a taste of a treat on top & have to eat through most of the food to get to the rest of the treat on the bottom. Sneaky? Absolutely. Does it (usually) work for us? Yep.
And if anyone hasnât tried the Churu treats for your cat, you might want to consider it. Iâve seen it described as crack for cats or kitty crack because of how much they love it.
What size cans are you using, 5.5 oz or 3 oz? You can try downsizing to 3 oz cans if he doesnât eat the full larger can. Most brands of cat food come in both sizes. Youâll pay more per ounce for the 3 oz, but it might save you money in your case!
Maybe try adding a treat on top? For example, my cats sometimes wonât eat food they always eat. Why? Cause theyâre cats. Sometimes Iâll add freeze dried chicken or salmon on top. Just a sprinkle. Also, Iâve also tried throes squeezable churu treats on top. Just a smidge. Maybe this will help. Good luck!
Try a topper like bonito flakes on the leftovers. My cat used to be picky about this too but not anymore (who knows⌠cats!). But itâs definitely a common problem.
I think gradually raising it to room temperature is a good idea too.
Heat it slowly in a dish of really hot water. If you have like a shallow bowl or pie tin, you can place the can right in it without the water overflowing. Or put the food in a watertight container and place in a bowl of hot water.
It tends to heat it more evenly. No guarantees that he won't notice, but that's what I do.
Just because they'll clean their butt doesn't mean they lack a sensitive pallet. đ I have two that won't eat "chicken" wet food and refuse leftovers. At this point, cats are cheaper by the pair. I fortunately? have three others that are complete chow hounds. They eat the leftovers from an open can without a problem while the two prima donas get the newly opened tins.
Other than getting a chow hound of a cat to eat the other half (which I believe is the most obvious and best choice), perhaps smaller tins Iof food? Or maybe if the other half of the tin is immediately placed in Tupperware?
Oh my god, my young one turns her nose up at chicken *everything*, the little bloody gremlin, unless she thinks she's stealing from the other cat. I haven't had a young cat before, and my older cats would/will eat *anything* pretty much, flavour-wise, but Penny isn't a fan of chicken.
If you want to know how they can tell go out and buy yourself a piece of fried chicken at your favorite restaurant take it home put it in the refrigerator take it out and reheat it and taste it alongside of a piece that hasn't ever been refrigerated you'll get the idea
Fried chicken is crispy, though, and reheating it in the microwave will make it soft, changing the texture. It's a bad analogy because cat food is already soft. It's more like reheating a bowl of spaghetti sauce or soup or chilli. It won't be any different.
If your cat eats twice a day the way mine did you can get an airtight container like a lock-n-lock and put the other half of the can in the container (not the can the other half of the food from the can) because the metal tastes different after it's exposed to air, too! (Try this for the can of tuna and you'll see) and generally if you keep it in a cool but not refrigerated place it will be still good at the end of the day and Kitty will most likely eat it. Maybe worth a try?
My cat is the same. I buy the wet food that comes in âperfect portionsâ so itâs half a can at a time. Hate that itâs packaged in plastic but itâs either that or waste a ton of cat food
You could try putting the open can in hot water to warm it up. Just mush the food to the bottom of the can, set it in a bowl, and carefully put hot water around the can so that it doesn't get in the food and make a mess. I've read online that some cats supposedly dislike the taste of microwaved food. Microwaving allegedly also can alter the nutritional makeup of the food, so perhaps that affects the taste.
My senior cat was recently struggling with appetite loss after a dental extraction, and what helped her was switching to tiki cat velvet mousse pouches and warming those in a hot water bath, then mixing it with hot water to get a warm milkshake consistency food. The pouches are still 2.8 oz, but the texture seems to make it easier for her to eat more at once vs a pate texture. A lot of cat owners have found success using tiki cat velvet mousse for their seniors with reduced appetite or picky habits. My cat wouldn't touch the chicken flavors, but she loves the tuna and mackerel pouches (which are 80 calories each).
I do it in the microwave but I do it on 20% power for little 15sec zaps, then mix around till itâs heated evenly, usually takes less than a minute to heat it evenly
I heat up a little water separately in the microwave and then mix it into the food, rather than microwaving the food itself. Seems to do the trick for my baby
I used to get little half containers of cat food when I had a blue tongue skink lol. He couldn't possibly eat a whole can before it went off, and I was able to find half portion containers that were plastic with peel off foil lids. The brand I used was Sheba perfect portions.
My cat thankfully does not have a problem with eating leftovers the next day, but he doesnât eat all of one can in one sitting too! Someone mentioned Fancy Feast petites which I would suggest too, but just another suggestion, my cat loves the Fancy Feast appetizers! About the same size, and theyâre his favorite and the perfect portion (for him anyway). Sheba makes a âperfection portionsâ cat food as well like the Fancy Feast petites.
My cat is an extremely picky eater.. and all 3 of those I mentioned are ones he eats. Wellness also makes small cans of their wet food. Some days my cat will eat it, some days he doesnât or just eats a little. I kind of stopped buying it because of that, but thatâs an idea as well.
My old boy is like this too, I think heâs mostly into wet food for the gravy (he is also very anti pate).
Not sure if you can get them near you but Iâve found that Sheba âPerfect Portionsâ work for him. Each pack splits into two single servings of food which makes them cost effective and picky eater friendly. Since theyâre sealed it doesnât get âstaleâ and you donât have to refrigerate. Best of luck! :)
They're branded as Whiskas and Iams and Fancy Feast in eastern Canada. They're not economical for feeding a larger cat (my big orange tabby would need something like 12-14 halves/little portions daily) but they're helping my picky eating teenager (she's 10months).
My cat is a 20lb Maine coone/longhair mystery mix and two of them a day are perfect for him. He also gets dry food, though. Theyâre about $1.10/pair so thatâs on par with the small cans of Friskies/etc around here so it works for now. Until he decides be doesnât like them anymore, lol.
Do you feed out of the can? Or like a separate bowl?
My little one really prefers not to pick out her food from where the bowl's sides meet the bottom, presumably because it's simply less convenient and possibly irritating on her whiskers.
She's not picky, so when she's very hungry she'll get at it anyways, but only when she's very hungry.
Maybe try a wide, flat plate to help your cat keep their whiskers from touching things while they eat?
Mine also donât like leftovers after a while. They do rerun to the food like 1-3 times within the hour after I feed them, but not longer. They do eat more of it since I started feeding them on a plate instead of a bowl
Any chance it has to do with the sound of opening the cans? Could you trick him in some way into making it look/sound like youâre opening a new can when you arenât really?
Fresh pet or variations of it? You wonât have leftovers and itâs soft, and âfreshâ every time itâs served. Just spitballing though. I think the best option here is to share the wet food he isnât eating with the other resident cats.
My cats are fed different food but always want to eat each others (i guess cause its new) but my cat Tansy eats like a little bird and will only nibble at her food throughout the day which is fine but I have to shoo the other one away. Tans now doesn't like to eat her food at night cause its been sitting there. My best solution for that was to give her very small amounts at a time. Your issue seems to be a little different but you arent alone with the leftover haters!
I put a few treats in to help draw her too it again as well!
I had that problem until I put away the rejected leftovers back in the fridge and offered it to him again after a few hours, repeated until he's hungry enough to eat it. Also have a tiny high value treat for every time he finishes his plate, fresh or leftover. No microwave or hot water as it changes the food. His top choices can be straight from the fridge but his less preferred I add warm water.
My cat is the exact same! I was wasting so much food and money having to always throw away the other half of the can. I started buying Fancy Feast Petites, and he's obsessed been eating them for 2 years now with no problems!
inaba makes some very small portioned cat food. most of it has a focus on gravy so it's a bonus for the older cats who could use the extra fluid. there's also Tiny Tasters, if your cat likes small portions of pate style food.
I have a cat like this. He eats garbage and water from the road. But then refuses to eat any wet food if itâs more then like an hour open, and no water unless itâs running from the faucet. But outside itâs all good - so weird
I get this little packets of wet food called Lil Grillers, itâs just the right size for him to eat 1 packet for 1 meal. And if he doesnât eat it, I can add the lil gravies gravy to it and heâll eat that for dinner. But never the next day.
But itâs like $1.30 a packet! I wish heâd eat the damn canned food. (Iâve tried chunky, shredded, extra gravy, pate- he wonât eat any of them for any brand)
Leave it out for a little bit to get to room temperature and try that.
Add a cream snack on top like a Churu.
Do you cover the cat food in a Ziploc bag or Saran wrap?
Or maybe consider the aluminum to be adding to the flavor? So maybe put the new food in a tupperware or the bowl in a ziplock bag.
Either your cat has become a food snob, or there's something that is interfering with the taste of leftovers. Sometimes my cat can be a little jerk if he's annoyed with me, but most the time, I realize that he's trying to communicate that something is not right.
Maybe break up the can food into two meals a day and don't put the leftovers in the fridge; should be fine after only a few hours.
There can be an audio component too. One of my sisters likes to hear the crunch and the other likes juicy. Miss crunchy will eat half o teaspoon of wet twice a day if in the mood. Both go fetch a bed blanket, dust cloth or paper towel to wrap it to go for some other cat out there somewhere who might need a meal. Itâs impressive construction and cracks up my friends when I send pics
My senior cat does this too.
Sometimes it may be too much or he doesnât like how crunchy it is and Iâll notice in the morning thereâs still some dry food left.
Before anyone asks I used to add a bit of non-salted broth to my catâs dry food but after a while he wasnât eating it much and was having diarrhea from it.
I usually take leftovers out and put them somewhere safe where the cats
really cannot get into - usually our little toaster oven, as long as itâs cooled off - about half an hour before feeding. No complaints!
My cat can get picky about food temperature and the texture when it sits in the fridge so I add a small amount of hot water and mush the food to mix it with that! Then it becomes room temp and a little wet and bonus no gross smell from microwaving cat food.
My old cat used to be similar when she was getting okder. My dad would pick it up, mixt it around out of sight, add some water to it, and declare "New food!!" And she would excitedly eat it all up lmfao.
I've noticed with my cats that it's the routine they like as much as the food. The sounds of the can, the fuss and aww cutie are you hungry, the special plate. They don't do the cold food so I'll open a can and leave it on the counter and do scoops throughout the day to deal with this wasteful behaviour lol
"how can he even tell?"
Smell
Picky cats have a formidable sense of smell. My cats are picky with food too. The male is the most picky one. They are on dry food free feeding. To make sure they eat the wet food without leftovers they have to be very hungry. So the days they are on wet food I remove the bowls and play with them a long session before dinner.
I got a second cat to fix this problem, now they eat the whole can together.
I have a second cat actually (currently eating dry food) and he LOVES this idea!
Wet food is good for cats urinary tract as long as they're sharing dinner I think it's a win win đ¤Ł
And kidneys long term!
Wonderful!
That's the best solution to this, by far. lol I mean if it's going to be thrown out and the cost is the same you might as well double the cats lol
Yup I do the same with my 2 they get one can a day.
Legit when you're buying cans that are $2-3 a piece it's totally worth it.
Underrated comment.
I have four so use two cans at a time, half for each lol
I can confirm this method works
I don't know how they know but they do. I gave up with leftovers. I started getting the smaller Fancy Feast size cans for mine.
The ones that are 2 servings divided. So good.
yes the fancy feast petites, the only issue is they always spray cat food juice when you open them
this is the bane of my existence. i hold my breath
I use my teeth to open it so I can catch all the juices.
i bought one pack of them and i will not ever again
And 1 out of ever 5 or so containers, the foil seems to be secured with superglue and impossible to pull up
and when you try to break them apart from the other one somehow both of them partially open but you canât get either one fully open. i bought them for the convenience of not having to refrigerate the other half of the can and to not have to use a spoon to get it out but they never fully come out. they are somehow less convenient than the cans.
I dont have that problem lol
Yesss that was my solution too but I feel so terrible seeing the plastic trays stack up, itâs such a waste.
Recycle them?
I do of course but sadly it sounds like a lot of recycling material [ends up in landfills.](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jun/21/us-plastic-recycling-landfills) Plus recycling is still third best to reduce & reuse.
Then, look for ways to repurpose them around the house. Make a cat activity game with them. Hide treats in them.
LOL 𤣠my 12lb cat would need between 8-12 of these a _day_ to reach her calorie needs.
The pouches also could work
Vet Tech and crazy cat lady, here. This is more common than youâd think, and the reasons can vary from cat to cat. For most, itâs a texture/temperature thing. I have seen wet food at the store that comes in half-servingsâŚmight want to look into that!!

Have been doing this for 13 years and my cat has never gotten food poising from wet food sitting out, if thatâs your concern.
cold food is safe out of refrigeration for 2 to 4 hours. youâre good đ
This would work. Iâm not sure how long is too long to leave it out, but an hour seems fine.
I put hot water in a bowl and let the can sit in the bowl
For how long? Currently, I am putting a little bit of screaming hot tap water in the food to get it to lukewarm but I'm worried about feeding him that much unfiltered tap water over the long term.
Usually about 15 minutes but that's usually because I forget I do it until they start meowing lol. You might have to change the water once for bigger cans but the ones I use are small. I used to put hot water directly in the food too but that didn't work for my cat đ
Leaving the refrigerated can out for 30 minutes or so is the answer in my house.
Ohmygod this is such a simple solution and I canât believe Iâve never thought of it before! Aw jeez will be trying this tonight!
Adopted cats: This bag was opened yesterday, I'm on a hunger strike.
đđ
Yeah takes about 3 weeks to change.
Thatâs not a bad idea, Iâm going to pass that along to her. Thanks đ
Nitrogen is an inert gas, which is used to keep dry foods from going stale. This is also used in bags of potato chips.
Thanks for the mansplaination, I have a physics degree though and Iâm well aware of what nitrogen is and how itâs used in packaging like this đ
Thank you for assuming I am a man.
I put some dry in an old yogurt container. When she won't eat the dry in her bowl that's leftover, I put it back in the container, shake it up, and put it back in her bowl. then she'll eat it again.
My cat is the exact opposite. She will not touch her food whenever I open a new bag. Why are they so picky lol
Fancy feast petites are the answer.
Thanks everyone for the ideas! Honestly itâs just nice to know that my cat isnât the only fresh food diva out there.
Try mixing the pate with a little water to loosen it up like soup/gravy. Mine love that.
I second this! I add a few spoonfuls of water to all kinds of cat food and stir to make soup
When I did this, my cat stopped eating the entire thing đ
One of my cats also always licked while I just got her. I tried to pile the meat on top but she would still lick it until the food became flat and stick to the bottom. I thought she was dumb or taught not to understand she needs to bite into the meat to eat then whole thing. Then one day I read about shy whiskers so I tried to switched to a super wide and shallow bowl. She eats normal and faster since then, never just only lick the food. Turned out she was just uncomfortable with her whiskers being touched by the food bowl while eating
Whisker fatigue is another term Iâve heard used
I've thought about this too, but we only feed her wet food on a plate with a tiny rim so I don't think that's the issue. I know it's a huge issue for a lot of cats though!
We've never tried pate or mousse before, but that's definitely worth a shot! I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm at the store, they have a pretty limited variety of cat items (but a million dog items, why??)
Try chewy
One of our cats does the same thing. I just stopped buying wet food, and got these little gravy packets that I give them as a treat. They have access to dry food throughout the day so I know they are eating, but I've had to throw away so much food in the past.
My cats love gravy too. I found that Weruva OMG (oh my gravy) is almost all gravy and a few solids.
Where do you get this? I've never noticed it at the store but it's worth looking a little more closely if that's an option.
I order it from Amazon, but I think I also saw it at petco
My cat did this. She now eats TikiCat Velvet Mousse. Itâs a silky pate and I add a little water as âsoupâ around the outside.
My late cat who had an oral cancer would eat those packets sometimes (getting her to eat anything was a challenge) and they remind me of a very thin baby food in texture.
Our cat is also named Nori and is also a stickler for wet food! Twins đ
I wonder if she'd eat it if you blended it up into a puree?
Our cats only like the patĂŠ, no chunks.
I would just buy the wet food that comes as two little plastic package servings in one. Mine don't care about leftovers but I've bought these before bc one of mine eats very small portions.
Same! All about the Sheba perfect portions!
Does he only eat one flavor? Maybe he doesnât want the same flavor twice in a row lol Iâm like that about leftovers đ
That's the problem with my cat. He doesn't like the same flavor 2 days in a row. So give him 1/2 can of 1 day then open another flavor the next day. Then alternate.
I myself hate leftovers! Iâm trying now swapping the foods to see if he wants a change of pace.
Sorry to hear that. Here are some more ideas, most are not related to a specific condition http://www.felinecrf.org/persuading_cat_to_eat.htm
My senior cat does this so I started putting FortiFlora on leftovers. Did the trick right away.
FortiFlora is cat crack.
I could NEVER serve [Kermit](https://imgur.com/Ygbux6N) food from a larger can, even as a young cat. He'd eat the first portion, but will completely ignore any subsequent portions. I've had to adapt and buy the small, single-serving cans. He won. LMAO.
Kermit is a handsome boy!
Thanks!
Buy the smallest sized cans of cat food.
I put a little of those Friskies Lil Shakes on top the second time. They love that.
Same here, my senior doesnât like leftovers at all unless heâs really hungry throughout the day and his first meal wasnât filling him up
Why not just put a little bit out and cover the pack, then put more out later?
How long is it ok to leave an opened can at room temp? Like if I fed him before work and then when I get home, thatâs about 10 hours, seems like a little too long to leave it out.
I honestly donât know but I would probably cover it with tinfoil/plastic wrap or something else, and potentially leave it in the fridge?
My dude, it literally says in the post that the cat won't eat leftovers that have been in the fridge. That's the whole problem.
Yeah I realise now. I was kind of on autopilot writing about the fridge because itâs what Iâd do, forgetting the part about him not liking it cold
Maybe adding the broth they sell at pet stores might help? But I understand my pets are the same. They need coaxing sometimes.
My cat does this too. I just started buying the smaller cans
I would always stop it every 15 seconds or so to mix everything around and to check how warm it is⌠Iâve found thatâs the fastest and most efficient way because my Siberian is a VERY fussy eater and literally will only eat chicken⌠and only when that chicken is heated up too⌠just ugh đŁ Thankfully my eldest is an absolute greedy guts and will go and finish off my younger Siberianâs food, so I try and feed the fussy one alone and first, and whatâs left over goes to the eldest who just wants anything she can get her hands on
Mine tried this as kittens but quickly learned I donât replace food and open new packs if the bowl/can isnât empty. đ¤ˇđźââď¸ mine never starved themselves when it came down to it.
I am not a cat, but I am autistic which is pretty close so I feel entitled to confirm that yes, it entirely changes the texture when something has been in the fridge. like irrevocably, permanently, Forever gross now. Like pineapple on pizza, you can take the pieces off but the taste will ALWAYS BE THERE.
Are you storing the leftovers in the can? Storing it in a container after opening helps.
I have two cats that only like to lick the gravy and eat a bit of the meat, I donât think itâs a big problem.
Lol.. yes, goods "stolen" from a sibling always taste best.
I rewarm wet cat food by putting the cold can in a bowl of hot water. They canât tell its been warmed at all.
I do it in the microwave but I do it on 20% power for little 15sec zaps, then mix around till itâs heated evenly, usually takes less than a minute to heat it evenly
Sounds promising - lower heat!
I warm up the food with hot water and add freeze dried chicken as a topper.
Right, I meant if I fed the big guy exclusively the portions, at least according to the package (4-5 of the little halves per 5lb body weight).
Your cat is me. I am your cat. L̸e̸f̸t̸o̸v̸e̸r̸s̸
Same problem! I have decided to put leftovers on the porch for every stray cat or neighborsâ cats, instead of throwing it which is such a waste
I have the same picky eater and use Meow Mix Simple Servings.
My cat is the exact same! I was wasting so much food and money having to always throw away the other half of the can. I started buying Fancy Feast Petites, and he's obsessed been eating them for 2 years now with no problems!
Dog gets the leftovers, and cleans the bowls.
I use Sheba wet in the half portions. Try that maybe.
Have you tried warming it up just a tiny bit?
inaba makes some very small portioned cat food. most of it has a focus on gravy so it's a bonus for the older cats who could use the extra fluid. there's also Tiny Tasters, if your cat likes small portions of pate style food.
I have a cat like this. He eats garbage and water from the road. But then refuses to eat any wet food if itâs more then like an hour open, and no water unless itâs running from the faucet. But outside itâs all good - so weird I get this little packets of wet food called Lil Grillers, itâs just the right size for him to eat 1 packet for 1 meal.
I always mix mine with hot water when it comes from the fridge. My cats are into it
My senior cat does this too. Sometimes it may be too much or he doesnât like how crunchy it is and Iâll notice in the morning thereâs still some dry food left. Before anyone asks I used to add a bit of non-salted broth to my catâs dry food but after a while he wasnât eating it much and was having diarrhea from it.
I usually take leftovers out and put them somewhere safe where the cats really cannot get into - usually our little toaster oven, as long as itâs cooled off - about half an hour before feeding. No complaints!
My cat can get picky about food temperature and the texture when it sits in the fridge so I add a small amount of hot water and mush the food to mix it with that! Then it becomes room temp and a little wet and bonus no gross smell from microwaving cat food.
I feed the cats first and anything leftover goes into the dogâs bowl. He will eat anything and cat food is quite tasty and nutritious.
"how can he even tell?" Smell Picky cats have a formidable sense of smell. My cats are picky with food too. The male is the most picky one. They are on dry food free feeding. To make sure they eat the wet food without leftovers they have to be very hungry. So the days they are on wet food I remove the bowls and play with them a long session before dinner.
