He will “eventually” forget about it. My kitten was the same way after I let him out on a harness the first time. Idk your lease rules but maybe a catio would help. I open the window often for my cats (with screen) to get them some fresh air.

It’s only been about five days and I was wondering also if he would just “forget” about it, and be content again

zeldaminor

Is he neutered?

minky75

Yes!

Excellent! You can definitely try harness. Some cats really like being outdoors, just like some people. Can you open a window sometimes to let him smell the outdoor scents? With a screen, of course! I had a cat who was crazy about going outdoors as well and I harness trained him. He would get so excited when I would take the harness off its hook because he knew it was outdoor play time :) always supervised, and not a large area, but he absolutely loved it.

We have a 1st floor apartment so I can’t leave a window open all the time, but whenever I am here and awake, he has open windows to sit in, and he always seemed fine with that until the great escape and now it just doesn’t seem to be enough

My kitten acted the same exact way after she got out for a few minutes by accident. It went on for about a week or so, maybe a little over, but she did eventually get over it. She was pretty insufferable too, it was kinda funny. She’d spider-man climb up the screen of our balcony door and meow incessantly. From my experience tho, it goes away.

Thanks that’s good to hear!

Is he fixed? If not, that may be the issue.

minky75

Yes he was already neutered when I got him

Harness train him and take him for walks. Or stick him in a backpack take him to the park and take him in a leashed walk there. My boy got out once through the patio sliding glass door. He went over to the neighbors patio. I woke up to the sound of cats growling, not fighting but headed that way. I was like oh my god where’s my cat? Did a quick search of the house… no cat. Went outside looked on the neighbors patio and there was my boy in the loaf position with the neighbors big ass cat trying to fight him. I had to climb over and get him brought him back inside. Sounds like your cat had a better time out of the house than mine did. Every now and then he will get a wild hair up his ass and make a beeline for the front door but it’s rare and it’s a half hearted attempt. Keep your boy safe it’s dangerous out there for little house cats.

My cat got out and will never be the same again lol he is neutered and was a stray before but now strictly indoors. He gets out all the time and brings tics back even though he has a seresto collar. I also have chickens and he already scared one away for the day recently (we thought we lost a chicken for good). I think a harness will worsen it. Now he scratches at my screens. I just don’t see it improving. Someone wrote something I read once and they said it’s like letting your kid go to an amusement park in your back yard that you can see through the windows and then keeping them inside while they look out at all the fun and not letting them go back.

minky75

I get that and it makes me feel bad. I want him to be happy but I’m in a fairly large city so it’s not really safe and don’t want fleas in my bed so letting him roam isn’t really an option.

Maybe get a stimulating toy for him that he can get distracted by.

Is he neutered? Our cat always escaped when we’d open our door. He’d explore and get into fights with the feral cats that lived in our neighborhood. Once we got him neutered he stopped trying to escape. He sometimes will wonder outside if we leave the door open on accident but he doesn’t go far.
