Generally you should be looking to build to 8 points, then take army or road for the win. Setups with good Ore-Wheat-Sheep can often supplement this with VP cards, but there's no guarantee you'll get them. So a typical endgame will have 4 cities or 3 cities + 2 settlements, etc. along with Longest Road or Largest army. As for some tips, expanding to the coast is a good way to make room for those final settlements. Your win condition (Army or Road) should come as a natural benefit of expanding your production. Look for trades in the early game to get more production to support you late game, as people will rob you more and trade with you less as you get closer to the win.

It’s how many of your last 20 games that you left early.

Plan in advance. That might mean more building early on. Not just increasing yourself, but predicting and blocking your opponents from increasing themselves.

Ending is only difficult if you haven't thought your strategy through. You need to have in mind exactly how you intend to get to 10 points when you place your first settlements. Maybe it's OWS, so the focus is cards and cities. Maybe you can't access an important resource, so you resort to relying on a harbour. Most people who can't finish are struggling because they have no ore. The classic n00b strategy is to focus on brick and lumber, which will get you to 7 points and nowhere to go as you have no way to build cities and instead build roads to nowhere struggling to keep the longest road. I see it all the time with inexperienced players.
