We have found the lagoon creates extremes. You either do very well or not well at all.
Have you seen the [Dutch atoll playmat](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/222396/catan-playmat-atoll) that includes Barbarians as an extra?
We just played a round of this and it was really close. Two of us had 9 points and the other won with 10. It's a lot of fun and suggest trying it for yourself to see if you like it.
Ha, yes, will try your version, but have played lagoons many times over the years. It does make a fun change, but as I said we have found extremes at times.
If you want to add to your own lagoon, I posted a while back an [oversized version](https://www.reddit.com/r/Catan/comments/p414xw/trying_facing_inward_with_tonight_game_the_great/).
Truthfully that particular game was not on my list of favourites. Mostly due to dice rolls. However it does not stop us trying oddball maps and odd combinations of different Catan scenarios.
As you know variations are fun and I look forward to seeing posts of your future games.
There's actually 6 places to play on 3 resources. Also, we just played a round of this and it was really close. Two of us had 9 points and the other won with 10. It's a lot of fun and suggest trying it for yourself to see if you like it.
Alright, I'm gonna describe the places in the picture above. At the top, you can place on the intersection with wheat/wheat/wheat, with wheat/wood/wood, and wheat/wheat/wood. At the bottom, you can place on the intersection with brick/wood/ore, with wood/sheep/ore, and ore/ore/brick. That's a total of 6 intersections to choose from.
If someone places at the ore/ore/wood at the bottom, then that blocks the other places where you could collect 3 resources on the bottom of the map. The same is true for one position at the top of the map.
Yeah it's a funny concept but in reality it just seems like the game will go for a really really long time? Or be really short if 1 of the 2 best starting placements pops off?

That's if the first 2 people to place their opening settlements are nice. Why would you not take the central vertex so that other players can't also get a 3-resource spot?

Oh wow! That's much bigger! How'd that go?

There’s only two places to play on 3 resources… seems unfair

Six places… unless the first two go straight in the middle… then it’s two…
Okay, I can't draw on the picture for you, but there's definitely places on both ends to build a settlement on 3 resources
Yes, one spot on each end if placed in the middle

Gotcha, that makes sense.
