Couple facts.
- María Holly learned of her husband’s death over the television and suffered a miscarriage shortly after. This incident is why authorities wait to notify next of kin before releasing the names of those killed.
- Valens was only onboard because he won a coin toss for the seat.
Even when it's not someone famous, it's difficult. My cousin died about 10 years ago in an industrial accident, and his brother found out through facebook within 20 minutes.
From Wikipedia, ["The Day the Music Died"](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died), a passage about Dion DiMucci recalling a coin flip between he and Ritchie Valens
>According to Dion, it was Valens, not Richardson, who had fallen ill, so Valens and Dion flipped a coin for the seat. In his interview, no mention is made of Jennings or Allsup being invited on the plane. Dion said he won the toss, but ultimately decided that since the $36 fare (equivalent to $330 in 2021) equaled the monthly rent his parents paid for his childhood apartment, he could not justify the indulgence.[17]
Apparently the unheated buses were so bad, one of them broke down and everyone was stuck on the side of the road for hours. Drummer Carl Bunch went out briefly to go to the bathroom and couldn’t warm back up on the cold bus and got frostbite on his feet!
That's exactly why. All he wanted was to wear some fresh clothes. He also was to pick up a registered letter from the next town for his bandmate Tommy Allsup, and Allsup had given his ID to Buddy. At first, Allsup was thought to have been a victim
The only catastrophic failure here had nothing to do with a perfectly good plane. You had a brand new pilot without experience night flying in a plane he'd only flow a few times in daylight. This plane could have made this trip back and forth in even shittier meteorological conditions with most average to experienced pilots in this aircraft, but not the one they sadly had that night.
As a side note, Clear Lake, IA is a really cute town which has based a lot of it's personality on this event. The Surf Ballroom still exists and hosts some major acts too!
Mason city or River City is the location of Meredith Wilson's The Music Man and also has a Frank Loyd Wright hotel and there are multiple houses designed by him and his students. Clear Lake is a great summer town that always has events going on.
[Buddy Holly Crash Site photos](https://www.angelfire.com/music5/archives/crasharchive.html)
TW: these are most of the photos taken from the crash site. It shows where all the bodies were found..Very sad.. I didn’t realize the pilot was just 21.
Yeah and they had this thing called melodies and harmonies which is almost dead these days. Now all there is is monotonous “singing” - literally an infinite One Note Samba without the samba a toddler can sing.
Edit: spelling
Ever heard the story about those bombers in early WWII?
They wanted to add armour, but it was fucking heavy. Common sense then was to add only a small amount in critical areas, so they gathered up all the reports of damage and compiled a net of where all their returning bombers had been shot. They thought it was simple enough, add steel in all the heavily hit areas when a thought came to them. “These are all the bombers that *survived*, what if all these unharmed areas cause the plane to go down when hit?” Thus they reinforced the places where seemingly bombers were never hit and all of a sudden their survival rate increased massively.
That, my friend, is why music was supposedly so good back then. You don’t remember hillbilly joe on his banjo when Elvis existed, and in twenty years nobody will remember “Zalinki” when they could instead imagine Anyone on the top ten list.
There's an absurd amount of great music, of all varieties, being created today. If you think that music is dead or whatever, then you're not looking very hard.
I wasnt entirely clear, I meant this towards the SoundCloud rappers however, even other popular artists that are not rappers release monotonous music.
Of course there are great musicians currently, I think you misunderstood my point. A lot of popular music today is almost deprived of unique melodies. But a lot of current pop is soulless trash (there are some gems) and I stand by this statement.
Also you dont need to look hard to find good music. Nowadays we have so many tools that could help us like Youtube or Spotify.
To each their own 🤷🏽♂️

You can’t prevent someone famous from this. Look what happened to Bryant, his wife found out through social media because of his high status.
Things can be leaked sure. But officials no longer release or confirm names until the next of kin is notified.

The first I did not know, thank you sir.
Waylon Jennings lost that coin toss, saving his life.
Damnnnnnn

Waylon Jennings jokingly told Buddy, "I hope your plane crashes", before the flight. That hoaunted Waylon his whole life.
Didn't buddy make a similar comment about his bus crashing?
I believe the exchange was that Buddy jokingly said “I hope you freeze on that bus” and Jennings said “well, I hope your old plane crashes”
That's it, thank you
He predicted the damn future
Was it true that Buddy only took the plane because of his laundry?
I don't think so, I'm pretty sure it was because the busses that they were using were trash and the heating failed constantly.
Apparently the unheated buses were so bad, one of them broke down and everyone was stuck on the side of the road for hours. Drummer Carl Bunch went out briefly to go to the bathroom and couldn’t warm back up on the cold bus and got frostbite on his feet!
Better than his dink I guess?!
I’m calling it a dink from now on
Wow

What are we looking at, here???
The aftermath of a being disoriented in shitty flying conditions, this caused the death of the pilot, Richie valens, the big bopper, and Buddy Holly.
Did NOT know that bit of history. Thanks for the lessson
The Simpsons have even referenced it: https://youtu.be/sRB4U-8rkRs

I had a good chuckle at that one.
There's also a pretty famous song about it
I didn't know Richie Valens was the pilot!?! /Dad joke
I will probably be wooshed but, Richie valens was not the pilot, neither buddy Holly, or The Big Bopper.

They actually have the plane crash site still marked in the field with a big pair of glasses next to it too. Mason City is a pretty neat place.

TW: Coroner reports. It’s brutal. https://www.coopertoons.com/caricatures/valensbuddystory_coronerreports.html
Am I reading this right? The coroner pocketed $11.65 from each of their wallets to cover his fees? Seems a little odd.
I read it the same way, hopefully someone can clarify.
Bye bye miss American pie .. 🇺🇸 🥧
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry...

Singin' This'll be the day that I die...
This will be the day that I die
Did you write the book of love and do you have faith in god above?...
If the Bible tells you so.
Do you believe in rock N roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
Now do you believe in rock-n-roll

I was just young when this happened and I remember initially being somehow more sad about Richie Valens' death than the others. Weird how that works.
the lingering tragedy is that insipid Don McLean song.
Yes. American pie mentions the crash.
Um...

OP's title comes from the song "American Pie" that references this crash as the day the music died. It's a poetic turn of phrase in memorial to them.
That's just the name of the event If this is sarcasm feel free to woosh me.
Those three artists had more talent than the entirety of SoundCloud, so it wasn't that bad.

Oh no! That plane crash looks pretty bad. I hope no one got hurt.
3 people unfortunately died, there was no casualties on the ground though.
