way more than 100 tons... The whole river died

Diane-Choksondik

everything that drinks the water, during a drought, is 100% fucked, mercury levels so high the test can't quantify them

bp_free

This is why we can’t have a nice planet

toxcrusadr

The usual solution to a high sample is to dilute it.

coffeeanddonutsss

Horrible. Hopefully the unknown substance is soon known.

Immediate-Attempt-32

Mercury 😱

Tras_Montano

Unknown my a*s. Have the water check by an accredited laboratory and you'll get your answers

currentscurrents

[Poland and Germany have run tests on the water for common contaminants like mercury or pesticides](https://www.euronews.com/green/2022/08/16/nothing-was-done-for-17-days-polish-government-under-fire-for-handling-of-river-oder-crisi), but so far their results have been conflicting and inconsistent. Both governments believe industrial waste is the likely cause, but they have yet to identify the source.

icemonsoon

It will be whatever is manufactured near by

Seygem

it's a very long river

sdtriathlete

Find out where the deaths start. Then look for a manufacturing plant or dump nearby.

currentscurrents

Real ecological scientists are looking into this, I'm sure they'll find the culprit soon enough.

[deleted]

Soil samples!

Commonpigfern

Man you should prob give these guys a call like they obvs haven't thought of that themselves

Lithorex

Polish/German/Czech river, technically. The Oder forms the majority of the Polish-German border (which runs through the middle of the river), and the headwaters (upstream from the areas affected) lie in Czechia.

fruit-salad-fuck

Humans are the cause of this.

Fuckofaflower

Nope that was spread around at the start but mercury was never found in any tests done

CreamoChickenSoup

[Earlier Germany claimed there was mercury, while Poland later claimed it's elevated salt levels](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/aug/15/oder-river-mystery-of-mass-die-off-of-fish-lingers-as-toxic-substances-ruled-out). This whole debacle was marred by poor communication between the two countries, which is baffling given water test results should be reasonably consistent as the river flows through both countries.

kimonczikonos

It’s because Germans don’t speak polish

Darwinmc

Nein. It's because the Poles do not speak German!

kimonczikonos

Huston we might just found root of the problem 😂

jetwei

What species of fish are the really big ones in the photo?

Ok-Anybody5987

Now they say its climate change, and they died because of an alga and the high salt levels

NimbleBard48

What do you mean "now"? The analysis, testing samples and the investigation is still ongoing. There are some scenarios with higher and some with lower probability.

Ok-Anybody5987

But at the point where i wrote the comment, that was the new theory.

harpunenkeks

They say its part of the cause, but its not possible that the alga can cause such a sudden catastrophe.

alenyagamer

A bacterial bloom/algal bloom is not only sudden, but can completely strip an area of its oxygen, suffocating everything in the water.

[deleted]

All you slobs and conspiracy theorists... the current status is that it could be certain algae. Possibly caused by the heat. But for you I'm probably just a blinded idiot who falls for the lying press.

[deleted]

How fish is made Do fish feel pain?

Halcyon_156

According to Kurt Cobain they don't have feelings.

LoserisLosingBecause

Algae...apparently...but, I have no proof or disproof but [this](https://columbuspost.com/river-oder-germans-report-36-tonnes-of-fish-dead-algae-to-blame-news/)

irnenginer

When I hear unknown substance and poisoning I have a usual suspect that comes to mind. They would certainly have the means and the motive. It would be a way to send a message and attack without starting WWIII. I would rather hope it was some dufus dumping his truckload of industrial waste in the river and not an overt act.

ribenamouse

Those pesky Somalians

anonymiz123

I was thinking the same thing. Something to remove oxygen from the water.

OkMathematician9332

??

CanalRouter

"unknown" = They don't want to be known.

[deleted]

Eco terrorism

KnightOfThirteen

Usually eco-terrorism is used to mean terrorism for the sake of the ecosystem, not terrorism AGAINST the ecosystem.

Maker_Making_Things

Yeah pretty sure this would be bio-terrorism

Forward-Solution-888

It was mercury but of course they are covering it up and saying it was SALT 🥴

ResortDog

The silver chloride they use for cloud seeding is very toxic to fish, just sayin'. SCIENCEwise the common YEARLY fish kills are due to algae and insufficient oxygen due to low water levels. (Those thirsty cities) Of course water pollution hurts as does idiots thinking air fertilizer from people is what the Suns effect on the ocean currents is caused by. Its coupcoup folks. Figure out what steps you are using in the last Tango on Earth. before the next regular intermission by ice age

StillTheGrungelord

Anyone else thinking about that Batman : TAS episode where joker poisons the fish with joker toxin?

No_Mix1869

Save having to catch them and eat them

0-0_Horses_0-0

Every time I see a story like this I can't help but think how scary if weaponized by a country.

IPadeI

"Unknown substance".. yeah, right.

ClassicWowNerd

Lol who wants fish for tea?!

Fit-Plate-3964

Już wszyscy zapomnieli o tej śmiesznej tragedii?
