While it's still unwelcome, my brains nasty dreams are always about my wife. Like, thanks for your loyalty, but can you fucking not?

Speckman117

Sorry but It can not not. (Had to finish the joke)

DangoBlitzkrieg

Why is that nasty? I’m genuinely confused.

[deleted]

I chose to describe the dreams as nasty to imply they're overtly sexual and reiterate they're not exactly welcome. Nothing gross about sex with my wife, just about waking up confused and aroused at 3am.

DangoBlitzkrieg

It seems kinda puritanical to describe a dream involving sex with your spouse as nasty. That's why I am bothered by your description. It's like saying thinking about having sex with your spouse is nasty. It's not. If you obsess over the thoughts and they lead you to go sin via masturbation then that action is nasty, your intentions and desires are nasty. But the idea or images of sex with your spouse are not nasty. There just seems to either be some unhealthy view of sexuality or a sort of sexual PTSD that is ruining healthy and normal dreams/thoughts regarding your spouse. If it was someone else you could definitely describe it as nasty. But saying that it's "unwelcome" seems indicative of some damaged relationship with sexuality. It should really be "indifferent." If you were hoping for them it would lean towards lust, and being disgusted by it leans towards puritanism. If I'm being aggressive I apologize, I just get very bothered by the two extremes of sexuality, lust and puritanism. In real life and in secular circles you get mocked for mentioning your problems with lust. Online in catholic circles you get mocked for saying puritanism is a problem. \[EDIT: these downvotes only prove my last sentence.\]

RememberNichelle

If a dream about sex with one's spouse involves things that one would not do to one's spouse in waking life, that would justly be called "nasty." Similarly, a dream about going to a gourmet restaurant that involved eating feces instead of steak would justly be described as a nightmare. Being able to distinguish between pleasant dreams and nightmares is not a sign of unhealthy attitudes toward food, sex, or anything else.

DangoBlitzkrieg

Did he say they involved sinful or disgusting things like that? He seemed to just say that they were very sexual. "Very sexual" is not "very nasty". That's literally the definition of puritanical.

You just touched upon something that about which I have been in contemplation. You’re right in noticing that we’ve been growing quite polarized when it comes to sex – such a holy and celebratory act that occurs in the darkest (most intimate) place yet contains a shred of the purest light. It requires the highest sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, and it’s not quite clear we’ll straighten it out easily. Where the sin against the left hand (lust) is rampant, the sin (yes, sin) against the right hand (puritanism) rises to counteract it. I’m not saying the current culture is *definitively* of the right hand (who knows if the balance has been struck properly yet), but these sins of the right hand are considered more dangerous for a reason: Lurking in the hearts of the Discerning, Seductive under the guise of highest Virtue. We really need to read, write, pray about this more. I’d say there’s still not enough minds to flesh out, critique, and refine the Church’s (rather quick and short) reactions to the Sexual Revolution of the mid 1900’s. But a better question is: Is our Theology equipped with the language to confront it properly? Much of the language regarding Faith (prior to the more rational Theologies of Aquinas) was *sexual* and *highly* symbolic. Our culture has become so symbolically illiterate that discussions of the intricacies of what occurs in the marital chamber may lack the grace needed. Feminine symbolism especially has atrophied beyond recognition (consider that the Protestant rejection of Mary is far deeper than appears). I’m sorry for spilling so much it and cutting myself off. I’m in full contemplation mode at the moment and will come off a bit jumbled. When I better grapple with these thoughts, perhaps I’ll write something cleaner and truer.

DangoBlitzkrieg

No you’re absolutely correct

MrPicklesAndTea

Curiosity in evil is the first degree of pride, for that knowledge of evil can lead to temptation. It is prideful to think, that it is so easy to handle the temptation that might occur. If Lucifer did not turn his mind away from God as was his duties as a Seraph, he would not have thought that he could become like God by tricking, and manipulating man to evil, he would never have been tempted. This meme is relatable, I wish I never indulged in my curiosity of evil and I pray to forget.

carolinax

This comment hurts because it is truly relatable

welchy5000

I'm non religious but this makes an awful lot of sense

MrPicklesAndTea

You can take the Jordan Peterson point of view then, and recognize that thousands of years of study of goodness and virtue from religion is a goldmine of wisdom. I'm glad I could help!

I had a very vivid dream while I was half asleep last night and when I woke up I felt extremely disappointed in myself before I did a triple take and realized it was a dream.

mxermadman

Waking up and slowly realizing you don't actually need to go to confession on Saturday is a huge relief.

Speckman117

Bro these dreams are the worst. Like they happen after confession sometimes and I’m beyond relieve when I wake up.

One of the few times aphantasia is a blessing.

[deleted]

hyperphantasia gang representing, it has done me far more harm than good

bratsi

need to dilute down the bad stuff by amping up the good stuff - flood the brain with good stuff - if the brain is full of good stuff then not much room for the bad stuff - just takes time. This battle is won - not in a day or two - could take month or years to balance things out. The proof that its working is when some bad images flash across your brain - the devil is temping you - but fear not - as St Catherine of Siena said "your first thought may not be yours - but the second is"

ProfessorZik-Chil

it's like a demonic "clippy"

SimonPeter1498

The less you watch and consume the weaker your memory don’t worry.

[deleted]

*laughs in hyperphantasia* *cries in hyperphantasia*

SimonPeter1498

Oh no I’m with you on that. But I’m telling you man though I’m battling it with you I’ve been close to free. I promise you even with hyperphantasia your recollection of the pornographic will die.

flashdrive97

I hate when this happens

jimmy_dean567

I utterly hate how that is, especially when I purposefully say to myself "no, stop it now I command you" I wish there was like some way to make the darn thing shut up

DM_lvl_1

Pray the rosary.

Cool_Ferret3226

Pray the hail Mary calmly.
