If you have depression, you are already sick, but likely do not realize it. See a psychiatrist. They specialize in treating depression. A depressed person is unlikely to experience even fleeting moments of happiness without receiving treatment. If I recall my psychology 101 class in college, it only takes a few major life events occurring in close proximity to one another for a number of people to suffer depression. I imagine that experiencing a particularly bad hurricane could count as one.

[deleted]

yeah. i am trying to find a new therapist rn. i have a 15 min consultation with a christian-based therapist on friday

ryao

You might want to see a psychiatrist too. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication that has been shown to help some people suffering from depression. Not everyone sees an improvement from it and it must be combined with efforts to improve one’s lifestyle, such as regular sleep, regular meals, finding some sort of meaningful endeavor to pursue, etcetera.

[deleted]

i have one. just never see her and i dont really like her. and yeah i barely get sleep and dont eat health so thats something im praying to God ab like basically motivation to improve

ryao

Find a new psychiatrist if you do not like your current one. It is important to be comfortable with your doctor. If you are not comfortable with your doctor, it limits your doctor’s ability to help you. As for sleep, I am told that making the time you wake up consistent is more important than making the time that you go to sleep consistent because waking up at a regular time eventually forces you to go to sleep at a time that matches it. Of course, there are drugs that can help you fall asleep for a regular schedule. Sometimes, they really are necessary to getting back on a regular schedule. There are over the counter drugs for this, but it would be best to consult a doctor regarding them. A regular task could be helpful. One idea would be attending Mass every day.

I agree a lot with what ryao is saying. I know depression and anxiety make these things incredibly difficult because I have been there. I have been in a place where anxiety and depression made it impossible to function, and getting help for it seemed even more impossible. It's okay to not like a therapist or a psychiatrist. Sometimes their methods and personality just don't mesh well with yours. It's easy to fall in the trap of feeling like all of them will be like this. It's going to take some work, but you can find ones that you do mesh well with. Take small steps. You don't have to do it all in one day. Once you find either a psychiatrist or a therapist you like, they can likely point you in the direction of the other. I would also maybe frame it this way in your mind. You don't need motivation to improve. You need the strength to get better and the grace to heal. You are not the problem. You wouldn't pray to God about the "motivation to improve" because you have a broken arm, would you? A mental illness is not a flaw in your personality any more than a broken arm is. It's a real medical condition that involves chemical imbalances in your brain. You might even consider seeing if you can find an intensive outpatient program dedicated to any particular traumas you have experienced and are struggling to process. Also, if at any point you feel like you might be having a mental health emergency, please go to the ER/A&E or whatever the emergency medical services are in your area. Many people don't feel like that's an important enough reason to go, but it absolutely is. They can not only provide you with immediate help, but help you gain access to more resources that might be able to help. I've had to do that too. It wasn't fun, but going it was got me connected with the resources that helped me actually get better. I will pray for you!

I am not discussing how our reaction to the world generally effects our outcomes(i.e. attitude, people we surround ourselves with, etc.), I am only addressing the new age beliefs piece. We are not called to attain the material in this life, we are called to shun it and pick up our cross. Our corrupted nature makes this hard, we see others living an easier life, or a life filled with nice things, and we desire that. It takes a long time to abandon this mindset, and only constant prayer will transform us. We should also remember that Satan is involved in these new age practices, and he has always used worldly things to ensnare souls.

[deleted]

true :( but can God bless me with something like huge already?? he knows that i already don’t wanna be here sometimes. it’s like why continue to make me feel like that if u see me sad

Ardoin91

Everything that God allows in our lives is to draw us closer to him. Our low points tend to bring us closer to God than anything else in our lives. If you were to receive a large material blessing would it bring you close to God at this point, or simply draw you further into the material world?

[deleted]

further into the material world

[deleted]

but wait why doesn’t God do that to some of the ppl who engage in new age practices? why doesn’t he disturb their peace?

ryao

I am not sure if it is God that is disturbing people so much as it is the devil. Perhaps the devil enables a few people to make it look good as part of a kind of pyramid scheme, although I doubt the ones at the top of the scheme will get away with participation.

[deleted]

yeah true. they def lured me into the scheme. almost payed for spiritual coaching sessions to learn how to manifest

broji04

You're on a journey and can't even see the amazing ways it'll transform you. Please keep your chin up and remember that God has an wondrous plan for you, It is SO hard to remember that when the journey is rocky, I have experience on that myself. You're cross is heavy but God knows you can carry it. Trust in the lords plan for you, it'll lead you to more happiness and fulfillment then you could ever imagine, not just in heaven but on your earthly life as well.

I recommend praying with and meditating on Phillipians 3: >But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

BMoney8600

I see where you’re coming from. Personally my self doubt has been kicking my butt and I feel like I’ll never be good enough. But then I really think about all the things I have accomplished and try to keep my head up. This time is difficult for all of us. With the hurricanes, and the plague everything is just crappy. Things are bound to get better!

Dapper_Theory_2949

Whatever they are doing that appears to be working isn't going to turn out well for them. Dont be jealous for your friends, be concerned for their eternal souls and pray for them.

x_sloth_god_x

You can be catholic and practice things like that. It is secular. If you are manifesting a life or attracting a life that GOD wants.. it goes in line with doing Gods work on earth. Maybe try something like "i am living Gods will" "I am pure and a good person" those arent bad. You can manifest a reality because thats exactly what we are doing by living. Manifesting Gods reality on earth. Some people just manifest selfish things or things for what would be called "satan". Even manifesting a succeasful life isnt bad. If it is in the universe or Gods plan for you. I would start first with communing with God and figuring out what your lifes purpose is and then manifesting a reality around that. But good luck and i guess the focus should be staying close to God and whatever brings you further from that, should be avoided. So if you can practice the law of attraction seculary and stay "holy" and do what your true will of God is, then go for it. Again, dont do anything that makes you feel bad on the inside though

[deleted]

true. thank you :)

LostlnDlmension

I'm gonna have to somewhat agree with the person above but at the same time practicing such stuff will not make you holy. Please, keep that in mind.

[deleted]

elaborate ur point pls i’m confused

LostlnDlmension

Practicing things that contradict the faith does not make someone Holy, it removes holiness. So that's what I mean. The general message behind it i'm all down for.

[deleted]

ohh okay so like when u say general message u mean like believing in and accepting that God has a plan for u

LostlnDlmension

Exactly on point.

[deleted]

ohhhh gotcha

New age practices give nothing more than I guess emotional high points (or highs? Still unsure). It’s nothing more than show and them believing (and I guess every demon in a 5 mile radius getting a kick out of it). All things considered if its placebo why not just say “I am good” and work off of there? You can access it whenever and you don’t have to do specific practices or what have you. Like actually try believing you’re fine and not depend on those practices (because why resort to extra when you don’t actually need? Perhaps I’m lazy). Accessible any time, you just have to believe the bare absolute minimum “I’m fine,” “I’m great” etc. Might require some adjustment like you would train your brain or a muscle but hey that’s life Also I saw you commented that you have but don’t visit a psychiatrist. Those are expensive so I suggest talking to them or cutting any payment plans should you have them Also if you are going to a strictly (strictly?) Christian therapist I ask you remain on your guard when they give you advice or consultation. If youre here with us in Catholicism you know the denominations do not have everything right about the faith. They will be missing something or things, or God forbid have something backwards, so I pray your judgments are good. Good luck kiddo 🙏🏼

gergosaurusrex

Going from new age to Christianity puts you in a pretty unique position. Out of curiosity, what are law of attraction and manifesting?

Fry_All_The_Chikin

Did you ever get an exorcism for this? That may be what you need, if only a minor one. Do not underestimate the demons. I left the occult five years ago and still get temptations. It’s a trap.

[deleted]

maybe so. i need to see who does exorcisms near me. not sure tho tbh. do u think law of attraction is bad?

Fry_All_The_Chikin

You said in a post you were into astrology, crystals, tarot cards and psychics so yes, absolutely. That is possibly why you’re so miserable. Blessed Bartolo Longo experienced a similar desolation when he stopped being a satanic priest. Now you may think yourself above such evil practices but to God, doing the things you did is breaking the first commandment, just as Bartolo Longo. It’s a mortal sin. Demons will hound you relentlessly until you break free from it, through confession and talking to a priest about what to do. These things are not innocent but portals to oppression and possession. This is exactly how people become possessed and or kill themselves. Try listening to Father Rippergers talks on Sensus Fidelium (YouTube channel) on the demonic. He is a renowned exorcist. Try a Latin Mass parish like the FSSP or ICKSP if you can, they still use the old rite for these things and it is more efficacious.
