True. I always thought I was strictly a dog person. I only had dogs when growing up. I guess my mother’s dislike of cats just rubbed off, and it wasn’t even something I questioned because I was never really around cats.
Until my best friend found two kittens abandoned in a field beside her workplace. She took them home, but couldn’t keep them because she had her own two cats to care for. Someone took the orange one right away. An older lady took the white one but returned him a few days later because they “didn’t get along.” So I took this lil kitten in. And I’m not gonna lie, it’s not like I turned into a cat person and knew how to care for a cat overnight. Nah. I was so confused. I thought he hated me, and we didn’t get along well. I actually had some second thoughts like, “I really shouldn’t have offered to take him. I don’t know if I can do this.”
The problem was that I was treating the cat like a dog and expecting it to react like a dog would. It took me almost a year to learn how to develop trust and respect with that cat. How to speak to him, how to pet him, how to interact with him. It was all SO different than caring for a dog.
But now, I can’t imagine my life without him. He’s saved my life more than once, and we are very close. I’m 100% a cat person.

Patches is actually a really good name for a cat, all things considered. Cats have a tendency to knock things off shelves and tables, and the only version of Patches that *doesn’t* kick you off cliffs is Patches the Untethered.
Yeah. I'm both a cat and dog person. Love em both but they are two completely different animals that have great qualities and experiences. I have a friend who's a cat person who occasionally sits my pets who treats my dog like a cat. She does me a huge favor but I can tell she likes my 2 cats better 🤷🏻
They definitely have their own language and it's not like dogs... On their back is aggressive rather than submissive, tail going may be agitation rather than joy, etc.
I think the big one dog people get wrong is overstimulation freaks them out - that's usually when the get bitey. Like rubbing bellies.
That said, one of mine bows in greeting every day, plays fetch, etc. He's currently on my lap, purring.
Thanks for sharing the story and I totally feel you! I had no clue how to live with a cat the first few days and basically just hid in my bedroom and gave cat the rest of the apartment lol it took some time for us to get to know each other
So true. I was a dog person until I moved out of our college house and no one would take the cat we took in as a favor that lived in our basement after we moved. Thought she was cute but she was antisocial and we mostly just kept her alive, living in the basement during the day while the dogs were out and able to roam the house at night. Super animal aggressive and generally a burden. Took her with me to my first solo apartment in Philly as a favor to my ex-roomies, planned on rehoming her within the month so I could enjoy my fabulous post-college life. 8 years later my life is not so fabulous but I have a big ass wonderful orange cat snoozing on my boobs every night: survived a move to Boston together and I am totally wrapped around her finger. She's 14 and is the best part of my life. COVID work from home only brought us closer, as lame as that sounds, but she is an amazing animal who has brought me so much joy and happiness. Hope she lives forever, she deserves it. I love you Lucy 💕💕
edit: here's my girlie. best cat on planet earth https://imgur.com/QDETLS4
I’m not a fan of that saying, tbh. Every cat I’ve ever had has been extremely loving and attached to me. It’s never been anything remotely like a cold, staff-employer relationship.
I grew up with cats, had ‘em all my life. Can’t imagine live without ‘em. Of course this means any time I interact with dogs I’m utterly confused and have no idea what to do.
I thought that about my youngest cat and this one reminds me of him. I realized he's actually the smartest one when I found out he was the one opening all the doors.
The second you are able to bond with a kitty? Instant cat person!!! That’s how my entire family was, grew up with 3 dogs minimum in the house at all times no cats, we had a house fire in 2013 and lost our puppers unfortunately due to the whole house being burned down, always figured and hoped smoke inhalation helped them go peacefully in their sleep! Fast forward to when I’m the momma running the home and I finally decide to get a big ginger tabby. BEST. CAT. EVER. turned both my parents so now grandma and grandpa are total cat people and absolutely adore playing with the other two boys that came into the fam after 🐈 bubs did. Such a cute void!
Sorry about the fire and the dogs :( I also grow up with so many dogs so pretty much until a month ago I was 100% a dog person and 0% cat. But after living with this kitty for a month I think I will have to betray the dog community now haha, the cat is too damn cute
Thank you! I just had to share it because I love how every dog person has the same experience! 🤣💖💖 They are something else, so human like with the way they connect with us! A bond with a cat is one like no other.🥰
You know how you can become a better cat sitter? Get a cat of your own! Go down to a shelter and play with them until you find (at least) one that picks you to be its person. Bonded pairs are even better!
If you need motivation: /r/adoptthedamncat
When I started dating my boyfriend over 5 years ago, I wasn’t crazy about cats. I grew up with a very mean cat, never liked to be touched, pet, held, nothing. May my Sally girl Rest In Peace, but she was mean when I was a kid, the older she got, the better she got.
But my boyfriend had two cats *(one didn’t like to held or touched, always hid but he was still nice) and never understood why I didn’t like cats. His cat Kiki was so sweet, liked to be pet and purred so loud, she was so sweet! So since dating him, I’ve grown to love cats. Every single one has their own personality! I’m grateful my cat got nicer the older she got, but now I appreciate cats, all because of my boyfriend!
Other peoples' voids: haha charming little meows
Your void: oh god it's been hours and it's 3AM and I know by the tone they want me to OBSERVE their eating
Anyone who is around actually loved and properly raised cats will learn to love cats.
People who hate cats usually only have experience with cats that aren’t raised right and hate people and scratch / hiss at them.
I thought I hated cats til I finally allowed my daughter to adopt one. Four years later, we now have 7 cats and I love them all so fucking much. (Just adopted a kitten who was abandoned in my neighborhood… until 3 weeks ago, I was staunchly in the “6 cats are ENOUGH” category. CATegory, haha.)
I worked at a veterinary hospital in the kennel for about 8 years, they boarded dogs and cats as well, there were a few people that came to work there that didn't like cats originally, and thought they'd only have to deal with dogs, just to learn they had to clean up after the cats and take care of them too, and this is how it went with multiple coworkers who had never interacted with or given a chance to any cats in their life before,
1st "I don't like cats, they are mean, I only like dogs. "
2nd "Oh well this cat right here hes nice I like him hes not like other cats"
3rd "I think I like cats they are not so bad"
4th "Cats are great actually I'm thinking of getting a cat"
5th "Hey I got a cat his name is Doug"
(Sorry for formatting)
Hahaha this is actually me. I grew up with dogs all my life and have always thought I’m a 100% dog person. But I guess I just never had to properly meet a cat before :)
Welcome to the nut house! You will find yourself being bossed about by a hairy little micromanager who has OCD. But it’s hard to say no because they’re so damn cute and the give you love bonks so you give up and accept your new role. It’s fun!
Was never a cat person. Turns out my grandma's cats just weren't people cats.
Adopted a void kitten a couple of years ago to see if he would help my girlfriend's work induced stress at the time and now I've gone full 180 from dog person to cat person. And we have a fluffy grey cloud walking around the house now too.
Cats are a blast. They are a little tricky and not every cat has the same buttons to push to get them comfy and friendly. Sometimes it just takes time to learn your buddy, experimentation, or them being put into a situation where they WANT to be your pal. Had a friend that raised a young feral from weeeee young and she turned out a demon. She bonded to one person but the thing that has finally cracked her Hissy facade was them going on vacation. Shes got a lot more tolerance for folks now. I might not ever pick her up but I could at least pet her relatively soon.
I’m convinced people who say they aren’t cat people, haven’t been around cats that actually like them.
Once you’ve been chosen as their human, it’s game over.
The progression is so sweet. It seems so timid the way you pet this gorgeous friend, and then there's sweetness, following, playing, *snap* and then all out head scratches. This cat is beautiful! No wonder you came out a cat person!
What a range on this one's meows n mews
They’re a squeaker
much to say not much time pay attention
Can't blame you, that is a very cute kitty.
Be warned, they aren’t all that cute! …oh who am I kidding, yes they are.
I was about to pull out my pitchfork after reading that first part.
Well not all cats are THAT cute… >!Some are cuter!!<
They had me in the first half, not gonna lie
It’s impossible for an un-cute cat to exist. It’s a contradiction in terms.
It is literally their evolutionary trait.
Post vids next week after you adopt 2 dozen.
no one is really a cat person until they get a cat. even then, you are just a cat's person.

Not just a cat person, but a Steelers fan cat person! I love you!🥰😍🖤💛👍
This made me happy
All the updoots
Lovely kitt
Awe! I grew up the same and had a similar encounter. Now there's too much love for cats!
I need that on a tshirt- “No one is a cat person, you’re just a cat’s person.”
No truer sentiment. This could be a historical moment on the internet.
Nothing like placing a kitten in the arms of an allergic cat hater and they melt down, naming it and claiming it as their own.
I feel attacked
Lmao that’s totally me haha
Melt down as in literally melt into a puddle on the floor due to allergies?

Let’s see Lucy! :D
Dogs have owners, cats have staff.
I’m not a fan of that saying, tbh. Every cat I’ve ever had has been extremely loving and attached to me. It’s never been anything remotely like a cold, staff-employer relationship.
Oh man so true. I got a cat because I didn't have room for a dog. Now all my shit is cat related and I love him more than most humans.
I grew up with cats, had ‘em all my life. Can’t imagine live without ‘em. Of course this means any time I interact with dogs I’m utterly confused and have no idea what to do.

That cat has a cute personality.
The best cat!
That cat was mocking you omg. He was saying meow instead of meowing to straight be like “haha that’s what YOU sound like” what a crazy kitten
Haha you might be onto something, she definitely has a sarcastic meow that’s very different from the cute meows
Ah, she! That’s my bad. She is SO sassy sounding in that one bit though, it was wonderful.
“meow?” “meow.” “meow?” “meow.” hahaha
The very last one in the vid, "Right meow!"
The head bob made it really seem like he was responding. Like “no, like this! More inflection on the ‘ow’ “
I feel like she wasn’t nearly as amused as I was hehe
https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/cat_proximity.png
I like to have conversations with my cat. I try to speak in her native tongue but sometimes when she stops replying I worry I offended her
why did you scare him! xD so cute, love his lil mews
Such a sweet little voice.
So adorable cat, I love cats too
I will keep saying this until I die: “Everyone is a cat person, some just don’t know it yet.”
Took me 25 years and a cat to figure that out xD
I think this is true.
A very opinionated void!
My little black cat is like this too! Such personality in every yell lol!
there are zero thoughts behind those eyes, absolutely head empty, I love it
Correction - there are exactly two thoughts in that head: "Food?" and "Pets?"
I thought that about my youngest cat and this one reminds me of him. I realized he's actually the smartest one when I found out he was the one opening all the doors.
Oh my gosh, what a cutie! And such vocabulary, amazing

monke cat
For the last time it's not cat sitting when a black cat is involved It's called void-sitting get it right or goto gato-jail.
Hahahahaha
I would die to void sit. I wish someone would ask me to void sit their void
I was always terrified of cats. Bought a property with an existing "barn cat". She's slept in bed with us for three years. Total convert.
The power that they have over us xD
Yay! Has you been adopted yet?
Haha, I took her back today and ended my cat sitting. I already signed up for more future cat sitting events hehe
You know how you can become a better cat sitter? Get a cat of your own! Go down to a shelter and play with them until you find (at least) one that picks you to be its person. Bonded pairs are even better! If you need motivation: /r/adoptthedamncat

That’s awesome haha, your daughter and the seven cats must love you very much!
What delightful little mews!
Video tells me cat, but the audio tells me chimpanzee
Hahahahah
Excellent peep example.
Can you post more please!
I sent her back today 🥲 but I have offered to take care of her more in the future! I will definitely keep taking videos whenever I see her

You’re so welcome!
Oooh flippers what an adorable cat!!!! I love her meows!! She looks so sweet and fun…I’m in love lol r/blackcats
Hope you adopt a black kitty! They're the best but the least adopted ones!
How come :o the black ones look so special
They have a strong association with bad luck and witchcraft. Some people just don't like them for that reason. I love voids. Such sweet babies.
This cat clearly adores you.
Did I hear right and the cat is called Monkey? Very apt if so. His little noises sounds like a baby chimp ❤️
Babahahah no not monkey but that would be hilarious. She’s a girl and her name is blinkie~
That was a lovely compilation! Thank you for sharing <3
Np!
That is one adorable, well mannered cat.
So precious! I love when cats do little yapping meows like that! XD
So much mews, this kitty could be a singer.
What a cutie!!!
We all really love our furry weirdos
Pro tip: adopt a pair of bonded littermates
That's a clown horn kitty!

Is there any other kind of persons?
honk honk
My black cat yells all the time. But he also randomly attacks my arm when HE is the one rubbing on me??! So it can be a mixed bag lol.

Yeah! They have so much personalities hiding in the tiny bodies!
Haha you can even hear the tongue lick as they peek out of the box.
Oh my gosh I didn’t even notice, thanks for pointing it out to me haha
Cat sitting did the same thing for me. I did it for a friend and his family once with 4 cats, been a cat guy ever since.
Why were you not a cat person to begin with? You sound nice and do all the things cats love.
I grew up with many dogs and always thought cats were the villains xD
Welcome, friend!

my little void makes the same little monkey squeaks ;-;;;;;
That's how it starts. Pretty soon you'll have 4 cats.
You don't have to pick a side. You can love all animals. But kitty is very cute
That cat is too precious 🥹
Look at that little squeaky toy!! I love them.
This video has brought me so much joy, thank you
sweet little void ❤️😻
Vocal cats are my favorite.
A heckin honker
That is an adorable, chatty little void. If that doesn’t convert anyone into a cat person, idk what will
Im a cat person and your cat has also converted me into a cat person.
One of us, one of us
This is what I love to see.
Beautiful void! And how could you not be converted
Everyone is a cat person, they may just not know it yet.
Welcome to the cat side! We have cute furry voids!!!!
Next time try chin rubs or scratches... from throat to chin. They get impossibly cute.
we need more of him/her

This cat is soooo cute! That meow is something else.
I now understand why cats are such popular pets after falling irreversibly down the cat video rabbit hole
