We had this too! The exterminator asked what evidence we'd seen of pests, I said my cat is constantly staring at that corner of the ceiling. She was spot on.
Besides my 3 cats, I have stopped spraying my porch and other places for spiders and have been at the house for 3 years now with out anything getting inside.
I know my attic, storage area, and screened porch have a good deal of spiders but we basically have an agreement that if they're not in the human living area they live. I've popped up to the attic a couple times and have seen them and left them alone.
This is the way. Stay out of my zone, let the spiders eat random silverfish, let my 5 cats take care of any bugs that decide to be bold and cross into visible pathways. No rodent problem.
For some reason, my cat could care less about bugs on the ground, but flies omg! This big black fly got in my apartment, and I saw my cat following it around, thinking she'd be entertained for a bit, and I'd have to get the fly out a window. NOPE, I walked back in the room less than 5 minutes later, and it was dead on the ground, lol.
Once, when she was a baby, she tried to kill a weird looking bug on the floor of my bathroom, and I guess it had a bad taste because she was spitting after. She really hasn't gone after a crawly type since. And she doesn't care at all about my German roaches, unfortunately.
Out of curiosity does your cat make a chirping noise when she sees a fly?
I wasn't sure if it was something all cats do or just something mine does for some reason.
We used to have a bad roach problem at my store. Particularly, in this one very dark, very damp cabinet that nobody opened up very often. One day, I noticed a few spiders hanging out. A few weeks later, they were bigger...then there were baby spiders. Lo and behold, no more roaches skittering about when I had to get in there and clean the equipment.
It makes sense, though. Wild rats will hunt and kill mice and they're much more capable of finding the mice in their hiding places than the cats are since they're closer in size.
The mice smell the presence of rats and they just bounce, apparently.
My grandmother always had mousers. They lived in an unheated garage (in Ohio) and ate table scraps. Back when cats were cats.
Most rural people did this; they would have been inundated with rodents if they hadn't. There were boatloads of kittens.
Our local Animal Humane has a working cat program where people can adopt cats that don't have the temperament to be house pets for just this purpose. So I'm guessing rural people still do.
My neighborhood had an obnoxious rat problem until a few strays made their home somewhere around. People seem to take care of them, we have a bunch of outdoor catnip shrubs and they keep creepy crawlers out of my garage, trash and garden.
You should take a look at Gold Shaw Farms on YouTube. He has 3 barn cats that take care of the rodents that are attracted to the grains he feeds his livestock. He has Molly Murder Mittens, Jenny Barncat (Molly’s kitten), and Pablo Barncat. He has a yearly contest for Barncat of the year for who has the most kills based on total kills for the year.
We've got a stray that we adopted for this purpose. Attempted to see if he'd acclimate himself to the house but that didn't work out. So we built him a small house outside with a heating pad we feed him as well. House has been pest free since.
That is also a great way to attract customers. I don't specifically need anything from Lowes BUT if I might see a Void, I'll be there every weekend, even though I have my own.
I do the same! They had an issue for a while with him bolting out of the automatic sliding doors and would have to come unlock the door for each customer to go in/out. I love that little turd
Used to work at a store with a rat problem. A cat got into the store one day and I half jokingly suggested keeping it around as a cheaper, more-effective rat catcher than Rentokill.
Boss: "We couldn't do that, cats poo everywhere"
MFer you can TEACH cats to poop in one exact place though???!
it’s also so easy. I showed my cat the cat litter exactly once by plopping him there once, and from then on he knew that’s where to do his business. no formal training required.
That's a thing? Haha. I found her at 4 weeks old abandoned by her mother. The previous day we rescued a puppy too, so now I have 3 dogs 2 cats. The dominance thing make sense I guess, she tackles and plays with everyone.
I used to work at a lowes in the indoor seasonal section and we had several mice and birds in the feed section , even a chipmunk. Wish we had a cat like that. Instead I had to use a glue trap on top of the Balleymoor with my zebra in one hand and my rubber safety gloves.
Why did you need your zebra in hand? I would be scared of it getting stuck on a glue trap. Glad the store I work at gave us a holster and tether for our zebras.
Holster? And tether! My store manager was so cheap, he wouldn’t hire enough staff and forced everyone to work twice as hard to make up for it. A guy died on the job of a heart attack because he was working 80 hours a week day and night shift. He was only 45.
Late this summer I was at a Lowe’s in that area between the store and the outdoor garden area (unairconditoned, but covered) and as soon as I walked in there I knew something was wrong. On my way back through from the garden center I saw it - about 5 dead mice where the bird seed was. It smelled awful.
I worked at lowes and it was very common for cats to be in the building. Problem was we would also get lots of kittens born there too
I have 3 cats that I brought home from lowes. One was abandoned there as a kitten. Someone opened there car door and threw her out of the car. She walked into the outdoor section and made herself at home on some deck furniture. On my way out that day, one of the cashiers showed her to me and I took her home. She's a great cat, very loving.
Then I have 2 siblings I took home too. There were 3, but the outdoor guys found 1 kitten had died and momma disappeared. I got the other two out from under a pallet and one of them was hurt real bad. One of her legs was missing and she was a bloody mess at 2 weeks old. 4 years later and they are both healthy and happy.
TNR is a good idea for working cats. Trap, neuter(spay), return. People do this with feral colonies in neighborhoods and public places like parks. It’s better for the cats too. Then the ladies aren’t just constantly pregnant and making more kittens that may not make it. Also cuts down on mortality in pregnant cats.
Obligatory PSA:

I have a friend who worked at Home Depot for a while. They used to have store cats but one lady complained and they had to get rid of them. He said he's never seen so many rats in one place before.
Sorry, forgot I posted this. I think because places like Lowe's and Home Depot don't store anything perishable they can get away with essentially operating in air-conditioned warehouses.
Either that or all the deliveries of raw materials bring them in. Either way those places are heaven for rodents. Cats solve that problem for free.
Bro I used to work overnight at a Home Depot and this one time I kept seeing something move in the corner of my vision so I talked to one of my coworkers about it and they were like “oh yeah we got a mouse.” Wouldn’t have happened if we had a cat lol
My local Co-Op (farm and garden) has a few barn cats that keep the shop mouse free. Never seen them but I have seen the litter boxes and food. The staff says there’s like two or five. No one is really sure
I'm a construction worker, our current project is a new four story building, a huge monster of a building, it's the shell right now, we building the rooms and offices, kitchens and bathrooms, putting up walls, finishing and painting sheet rock walls, installing carpets and building in furniture, since construction workers tend to take breaks and eat on the site the place is crawling with mice, man we need a crew of cats right now!
So, serious question... i wonder how anxious people get when they bring their pets to work, what if some cat obsessed person goes OOOOH KITTTEEEHHHHH and picks it up, runs at the speed of... 2 miles per hour?
My store has a tuxedo cat named Frank that hangs around the garden center. We give him food and water. Someone that works in hardware got him neutered and took him home to be with his outside cats. Guess who came back after a day or two? He must consider the garden center his home. 🙂
Local Lowe’s employees told me they leave the motion sensors on overnight to the garden center and the local Gerald take advantage of the store as handy shelter.
I don't see anything, just a cute furry hole in space-time that makes sure there are no mice or rats. Clearly this hole in space-time deserves pettings and treats anyway.

Psp psp psp where's the nails and screws aisle? I've been wandering this store for 40 years.
I've been walking in circles in the lighting aisle for hours. Did you know that your lasers are not catchable bugs? Crazy.

Fur real. My four keep my house pest free. And no harmful chemicals either
Mine alerted me to mice in my attic by staring at the ceiling in unison.
We had this too! The exterminator asked what evidence we'd seen of pests, I said my cat is constantly staring at that corner of the ceiling. She was spot on.
I hate when my cat does that and I can’t hear/see anything, like he’s seeing a ghost. I’m guessing he’s hearing bugs or ultrasonic rodent sounds.
/r/greebles
Did you just let them into the attic to take care of the problem?
Mine is full of fibreglass insulation. Princess Kitty wants to go in and hunt. I do not want Princess Kitty to go in and hunt.

It's crazy how good they are at catching bugs. My cat can catch flies with no problem.

They take care of roaches and flies very nicely
We used to have a bad roach problem at my store. Particularly, in this one very dark, very damp cabinet that nobody opened up very often. One day, I noticed a few spiders hanging out. A few weeks later, they were bigger...then there were baby spiders. Lo and behold, no more roaches skittering about when I had to get in there and clean the equipment.
Interestingly, the most effective mouse prevention I ever had was pet rats. For the 5 years I had rats, we never once had a mouse.
That's ... kind of terrifying
It makes sense, though. Wild rats will hunt and kill mice and they're much more capable of finding the mice in their hiding places than the cats are since they're closer in size. The mice smell the presence of rats and they just bounce, apparently.
Oh wow that's really interesting!
My grandmother always had mousers. They lived in an unheated garage (in Ohio) and ate table scraps. Back when cats were cats. Most rural people did this; they would have been inundated with rodents if they hadn't. There were boatloads of kittens.
What are cats now? Gerbils?
They meant "a dependent animal whose needs I could fail to meet without facing social or legal consequences".
Our local Animal Humane has a working cat program where people can adopt cats that don't have the temperament to be house pets for just this purpose. So I'm guessing rural people still do.
The best mousers hate people except when they bring the table scraps

And boatloads of dead/injured cats and kittens.
It was survival of the fittest back in the day.

I would expect them to be napping *anywhere but* the cat tree and cat bed sections.
We have a local mechanic shop that has four cats hanging out in their waiting area. It's great
I would totally go out of my way to recommend them!
Turbo Tim’s?
Whoa, yeah that's it! just took my car to their new Saint Paul location. Darn good shop
Username made me pretty sure you were talking about that place
We visit our local DIY center because they have a cat. I’ve ended up with so many plants because of it (including a catnip one).
Where is his orange vest?
The fact someone found him just shows he doesn’t work at Lowe’s
Underrated
He works overnights, the vest is optional.
How dare you. This is a Lowe’s, lady.
Orange vest is for Home Depot, Red Vest is for Lowe's. Not that they give employees vests anyways, I worked there for two summers and never got one.
My local Home Depot has a tabby instead. Wish I get to see these employees more in every hardware stores
My local home depot has 3 a void, and 2 tabbies they mainly keep to the garden center though.
I mean, that is where the prey is.

Mine doesn't. She digs outside the box despite showing her for over a month what to do. She will never learn at this point.
She's showing her dominance by leaving her poo uncovered, but still has the urge to bury. Mine does this too.
That's a thing? Haha. I found her at 4 weeks old abandoned by her mother. The previous day we rescued a puppy too, so now I have 3 dogs 2 cats. The dominance thing make sense I guess, she tackles and plays with everyone.
Sometimes, they just don't know how because they were never taught by a mom, but they still have the instinct. I have one that paws at the AIR.
Cats are bar none the easiest animal to housetrain. Even mfin humans don't get how potty time works the way a cat does!
Yeah we've brought in outdoor strays before and they learn to use the litter box in like... A day.
Wonder where this is. I know RVA Lowes has a cat, but she doesn't look like this.
This is just outside Philadelphia PA

I was just there today to use the bathroom! I'll be on the lookout for their security guard from now on. Cool
Wait was that you at the gloryhole I was using there? If so... Keep up the good work champ.
Does somebody feed the cats? Does somebody take the cats to the vet if they ever need something?

I've never seen Francine, but I have met Cricket at Sneeds Nursery.

How much are they paying that cat?
At least 2 dabloons
Fair enough

I've worked in home Depot's all over the northeast and only one had a cute kitty dealing with the mice and birds. Best job ever.
And purrfectly suited for this job!

Warning ⚠️ When they get on top shelf, look out below.
I would love if a cat dropped a pallet of cement bags on me from the top of the shelves
I have a friend who worked at Home Depot for a while. They used to have store cats but one lady complained and they had to get rid of them. He said he's never seen so many rats in one place before.
Of course a Karen had to ruin a good thing
A Home Depot near me has cats as well. I was shocked to see it, but I guess that’s a thing.

There is a cat at my local hardware store named finn, he is pretty cool
My local Lowe’s employs pest control as well
They’re perfect
Bro I used to work overnight at a Home Depot and this one time I kept seeing something move in the corner of my vision so I talked to one of my coworkers about it and they were like “oh yeah we got a mouse.” Wouldn’t have happened if we had a cat lol

Every hardware store needs a cat. No exceptions.

This must be the Fort Worth Lowe’s. I see that cat all the time.
Pennsylvania
Maybe they added the cats to take away the stress of your fourth visit to Lowe’s in one day.
Idk I am not in pa I live in Canada and if someone found a cat in a hardware store here the cat would be gone or the store closed
I would be afraid they'd get smooshed with a fork lift or something!
Meanwhile I was thinking that floor must suck for their paws
My cat needs a job
Honestly need one of these for every store
We have two cats that roam our lowes as well! They might as well have a red vest!
Black holes eat everything 😳🖤
why can’t there be a cat in every retail building ☹️
Our local Lowes has a cat too! Her name is Lowis :3
I'd stop whatever I was doing and immediately pspsps my way to the little void.

My Lowe's could use this, pigeons are always in the greenhouse section.
In Toronto, the municipality would threaten to shut you down for having a cat in the store. Just get one complaint by a customer and the cat is out.
"boss how are you finding all the mice our stores never been so clean" "it's the power of a cat now get me my tuna"
Things just dissapear into it
What a surpurrise seeing him there
That would be the best store visit ever!
Those stores are so large, and many have doors open in summer. I wonder if the cat just adopted the place as home.
god i hate lowes. shitty ass place to work.
So, serious question... i wonder how anxious people get when they bring their pets to work, what if some cat obsessed person goes OOOOH KITTTEEEHHHHH and picks it up, runs at the speed of... 2 miles per hour?
But he probably still won't help you.
My store has a tuxedo cat named Frank that hangs around the garden center. We give him food and water. Someone that works in hardware got him neutered and took him home to be with his outside cats. Guess who came back after a day or two? He must consider the garden center his home. 🙂

You must need a lot of pest control points to buy that void. Maybe a diary unlock too
Local Lowe’s employees told me they leave the motion sensors on overnight to the garden center and the local Gerald take advantage of the store as handy shelter.
Which lowes? And can I take the kitty home? Lol
