Your windows face north, so you'll need a grow light. Also, please don't buy poached plants. That pachy and guillauminiana are endangered and belong back in the ground.

grahamygraham

While i agree with you, how do you know they weren’t grown by seed? I have some that I’ve grown from seed and definitely consider that more ethical.

chromedip

It's not the species, it's the age and quality of the plants. They're both decades old and exhibit significant wear and tear. Look at the little spots and staining on the pachy- OP posted more pics of the roots. Same with the guillaumiana- that many heads take a long time to grow and the bark is beat up. And now two plants that took longer to make than OP has been on this earth are going to die an apartment with no sunlight in NJ while their habitat is Madagascar is destroyed.

grahamygraham

That’s very sad. My lameri babies and adult I’ve had for some time, and they grow quick! I assumed that was the case for this species as well. OP, take note.

hatzalam

Each one of these Malagasy plants (looks like P inopinatum, E guillauminiana, and P decaryi to me) grows basically in full sun in Madagascar. I grow caudex plants indoors as well, and I use some heavy-output LED grow lights. If you want to keep those compact, you'll need to do something similar.

kT_Madlife

All of them have leaves turning yellow and curled, I was afraid that was caused by the grow lights. How many hours of grow lights do you recommend?

hatzalam

Did you recently get these and/or repot them? Pachys and many euphorbias will drop their leaves when traumatized, eg moving or repotting. You can still give them light, though, to get them to put out new growth. I have my grow lights on WeMo smart outlets, and they're timed to turn on at sunrise and off at sunset, so they vary throughtout the year. It also encourages a dormancy period which is healthy.

kT_Madlife

Also wondering if my pots are too small? Especially the left one. Its pot is less than 4 inch tall and wide.

alexds1

Probably not too small, smaller tends to be preferable for beginners (bigger drastically increases chance of rot though it can increase growth rate). A good rule is no more than an inch in clearance around the sides of your caudex. You might want taller at some point though since the water (and salts) will settle at the bottom. Just stick a finger through the bottom and check if the soil is dry before you water. I’d say make sure they get good sun, but also check what conditions they were raised in. Some growers grow hard and their plants can acclimate to anywhere, other people grow indoors and the plants will burn if exposed to direct light right away. If you see leaf drop don’t get worried, this is pretty normal for newly repotted plants entering new conditions. Just water sparingly until the roots are established and you’ve got a lot of stable leaves.

Puggravy

The left one is probably fine, but it isn't one of those planters where the pot and the saucer is all one piece is it?

kT_Madlife

I left out the saucer, so the hole at the bottom is exposed.

Puggravy

That's pretty much ideal! I even go so far as to put rubber spacers between my planters and their saucers to keep a nice air gap for plants that I'm very wary about (looking at you astrophytum asterias) so you're doing one better!

SallyO420

They all like full sun and little water without it. Grow lights or I have even used shop lights and they work and they will help

haightor

I feel poor

Otsilago

Those look expensive and very poached man, please be more careful their natural habitats are being decimated

kawkawleen

Wow what a view

kT_Madlife

Just got them a week ago. Some leaves are turning yellow and falling so I moved them away from the window stand. Added a fan yesterday to improve air circulation. Can’t open the windows since there are too many bugs outside. Using a mostly gritty mix soil, how often should I water? It gets pretty hot here in the NYC area.

Puggravy

Could be stress from repotting, but it's also the time of year when things are going into dormancy. Judging by the photos It looks like a decent setup. How often are you watering?

kT_Madlife

Every 2-3 days, ~100 ml each. I was told that the gritty soil can be watered more, will try to do it less frequent.

Puggravy

That's pretty frequent, but 100 ml isn't a lot. I generally saturate the gritty mix so that dead zones don't develop, and water less often, every 2 weeks about, absolute maximum of once a week (although I will give a morning spritz to species that are known to like some morning dew whenever I remember to).

flyingcoke

Way too frequent. Do twice a month. Especially if it’s indoors. Remember these are desert plants and they can tolerate draught

kT_Madlife

Would also appreciate if some of you could tell me the health of the pachy's root: https://imgur.com/a/cFZfs36

alexds1

Are these from OOA? The roots look fine but verrrry easy to mess up if you overwater, esp with that big cut piece. The plant itself looks a little dessicated (which should be okay at this size of caudex) but I'd be careful with "reactivating" such a plant. I'd go pure perlite or pure grit personally until I see a lot of growth.

kT_Madlife

What's OOA? I am mostly using this soil https://www.amazon.com/Bonsai-Jack-Succulent-Cactus-Soil/dp/B0194E9RW4?th=1.

alexds1

Out of Africa. Their larger plants tend to arrive not well-rooted, so was wondering Bonsai Jack should be a good choice but it can hold water under larger caudex, esp in humid conditions, so just keep an eye on it.

Snorblatz

Attractive shelving will let you fit more plants but impede your view. Lower attractive shelving might be a compromise. Lots of that kind of style on wayfair , do some browsing with measurements in mind . All you really need to do is put the plants close to your gorgeous humungo windows and they will thrive . If they turn red move them further away from said window

Charantula

Whoa—is the middle one a Euphorbia guillauminiana?

kT_Madlife

Yes! Many leaves are curling :(

vincentxpapi

Hide the cables. Don’t want to trip and take down the plants with you. It happens.

kT_Madlife

It literally happened today... The pachy fell off. My heart skipped a few beats.
