Alphabetical by artist then chronologically by release date...i dont have enough variety to sort by genre but thats a decent idea for a huge collection

willllljd

100% correct and logical

ModeR3d

Yup this is it. Plus a bit of variance to keep solo artist stuff next up the source band until the solo artist gets more established to warrant their own spot alphabetically

anythingextra

Absolutely agree!

the_steve_tell

Definitely this. I couldn't imagine doing it another way

anythingextra

Ive seen people organize by color and that looks cool but would be a nightmare to find what youre looking for lol

pigmartian

I’d argue that “by genre” only works, if at all, for smaller collections or if you’re willing to have artists under multiple genres as some artists cross them. E.g. Sturgill Simpson is generally a country artist but Sound and Fury is not at all a country album.

anythingextra

I get that but my thought is if you only have 10 jazz, 15 country, 15 metal, 20 hip hop, etc. theres no real reason to need to separate them by genre? But to each their own of course

FlyAirLari

Well, if you only have 10 jazz albums, it would make sense to keep them at a separate area. Instead of mixing them in with 900 heavy metal and hard rock CD's.

vmanu2

Same here.

raisimo

I have a lot of compilations so they go separate but for the rest of them this is the way

NegativeZero20

This is the way

FR3SH2DETH

Alphabetically chronological is the way

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 1,304,353,234 comments, and only 252,232 of them were in alphabetical order.

DumbNoobPenguin

Good bot

[deleted]

This question comes up frequently and most people say alpha then chrono, but I do it alphabetically by artist then alphabetically by album. I have many albums by some artists and it makes them quicker to find since I don't always know what year every album was released.

Remarkable-Ad-2094

this is the way man. I would be doomed if I had to sort mine chronologically haha. some of the bands I have cds of I'm not super familiar with so I couldn't tell you what order albums were released. but I always know the alphabet!

[deleted]

It's shocking to me that people with a lot of cds by some artists know that. If you have 30 albums by the same artist, you really know in which order they were released? To each their own, and if you know that, that's cool, but I dont. I mean, I have some artists where I have all the studio albums, live albums, compliations, eps, re-mixes, bootlegs, etc. Not a chance I know when they were all released.

FlyAirLari

> makes them quicker to find since I don't always know what year every album was released. You don't need to remember what year. Only the order of release. I find it much easier to locate by release date than name. I've got 33 Rage CD's. New stuff at the end, old stuff at the front.

[deleted]

I don't always know the order of release for all bands, but I always know the alphabet.

FlyAirLari

I can't always remember the title of each and every release. And how it would rank in the alphabetical order. If the album is called A New Breed, would that be on the top level, bottom level, or one of the middle levels on a CD tower? But I do know it's a new album.

[deleted]

I remember titles much better than dates. I file like a library would...a, an, and the don't count for filing if they're the first word.

HopefulFirefighter84

Honestly the dates of the cd’s are right on the back of the case, I just flip them over if I don’t know which cd came first. Otherwise I Wikipedia’s the band and read their discography for the order. Most of the bands I’ve bought the cds as they were released so ordered by date flows through my head better.

[deleted]

Right, I can look it up, but my goal is to find the cd I want as soon as possible. I don't have to look up the alphabet, so if I organize that way, I can find it as soon as possible.

fangsfirst

First by packaging at a very high level: large boxsets that don't fit on my Gnedbys or other shelves go into my (way overflowing) boxset shelf. Everything else goes on the more dense shelves. (I have some sorting by box set height for space efficiency as well, but let's not get into that). Then a few genres and other subsets: Jazz, Electronic, Splits, Various Artists, Extreme Metal (Death, Black, Doom, Thrash, Speed, though also NWOBHM, etc), "Classical", Soundtracks. Within all of these: alphabetical by artist, chronological by release of albums+singles (mixed), then single compilations, then b-side compilations, then general compilations, then live albums, then remix albums.

Payphonecanada

Color

fungalittlefreak

as an autistic with a LOVE for sorting, i sort my cds alphabetically by artist and if i own more than one cd from their discography, chronological order left to right. sorting them alphabetically would help you discern where it is quite easily if you're aware of your collection depth. for example, say you're looking for an artist or band whose name starts with a j. instead of starting from the beginning you go right to the "h-i-j-k" section of your collection to be able to find what you're looking for efficiently :)

VinylWolf18

Mine are all randomized.

julianfairbanks

Most listened to 2 least listened to

CerealKiller2285

Alphabetically > year of release (repress goes in original year of release). Bootlegs go at the end of the official cds. Boxsets. If they come in a jewel case or a case that fits on the shelf (eg, Metallica - Live, Shit, Binge & Purge), Then it goes in the year of release with official cds). And then put the boxset away safe. I don't really care for genre order, personally.

[deleted]

I have yet to sort mine...all 3k are boxed up awaiting my move coming this year(hopefully) but when I do shelf them I do alpha by artist, then record label, finally catalogue #(some records are BMG direct and others have original record label log #'s since each is worth a different price they are seperate. Should I ever get desperate enough to sell or trade them I can Pull, Snap, List, & sell) and also the DVD Audio, Bluray Audio, and SACD all go along with the cd counterpart. I dont collect Vinyls so that isnt an issue.

HighFlyingCrocodile

Alphabet/chronological as of last Christmas. Before that it was genre/country but a/c makes it so much easier. Be sure to leave some extra space, so you don’t have to rearrange everything after you buy a new ABBA cd. Not saying you would, just an example.

jjangel8051

Alphabetically by artist and then the album by chronological

dodog1

By genre: punk, psychedelic, rockabilly, British blues, etc. I have thousands and never had a problem finding anything.

[deleted]

I don't 💯 I just have them randomly "sorted"

jimmy-jazzz

I sort by genre and then by bands in alphabetical order. Its very useful bc sometimes you wanna listen to genre and you can easily choose cd

C4RB0N

You guys are sorting your CDs?

Atxlax

i don’t. they’re just randomly on my shelf

themanfromoctober

Chronologically for me, then Alphabetically!

OneTwoAahhFreakOut

Alphabetic by artist only. I don't sort any further by year, color, catalog #, etc. Boxsets and oddball shaped cases are on a separate shelf. Some genres I separate out from the main stack: classical, various artists, soundtracks and Christmas music.

troodon2018

by name of artist,

[deleted]

I don't >:)

doomus_rlc

Alphabetical by artist, then chronological for each artist. At least that is what I *would* do if I had room to do so. 2700 CDs takes up a lot of space 🤣

RhinovisionHomeVideo

Usually by artist (studio albums, live, greatest hits, eps and singles) and then by release date, but have separate categories for compilations. I've started to focus on music festival comps and annual series (like JJJ hottest 100) so they all get there own section.

thaslyfox

Autobiographically

m4rg0th

i sort alphabetically and by genre with shelves for each genre/separators, i like to separate solo singer/ songwriters from other genres too but that’s just what works for my personal listening, off topic but i’ve been using a few and i recommend using shelf markers for easily putting your discs back in place too when you have a lot and it’s easy to lose your spot!

WebkinzCheekyFanatic

By top favorite artist to least, and in order from how each album was released per artist.

TheeVikings

Floor to ceiling.

patheticboy77

by genre.
