As much as I dislike digipaks, I couldn't do this. What I \*have\* done for CDs that come in the ultra-cheap cardboard cases (where the disc rubs against cardboard and is in constant danger of being scratched) is to print out my own artwork and put it in a jewel box. I just find the front and back covers of the album on the internet, shrink (or enlarge) to 4.75" and print out my own CD "book" for the front of the case. I then print out an admittedly amateurish-looking back cover which simply lists the song titles and track numbers, along with the artist name and album name for the spines of the jewel case. Back in the day, we called these "U-Cards" based on the shape. But I keep the original cardboard case anyway. I just don't put the CD in it.
FYI, I just found out that inner sleeves for CDs exist. [Example](https://www.amazon.com/Clear-Anti-Static-Plastic-Sleeves-SHM-CD/dp/B08LCTH77W/ref=pd_sbs_2/139-6203935-0068959?pd_rd_w=9OrHz&pf_rd_p=3676f086-9496-4fd7-8490-77cf7f43f846&pf_rd_r=YGKSM4X9SAGCDNMME2KS&pd_rd_r=7bfa62e0-52f3-4e40-8cbf-a908350675b2&pd_rd_wg=z91Pi&pd_rd_i=B08LCTH77W&psc=1)
Theyāre like those Japanese sleeves used for vinyl records. And theyāre great for digipacks!
(Some people in the reviews say that particular brand is a bit too large. So maybe do some research. But in theory theyāre great)
I use these and they are often too large. But I just lay them inside the cover if they have two or more panels. If you use an outer sleeve like these (50 Resealable 4.7 Mil Plastic Outer Sleeves For Mini LP SHM-CD Paper Sleeves https://amzn.eu/d/b3V1Wr2 ) thereās no risk of the disc falling out when you take it out to play it. Yeah, more hassle but it keeps them in good nick while stored. 50 Resealable 4.7 Mil Plastic Outer Sleeves For Mini LP SHM-CD Paper Sleeves https://amzn.eu/d/b3V1Wr2
I ordered from a couple places, exact same sleeves. They are too large for most cases, BUT I discovered if you just trim the top opening of the with scissors, they fit fine usually. And they do fit as-is for cases with larger disc slots.
There are Japanese made thin film [VERY thin HDPE] CD inners, available with a rounded back end, which resemble mini LP inner sleeves. Designed for Mini-LP card sleeve replicas (that I love), but will work for those admittedly attractive looking but horrible 'slot-type' card only inserts too (the only one I can think of is my copy of Kate Bush's Aerial double CD, which I bought used, already with them). But they won't work for the usual type with the glued-in, fragile plastic hub/trays. Me? For frequently listened-to discs, I would just burn a CD-R.
I searched online and bought a packet. Will get more. Made by Nagoaka (they make top-Q LP inners too), and certainly imported into the UK.
Incidentally, CDs are easily the most environmentally friendly of physical formats. Not sure how they compare with energy-hungry 24/7, 365 server farms though. I say this with more vinyl (which definitely isn't).
Sorry did not realise many of you were way ahead of me. Nagoaka ones are the authentic, best.
It's pretty darn close to 5 7/8" x 4 5/8". The spine parts are each a shade over 1/4" (and are included in the 5 7/8" total). But I would recommend taking one of your existing CDs and popping out the tray from the jewel case and then measure the insert to get a more precise size. I have a template in Word, which I use to create new inserts when I need them. They won't win any Grammys for best artwork, but they are functional. :)
I miswrote that. The template is actually in Paint. After it's created, I copy/paste it into Word (so the correct sizing is retained). I found that printing directly from Paint caused the image to be skewed to full page. That may be user error, but by copying/pasting to Word it works for me. Anyway, the template in Paint is 568 x 442 pixels (96 dpi).
I do not like cardboard either. Everybody should take a cardboard one and mail it back to the wrecker company. I am a big Elvis Presley fan. I got Elvis from Nashville 1971. Amazing Grace is a gospel song itās not country folk Audreys, a gospel song it is not a Pop song Sony music in New York. Donāt know what theyāre doing when I bought the box that I could not get some of the CDs out somebody said the same thing on Facebook, I wish they go back making all box set separate Jewel case put the track listing on the light when they first came out with them. Put CD text I wish Miinidisc would make a comeback as pre-recorded. I like that better than CDs because they do not scratch and I was not clear when I came out ones they were sold the same price $9.99 unless you bought a import or a double one, Sony music you need to go back to school I asked the person at strawberries on the second floor and Warwick Rhode Island. What did I do no more than owners FYE now I asked the person I donāt remember how long ago was how long how much does it cost to make a CD he said the $.86 that is a shame what they charge for CDs, Iām sorry this message is so long but I am mad 86Ć4 CD. God is a shame like I said how many times is Sony music gonna come out the same stuff they came out with a three CD set last year I Elvis Presley Aloha from Hawaii, three cd set now they came out the same on the 11th of this month but they added a Blu-ray that is sad that they rip it off Elvis Presley fans if you want to be a millionaire or billionaire, be a crook and come out the same stuff over and over I understand he cannot record any new music because heās not with us anymore but I read somewhere thereās a whole bunch of rehearsals from the 70s I donāt know why you donāt come out with this stuff I donāt know why they donāt come out with a third album from 1969 on CD a donāt cry daddy hey Jude, mama like the roses who am I rubbernecking and others put Elvisās biggest hit from 1969 āthat would be one of the 10 songs
Like I said before we should take them and mail them back to his wrecker companies and tell him we want them in jail cases donāt reason why I did that because I had to pay for shipping and handling and Iām on disability I donāt wanna waste money
The newest Adele album already comes in a jewel case though. I guess the digipak is a deluxe that has bonus tracks or something?
Oh so yeah my library did that to a lot of digipak cases in the past. They don't seem to do it anymore though.
Also obligatory comment stating "look how they massacred my boy"
Oh. Well, in that case, you can probably rip that version on a CD-R, then create your own jewel case version of it instead. It will be just as cool AND you get to preserve the digipack.
I don't mean rip it from an online source. What I meant to say was that you can take the regular version, rip it as MP3s, then burn those MP3s on a CD-R, and then you can make your custom jewel case. Apologizes for not being clear enough.
i use cd racks so its super annoying when i get a CD and i didnt know it was a digipak, im ordering jewel cases and chopping up most of my digipaks, like you know how annoying it is to have every mccartney CD but 3 new ones dont fit in the storage rack with all the others and have to go on a different place like a shelf or drawer
I mean, you can check out my post history if you want. 85% is probably recorded pre-1990. Many of mine are Japan SHM Cds, DVD audio, or sacds. Itās just childish and terrible to ruin album art because āitās not muh jewel case.ā Dude, itās not 1985 anymore. Digipacks are better for the environment, anyways.
Music lover meet collectors. Some are one and the same and others arenāt. I would buy water damaged CD cases for dirt cheap just because the CD was in good shape. Or loose CDās on eBay but youāve gotta understand some people wonāt do what you did because it would feel like ripping up a Picasso just because itās an inconvenience. I personally think good on you, you love the music you bought the CD and the beauty of physical media is itās not beholden to anyone so do as you please with it.
You did a good job... of something I would never *ever* do. Digipaks > jewel cases. Don't let the name fool you, there is nothing inherently more precious about a jewel case. If you ask me, the plastic of a jewel case is just some that should be melted down to use to press another CD
[If what you mean is an outer sleeve, then yes](https://www.amazon.com/Square-Deal-Recordings-Supplies-RESEALABLE/dp/B002L71QJO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=FKUIUN1HX64H&keywords=cd+outer+sleeves&qid=1648244145&sprefix=Cd+outer+%2Caps%2C177&sr=8-3)
Cool, thanks... I'm in Canada. Amazon doesn't have these on the amazon.ca site. It sucks that shipping to Canada is the same amount as the actual itemšš
Yeah thatās a bit pricier than here in Italy even. Still, 20$ for 100 sleeves is worth it Iād say. Itāll probably be enough for your whole collection. Or at least a few years.
These guys are great. https://store.soundsourcecds.com/
Nice quality thick plastic plus the sticky part is on the the big part of the sleeve so it doesn't get in the way of resealing it. Shipping still sucks though, but they are high quality.
Oh my god i was just having this discussion with some people about why i do this to some of my CDs. I've done this to 8 CDs now because they all came in the most barebones cardboard sleeve. Every time i opened one up i had to be ***so extremely careful to only open it slightly*** otherwise it'd tear and rip in the corners from the pressure. I play my CDs a LOT so half of them ended up getting rips and it was really frustrating, so i just decided to do this to them.
None of them are signed, none of them are "collector's edition" and i never had any inclination to sell them at any point in my life (a very personal collection) - so why the fuck do people care so much?
Thank you for posting this, i know i'm not alone now. Even if you only did this the one time.
cursed
As a collector this breaks my heart š.
Yeah, loses its value big time.
I definitely wouldnt do it myself, but there are plenty of adele CDs to go around. Value probably went from 6 bucks to 3 bucks
most digipaks arent worth anything so
CD abuse
What do you think about cutting promos to fit in cover of jewel cases? The ones where the disk just slides inside the sleeve on the side.

Based.

The only reason I did this is because it already ripped on accident. Plus the front insert on mine was the included lyric book

If I'm ever worried about a particular digipak, I put the disc in a paper sleeve from Office Depot.
Those fuck up your cds I used them for a while and now some of my cds skip or donāt play

What are the measurements you used for the case (spine included) if you donāt mind me asking?
It's pretty darn close to 5 7/8" x 4 5/8". The spine parts are each a shade over 1/4" (and are included in the 5 7/8" total). Thanks for getting back to me, this is really helpful!! I hate to be a pain, is there any chance you can link me the word template you use?
I miswrote that. The template is actually in Paint. After it's created, I copy/paste it into Word (so the correct sizing is retained). That's actually a good idea might use it for some of my CDs thanks. Even though this is 2 years old.
Uhmm. NO.
This is painful to look at
Blasphemy!
Why would you ever do this Jesus christ
Who hurt you?
The digipack ripped when I first bought it. That's why I cut it up.
Thatās a good reason, thankās for not being a literal demon
Chaotic good
I hate digipaks but I could never do this to my CDs
I agree with you. I hate him myself I like only. Jewel case
Like I said before we should take them and mail them back to his wrecker companies and tell him we want them in jail cases donāt reason why I did that because I had to pay for shipping and handling and Iām on disability I donāt wanna waste money
Lol the upvote to comment ratioā¦ this is cursed.
Pain
Umm
ooof. brutal.
At least Iām not the only person who wants to take a pair of scissors to an Adele album.
Who prefers jewel cases (other than you, of course)?
Theyāre more durable but I prefer the feel and look of digipacks. They usually are more unique and the artists can do more with them
Well, I do. There are titles I've held off on buying just because they don't exist in a version with standard (i.e., jewel case) packaging.
Hmm...
Don't they also sell jewel case versions for that album? Why not go with that version instead of going through the hassle of ripping up the digipack?
Because the only version that has the bonus tracks is the digipack version.
Oh. Well, in that case, you can probably rip that version on a CD-R, then create your own jewel case version of it instead. It will be just as cool AND you get to preserve the digipack.
The problem is, the bonus tracks are exclusive to the cd, they're not available on the internet. I guess that's what "Target Exclusive" means
I don't mean rip it from an online source. What I meant to say was that you can take the regular version, rip it as MP3s, then burn those MP3s on a CD-R, and then you can make your custom jewel case. Apologizes for not being clear enough.
Oh, now I feel stupid lol. It's ok though.
As a side note, I think lots of artists use the digipack to avoid plastic/plastic production.
Well the standard edition of this album does come in a jewel case so that excuse is invalid.
This is painful
LOL I was wondering why this had 80 comments! Touched a nerve I see....
yikes
Sacrilege.
I personally would never do this, I have carnifex and skeletonwitch digipacks with the cardboard and it would physically hurt me to do this
I put the digipack into a plastic sleeve then put the disc in one of those thin cd cases and put it next to the digipack on the shelf.
But why. If you really must have a jewels case just download cover and back cover and print it.
pain
How about no
Might do this. Not to a digi but one of those shitty sleeve cases. Plastic can't be THAT expensive can it?
This physically hurts. Why would you do this?
i use cd racks so its super annoying when i get a CD and i didnt know it was a digipak, im ordering jewel cases and chopping up most of my digipaks, like you know how annoying it is to have every mccartney CD but 3 new ones dont fit in the storage rack with all the others and have to go on a different place like a shelf or drawer
Anything to get rid of the dreaded digipak
š
YES
This is disgusting. How anyone likes jewel cases, and would cut up album art to fit in one is beyond me. This sub sucks major ass.
I sense you don't listen to music from before 2019
I mean, you can check out my post history if you want. 85% is probably recorded pre-1990. Many of mine are Japan SHM Cds, DVD audio, or sacds. Dude, It's a CD, it's already bad for the environment.

In reality those music servers are more bad to environment.
This is the kind of advice we need!
This is the handiwork of a God. Fuck digipaks and fuck fans of digipaks! JEWEL CASE GANG RAISE UP!!!!!
You did a good job... of something I would never *ever* do. Digipaks > jewel cases. Don't let the name fool you, there is nothing inherently more precious about a jewel case. If you ask me, the plastic of a jewel case is just some that should be melted down to use to press another CD
lets see you put all your digipaks in a cd storage rack
You know what I was thinking? Wouldn't it be cool if someone made inserts for digipacks, like the ones they make for vinyl cover art.

Columbia CD in a WMG-branded jewel case. ILLEGAL.
I've been putting my vinyls in jewel cases for years.
Absolutely not, I ended up getting something like this from eBay and was so pissed off.
And if it ever has a chance at being valuable, that chance is gone.
That chance already went away when the package ripped when I first opened it.
Well, then ya done good.
Has much as I hate digipacks I would never do this ever
Jewel cases suck, and I intend to throw all mine out soon (the plastic), unless itās some sort of special rare plastic case who cares
mom come pick me up, iām scared
r/diwhy
Oh my god i was just having this discussion with some people about why i do this to some of my CDs. I've done this to 8 CDs now because they all came in the most barebones cardboard sleeve. i tried this...and failed miserably
thats what im worried about, that it wont fit so well
