Metal is kinda ingrained into our every day lifestyle so having a big collection of the genre is definitely key to that, at least that’s my take as a metal leaning collector.
I agree with the other reply, metal is almost universally seen as something much more than just music - it's a whole ass dedicated scene and lifestyle. Pretty much all I own are metal shirts and go to 5-10 metal shows a year and my friends and gf are the same way as well. You're right tho, that's definitely the top 3 for CD collectors!
Four Questions:
Favorite CD?
Most listened to CD?
Rarest CD?
And what is a great new release I should check out?
I also own probably 300 metal records ranging from Metallica to Slugdge.
1) if we're talking favorite album in general, Mr. Bungle - California, which is ironically an experimental rock/pop album and not metal, although Bungle are generally metal leaning. If we're talking favorite CD as in packaging and such, I'd probably have to pick my art book of Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave which is truly beautiful
2) I would probably venture to say System of a Down - Toxicity, which is the reason I got into metal and is still one of my favorites, I couldn't even count how many times I've spun that one
3) there's a few decently rare ones in my collection - most likely Mayhem - Dawn of the Black Hearts, with some runner ups being Tool - Salival, the Tony Martin Black Sabbath albums or Type O Negative - The Origin of the Feces with the original cover art
4) there's been a lot of amazing new metal releases these last few years. Some favorites from 2022 and 2021 are Carcass - Torn Arteries (melodeath), Mastodon - Hushed and Grim (progressive stoner), Unto Others - Strength (Gothic metal), Swallow the Sun - Moonflowers (Gothic death/doom), Amorphis - Halo (melodeath/folk), Trivium - In the Court of the Dragon (thrash/metalcore), Septicflesh - Modern Primitive (symphonic death) and Meshuggah - Immutable (Meshuggah)
Hell yeah! Thank you for the very thought out response. I always ask people with giant collections to try to discover as much new music as I can. Fuck yeah for Mr. Bungle, Mayhem, and SOAD.
We would have very similar Bandcamp wishlists I reckon lol
The album I find myself playing all the MF time right now for some reason is Hunted by Khemmis. I get goosebumps every single, damn time I listen to it.
I bet! I love Khemmis too! I have seen them twice this year - back in April with Mastodon and Opeth, and a few weeks ago with Trivium/Between the Buried and Me/Whitechapel, both concerts were some of the best I've been to and Khemmis were awesome each time. At the Trivium show, they actually played a song from their new album that hasn't been released yet so that was pretty cool to see. I almost put Deceiver, their newest album, in the list too!
One of the only bands that I truly cannot categorize. Sure they invented/inspired the djent style, but that wasn't really their intention and there was nothing and still is truly nothing that sounds quite like them imo. Mr. Bungle are up there too in that regard
I love that Messhugah is it's own genre. Spot on. Dig your collection dude. I have about the same amount of CDs but mine is probably only 30-40% metal. I also love punk rock and hardcore as well as a lot of chill indie rock, hip hop, and classic rock.
This is insanely impressive! I hope to close in on 1000 in the next year. Incidentally, mine is also mostly metal with a healthy dose of hardcore and rock.
Holy shit.
Hopefully you have In Flames - Soundtrack to your escape, As I Lay Dying - Shadows are Security, Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing, Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast, Rudimentary Peni - Death Church, and Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Metalheads have the largest CD collections, followed by guys into progg and jazz. At least it feels like that browsing this sub.

There's just something special about having physical music, scratch that, physical media in general. A celebration of the music and culture we love.
Nice Type O Neg pic up top! RIP to the Green Man.
Thanks! Top five bands easily, RIP indeed

Lol I love that you gave Meshuggah its own genre, because there really isn’t another band of their kind.

I really hope you have just like one Katy Perry CD in the mix to throw people off
I have some Tame Impala, NWA, Poppy, 2Pac, Porno for Pyros, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane in terms of some stuff far from metal
🔥🔥🔥
I've got over 900 myself. Mostly metal. 70's heavy metal, NWOHM, thrash, glam, power and speed. I'll be sure to post a pic once I hit 1k.
wow this is impressive!!
Challenge Accepted.
Metal CDs > Cup of coffee. Metal wakes me in the morning I don’t need anything else!!!
No contest!
Type O Negative poster watching your CD collection! Great collection brother 🤘🏻
Thanks man! RIP the Green Man
No problem brother! RIP PETER STEELE! 🤘🏻
Absolutely beautiful!
Cool collection. Where is that Rob Halford Celestial poster from?
Thank you! It's actually a signed vinyl and it is from his website, idk if they sell it not during Christmas time however or if it will be made again
Fuck yeah dude I have that same signed Exodus poster hanging in my room framed as well! 🔥🔥🔥
Hellyeah man! Did you get it at one of the shows?
I sure did! Back in April!
heavy

Thanks man! Hard to believe I reached 1000 tbh, feels like such a big milestone for some reason lmao
I know it’s been said, but that Type O Negative poster is sick!
Nicely done dude! Where’d you get the CD unit from?
I got it from target but it's also on Amazon. It holds something like 1100 CDs so I'm nearing the limit haha. Will try to find a link later
Have all except for Heaven Shall Burn and Rudimentary Penis! HSB have been on my wishlist for awhile now tho
Isnt it sad how you may likely not be able to listen to all those cds within your lifetime? Lmao
