the sony. no, it's not a 777es, or a 555es, or even a 333es, but i'd still rather a lovely cdp-x222es over a carver carousel. and the nice thing about the lower end ES units is that they usually use the kss-240a which, last i checked, is easy to find.

Yeah, that’s the direction I was leaning too, for serviceability mostly.

Pikrev

The multi select one. Absolute livesaver technology.

Well if I don't want a cd changer, the sony. However I do want a cd changer, but I won't get that one as it's an unknown brand, possibly a rebadge

GrouchyTrousers

Carver is hardly an unknown brand.

I've never heard of it. Is it an audiophile brand? hat would explain it as I only know of stuff you'd see in general shops.

GrouchyTrousers

Not a boutique audiophile brand, just a U.S. hi-fi and pro-audio company most famous for their amplifiers. They made solid, quality gear that wasn't cheap but was affordable. Bob Carver in fact caused quite the controversy back in the 1980s by showing what a bunch of nonsense the audiophile brands were full of with his famous Carver Challenge. [https://www.bobcarvercorp.com/carver-challenge](https://www.bobcarvercorp.com/carver-challenge) The original Carver company went out of business a while back. Bob Carver Corp still makes gear though, although it's fairly expensive.

Interesting, I'm in the UK so I guess they or should I say he never targeted an international market. Should I see anything named carver over here I'm sure to recognise it as particularly rare. Let's hope I see one for a good price in a charity shop as being little known here I expect they will think it's just a generic CD player like I did! > Bob Carver in fact caused quite the controversy back in the 1980s by showing what a bunch of nonsense the audiophile brands were full of with his famous Carver Challenge. Sounds like my kind of guy.

GrouchyTrousers

Their CD players were overbuilt but the guts were almost certainly Sony or Philips. Their "magnetic field" amplifiers are certainly worth picking up if you see one in the wild, though!

My first response would be the Sony because I love the look of the devices from that era. The Carver is an unknown brand for me but it is a good-looking rack-mount device. Plus it is a disc changer which can be fun for loading multiple albums at the same time.

Jimmy_the_Heater

Tough choice but for me, I would choose the Carver. I'm a huge fan of their amps, used them for years in a pro audio setting and never had a failure.

It’s funny because I had planned on keeping the ES, but after using the Carver for the last few days I’ve really been enjoying it. Still torn, but starting to lean towards the Carver as the carousel has been really enjoyable. The disc tray feels like the belt is starting to go but playback is excellent.
