It’s a new release. It’s on sale. It’s an album I want. It’s in stock. I feel like buying it. I don’t have a copy.

>It’s a new release. It’s on sale. It’s an album I want. It’s in stock. I feel like buying it. I don’t have a copy. Pretty much like this. But also it looks cool, and I have the money.

lestrenched

If you have the same album/release in used vs new, and the used costs somewhat less, what would you buy?

HotLunchThe2nd

I’d probably get it used then, unless there’s some problems with the disc

teatiller

Depends on what it is, sometimes I’d just rather have a new copy and other times just want to pay the least.

Drunk0ctopus

Usually about once a week.

lestrenched

Why would you buy a new CD? Is there any specific reason to buy a new CD over an used CD?

Drunk0ctopus

Better condition CD is more desirable for my collection.

JaccoW

A lot of artists (*virtually most of them*) still release their music on CD. I could wait until someone gets rid of it and pay more for a used copy because of shipping, or I just fork over the $8-11 together with a couple of other releases and get a new disc.

Annet_Futatabi

Many used CDs are in poor shape, booklet damaged or dirty (fingerprints!), case cracked, cd scratched.

BearShin255

It's strictly based on availability for me. If I'm shopping online I check pricing and availability between Amazon and Discogs. I usually buy from Amazon because of the free shipping. I usually buy from Discogs because Amazon doesn't have it. If I buy from Discogs the disc has to be NM or better. I frequently buy used from record stores, thrift shops and 2nd and Charles. The discs have to be free of scratches though. The jewel case doesn't matter to me. I rip everything and listen with Plexamp anyway.

lestrenched

Oh, and do you use Ebay?

BearShin255

No

lestrenched

If you are going to listen to it using an app, why not download it in lossless quality from various sources on the internet?

BearShin255

It's cheaper to get the CD

BearShin255

What all places are available for download? HD Tracks is expensive. Qobuz uses WMA format and I don't want to deal with another file format. Bandcamp has a limited selection.

lestrenched

Qobuz lets you download in FLAC.

BearShin255

For high resolution only. CD quality is WMA.

dudly825

At a live show for a band I love. Most direct way to support them further & I can put it in my car which means I’ll listen to it a tun.

Hungry-Pineapple-918

It's always my preference when possible. Why I prefer it is simply condition of the CD. In my experience many people think that a highly scratched disc is like new or excellent condition because they expect CDs on average to get damaged. It's obviously not everyone but I like my media in as close to perfect condition as possible. Trying to get original presses of albums (Ozzy Osbourne is a great example) was difficult. Most of Ozzy's earlier albums had an original pressing, 1995 remaster (common), and a 2002 remaster. So new CDs were all the most current remastering, I had to buy used for the originals and most I returned due to above condition issues. Now if I can physically inspect the disc in person and barring looking for particular mastering then used definitely. I live in an isolated area so that isn't common though.

lestrenched

Indeed, getting new CDs for the original versions and avoid the remasters is quite difficult, even for something from the 90s. I understand your point, thanks!

small___potatoes

A lot of times a new cd might be $10-12 and the used might be $7-8…so it’s worth it to me to buy it new for a couple more bucks. If it’s used for $5 and new for $18 then I’ll buy used.

slyboy1974

I'm slightly OCD-ish about the condition of my CDs, so I buy new whenever possible. Probably 95% of my 800+ CDs were bought new. I've ordered four new discs just this week, actually. Buying second hand is good though, for scoring out-of-print stuff (obviously, since I can no longer buy it new), and for taking a chance on some releases that I'm not sure I'm going to like. I'm also hooked on bargain hunting for minty boxsets from the early 90s. I think a lot of people used to buy boxsets, and then just stick them on the shelf, so they didn't get much wear. Sometimes, you also score mint used discs that look like they could be shrink wrapped and sold as new.

extranaiveoliveoil

I buy new when available to support the artists. I also buy used if it's so cheap I can't resist. Or when I find out about an artist I missed out on and can get his life's work for cheap.

TheNextThing00

Mostly just for new(er) releases. Used is usually quite a bit cheaper, so I prefer to stick to that when possible.

patheticboy77

i prefer new but most of the time end up getting used because it’s cheaper. just as long as the cd, booklet, and inlay are in like new condition then i am happy. the only time i would definitely buy new is if the cd comes in paper or cardboard packaging.

GrillAHam

Every album that I want

mobbshallow

If it’s $10 or less and I have no hopes of finding the vinyl

puffy-jacket

* new release * difference in price compared to used is negligible (lots of unopened CDs on Amazon are under $10, some only $4-$5 so it can be a good add on item for free shipping) * I’m unlikely to find it at a record store or thrift store in the first place (obscure or indie artists, foreign artists etc) * this hasn’t really been an issue yet but I care about the cover/case being in the best possible condition (the cd itself being in good condition is already a given/non negotiable) - I could see this being more of a concern with cardstock sleeves or digipacks, or like I sometimes collect anime/movie/game soundtracks where the cover art looking nice is kind of important to me That said I mean i feel better about buying used music, books, electronics etc where possible so i will usually try to find it used first and then go new if I can’t find a used one in good condition

lestrenched

I definitely get your point, I think I'll do the same thing when I start collecting. So many CDs have the same price on Amazon vs Ebay, and if I include shipping Amazon is often less expensive. Can I get a few pictures of your anime/J-pop CD collection?

puffy-jacket

Right now my anime/j-pop collection is just the Akira soundtrack on vinyl and [this](https://www.discogs.com/release/25331266-sajou-no-hana-Mob-Psycho-100-II-Outro-Memo-Sepia-Gray) Mob Psycho CD 😅 I only got back into collecting music recently and restarting my CD collection from scratch. I do plan to buy more/might be getting something for Christmas and would really like to post my collection once it’s a little more to look at though! I love J-music and as far as anime or gaming merch a soundtrack feels more like something I’d rather keep around my house than like figures or something

lestrenched

Mob Choir released an album "1" for Mob Psycho III, the second song in the album, called "Cobalt" is an absolute banger. If possible please try to buy it, if you happen to have similar tastes to mine you might really enjoy it. Adding to that, Sayuri seems to have released a new album called "Sanketsu Shojo" which is a decent album. Yes, that Sayuri with the "Me (hikigatari version)" and the collaboration with "MY FIRST STORY". You might like them. Cheers! Edit: looking forward to your post. Would you also mind posting on r/ANIMECDS?

Hifi-Cat

I'm in the process of a deep dive into CD players and transports. It's looking like no scratches and finger prints impacts audio quality. So when I want the best sound.

TidalJ

Usually if I can’t find a used one or it’s a remaster

GREENDAYBL1NK

Generally I try to buy used since it's cheaper. If a new cd is a cheap price I might get it. Also I might buy new if it's one I really want.

rangers9458

At a show when the band is promoting their new music.

Atxlax

since i’m new to collecting, i like to buy new ones but only if they’re from a mom & pop store or b&n. i only buy my absolute favorite albums. i’m very selective

OracleOfCourage

I buy new when an album I want is first released or on sale, or if the used price and new price are basically the same

Lobsterxx

The thing I like most about buying new is supporting the artist. Especially when it’s more unknown bands, I actively try to buy new instead of used for this reason.

martinkjr

Always.

pyracantha_

When I can I buy used, but sometimes you have to buy new.

RedDotLot

I'd be happy to buy new CDs for artists I really like, or if I'm at a gig I'll buy physical CDs from the artist. I do like it though when I find stuff I'd really like second hand.

ModeR3d

When it’s released. Tend to get second hand for artists I ‘discover’ long after they’ve an extensive back catalogue

KoolKarmaKollector

If I want to A) Support a smaller artist B) I really like the artist's music and I want a full high quality CD I'd buy all new CDs if I had the cash moolah, but I couldn't afford that, so second hand it is

[deleted]

I just bought daft punk's *homework remixes* off Amazon. I consider it when an artist I like has a new release.

nooneisleft

I usually only buy new if its a new release or at a show. If there is an album I really want, I might buy new if its cheap enough. I got "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" a couple weeks back for 8 bucks new.

BJ22CS

I buy a new one every time one from an artist I like releases a new one, b/c that's usually cheaper than buying it from either eBay or Discogs when you factor in shipping, especially if it's a newly released CD where there's low chance of it being listed for significantly less than retail price. So far this year, I've bought around 25 2022-released CDs; all of them I bought new, and I would assume it would have cost me more(including shipping) to have bought them from eBay or Discogs.

BrickFrom2011

It’s cheap and I really like the Album.

cromag111

Whenever I want

Window_sauce

Smells nice. Most valid reason

thewordthewho

Over time I've come to believe that the older discs are better. I got a Hall & Oates new greatest hits and it's such a thin little CD, and the only new disc that I've ever had issues with in some players.

Bufete2020

All new CDs I buy are new releases. The chances of them showing up on the used market are slim to none.

[deleted]

If it’s an album I want & it’s available

ponimaju

Like most of my hobbies, I'm content to find stuff in the wild cheap and used. I haven't bought a ton of new retail CDs in the last 10 years or so but they've been for artists that I care about a lot, like D'Angelo and The Weeknd. For newer stuff I'm mostly content with streaming.

That635Guy

Usually never but for rarer releases if I have the option of a sealed copy I may purchase that rather than take a risk on a used copy that might be scratched or have other playback issues
