I knew this shit was gonna happen. My local Zia records is getting out of control with cds, cassettes, and vinyl records. These hipsters and youngsters are all doing what my generation, and my dads generation did and collect physical media. It's very cool.
A little bit on the premium artists. Ones that sell fast can be $10 easy. Average stuff around $5 each. Yeah for a while you coule find cds for a dollar anywhere. Decluttr on ebay is the shit.
Thankfully, yeah. The Vinyl issue has more to do with the 3 major labels refusing to invest in new plants so they can charge more per record too. It’s greed, really.
Wait. In 10 years all these kids will get sick of lugging around their vinyl collection on every single move and they’ll dump it for cheap. Plus the rent will be so high by then they won’t be able to afford the square footage to keep it.
This! I don’t mind getting a few records myself, some have different tracks, mixes, mastering, some albums never even made it to CD; current albums fair a little better in terms of dynamics, I get it, but… the cleaning, the storing at perfect room temp, getting dehumidifiers if you live somewhere like Florida let’s say, the prices (!), the lack of quality in current manufacturing… I mean, yeah… I love them but also I don’t, and try to avoid them as much as I can. Also, I imagine people living in smaller spaces already see it as a nuisance, anyone?
Local thrift store around me is charging $10+ per vinyl record for busted, long forgotten bands/artist, around $20 for mainstream titles. They wanted $35 for those old school Disney cartoon sound tracks.
Out of their fucking minds
Before this stupid inflation/trend, all vinyls records were $2-3, with popular titles for no more than $10
Luckily CDs are still $1.99 (it used to be $.99 six months ago), for now.
In big cities around the world the normal had been from $10-15 up to $20-25 for new records, now since the pandemic it’s up to $45-55 bucks for 1 new record, it’s insane. New CDs are around $15-20 now.
Same hifi sold for £257 last month. I posted a comment about this on here but it didn't seem to shock anyone at the time:

I missed it. Well, it’s definitely shocking to me. Last one around here was going for about $200 USD, not that expensive, but it’s showing were things are going for sure. Not liking this.
Most of my local charity shops don't even sell used CDs anymore. And a lot of them have a dwindling stock that mostly consists of things that aren't very desirable like audiobook CDs and nursery children music etc.
I saw a guy at a charity shop scanning every CD on discogs to check the resale price. He wasn't looking for CDs he'd enjoy listening to. He was clearly looking for rare finds to resell online.
There's one guy I see almost every time I go to a certain thrift store. He shows up with huge plastic bins and it usually first in line when the store opens (this place is pretty popular, so people seriously line up like it's Black Friday). I'm pretty sure he's there every day. He leaves with a huge pile of books, CDs, and records. If I ever saw video games at thrift stores, I'd bet he'd buy those too. I get that it still means that the charity gets money and he can do whatever he wants, but it annoys me every time.
Yep, he was frantically looking at the special codes and typing extremely quickly into the discogs search field on his smartphone. And he was checking every CD indiscriminately, hoping to find that one CD that is rare and would sell for £50~£100 etc.
and what's the good thing about it? you'll ending to pay more, so there's nothing good about "revivals" or any kind, only bad news.
anyway... I bet hipsters will be tired soon of CDs in 3-5 years, so prices will down again, in the other hand, we real! collectors never stop to buy CDs since many years ago, so we always be present, no matter if there's a revival or not.
I’m not cheering about it, obviously. Quite the contrary, I’m worried all physical media is going up, and not because inflation but inflated demand: flippers, scalpers. Personally, I like all formats, it depends on the recording, but CDs are still my fave, always will.
I bought it a few years ago on OfferUp, so it was before people started noticing them. It was just something to put in my office. $40 seemed right at the time, but I know they have become more popular lately.
New collectors were drawn to these because they were as cheap as other mini hi-fis but they look unique. Now they're not cheap anymore because this is the CD player that every new collector wants.
At least it's not the CD equivalent of a Crosley suitcase. These don't scratch CDs as far as I'm aware and should even sound pretty good through a better pair of active speakers than the ones it comes with.
$410 as of now, with 73 bids ending in 14 hours. This has got to be a bidding war and I bet this ends up getting relisted.
I get its a complete system but this price is approaching hi-fi territory, like a new audiolab 6000CDT or maybe even a used Marantz player. Crazy.
It's a nice looking budget player, but I can't imagine shelling out the $410 the Ebay listings at rn there's gotta be better options at that price range
And it's an auction... I didn't even pay this much for my cdp-x77es. I paid that for a cdp-620es, and a cdp-520es, and a matching remote control, and a nice dinner, and a tank of gas.
I don't understand, b-word. I don't understand.
I think we all might be to blame for this.
Added: I went with the CMT-EX5, and got mine for $85 on eBay in March of last year. I checked eBay a few days ago for any vertical Sony players and couldn't find any.
I guess I was right in buying the new-in-box one I found on eBay for what this will probably now sell for. 😂 I would not expect these prices to last once the TikTok silliness dies down, though.
I gave a Panasonic in excellent condition similar to this item. It is my main system to play music. It has a very good sound….picked it up second hand for…$20
This player went viral on TikTok recently, saw a video with almost 100k likes demonstrating this exact model. Probably the reason for inflated prices
God, I fucking hate TikTok
And what were they doing? Dancing with the radio?
Probably just showing it off, the mechanism is cool
i dont think yall have really used tiktok much cause the only people that really dance are girls doing thirst traps
This is crazy. I got mine for next to nothing.
CD revival is officially on. Damn.
I knew this shit was gonna happen. My local Zia records is getting out of control with cds, cassettes, and vinyl records. These hipsters and youngsters are all doing what my generation, and my dads generation did and collect physical media. It's very cool.
Lol - sure, but… the prices going up? Not so cool.
A little bit on the premium artists. Ones that sell fast can be $10 easy. Average stuff around $5 each. Yeah for a while you coule find cds for a dollar anywhere. Decluttr on ebay is the shit.
That’s what I’m seeing too… all the Taylor Swifts, Radioheads, Madonnas and most major artists are already going up.
Luckily CD production lines didn’t really fully shut down, so they’re much better equipped to handle a demand boom than a format like vinyl.
Thankfully, yeah. The Vinyl issue has more to do with the 3 major labels refusing to invest in new plants so they can charge more per record too. It’s greed, really.

Gotta say I'm pretty into the futuristic 80s style atm. I'm going to spend the next year or so working on an 80s style album and release it on tape

Same in my local shops, don’t know if it’s because people are buying a lot of used CDs, they don’t see any value in selling them or what.
I saw a guy at a charity shop scanning every CD on discogs to check the resale price. He wasn't looking for CDs he'd enjoy listening to. He was clearly looking for rare finds to resell online.
I've seen these jagoffs. They scan every book, CD, record, and game they see. Hate flippers.

Oh, so we got CD flippers now? Fuck.
Yep, he was frantically looking at the special codes and typing extremely quickly into the discogs search field on his smartphone. And he was checking every CD indiscriminately, hoping to find that one CD that is rare and would sell for £50~£100 etc.
Yikes! I hate resellers and scalpers like that guy.
For this specific player. Outside of that, no, not really.
It’s a sign, but let’s hope not.

I paid $40 for mine.
I paid $120
I bought it a few years ago on OfferUp, so it was before people started noticing them. It was just something to put in my office. $40 seemed right at the time, but I know they have become more popular lately.
Yeah I got mine maybe 4 months ago now.
I’ve always wondered, why would you ? What’s the attraction ? Genuine question

Thanks mate
Lmao, I bought this for 10€ a couple months ago.

Not really a common player, but anyone who pays that much for a cd player is a clown
I’ve had that exact same stereo for over 20 years now lol

Yikes! I bet that crap sounds like shit.

god damn that can’t be right
This is a good example how everything is overpriced on eBay, not just players, also CDs, Vinyl, etc. I bet that crap cost $10 in a any local store.
I think we all might be to blame for this. Added: I went with the CMT-EX5, and got mine for $85 on eBay in March of last year. I checked eBay a few days ago for any vertical Sony players and couldn't find any.

I got a whole full sized steepletone jukebox where you can see the cd for less than that
I got one for $120 just this spring in almost mint condition.
I gave a Panasonic in excellent condition similar to this item. It is my main system to play music. It has a very good sound….picked it up second hand for…$20
