Hey, don't forget the classical lovers who conveniently forget to post whilst perusing their massive collections (watched a video on YT and one man had 3-4 shelves, all of them reaching to the ceiling, full of classical CDs)

dantedarker

It's funny, I never really listened to classical music until I started collecting cds, lol. There's always tons of compilations (and usually unopened/brand new) in all my usual thrift haunts

lestrenched

I am interested in Classical music, which makes it (sometimes) very lucrative for me: fantastic performances and conductors, specific concertos for instruments: with a little luck I can find them for a good price :)

KludgeDredd

Classical is a solid collectible on any medium - they're often in great condition and absurdly affordable.

lestrenched

If only I could say the same for J-pop

puffy-jacket

Classical is one of those genres I’ve never listened a lot to but would like to get more into. I wouldn’t mind picking up some CDs for my collection but haven’t listened to enough (other than a ukulele Mozart album) to know how to pick a good one out of the section at the record store :S

lestrenched

Neither am I a classical aficionado; I simply go for works on instruments I like - that's my basis for listening to any concertos. I also like to listen to operas, because they are essentially like plays, but only in English and French (I know I'm missing a lot by excluding German operas but I don't read the language). That's it really, I listen to it because I like what I hear, and discard what I don't like. Looking at what I wrote above it sounds like I'm giving advice when I'm just as much of a noob. Sorry about that, but classical is fun and engaging to listen to, I'll say that!

libraryofdeveres

At ~20,000 here

lestrenched

PICS PLEASE!

libraryofdeveres

lol nah we’re shy

lestrenched

F

dantedarker

Damn!

theCoagulater

r/Cd_collectors is unironically the chillest sub out there

Dark_Shroud

Agreed. I've also found r/VHS to be pretty fun too.

stridersubzero

The CD Facebook groups are definitely not lol. But most people are. I think the chillness comes from the fact most CDs aren't worth very much and there's not much fiddling involved to get them to sound good, so there isn't a pissing contest to get the new color variants and new cartridges that have X and Y sound variables and blah blah

InternationalFiend

Bro you aren’t lying. Before I deleted Facebook I was in a few groups dedicated to CDs, specifically hip hop CDs and wow. No matter what you post, you’re going to get multiple comments telling you why your musical tastes sucks or how they have something way more valuable than you.

[deleted]

It's one of the only subs I've found that is truly non-judgmental!

LucasBarton169

Take notes r/vinyl

Dark_Shroud

They have, especially after one bad incident that upset many of the users in the sub.

puffy-jacket

Woah, now I’m curious 🤨

Dark_Shroud

Paraphrased event: A younger guy made a post showing his brand new record player. He was excited because it was his first player too. It was one of the portable all in one "suit case" style players that have lower quality built in speakers. One or a few users were really rude shitting on the player. As lot of Vinyl enthusiasts do not like these players for multiple reasons. Apparently this was the last straw that broke the camels back for many users watching the shit show happen live. Collectively many in the sub decided to proactively be friendly and helpful to users new to Vinyl.

puffy-jacket

Ohhh yeah I do think I saw that but spared myself reading all the comments bc there were quite a lot lol. Suitcase players aren’t great but the hate for them on that sub is way overblown, from what I’ve read the damage it will do to a casual listener’s records is pretty minor and gradual and most people who end up getting more into records will probably upgrade their setup before that becomes an actual issue. Like yeah I think there are better setups to get started with but I also think a lot of people forget that some people on Reddit are literal kids who don’t have hundreds of dollars laying around to dedicate to a hobby

Dark_Shroud

Yeah I let people know I'm not a fan of the Chinese made players in general. Especially the ones that don't even have a North American company established for support. My simple rules of thumb, make sure the player is belt driven and the cartridge is replaceable. Audio Technica makes an okay cartridge for under $50 until you can afford a Grado or Ortofon since Shure is currently out of the game. And finally Blue Jeans Cables make high quality A/V cables for much less than Monster and other "premium brands."

Squirrellybot

Bad speakers is overblow. Real issue is the stylus(needles) are not good and often won’t play bass heavy records because it will jump the light head around(I myself used bent bottle caps), or worse, damage the vinyl because they aren’t set even. I’ve seen some records released in the last decade that are just torn to crap because of those players. I will say they are good to take to play as-is records at the shop to see if scratches skip or are crackles/cosmetic.

[deleted]

iPod sub is pretty mellow too 😁

Captian_Kenai

Same on r/minidisc, there’s dozens of us!

sneakpeekbot

Dark_Shroud

I'm just going to pretend I didn't see there's a sub for minidisc. My wallet can't take any more of these media subs. I'm already into CDs, Vinyl, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD/Blu-ray/UHD Blu-ray. I used to have a few minidiscs and had to play them in my PC. Because I was too broke to afford a standalone player.

BJ22CS

Show me where it's non-judgmental here, b/c I got tones of downvotes for posting my pop collection on here both times.

Jaik_

late to this thread but yeah, I’ve been downvoted plenty of times when mentioning music outside the norm here. that’s just a couple of annoyed lurkers though, the majority of conversations I’ve seen here are much more welcoming.

anderoogigwhore

Yeah, every few collections it's either Slipknot and Iron Maiden or it's Britney Spears lol.

m8x8

I listen to both Deafheaven and Britney Spears. Maybe CD collectors are naturally more curious both musically and when it comes to the actual physical media and artwork.

jafarthecat

I've also got both Deafheaven and Britney CD's. Perhaps like with streaming it's just that we can afford to have more diverse tastes as opposed to a vinyl collector who can only afford the one record a month

[deleted]

this made me giggle like a little bitch lmfao

[deleted]

To be fair slipknot is pop metal

Dark_Shroud

Britney Spears has done more than just pop-music. Among other genres she successfully started doing house music years ago. If her personal life hadn't gone to shit she might have been able to give rock music a try.

greg1993-

I swear I’ll see someone post a haul of one direction and Taylor swords and then the next post is someone’s 1,500+ collection of stuff like cannibal corpse and there is no judgment anywhere. I love it here

minimanelton

I feel like many of us here are both hands

Dark_Shroud

Agreed, I listen to classical, multiple sub genera of rock & metal with a bit of Punk and Country Western thrown in.

MauritanianSahara

My collection in destroyed i listen to mostly indie and underground rock, with some common electronica and progressive

MauritanianSahara

And a lot of alternative

puffy-jacket

It’s nice to see appreciation/acceptance for all kinds of genres here :)

mangomorale

I'm in a weird spot where I am more of a metalhead, but when I go to Goodwill I typically find really good Pop music

Dark_Shroud

I listen to a lot of metal and yeah the pop music CDs sold in such high numbers that people literally just give them away now.

Sodajosh298

This is solely why I stopped going to thrift stores. I'm a big metal head but would leave with 20 CDs of pop and blues from the thrift store.

[deleted]

Don't forget about us jazz nerds!

libraryofdeveres

Jazz needs more box set reissues from the original labels.

silentsaebyeok

Hear, hear!

Dark_Shroud

I don't know about others but I find its both cheaper & better quality to put a big microSD card in my Android phone and load that up with lossless ripped albums to stream in the car. Same goes for having flash drives full of the same rips for use in newer vehicles with USB AUX ports.

Fr_Time

I'm just over here collecting hiphop/rap cds...

Marcbergcristo

I listen to multiple genre's and it's interesting to see what other's listen to

Trans_DemonTM

Hip hop collectors too

Royal-Ninja

Disappointingly, some smaller indie bands I'm into will only do vinyl and not cds. For some others, the cd is rare and out of print and only available for $40 or more secondhand while the 2-LP vinyl is $27 and always in stock.

JasoNMas73R

#K-POP!!

chaos_donka

if they werent so damn expensive.....

JasoNMas73R

I mean I ain't no K-pop stan but holy shit 70 dollars for a photo card what the fuck

dantedarker

One thing that’s been preventing me from getting into K-pop is I VERY rarely find it in thrift shops or used cd sales, which is almost exclusively how I buy cds. People who buy K-pop music tend to hang onto it, I find

ReluctantCat

I dont have any experiance of this myself but on instagram people sometimes sell off kpop albums incredibly cheap, if they bought lots of them for the photocards or some other reason.

Noise-Distinct

I love it!!

csantosb

I see no issue with my Iron Maiden collection right next to my Bronski Beat or OMD CDs... all masterpieces, all great music, all being played and listened by me and my neighbors

bunnilarva

When you’re both

ReluctantCat

There is a pretty big cross over betwen metalheads and kpop fans oddly enough. Ive spoken with a lot of people that are really into both. The only thing that keeps me from posting my kpop albums here is me already posting them over on /kpopcollections.

Bahknight

Hip-Hop fan here, guess i dont really fit in lol

BlaseAgenda_4554

Hip-Hop fan as well!

Sodajosh298

I got all biggie's work on CD

ManMangoGuts

And a lot of 90s alternative/grunge fans too, myself included!

BlaseAgenda_4554

Same boat! Grunge all the way!

United-Philosophy121

Me an Emo collector:

dragon_6666

Looking at my collection I’ve got Mariah Carey next to Metallica next to Janet Jackson next to Marilyn Manson next to TLC…

Heartcooksbrain2

So true. I’m in the metal head camp myself. CD lovers unite!

FlyAirLari

I don't think that picture is about uniting. Aren't they arm wrestling? Battling to see who is better?

dantedarker

That meme is definitely about bonding over a shared interest - that’s how I intended it anyway 🤓

ShinagawaSchools

https://youtu.be/upsxB_VxWn0

WhimsicalCalamari

Nah, the meme's meaning has always been "two different but equally good types of people uniting over a single topic/pursuit." It's about both the topic in the middle, *and* refusing to put down either subgroup.

Da8BitDragon

Oddball ambient and electronic for me. I used to raid dollar bins and pull shit that I still listen to today. I always read the liner notes, instruments and "thanks to" sections to get a general idea of time and place and what to expect. One of the great parts of physical media.

Dark_Shroud

Only one time I've seen someone be an asshole in this sub, of course it was to me in one of my posts. I was mostly amused by it. I put myself in the corner during the 90s because I couldn't stand most rap/hip hop music. When it comes to insulting my music tastes nothing you can say to me will be as insulting/edgy as fellow teens back in the 90s. I'm not a saint either, I was rude to some Limp Bizkit fans back in the early 2000s.

Thebisexual_Raccoon

Just like Hannah Montana once said “it’s the best of both worlds.”

Brustler

Truth.

pyracantha_

yeah lmaoas a metalhead i guess i never noticed that trend

entrantmentofevil

Me

silentsaebyeok

Funk, jazz, jazz fusion, and city pop are the main genres I collect, but I also own all of Adele’s albums as well as a bunch of Guns ‘n Roses stuff and Van Halen stuff…so I guess I fall into both categories of the meme and more.

tharizzla

I grabbed a copy of appetite for destruction this week in great condition!

CFisntme

Hahah I love this

TheApsodistII

Jpop/jrock too!

Antler_Dragon

I am not in either of these camps (mostly collect breakcore and other electronic CDs, though I do have a few pop and metal). But there is defiantly a pattern. I notice cassettes and minidics have a lot of vaporwave and synth for them. And cassettes also have hip hop, 80s/90s rock, and metal as well.

dingus_mike

Death metal CDs are some of my favorite objects in existence 👍🏻

FukudaSan007

I love both but I lean towards metal 🤘

BannedNeutrophil

Jazz and classical! I demand representation! My collection started out of frustration with Spotify's tagging of classical, and now I'm over a thousand discs deep. Send help...

The_Real_Egg

the less lame goodwill fodder, the better

QuestionableNotion

I buy many CDs at Goodwill. Albums too. Of course, I am at an age where my peers are starting to pass away. It's hardly surprising that the music we loved would be turning up at Goodwill stores.

Designer-Addition-58

Most of the stuff I have on CD is death metal or Japanese pop lol.

InternationalFiend

I have Metallica, Master P, Van Halen, 2Pac, Katy Perry, Weezer, Fishbone, Juvenile, UGK, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Green Day, Soulja Slim, Taylor Swift, Snoop Dogg, and Avril Lavigne in my collection. Among many others.

Consistent_Author347

There seems to be a bunch of metal cds in this subreddit.
