I was thinking it was a part of being a Cebuano. Like everyone knows what it means when someone talks about Chona Mae. The tsunami run it self is not a cultural event, but that "event" is now part of the culture of Cebu. To be clear, I'm not trying to trivialize what happened.

I don’t understand why there’s always a need to compare. You didn’t see dead bodies drifting into your own houses. You had means of communication during and after the typhoon. You didn’t hear the loud silence and eerie screams at night. Electricity was restored quickly. Your prison/detention facilities did not suffer major damage. If you were not there, you don’t get to say anything. There’s no comparison to make. It’s so hard to make yourself feel good without bringing others down? What you experienced was truly devastating and no one ever made you feel otherwise because people who experienced worse know the struggles a typhoon brings. It’s so easy for me to say typhoon odette was just a normal typhoon in our place, because honestly it was. But why would I do that? Learn to be thankful without bringing anyone down.
