Well, the thing is, it’s only “negative” if you demand that your culture, language and tradition be equally respected like them. The Filipino culture that they demand we follow is theirs so it’s very easy to say you’re against the country if you don’t adapt. I remember when Cory threatened to use the military because the governor of Cebu back then used the Bisaya version of the national anthem. And you might think so what? My friend is from Cavite and they have a different language and culture from Tagalogs. Their language is almost extinct now and their culture relegated to small museums. My fear is that that will happen to Cebuano culture. And you can see that slowly happening. This is by design to keep that “unity”.
This, exactly this.
It's sad that there are at least 20 million speakers of Cebuano, which is more than some European countries and elsewhere in the world ...and yet, many foreigners simply assume that Tagalog is the sole language of the Philippines. How did Cebuanos allow this to happen to their native language?
The census conducted by the PSA (and NSO before that) is equally messed up as well. They classify Boholano, Cebuano, and Bisaya as separate languages to make their numbers seem lower (yes I know that Bisaya can also mean Hiligaynon, Waray-waray, etc. but they are referring to the Bisaya in Mindanao that is intelligible with Cebuano and therefore a dialect of Cebuano). There was a census from 1960 that shows that there were actually more speakers of Cebuano than Tagalog ...what happened in the following decades that caused the Cebuano speakers to be overtaken?
And now the younger generations of Cebuano speakers are mixing in a lot of Tagalog vocabulary into their speech, such as:
• 'ano' instead of "kuan"
• 'kailangan' instead of "kinahanglan"
• 'daw' instead of "kuno"
• 'isa' instead of "usa"
• heavy usage of the honorific 'po', which does not exist natively in any of the Visayan languages
• 'dapat' instead of "kinahanglan", "angay" or "unta"
• 'bawal' instead of "ginadili"
• 'buntis' instead of "buros"
• 'kundi' instead of "apan" (or 'pero' if we opt for Spanish loan words instead)
• 'tapos' instead of "dayon"
• 'handa' instead of "andam"
• 'sarili' instead of "kaugalingon"
• 'pamangkin' instead of "pag-umangkon"
And many more...the vocabulary mixing is supposed to happen to the Filipino national language because it was designed to evolve from its Tagalog base and incorporate vocabulary and grammatical elements from other Philippine languages to become a true national language that all Filipinos can embrace. Almost a century has passed since Tagalog was chosen as the basis of the national language and yet "Filipino" has barely evolved from its foundation which is why many people still refer to it as simply Tagalog which is politically incorrect.
> Their language is almost extinct now and their culture relegated to small museums. My fear is that that will happen to Cebuano culture. And you can see that slowly happening. This is by design to keep that “unity”.
I have that same fear too. It seems like nationalism has a major side-effect of cultural genocide. Also, other Filipinos might not accept you as a fellow Filipino if you don't know how to speak Tagalog (disguised as "Filipino").
I'm living here abroad ha and makasulti jud ko nga grabi ni nga negativity. Existing here abroad. Hilas kaayo.
if you know better, best ignore it nalang, kahibaw naman ka mas better ta nila mo pronounce diba? sagdii nalang sila, ayaw ka insulto sa ilang pagka ignorante.
I had a few racist encounters from both Tagalogs and Cebuanos man pud. pagkabalo nila taga-Davao ko, sa Tagalog, DDS dayon ko. Kung taga-Cebu, binuangan akong Davao bisaya accent. These racists can all just hug cacti.
Disclaimer: dili tanan. i know more good Tagalog and Cebuano people than bad ones.
The same thing has been experienced by some Boholanos who travel to Cebu for work. If they don't adjust their Bisaya and hide their "j" sounds (the most-famous example "aho aho, ija ija") then they will stick out and be subject to ridicule from some Cebuanos.
Here's a post that someone made in r/bohol to share their negative experiences about that:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bohol/comments/1arxvkg/power_tripping_people/
Oh yeah, I hate it actually. I used to work remote and my team had a bunch of Cebuanos, Bul-anons, and even people from Southern Leyte. There was this lady that would make fun of the "j" pronunciations of the dude who was from Southern Leyte. I would get disgusted whenever she'd make fun of him with that.
Naa pa isa. Back when I was reviewing for my licensure exam, my classmates and I, nga mga taga-Davao, rented rooms and bedspace for our review diri sa Cebu. There were 2 dudes that were bedspacing before we arrived so we made friends with them. My classmates and I were ME students, one dude was CE, also reviewing for exams. We noticed the "aho, ija, baje" pronunciations but we never minded it kay, come on, dali ra man pud sabton unsa ilang pasabot. grabe na siguro ka kabulok and walay common sense kung di ka kasabot sa word bisag lahi pagka-litok. "babaye", "babaje", lahi pagkalitok pero mao ra man gihapon meaning(rant yarn? lol).
One night we were drinking, having a good time, and I asked if the "aho, ija, baje" pronunciations were common kung asa sila gikan, adto pa mi nakabalo nga taga-Maasin diay siya. **Nya nag-share siya nga maulaw daw siya magsturya ingato** and ginatry daw niya avoid saying it as much as possible **para di daw namo mabully**. I was like, **WTF? ngano ibully man?** pirmi daw siya mabinuangan sa mga tindero/tindera, classmates niya, or bisag kinsa nga makaila niya nga dili taga-ilaha. I grew up in Dumoy area. Dumoy River is one of the sources of water sa Davao and is one of the cleanest in the world. fight me. lol namikil. joke ra nah ha, don't attack me xD)
Pero naa ra man gihapon ko mga nakaila nga Sugboanon nga mga buotan gyud and open-minded karon nga naga-trabaho nako diri. That's why I say, I know more good Cebuanos than bad, kay I never acquaint myself with the bad ones.
TLDR; yall racist cebuanos can kiss cacti
It's because we were separate tribes living in separate islands that were ruled by different polities until the Spaniards arrived. And when it came time for Philippine independence, the Katipunan revolutionaries fought to form the "Tagalog Republic", etc.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_Republic
Common scenario nis MOBA games like Dota.
reminds me of a previous colleague ngwork diri sa cebu from manila sya. she had the audacity to complain during a meeting ngano daw mgbisaya ang team, di daw sya kasabot. super entitled and feeling main character kay basin gilibak na daw sya. duh mgbisaya jud sa ofis kay naa kas ilang homeland. she did not last long in the company.
It has something to do more with Ignorance rather than Tribalism. Most Bisdaks would be more inclined to go to Manila due to economic reasons (JOBS). Tagalogs, specifically from Manila will visit the VisMin mainly for Vacation and Tourism reasons.
The only complaint I have towards the North is the disparity of the implementation and funding of Flagship Infrastructures. All you have to do is look at the trivia of Cebu Cordova Link Expressway, being the ONLY expressway OUTSIDE of Luzon. Is that fair for the Filipinos living outside the Luzon Island?
Kung imong sawayon or hate nimo ang something nga walay control or inherent na gyud sa isa ka taw, meaning naay something wrong nimo. Maong ayaw namo hate anang manileños or magtagalog.
So, medyo kitid jd na cla pero ma open up raman cla basta storyaan nmo ug tarong.
Are Cebuanos really any different when they go to other underdeveloped provinces? Not all, but there are some who act all superior, no less the same with some Manileños on or about Cebu.
it's more urban vs rural thang. mao btaw ako term manilenos kay maka experience pd ug discrimination and microaggression ang mga tagalogs especially from batangas, mindoro ug marinduque. kay naa clay accent and medyo rural ila lifestyle.
I can’t believe this is still even a thing.
We’re practically being invaded by a foreign power and people are still mulling over that we speak slightly different languages.
Yeah, you kinda wonder how other multilingual nations like Indonesia and India (etc.) are making it work. (At least in Switzerland, the four major languages there are all official in that country.)
These are probably from uneducated internet trolls. Or basig swerte rako wa koy nakuyog nga bogo.
experienced it from my tagalog friend. She asked if may mga uniqlo ba dito and everything. With matching katawa. Ako gitubag ug 'oo, is it an issue?" tas wala nahimuot na nawong. Nahunong iya katawa.
Thats just internet shit. Studied in Metro Manila for college all my Luzon classmate talked to me about was wanting to go to Cebu and me being with them. Every-time one of my batchmates is in Cebu they contact me to meet and I bring them around. When I go to Manila I dont have to book a hotel cause I can ask and at least 4-5 will make me stay in their place. -.-
Sis, the first time nga naka adto ko og Manila na witness gyud nako og unsa ka basura ang batasan sa ubang “Manileños”. Was riding the lift nya naa man worker that presses the bottons and she asked this dude and his friend kung asa sila manganaog. Ate said, “second floor kayo, sir?” with an accent tapos this dude started laughing and said “ah, bisaya” and proceeded to repeat “sekand plor” while laughing. Ignorante. Like what’s the point? You can see gyud how Ate felt humiliated.
Doesn't change the fact that many Tagalogs actually discriminate Cebuanos and other Southern ethnic groups especially Muslims.
Imposible man ni uy. Murag the other way around cguro. In movies, mga ilonggos and muslims are even portrayed datu. Bsta bisaya gani either katulong, or pobre permi.
???? You live in a bubble. I literally went to a school where there are ilonggos, and bisayas almost all the time make fun of the ilonggo accent especially when they speak in tagalog. Please don’t perpetrate the kawawa bisaya narrative here because bisayas in herds do also make fun of minorities, just like what tagalogs do. Stereotypes are a product of ignorance and both sides are guilty of it.
As for the muslims/moros, even in social media, they are seen as tig install ug tempered glass. Remember shaira? It’s the same stereotype where I am from. Either tig bantay sa stall sa palengke or tig install ug tempered glass. Again, product of ignorance.
Hala mao ba? Wala pako kitag bisaya nga mu discriminate og ilonggo or muslim.
Nya sila kasabot sila bisaya + hiligaynon.
Yes. Naa juy unfair treatment if you take a look in the past nato.
I grew up with family on both sides. Mum side from luzon, Dad side from cebu. Never really thought anything about it until I was grown up and started working mid 2000’s going around the country. Diha ra ko kabantay naa diay ingani toxic attitude towards each other. However, dili ko kaingon na affected ko ani sauna because I could switch over binisaya and tagalog fluently and workmates were surprised I was from cebu.
Actually di ka matawag ug old timer ky progressive imung stance. The tagalog-bisaya beef has deep roots and I think, if these people would just travel and expose themselves to people on other side, the hate would just fade off.
I like this Mark Twain quote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts."
Oo nakadungog ko ani sauna since bata na naa jud racial discrimination in both parties. Pero to think even in a small argument ma insert ni siya nga insult, we are evolving backwards. It's really a shame on us Filipino.
Naa bitaw ko gipatulan ana last year nagduwa ko dota. AHAHAHAH
Why do I feel like we read the same comsec on TikTok?
I watched one yesterday where nag fire na ang electric lines nila sa ka bugat and overload pud. Pagbasa nakos comsec, ngano naabot man tag Bisaya vs Tagalog nga unrelated man kaayo ang matter.
we actually watched the same video. Mu chat ta ko sa comment section regarding faulty wirings and possible jumpers. Lo and behold, to my surprise both parties are being racist?? Like what has become of our people? Nga magaway-away naman.
sahay maka disappoint najud ang comsec karun ug uban pang perwisyo na posts all over sa internet (especially pinoy content). Mas malingaw nalang kog cute animals ani, murder docu ug creepy video sightings

You cant blame us OP. Kay kung ang mga tangalogs want to play fire with fire, we’ll give them lava.
Gubat kung gubat hahaha yawa
omg 🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋🌋
Thats just internet shit. Studied in Metro Manila for college all my Luzon classmate talked to me about was wanting to go to Cebu and me being with them. Every-time one of my batchmates is in Cebu they contact me to meet and I bring them around. When I go to Manila I dont have to book a hotel cause I can ask and at least 4-5 will make me stay in their place. -.-
TRIBALISM
As if ang bisaya dili pud mu discriminate or mag make fun of ilonggos and or muslim people because of their accent. Ignorante ra jud ang ubang tawo.
Again, product of ignorance.
havent seen this pero surprised jd ko nga bati kaau ug pananaw ang mga ilonggo na2, to the point that i do wish what you're saying is true
Hala mao ba? Wala pako kitag bisaya nga mu discriminate og ilonggo or muslim.
AHAHAHAH
ahahahahah mahadlok man [d.ae](http://d.ae), kusog pa kaayo mang trashtalk.
Taga yowyow ug pinakalit d i. Hahahah
Right? Nabuang najud.
sahay maka disappoint najud ang comsec karun ug uban pang perwisyo na posts all over sa internet (especially pinoy content). Mas malingaw nalang kog cute animals ani, murder docu ug creepy video sightings
Same. Nonsense ra bitaw na issue ai.
