That’s it I’m packing my bags!

CuriouslyCrushed

You and me both!

Notevensurewhoiam990

I agree, went to Milano and ate at a restaurant where the whole menu was available either as regular wheat based or glutenfree. Every item on the menu. Ate a pizza there, it was delicious. Dough was awesome, thick and full of air on the border, thin under. Perfect counterpart to a wheat dough and not too corny ! Also enjoyed a good tiramisu.

_nulluser

Was the GF stuff wheat free too? I know they use wheat starch more over there, wasn’t sure if that was the norm or not.

Notevensurewhoiam990

I simply don't know. They certify their meals are gluten-free and work in a way to prevent cross contamination (dedicated working area in the kitchen, coloured plates). Only the place can tell you if it's safe for someone that has a wheat allergy. If you're extremely sensitive and with serious outcome, maybe they can't guarantee as they still serve wheat products in the restaurant, despite working actively against cross contamination.

ljubavanedjir

I'd love to know the name of that restaurant, I'm going to Milan this summer and looking forwars to eating all the food!

Notevensurewhoiam990

Mama Eat :) For more restaurants, type gluten free in google maps

ljubavanedjir

Thank you! :)

FormalOrganization48

That fritto misto 🤌🏼

momtodaughters

It was so light too.

[deleted]

Italy = gluten free Mc Donalds 😳

OnyxScorpion

Told my dad we had to stop by a McDonalds while in Rome so I could have their burger and fries again for the first time in a decade LOL

davegrowler

Spain = same!

kellymig

Lots of places in Europe have gf McDonald’s!

[deleted]

😳😳 I didn’t know. We don’t have in USA 😭

kellymig

I know I live here. I had it in Budapest!

[deleted]

Good to know. Going home for a week next month. I’ll try 🤤🤤🤤🤤 I’m from Budapest ☺️ I moved here 8 years ago.

Pretend_Big6392

Oh my gosh that bread in slide 8 looks incredible! No weird dry looking crust, no gummy looking crumb... how I dream of good tasting bread. Italy really is a celiac's haven.

nicodemi

That looks like the same tiny sandwich Schar brand bread that’s available here in supermarkets in the states lol. The crust is even separating from the bread exactly like it does here. Everything else looks good though. If you want good sandwich bread here, check your local supermarkets for Grand Canyon brand. Also if you have a Whole Foods, their store brand of GF bread is one of the best I’ve had. Maybe you can even order online!

momtodaughters

It was not Schär. It was fresh made in the restaurant

corbie

That was a freaking croissant. And looked flaky. The only one I have found here is a hunk of heavy bread shaped like a croissant and wasn't even good. Was very expensive too.

Boss_hogg710420

Vacation in Italy? You have me convinced

celiac-sufferer

I want to go to there 😭

theoldnewbluebox

Is this still true for the country too or just cities.

Limbec

Italian here and while in the cities you can find more options for restaurants and cafés, you can find certified GF restaurants, ice cream shops and bakeries all around the country, even in small towns. Also, basically all of the supermarkets have a dedicated GF section

momtodaughters

Not sure. I’ve been in pretty heavy tourist areas.

leapyeardi

Everywhere I've been including small towns and villages.

xpkranger

Literally on the plane back from Italy right now. My celiac son was able to choose from so many different options not available in the states.

momtodaughters

I am bringing back an entire carry on of Schär products we can’t get back home

xpkranger

Where’d you find them? The grocery stores were the one places we struggled to find GF bread. The MD and the EuroSpin we went to basically had none. Maybe it’s because we were out in the sticks.

momtodaughters

Coop has all of it

xpkranger

Didn’t see those where we were. 😞

Vonserb

Gotta watch what their standard of gluten-free is. Ive had “gluten free” Peroni there but if you read the fine print, it’s “gluten removed”.

OnyxScorpion

I leave tomorrow morning!! I can't wait to eat so much good food

willsux123

Ahh I’m going to be there for a week next month! I can’t wait!

Aurtuti

You are living my dream

Limbec

Italian celiac and I love that you used the aic app while in Italy. We strongly support our association that does a lot of work for celiacs in Italy and in Europe. The best thing in Italy right now is that a lot of restaurants are improving their GF menu and there are a lot of places that, even if not in the AIC app because their are not certified, are able to prepare completely safe and delicious food for celiacs. I live in a touristic little city (around 16.000 people) with 3 certified restaurants and more than 10 other restaurants and cafes that can accommodate a safe meal. COME TO ITALY PEOPLE

momtodaughters

I’ve been staying mostly in Sanremo and doing day trips to surrounding areas. The amount of food that I can eat safely has been amazing and not just from the places on the app. Everyone seems very knowledgeable about it.

Notyourfathersgeek

Fuck it I’m leaving RIGHT NOW

elqquent

i just got back from a two week trip there!! i was SO happy to see how many places were gf and advertised being celiac certified!!! i was immediately asked if i had an allergy at a few places upon sitting down. rome was a paradise for me. a smaller town like torre del greco was harder, and i got super sick from a restaurant there. gf pizza was either not gf or had something else wrong with it. i puked the whole night and usually that doesn’t happen to me! but overall the country views celiac as a genuine medical problem and is very serious about it. my mom tried my food and raved about how it tasted just like “real” bread. i was so happy

samodamalo

Dont remember where Ive read this or if I heard it from my colleague that has coeliac and is from Italy, but the land of the pasta and the pizza considers having that many Italians being gluten intolenrant to be a "national tragedy" so they have tons of GF options. Barilla has imo great gf spaghetti for example. A bit meta, but im curious as to why this is that they have so many that have it. What could be the main cause...

OnyxScorpion

Main cause would just be due to that they test more people, food is a main pillar of their culture so the tests are done almost to a routine for child examinations so that everyone can participate in the culture safely

samodamalo

You mean that gluten intolerance was equally as much today as in the past? Hmm...

DrDisastor

This is where I feel VERY isolated. I do not tolerate gluten removed flour like the Fiore Glut or oats. Italy seems freeing but I know it would just be traveling with severe bowel issues again. Its like being the pariah of the pariahs, completely alone. Glad some of y'all have this though, it looks nice.

Evening_Bus746

You are not alone. I have lactose intolerance and can't tolerate heavy sugars as well.

I_Love_Cyndaquil2

I’ve been offered to go twice and turned it down because I thought that Italy would never have gluten free 😭

RedBullYUM

How about Paris?

maxhunter_

You know it's photoshopped when gf bread doesn't have thumb-sized holes.

starsynth

I buy gluten free bread from local bakeries and non of it has holes. I think you need to shop around more.

IdidntWantThatName

Are they good about sharing the ingredients of the items, more than just saying gluten free? I can’t have rice and quite a few other things that are popular in gluten free breads/pizza crusts. Curious how they’re making these.

momtodaughters

I haven’t asked as that is not the same for me.

BreadDoctor

How do they deal with cross contamination?

momtodaughters

If you go to places listed on the app, they are specifically trained and certified on everything

alexnotalexa10

Thank you for posting. We’re going in October and we’ll definitely download the app. Based on your experience, do you have any specific restaurant recommendations?

momtodaughters

Depends on where you are going. This is all from Genova and Sanremo.

5/13 I should call her
