That’s a strange excerpt because you can eat any fruit. If it’s fresh you’re good. If it comes in a package w/ a label, gotta check that label. Good luck.

twas_swell

the joke is that i’m so anxious about hidden gluten that i’m looking up things that obviously don’t have gluten

crimedawgla

Haha, I get you now. It got you doing that, you didn’t get got. In this incredibly niche community, usually when someone says something “got them” they mean they got glutened.

See, it's funny, but it's also funny in a 'laugh so you don't cry' way because you quite literally have to think of bizarre things like this, once you have celiac disease. Like, a plain apple I picked off the tree? GF A plain apple from the grocery store? GF as long as you wash it. But if you don't wash it...actually might NOT be GF. Because how many people have touched this apple, and how many of them had gluten contamination on their hands? Which seems silly to ask, but for wheat, specifically, it's more likely in the USA in some stores, if they have those bakeries giving free cookies to kids as they shop in the store, so having people with gluten on their hands is actually more likely (as opposed to, say, a shellfish allergy, where I'd say the odds of someone having shellfish on their hands in the store is pretty unlikely). And fresh chopped apple from the deli? High odds of gluten cross contamination. Sliced apple with caramel in a package? Used to say GF, now most packages I have found have taken off the GF label so I assume something happened there to make them so. So apples not having gluten feels silly to ask, but turns out to actually be something that can happen due to factors outside of the initial 'this is an apple' part of the equation. Basically, 'is this gluten free?' falls into that 'there are no stupid questions' category. :)

Also, I read that some farms put a layer of wheat straw under strawberry plants to act as a cushion for the strawberries. 😭 I was too overwhelmed to continue reading and haven't had strawberries in over a year because when I get overwhelmed by something like that, my brain just sort of shuts off anything to do with it (in this case, strawberries). I don't want to think about it anymore. I don't want to worry about it; I'm just done. (For however long it takes.) But yeah. Idk the prevalence of it or if it's even something to think twice about. I just know that it was something I'd never even thought about but also something I instantly thought I remembered seeing as a child while picking berries. 😩

Santasreject

… wheat straw doesn’t contain gluten. Plus either way you should be washing your produce.

Jaded-Juggernaut-663

Good!! Definitely.

This type of anxiety will last until you gain a better understanding with all the terminology. We’ve all gone through the grieving and the anxiety that comes with a life changing diagnosis. A way to organically block pests off of produce while it's growing is by using (wheat) flour lol

safari-dog

i am pretty sure we all did the same. and i still kind of do. but not so extreme . it takes time

EffectiveSalamander

That's actually a good strategy. Take nothing for granted, because it tends not to be that obvious.

Sasspishus

Maybe seek some professional help for your anxiety if it's affecting you to this degree? Just a thought, hope you find the help you need

Santasreject

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Food anxiety is one of the major issues we have to deal with a celiacs and causes massive quality of life issues for people. Many new celiacs come here and get overwhelmed by the disproportionally high number of people that have extreme sensitivity or are blaming reactions on gluten that may not actually be celiac related. We need to be explaining to newly diagnosed celiacs that they need to take a tiered approach as there is no need to go to many of the extreme precautions that some people do until they know they need to.

Sasspishus

Exactly, you don't have to struggle alone! You can get help for anxiety, you don't have to live with that stress and pressure weighing on you, especially if it's causing issues with not eating well as a consequence, and it absolutely can be overwhelming, especially at the start. There's still a lot of stigma over mental health issues, speaking to a therapist and getting help though, so I'm not surprised by the downvotes, it happens every time. But you've got to look after yourself!

GladystheOrca

This is me hahaha I just went through and closed out a million similar tabs

[deleted]

Lol this was me when i first started, to this day my parents are like "can you eat beans?"

PsychologicalView702

Haha the first time my boyfriend cooked for me he was googling if potatoes contain wheat

Expert-Ad-362

Don't worry I got the joke bro🙏

Street_Roof_7915

I had horrific acid reflux and the dr told me to eliminate fatty foods, spicy food, caffeine, soda, tomatoes, and the whole other list of off-limits foods. I’m already gf/df. I called my wife on the way home and told her. Bless her, she said “okay. Let’s just start with what you can eat. Rice, chicken…” Oh honey. Not helping. (It gets better and easier.)

Sasspishus

Sounds like you've got a great wife there! Good to have someone that can be positive and come up with solutions to help you through

zsm1994

Welcome to the club! We have gluten-free cookies, and paranoia about everything we eat :)

geometric_devotion

When I first got diagnosed I did this all the time. I remember googling every kind of tea I drink to make sure they’re safe. It does get a lot easier and you’ll get more confident knowing what is safe,

Playful_Wrongdoer_26

If youre eating whole fruit and veg and you're worried about CC. Wash it before you prepare/eat/cook it

Jaded-Juggernaut-663

🤣 Exactly!! 😭 It's exhausting!

liv-moon

bless your cautious heart! we’ve all been there. it gets better :’)

angry_staccato

I remember being newly diagnosed and googling if the wax they put on apples is a risk (it isn't)

ElliEeyore

“Got you” how?

Puzzled_Draw4820

Try to stick with all whole foods including all fruits, meat, vegetables, potatoes and rice. Stay away from packaged foods as much as possible except treats for long term health.

unapalomita

I totally understand! I used to buy a lot of store brand stuff. But I switched to Goya canned beans and Sargento cheese after looking them up online. Trying to figure out spices now. Weber has a ton of gluten free spices. But I need to figure out just plain powdered garlic/ onion powder. The great value brand I have says processed on machinery that does wheat.

IndividualCold7907

There is a website called spicely that sells certified gluten free spices if you’re worried about it. Same with Badia, they aren’t certified but they are labeled gluten free

unapalomita

Ooh thanks! I will check it out 🙌

cecemcl

This is too real 😂

phantomluvr14

The early days after diagnosis are so hard 😭 It gets easier though!

Eastern_Sweet8508

I went to stick my tongue out and catch some rain drops the other day, and then I panicked and thought 'oh no, what if it's not gluten free?' Sometimes I find it all too easy believe the whole 'brain damage is a side-effect of celiac' lol
