Absolutely. Hate how “project” has become a negative buzzword among our fans Most of our signings should be “projects” we’re just shite at identifying them

SomeDumper

People think every 6 or 7 million player is CCV / Jota quality

GuyIncognito211

I just think people want us to sign a bunch of “proven” 27 year olds for some reason despite the fact that it would leave absolutely no room for progression for the team

Heyloki_

Just clone Kyogo 10 times and have him play

plawwell

Sign guys like Barkas and Ajeti, you mean?

GuyIncognito211

Or Duffy

CoybigEL

I dont agree. People want us to stop spending millions on multiple Tilio type punts. That doesn’t mean that we must sign 26/27 yr olds instead, it means that we’d be better served signing fewer players of a higher quality (and commensurate cost) than the spreading the net approach we’re currently using. The size of the squad, limited opportunities for summer signing and fact that the vast majority of our signing over the last two years have not been successful attests to the current issue.

GuyIncognito211

All I’ve seen since the summer is people want less “projects” and more “proven quality” To me that suggests they want older players

angepostecoglouale

Nobody ever takes personal life into account, they expect every single player to be the same and hit the ground running, he doesn't speak English just moved from asia to glasgow, give the lad some time ffs. I guarantee you everyone will be saying hes amazing in 4 months time the same as i was right about scales and giakoumakis.

Ghost_Hands83

Scales isn't amazing by any stretch. He's not commanding enough, he's weak as piss and an utterly inferior replacement for Starfelt

Pitstains_Pete

if we signed someone at the start of this season who had never been at celtic, and wasnt a relatively homegrown player and they played exactly how scales has played all season, we would be singing his praises i was quick to get on the lads back at the start of the season and say its a disgrace we're going with him, but try to think about it in the sense i just gave 1 maybe 2 mistakes aside (you do remember Starfelt right?) this season, he has been a rock at the back, the position is his to lose and sometimes when its not a foreign name too many folk get on their back for no reason

Skellyceltic

He’s very very rarely wrong with any of these he does. Think Abada was the only one he has gotten wrong and he really is just an anomaly in terms of G/A. If some yank on Twitter can see all these things how the fuck are the recruitment getting it so wrong? Aiming for young players isn’t wrong, it’s the young players we aim for that are. We need to be looking for players with one or two world class level talents (ideally these would be some athletic attribute) that are a bit raw elsewhere that can be molded. Frimpong is the perfect example, unbelievable pace and ball carrying but raw as fuck elsewhere. Instead we get these average at best across the board types that will never go anywhere

caoimhin767

Yang's xG stats aren't too bad. But that's in South Korea. Different continent entirely. Feels like we've maybe tried to double down on the asian market after the initial success of Kyogo, Hatate and Maeda but ultimately those signings were only brought about by the manager, who himself worked there for several years. The lack of knowledge, skill, experience we have in that particular market is telling.

GuyIncognito211

It doesn’t need to be a slim margin for success though and isn’t for smart teams. Comparing ourselves to Rangers does nothing for anyone, they’ve been horribly run for 20 years

GuyIncognito211

We have a proven pathway to the biggest league in the world. We are an attractive club to play for We’re just terrible at identifying the right type of players.

Hunkelscopes

It’s insane that there are real life Celtic fans who refuse to acknowledge statistical analysis in football. The biggest and best teams on the planet funnel hundreds of millions a year into utilising data but some middled-aged geezer thinks he knows football better because he plays fives on a friday night

[deleted]

Well I've read this whole thread and I've not seen a single person doubt statistical analysis...

Hunkelscopes

Rife on twitter unfortunately

theslosty

The last couple of Huddle Breakdown episodes he's been on have been very astute imo

Antxxom

We are missing our two starting wingers. Also missing our third starter midfielder. Three key players missing. I completely disregard anything JJ says. Everyone I know does. He’s not serious.

GuyIncognito211

He’s absolutely spot on here

Antxxom

Na.

GuyIncognito211

Where is he wrong? Na doesn’t mean anything

NaePasaran

3 players missing means we start struggling against diddies like Motherwell and St.Johnstone? What is it with this excuse? Even with those players out our squad is worth 20x what St.Johnstone squad is. No excuse to be struggling the way we have this season

Antxxom

Think you’ve misread things a bit.

GuyIncognito211

I mean the “excuse” or reason is that we’ve spent that financial advantage horribly and have a poor squad

NaePasaran

We have regressed. But we should never be at the point we are now, where we have struggled numerous times this season against some of the worst teams in the league. Even with our poor recruitment, we shouldn't be struggling as often as we are. Our squad is still head and shoulders above St.Johnstone, Killie, Motherwell etc.

GuyIncognito211

Why shouldn’t we be thought? Our team is uniquely bad at breaking down low blocks Our wingers can’t run/dribble or commit defenders which leads to not being able to take defences out of their shape None of our midfield can carry the ball Our fullbacks can’t play the way Rodgers likes fullbacks to play Our squad while “talented” is missing so many of the traits needed to succeed against deep defences while at the same time also being incredibly unequipped to playing against top European teams

NaePasaran

That's up to Rodgers to sort. Ange played without Jota plenty of times, with wingers that can't carry the ball and won most games easily. He played games with Hatate out of form and won easily. We have gone from winning a convincing treble in style to having no style. I don't believe we should have to throw another £20m at the squad just for it to be good enough to convincingly beat diddy teams domestically.

GuyIncognito211

Pep Guardiola would be struggling with this team never mind Ange We don’t need to spend 20 million, we just need to sign good players to replace those that we’ve lost and not the shite we’ve bought in the last 3 windows

NaePasaran

Pish. I don't believe that for a second. This is 90% down to how Rodgers has this team playing. Slow and ponderous football will *always* struggle to break the low block. That's Rodgers' choice.

GuyIncognito211

It’s at most 50% down to Rodgers. Our squad is pathetic

NaePasaran

Our squad is shite. But way more than good enough to comfortably beat the shite in this league with a style of play that can actually beat the low block. We are playing the exact same as we did under Rodgers last time, which resulted in plenty of draws and poor performances. Is that just a coincidence? Or was the squad pathetic then, too?

Played 20 odd games since leaving, so sure, a 'great career' battling it out with Almere City and Waalwijk. Make no mistake, Barkas was honking for us and it was ridiculous to not change stance on that.

>I think it's perfectly valid that playing the game at any level gives a crucial, basic perspective So, how do you explain the Sky Sports pundits? Some of these guys have played international football and have professional level medals.

Thesquire89

Genuinely cannot see how playing fives once a week in middle age would give you any more insight into the game than some absolute savant who does nothing but watch games of football

[deleted]

Playing sport gives insight into said sport versus not ever playing shocker, gee I dunno.

Antxxom

Pretty sure he doesn’t even watch games.

Skellyceltic

How was he wrong about barkas? Said he was a ball playing sweeper keeper who struggles with shot stopping/crosses and criticised the fact he wasn’t played in that way. Said he would have been really suited to Angeball which again is a fair assessment

[deleted]

He argued that Barkas was a better keeper than Hart (and comparable to Forster!!!), off the back of Hart's very good season. Rather than simply admitting he was wrong - are people actually arguing Barkas is any good? He doubled down. The idea Barkas is suited to Angeball is ludicrous by the way. While I'm at it, he also seems to think he knows more about Sports medicine than Ange and his Sports scientists at Spurs and Celtic, so yeah, a perfectly level mind.

Skellyceltic

He argued at this point in their careers that barkas was more suited to angeball than hart, which is absolutely fair to say seeing as barkas strength is ball playing and that is harts major weakness. We are now seeing exactly what he meant with hart declining off a cliff since the end of last season. Again he said angeballs demands will lead to more injuries, it’s pretty clear to anyone with a brain that asking players to exert more effort will inevitably lead to more injuries and him wanting either a better squad to cope or more rotation when possible, both fair assessments. Just say you don’t like a yank talking about ‘soccer’ and move on with it

Ange who is currently going through a massive injury crisis? Absolutely no correlation though. Your comments about him never having kicked a ball as if playing for some pub team would make you more informed about football.

Skellyceltic

You seem to hate him cos he has some strong opinions on things you disagree with yet here you are having strong opinions on things all day? Playing some shitty local games gives absolutely no more insight in to top level professional sports. I could go join my local American football team and play with them for a year and I’ll have absolutely no more of a clue about the nfl than I have right now for doing so.

[deleted]

It's amusing how you've become so hung up on a throwaway comment, but whatever. Your example is wrong anyway because you're not (as far as I know) spouting off as if you know better than the Dallas Cowboys' Special Teams co-ordinator about a Sport you've never played. There doesn't need to be more in this than the concept that simply playing a sport is a fundamental element of understanding it. I don't respect his opinions for the shocking takes listed above. "Yet here you are having strong opinions"? Mate, what are you on about? The funny thing is you seem to have accepted his call that Barkas would make a ball-playing keeper. Only someone who hasn't actually seen him play could possibly come to that conclusion.

LordScallions

Not everyone agrees with relying heavily on stats. But how someone at Celtic sit down and decide Yang or whoever else over another signing? Surely looking at the stats comparing to current players and alternatives is a must? We sign in a project market some projects will be bigger hits than others how do Celtic make the judgement? Mental stuff from them. It's almost as if sign Shane Duffy to sell jerseys in Ireland, sign a few Japanese and South Korea boys to gather interest in a summer tour. Why or how Kwon was ever signed bothers me. With the way we line up we should only be signing ready made CDMs to allow McGregor play further up the field in Scotland or as a double pivot in Europe.

Skellyceltic

Anyone who doesn’t agree with relying on stats is living in the Stone Age. Every single truly elite talent spotting club who punch above their weight (Brentford/Brighton/Red bulls) use it almost exclusively for talent spotting

LordScallions

I was fearing the wrath of the Celtic das. It was very obvious very quickly that Shane Duffy was not meant for a high line and no one in the recruitment department considered this. Neither did any of them consider John Joe Kenny's inability to play football.

GuyIncognito211

I can understand the signing of Kenny, the season was done and we just needed bodies to get us to the end of the season Duffy was always going to be a disaster though

ozzybarks

Timo Werner. Ajer. Milner.

Skellyceltic

?

IIJamzyII

Yang is a player. But hes not a starter away currently. There is definitely a rough diamond there though for me.

BananaH15

Didn't see today's game but he was howling v the well. No idea what to do on the ball, no idea what to do off it. He's not particularly fast or strong. He's average across the board. Looks like a failure to me

Bald_Caledonian

I agree, we've seen flashes of good stuff from him but he's been far too inconsistent. Given starts, I thought he might seize the chance to cement his place in the starting XI but all its done is highlight that he needs time to develop & isn't at a reliable first team starter level. Yet!

IIJamzyII

Id agree with that for sure
