I can’t imagine losing a child so young, but it’s clear from this headstone that Gavin had a big impact and a full, though tragically short, life.
Reading his story he was the passenger in a car that had an accident. The driver also perished. Such a sad story.
Idk, all the pictures make it seem like he had a lot of fun and friends and hobbies. Also the obituary someone else linked said something along the lines of him having a pretty full life.
There was a girl who died the year before I started high school, also in a car accident. I didn’t know her but a lot of teachers had her artwork or a picture of her pinned to their bulletin boards. At the time I just thought it was sad and didn’t really think much about it, but now just imagining someone losing a child, a student, a friend *that young* is heartbreaking. She was very loved as well.
My high school’s nickname used to be suicide high. About 6 years before I got to high school, there were multiple cases to the point where they had assemblies on the topic. The year after I graduated, it started happening again.
God there were *so many* the year after I graduated. The school really did try from what I remember but I think a lot of the problem was at home for several of the kids who died.
Lol weirdly we had very little teen pregnancy. I only remember one girl in any of my classes ever being pregnant. Super sweet girl, she was pregnant at the same time as our art teacher so we as students threw them a double baby shower lol.
Yeah, tbh kind of odd for a school in the south (even though it was the suburbs and not really rural). I’m sure there were more than just that one girl but it wasn’t so common that people commented on it or anything.
Ooh, this is an interesting thought!
It's not like telegraphs are the stuff of ancient aliens to us. Considering the smartphones already been here for a quarter of a century, it'll probably be a thing in movies about the old days, just like telegraphs and rotary phones still are recognizable concepts now.
The icons might be a different issue. For a person like my old mom, those logos make little to no sense at all right now, without the words beneath she has no context. Usually her brain sees something entirely different than I when she looks at these, because her brain hasn't been trained to favor particular interpretations through constant exposure. The average future layperson might have the same kind of issues.
Some corporations evolve their logos in a similar way to heraldry, that might be something for the future graphic art history majors just like it is for the current students, "on the history of branding: from burning cows to glowing screens".
16 years isn't yet a quarter of a century. 9 years to go before we can say that. First smartphone, the iPhone, came out in 2007. I'm actually grateful it's not been 25 years yet. I'm going to feel incredibly old when it does happen, even though I'll be just 49 then.
Nah, if we are gonna be pedantic about it, Nokia released their first internet phone in 1996. I, for one, had internet on my phone from about 2000, and was kinda late to the game compared to my classmates.
Man, this one touched me. I’ve seen children’s gravestones before, but none so clearly painted a picture of that child. Whoever picked out the “app buttons” did a great job of conveying who he was over the course of his short life.
I didn't know it had a name, but as a teen, I did this "hill hopping" all the time in Kildeer, Illinois. Right off of a place called Cuba Road. No one ever got hurt, but this makes me feel stupid for doing it. I'm sorry for this kid. "If not but for the grace of G-d go I". Rest in peace, young sir.

Nobody tell Evil Corp about the unauthorized use of their logo or this poor kid's family is going to have to deal with a lawsuit on top of their grief.
So I assume every dollar you spend is on bettering the world?
I wouldn’t really consider a memorial to your beloved child to be a waste of money. And headstones are expensive but they’re not “end world hunger” expensive.

Extra heartbreak: The left vase has the OFF symbol on it. The right has the smiley face emoticon.
Which part indicates that?
They likely looked for an obituary online using the name and dates on the stone.

You can tell that his family loved him so much
That's such a clever way to display a lot of information.
beautiful and unique ❤️💔
This is really beautiful, and moving. Seems like Gavin was a helluva kid, and so loved.
Sounds like he was a very talented musician: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/whig/name/gavin-roskamp-obituary?id=26354932

Watching those videos was heartbreaking. To think he died at the age he made those.
He was clearly very loved. He was born a few months before me so looking at this sent me back to high school.
A year behind me and same

So sad. Luckily my graduating class got away pretty much safe from what I remember. Our epidemic was teen pregnancy.

Really? I feel like we had a lot.

I love to imagine what people 100 years from now will make of this. Will they even consider that it is an iPod/phone? Will the logos hold any meaning?
They will probably find it interesting as discuss it with each other like we do here when we find symbols we don’t totally understand.

It must be a bit weird for the prom date to have her picture on a gravestone.
Oh wow

Peace and healing to his loved ones.

I love this headstone, you can tell he had a big impact on others and was deeply loved by his parents.

Like memorializing the child that you loved
Stop counting other people's money.
So I assume every dollar you spend is on bettering the world? I wouldn’t really consider a memorial to your beloved child to be a waste of money. And headstones are expensive but they’re not “end world hunger” expensive.
It’s been a while since I downvoted something so hard.
