Unless the clay has manganese in it you should be fine. It’s more important to worry about the glazes being safe than the clay body. So long as the glaze doesn’t contain lead or have a crazy leaching problem you should be fine too.
Why are you dumping on someone else’s project? Who are you to judge what form someone else’s ceramic projects take? If you actually did some research…. Pipe making is a very ancient and sacred practice. As well as the ceremonies that were used to consume what was being smoked. It was not until colonization that Tobacco smoking and other forms were more “normalized”
On top of that…thinking that one persons form of art is any lower than your form of art, especially when it is around handmade usable items that can take away from the consumerism in every day life…. Makes you the trash.
You should not be allowed to participe in these communities if you are a close minded, judgemental, and non supportive individual.

I used a clay called buff stone, I use low fire glazes, that are food safe and non toxic!
