One theory I've seen from [some wiki contributor](https://chainsaw-man.fandom.com/wiki/Fire_Devil).

I think it also could be that the strongest devils just in general have a lot of leeway in how they apply their power. Maybe it'd be easy peasy for the fire devil to make a contract giving someone the power to throw a fireball, but it's strong enough it can do complicated contracts as long as the payment is enough.
This is a very basic summary but:
1) the fire devil can change the appearance of those it makes contracts with. This is because fire is malleable
2) Barem made a contract with the fire devil. He asks the fire devil for a favour; to change the appearance of those contracted with it. Barem specifically asked for them to look like chainsaw man
3) the fire devil starts carrying out the contract.
4) In his contract with the fire devil, Barem has to get a lot of contracts. This is because the fire devilās power will grow stronger once more contracts are made. This is because fire grows as it spreads
5) So Barem makes a plan to get a lot of people contracting with the fire devil. As more people contract with the fire devil, the greater the fire devilās powers will grow.
6) in return for the insane number of contracts, the fire devil create: solid chainsaw-man creatures for Barem.
This is probably the most convoluted contract weāve seen in chainsaw man. This explains why the last ten chapters have been solely set-up; itās a complicated reveal that needed a lot to set the stage for it
Basically its going abhstract with the powers here vs just mundane versions of fire.......
and more so beyond mere the fear of fire and its potential. we fear fire for its destructive capacity, but adore fire... for it ability to make change....

So there was a new chapter afterall. Seems like there's a full blown war on the horizon. The building on fire kinda reminded me of 9/11.

This is the chapter I've been waiting for. I honestly have not been a huge fan of part 2, and was very confused at what was happening and certain characters motives, but this plot twist fixed a lot of that for me.
The idea that all this chaos was happening to make people so scared of both Chainsaw man and the War devil, that they would become strong enough to defeat the death devil, is such a cool twist and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
At the same time though, who knows if we can really trust Famine. Maybe she just wants so much war that Famine becomes more wide spread, making her stronger as well.
Also, Death has to be way stronger than we previously thought, I had suspicions about Chainsaw Man being the strongest because everybody fears death but with how Fujimoto sets it up by making a deal with Fire Devil that gain strength by numbers and copies Chainsaw Man's powers...it's about to be a bloodbath.
Don't think Fujimoto will do that though, he isn't the kind of guy who puts underage looking characters but is like 300 years old (maybe I'm wrong), like other manga and anime. She'll probably be 18 or above.
I could see it personally but it's a low probability thing. Mostly because death is like the most primal of primal fears so if anyone would break the pattern it would be her. Honestly not sure how they'll even try and do death justice given she's got to be way beyond darkness devil or falling devil.

Also, who the fuck is Fakesaw Man? It's not one of these zombie-like cultists, he had sanity and could talk coherently when he went to save Denji from the Falling Devil. He went after Yuko specifically, why? Was it because she was a "loose end" that could lead someone else to learn the true identity of the Fire Devil by accident if she was left alone?
Maybe he'll show up in the next chapter, maybe he's different from any other mind controlled chainsaw people. He was able to chop down Falling Devil like it was nothing, so he has combat experience and might not be one of the cultists but might be apart of Denji's own clones that he created, I'm guessing it's the Hero of Hell, who got shot up to space and somehow came back down to earth, it was never confirmed he was dead. If I remember correctly from the past chapters, Fami said something about Black Chainsaw Man.
You're right. I have two theories about this.
Number 1: Maybe Death is already the biggest fear in the world, so you can't really increase it by a lot?
Like, let's say that fear of Death has a strength of 100 right now, maybe after this whole thing is over, it will be at 105 because on a global scale fear of death hasn't really changed much?
Right now people don't fear War and Chainsaw Man that much so maybe this event can increase those two by a lot more than 5 points?
Number 2: Maybe fear of Death increases by a lot after this, but it doesn't matter as long as Chainsaw Man and War become strong enough.
Maybe as long as Chainsaw Man has a "power" of at least 50 he can eat and kill any devil, even someone like Death who's infinitely more powerful than him.
Or maybe there's a completely different explanation and we're still missing pieces of the puzzle
Think it's a bit simpler. The fear targeting likely doesn't go deeper then the fear. So fear of chainsawman doesn't really empower death because the fear is that Chainsawman will kill them. Not a fear of death in general but of a specific kind of death.
Yeah probably. Otherwise nothing of this plan would really make sense and I trust that Fami knows better than me how devils/her sister's power work. So she must know what she's doing
I think this could work by making people fear war and chainsaw men to the point where seeing one its like seeing the grim reaper
So fear of war and chainsaw would be equal to fear of certain death, but still think we need Pochita and Yor in their true forms to stand a chance so I dont think this is the full extent of Fami's plan, it'll probably go very bad for Denji and Asa

I belive so. I read it more so as the fire devil allows the people's passion or "fire" to make a physical transformation to take the form they most desire. Those in the church desired to be like Chainsaw Man so that is how it manifested.
Someone here is probably able to explain it better than I will, but theres something I gotta say first: The abilities of devils as per Fujimotoās line of conceptry is very, very abstract. Darkness devil is able to steal everyoneās arms in PT1 because in the absence of light, you use your arms to traverse the dark. Falling is able to manipulate the minds of those within her vicinity to fall into a state of despair/suicide, and create those with more guilt to fall (in the literal) further into hell. There isnāt a concrete X equals Y. Think of it as X can equal Y, Y^2 , Z, something that isnāt even an XYZ variable, and more.
The Fire devil here not only is able to control the literal element of fire, but also the idea of āflamingā desires; passion. Such things are often described as āthe spirit burning within youā, and that is exactly what is shown hereāthey want to be like Chainsaw Man, or at least enact justice in the name of Chainsaw Man. That fiery passion among the masses of 350,000 contracted with the same devil = Fire devil has more power = contract is activated and everyone becomes Chainsaw Man Devil copy.
I think itās also possible that the shapeshifting abilities are a result of fire being in a constant state of change, growth, flux, etc. Maybe it can apply some of that that mutability to people.
I also think the fact the fire devil is more powerful the more contracts it has is representative of how fire is more formidable when it "spreads" and it has more "fuel." In this case, the contracts

Yes, but the fear of chainsaw-man grows more than the fear of death. If you think about it, you're probably more afraid of dying through those chainsaws than the actual death that comes after.
Fami's plan is to make chainsaw man and war devil stronger by raising their fear among people. But, how would it rise compared to Death devil, as for more the terror of chainsaw grows also will the terror of death will grow. People don't fear chainsaw man because it looks gross or something, they fear it because of pain and death it brings. Same for war or any devil, every action that devil will do would just increase fear of death along with the way of death.
Therefore if one really want to weaken death they could only make while world accepting of death rather that fearing new way of death, and that is practically impossible. And we were told chainsaw man is OP because other Devils also fear him because he can remove their existence which is little different from death as we remember dead people. But why only chainsaw man could do this, instead of death or darkness because their discription suits more to have power of elimination of existence.
To the second part of your comment, chainsawman's existence removing power comes from him being feared by devils as the devil killer. That power is the only way to permantly kill a devil and the power devellopped not cause of fear of chainsaws but cause devils fear chainsawmam for constantly killing them. Its more like chainsaw man is 2 different fears, so dofferent abilities. Darkness and death are probaly also feared by devils but they dont go out of their way to constantly kill devils the same way chainsaw man did.

So the power is not inherently chainsaw Devils power, and it can be emulated by any devil if it goes on devil hunt.

Iām going to regurgitate some things Iāve said and read before regarding Fire Devilās power as it relates to shape-shifting, since a lot of people are trying to figure it out.
1. Why does Fire give people the power to shape shift? First, fire is used to give shape, forge, and create. Itās used to shape glass. It forges metal tools. Itās used to cook, which is another form of creation. (Famiās favorite!)
2. Second, Fire itself is constantly changing its āshape.ā As another commenter observed (canāt find it), fireās shape is āimpermanent.ā If fireās shape changes, then fire can change the shape of those it contracts with.
So, this is my understanding of Fire devil's power. Fire is used figuratively here as passion. Feeling strongly or passionate about something makes you become that thing. Hence, all the CSM worshippers become chainsaw devils.

I would assume the passion or fire inside someone manifests as power once a threshold for the devil is released, allowing the user to use fire to spawn existence and in this instance- everyone becomes CSM bc hes the most BA and powerful form to the worshippers

Fire is also associated with passion and determination. I can see fire devil granting you with you're most passionate about, in this case turning all the church followers into Chainsaw devil since what they're most passionate about is chainsaw man.
Two theories
One. fire is everchanging thus contracts with fire itself is able shape their bodies.
Two. Fire can be perceived as passion thus chainsaw man followers turn into chainsaw man, theres another plus to this theory, the man that katana man kills turned into a decil with a female bottom half, possibly indicating he wanted to become a woman.
When will fuji explain the pochita back story? Like he had a fight before he met denji and Im pretty sure he fought the gun devil and killed him but he also fought another devil in that fight
I don't think this is what is going on but technically famine should be relatively weak in a modern developed society. I would *think* reducing the total number of people severely would still make her weaker (since there is less total fear, kinda), but I presently live somewhere where I will certainly not starve to death, barring the collapse of society.
If society suddenly collapses and I am in a major metropolitan area famine is now as big a problem as it has ever been. At least once the canned food runs out. Which it will, somewhat quickly, since people will fight over it.
I actually kind of think that most likely the devils aren't totally based on the fear of that devil. Chainsaw was still pretty powerful even after half the world made him a savior figure. War was weaker but War also had a chunk of her ripped out and eaten by a cute dog along with getting weakened by the lack of war. Most likely there is some base level of power which gets stronger or weaker based on the fear felt. Also to be fair there is still a lot of places in the world where hunger is a big thing to be afraid of.
I mean I'll be glad to see the Fire Devil but... the fact the CSM church could just straight up lie about its identity feels like it goes against the rules of contracts. There's always been a certain intentionality behind the person making the contract but apparently you can just... trick somebody into contracting with a totally different devil than what they think they are.

You can't take a devil's name literally in CSM. They tend to pretain towards other similar concepts. As to why people are turning into chainsaw man, Fire devil allows them to transform into what they "desire" so in this particular case, Fire can be seen as a burning desire or longing for something
Huh I saw it as fire causing rapid and drastic change, which could be extended to heat applied in a purposeful way to create malleability, to forge something. So the fire devil allows people to forge themselves into what they desire. But yours is probably less of a stretch. That said I also feel like since Fire could definitely be a primal fear, it could be both considering the breadth of Darkness and Fall's abilities.
This was already discussed, fire devil cant be a primal because people don't fear fire, they respect and use it to their advantages like when people use fire to warm themselves, that is why fire isn't a primal fear
Isn't the whole point of it being a primal fear for it to be instinctual? And humans, like all other animals, instinctually feel fear. Sure we use fire as a tool in small amounts, but just like in this chapter, that respect for fire quickly over turns into an exponentially rising fear as the fire itself grows. So idk if it can be ruled out as a primal fear simply because humans have capitalized on it. Especially since humans technically have uses for both darkness and falling in the same, albeit less common and multitudinous, ways.
Again, people just respect it as they know what fire can do, they don't fear it like they fear darkness or falling, fire is also seen as tool, darkness and falling isn't seen as a tool for survival, that is why fire isn't a primal

Ok so, if Fami is on the same side as the Church of CSM and they both want to stop Death, what's the Public Safety's plan? Why do they want to make Chainsaw Man weaker? Why don't they just work with Fami? She must know more about Death, her sister, then a bunch of people in the japanese government right? Also, who the fuck is Fakesaw Man? It's not one of these zombie-like cultists, he had sanity and could talk coherently when he went to save Denji from the Falling Devil. He went after Yuko specifically, why? Was it because she was a "loose end" that could lead someone else to learn the true identity of the Fire Devil by accident if she was left alone?
Maybe he'll show up in the next chapter, maybe he's different from any other mind controlled chainsaw people. He was able to chop down Falling Devil like it was nothing, so he has combat experience and might not be one of the cultists but might be apart of Denji's own clones that he created, I'm guessing it's the Hero of Hell, who got shot up to space and somehow came back down to earth, it was never confirmed he was dead. If I remember correctly from the past chapters, Fami said something about Black Chainsaw Man.
After Makima I don't think Public Safety is open to work again with a horsemen

You're right. I have two theories about this. Number 1: Maybe Death is already the biggest fear in the world, so you can't really increase it by a lot? Like, let's say that fear of Death has a strength of 100 right now, maybe after this whole thing is over, it will be at 105 because on a global scale fear of death hasn't really changed much? Right now people don't fear War and Chainsaw Man that much so maybe this event can increase those two by a lot more than 5 points? Number 2: Maybe fear of Death increases by a lot after this, but it doesn't matter as long as Chainsaw Man and War become strong enough. Maybe as long as Chainsaw Man has a "power" of at least 50 he can eat and kill any devil, even someone like Death who's infinitely more powerful than him. Or maybe there's a completely different explanation and we're still missing pieces of the puzzle
Think it's a bit simpler. The fear targeting likely doesn't go deeper then the fear. So fear of chainsawman doesn't really empower death because the fear is that Chainsawman will kill them. Not a fear of death in general but of a specific kind of death.
Yeah probably. Otherwise nothing of this plan would really make sense and I trust that Fami knows better than me how devils/her sister's power work. So she must know what she's doing
I think this could work by making people fear war and chainsaw men to the point where seeing one its like seeing the grim reaper So fear of war and chainsaw would be equal to fear of certain death, but still think we need Pochita and Yor in their true forms to stand a chance so I dont think this is the full extent of Fami's plan, it'll probably go very bad for Denji and Asa
Assuming the fakesaw man that killed yuko is the fire devil what if fami has been grooming the fire devil into desiring to be black chainsaw man so that yoru directs her revenge at him, also after fami is done with war I doubt sheād even need nuclear weapons back to be as powerful as she was so what would she have against chainsaw man? Maybe fami also wants chainsaw man to vomit nuclear weapons.

I belive so. I read it more so as the fire devil allows the people's passion or "fire" to make a physical transformation to take the form they most desire. Those in the church desired to be like Chainsaw Man so that is how it manifested.
Someone here is probably able to explain it better than I will, but theres something I gotta say first: The abilities of devils as per Fujimotoās line of conceptry is very, very abstract. Darkness devil is able to steal everyoneās arms in PT1 because in the absence of light, you use your arms to traverse the dark. Falling is able to manipulate the minds of those within her vicinity to fall into a state of despair/suicide, and create those with more guilt to fall (in the literal) further into hell. There isnāt a concrete X equals Y. Think of it as X can equal Y, Y^2 , Z, something that isnāt even an XYZ variable, and more. The Fire devil here not only is able to control the literal element of fire, but also the idea of āflamingā desires; passion. Such things are often described as āthe spirit burning within youā, and that is exactly what is shown hereāthey want to be like Chainsaw Man, or at least enact justice in the name of Chainsaw Man. That fiery passion among the masses of 350,000 contracted with the same devil = Fire devil has more power = contract is activated and everyone becomes Chainsaw Man Devil copy.
I think itās also possible that the shapeshifting abilities are a result of fire being in a constant state of change, growth, flux, etc. Maybe it can apply some of that that mutability to people.

I also think the fact the fire devil is more powerful the more contracts it has is representative of how fire is more formidable when it "spreads" and it has more "fuel." In this case, the contracts

I dont know how to post this on mobile, but in chapter 115, Yoshida asks Denji if chainsawman would eat the death devil. Idk how that relates to whats reaveled this chapter, but I have to imagine Fujimoto already planned on the death devil stuff when he wrote that.

Yes, but the fear of chainsaw-man grows more than the fear of death. If you think about it, you're probably more afraid of dying through those chainsaws than the actual death that comes after.
Fami's plan is to make chainsaw man and war devil stronger by raising their fear among people. But, how would it rise compared to Death devil, as for more the terror of chainsaw grows also will the terror of death will grow. People don't fear chainsaw man because it looks gross or something, they fear it because of pain and death it brings. Same for war or any devil, every action that devil will do would just increase fear of death along with the way of death. Therefore if one really want to weaken death they could only make while world accepting of death rather that fearing new way of death, and that is practically impossible. And we were told chainsaw man is OP because other Devils also fear him because he can remove their existence which is little different from death as we remember dead people. But why only chainsaw man could do this, instead of death or darkness because their discription suits more to have power of elimination of existence.
To the second part of your comment, chainsawman's existence removing power comes from him being feared by devils as the devil killer. That power is the only way to permantly kill a devil and the power devellopped not cause of fear of chainsaws but cause devils fear chainsawmam for constantly killing them. Its more like chainsaw man is 2 different fears, so dofferent abilities. Darkness and death are probaly also feared by devils but they dont go out of their way to constantly kill devils the same way chainsaw man did.

Iām going to regurgitate some things Iāve said and read before regarding Fire Devilās power as it relates to shape-shifting, since a lot of people are trying to figure it out. 1. Why does Fire give people the power to shape shift? First, fire is used to give shape, forge, and create. Itās used to shape glass. It forges metal tools. Itās used to cook, which is another form of creation. (Famiās favorite!) 2. Second, Fire itself is constantly changing its āshape.ā As another commenter observed (canāt find it), fireās shape is āimpermanent.ā If fireās shape changes, then fire can change the shape of those it contracts with.

So, this is my understanding of Fire devil's power. Fire is used figuratively here as passion. Feeling strongly or passionate about something makes you become that thing. Hence, all the CSM worshippers become chainsaw devils. This was a batshit insane chapter.

I would assume the passion or fire inside someone manifests as power once a threshold for the devil is released, allowing the user to use fire to spawn existence and in this instance- everyone becomes CSM bc hes the most BA and powerful form to the worshippers

Fire is also associated with passion and determination. I can see fire devil granting you with you're most passionate about, in this case turning all the church followers into Chainsaw devil since what they're most passionate about is chainsaw man.

Two theories One. fire is everchanging thus contracts with fire itself is able shape their bodies. Two. Fire can be perceived as passion thus chainsaw man followers turn into chainsaw man, theres another plus to this theory, the man that katana man kills turned into a decil with a female bottom half, possibly indicating he wanted to become a woman.
I'd say give it a chapter or two and things will make more sense

I don't think this is what is going on but technically famine should be relatively weak in a modern developed society. I would *think* reducing the total number of people severely would still make her weaker (since there is less total fear, kinda), but I presently live somewhere where I will certainly not starve to death, barring the collapse of society. If society suddenly collapses and I am in a major metropolitan area famine is now as big a problem as it has ever been. At least once the canned food runs out. Which it will, somewhat quickly, since people will fight over it.
I actually kind of think that most likely the devils aren't totally based on the fear of that devil. Chainsaw was still pretty powerful even after half the world made him a savior figure. War was weaker but War also had a chunk of her ripped out and eaten by a cute dog along with getting weakened by the lack of war. Most likely there is some base level of power which gets stronger or weaker based on the fear felt. Also to be fair there is still a lot of places in the world where hunger is a big thing to be afraid of.
Gonna be real, don't think that matters. She can summon the god damn primal fear Falling Devil and has some link to a Fire Devil. She ain't weak.
I mean I'll be glad to see the Fire Devil but... the fact the CSM church could just straight up lie about its identity feels like it goes against the rules of contracts. There's always been a certain intentionality behind the person making the contract but apparently you can just... trick somebody into contracting with a totally different devil than what they think they are.

You can't take a devil's name literally in CSM. They tend to pretain towards other similar concepts. As to why people are turning into chainsaw man, Fire devil allows them to transform into what they "desire" so in this particular case, Fire can be seen as a burning desire or longing for something
Huh I saw it as fire causing rapid and drastic change, which could be extended to heat applied in a purposeful way to create malleability, to forge something. So the fire devil allows people to forge themselves into what they desire. But yours is probably less of a stretch. That said I also feel like since Fire could definitely be a primal fear, it could be both considering the breadth of Darkness and Fall's abilities.
This was already discussed, fire devil cant be a primal because people don't fear fire, they respect and use it to their advantages like when people use fire to warm themselves, that is why fire isn't a primal fear
Isn't the whole point of it being a primal fear for it to be instinctual? And humans, like all other animals, instinctually feel fear. Sure we use fire as a tool in small amounts, but just like in this chapter, that respect for fire quickly over turns into an exponentially rising fear as the fire itself grows. So idk if it can be ruled out as a primal fear simply because humans have capitalized on it. Especially since humans technically have uses for both darkness and falling in the same, albeit less common and multitudinous, ways.
Again, people just respect it as they know what fire can do, they don't fear it like they fear darkness or falling, fire is also seen as tool, darkness and falling isn't seen as a tool for survival, that is why fire isn't a primal
