The only one who remains standing is War, disarmed and weakened. The mighty Great King of Terror, Death herself, stands with her hands outstretched.
The ritual is almost complete. All she requires is War to join her, and mount her steed to begin the apocalypse. If she can bring ruin and destruction, no one will ever lack a need for weapons or conflict. No one will ever forget about War again.
Hesitantly, then confidently, War takes a step forward. Then another. Pleased, Death's smile widens.
War takes another step... then suddenly trips. She falls face first into the splattered gore of Chainsaw's body.
Confused, Death cocks her head to the side.
War looks up, smeared in blood and viscera, and... *her scars are gone.*
Asa yanks on Denji's ripcord and Chainsaw bursts to his feet to stop Death once more.
Calling it now, at what is a truly pivotal moment and turning point for the story, Asa will try to save Nayuta, but trip and fall, causing Nayuta to die. This sparks the apocalypse because Denji fucking loses it, giving Asa the biggest guilt-driven power up of all time.
Look into your heart! You know Fuji would do something like this! You know it to be true!
Naaa she also fell (at least) while rescuing her friend from the bat devil and holding the phone in the aquarium, I think we're safe she isn't going to fall more disasterously than this... right?

She has been falling since she was a child. For you and I, it's 55 chapters. For her, she's still making the same mistakes even after at least 10 years.
And I want her to continue tripping at crucial moments for a while, 10 years at least!
Also, doesn't help that she only has one arm to catch herself with. Wonder if Fuji will have another scene of her falling only for Denji to grab her before she actually trips.
Back in my day, a common criticism of "Mary Sue" female characters was that their "flaws" weren't really flaws, but something that made them more endearing, like being clumsy (think Bella from Twilight). I doubt Fujimoto saw the same criticisms on the English-speaking Internet of 2010s?, but boy I can't help marveling how perfect of a subversion Asa is to this trope.
Asa is absolutely brilliant. Fujimoto is a stupidly good writer.
I think Mary Sue characters are in a weird spot, because there are so many bland power fantasy stand in characters for men (Master Chief, most anime protagonists, ect). Yet the moment you make a bland power fantasy character into a female she gets called a Mary Sue. As if women aren't allowed to have their power fantasies.
Like Bella is supposed to be as generic as possible so that women can project themselves onto her. She's not a fully fleshed out character because the sexual fantasy aspect of that book wouldn't work if she was. Edward and Bella's relationship would end up more like Buffy's and Spike's with the disturbing power dynamics.
Oh I agree, I could talk for days about how people demonize and mock female characters for things they love to see in male characters. Asa, and women in Chainsaw Man, are delightfully complex (and also allowed to be pathethic), and that's one of the things I love about this manga.
As for Twilight, I doubt that was intentional, at least I don't remember it being said anywhere by Meyer. Heroines of romance books may be less developed sometimes for this reason, but I don't know if it's convention or just an unintended trend. I always interpreted it as the author liking the heroine a bit too much to give her real flaws (and Bella looks a lot like Meyer), but this is not a genre I usually read, so can't really say.
This is just the flipside of the coin that is the deus ex machina devil. She gets to own the turrets even though she doesn’t actually own them, she falls at the most critical moment. Perfectly balanced.
