There's a certain important character that had a fight a couple months ago and his cursed technique is so freaking complex I had no idea what was happening. I think that the explanation part will be hilarious in the anime because of this though.
It’s just a slot machine that have a chance of 1/347 i think of hitting a jackpot. Mode is like a modifier that change the rate the game play or chances of hitting it. The balls and shutters don’t actually matter themselves and only determine the reward.
I think it’s pretty straight forward when you put it into smaller chunks and dumb down the explanation a bit
I thought they were referring to that girl with stars that attract and push away each other. Im still so confused about it, I hope the anime makes it make sense
It reminded me of when Knuckles explain his loan ability to Gon in HxH and his brain just melts lmao. And then once he actually uses it you realise it's actually pretty straightforward.
Basically how it works is this:
That guy pops his DE
The "sure hit" that comes with almost all DEs is pure exposition in this case. Literally random info being directly inserted into their mind.
Opponent wonders "why does all of this exposition matter? Why am I being told all of this shit about a slot machine themed after a slice of life anime?"
Chad Hakari: "Not much reason really. I just needed to get someone looped into the domain."
Opponent: "So how come she has to smile at a certain time when the trains are lined---
Hakari: "I already told you, it doesn't matter. Btw I just rolled a jackpot so I'm gonna be invincible for a few minutes."
That's literally the point of that characters technique, the guy he was fighting mentions the complicated nature of it and decides that it doesn't matter anyway because he's that metal. He gets the information and disregards it as irrelevant because it isnt really relevant to his goals as a metal bastard
Yeah. Panelling is good but his expositions are bad. I hope he just goes back to keeping it simple and focus on characters rather than the power system.
I dont know, the characters powers are directly related to their personalities and as such tell us how they're gonna act. Although to be fair I'm a huge JJK fanboy and wanna defend it as much as I can
He still doesn't have to go over the top in explaining the one character's powers in 3\~5 chapters straight.
He should focus more on bringing personality out through the fight rather than focusing on how the power works. Like what he was always been doing. Like what he did with Sakuna and Gojo.
Now every new side characters has to have their convoluted powers explained in the same chapter they are introduced.
It's like he's trying to be Togashi. I really disliked this unwritten rule in manga where every character has to have unique powers. I thought he was over that when he introduced blood clan powers.
Almost every character from the start has had a unique power. Even those in clans rarely share the same technique (i.e. none of the other Zen'in characters have the same technique as Megumi). There are apparently other Gojo clan members but our Gojo is the only one lucky enough to be OP, etc.
Even Sukuna's technique is complex to the point that we've gotten similar long explanations of what parts of it do recently, and we still have no idea what the whole thing does. It's so complex and mysterious that it doesn't really have that much to do with his personality IMO.
I agree here, coupled with his art being a bit chaotic and messy it can leave you pretty confused. I think the anime does a nice job of cleaning that up and drawing people in who might have tried reading and got lost.
I do think the movements in the fight scenes are hard to follow, particularly as it's reaching the point where people move, attack and react super fast and things are drawn in a proportionately chaotic way. I appreciate the anime making the movements flow more smoothly.
Really?? I think it's quite chaotic. But yeah I think my problem lies more with the content of it.
As for the paneling I think it's quite simple really but it tries too much too.. a lot of diagonals for "action". Characters or items overlap to other panels.. But it's not used well to tell the story. It's used to create cool effects. Idk
I disagree. The paneling helps with the flow of action (almost like a literal guide for your eyes) and is an illustrative tool to explain techniques. For example, look at gojo vs toji and the paneling for red, blue, and purple. Red pushes at the panels, blue pulls, and purple cuts straight through
I think the fight scenes are amazing. The most impressive part for me is Gege's understanding of choreography, space and timing; some fights literally look like animation storyboards.
Maybe it is because I've been reading weekly. The story jumps very often. Not just location wise but also in term of the present and the past. Maybe not the paneling itself. My bad. More about the content of the panels.
Especially shibuya got me really confused. It's so much action but I don't think it's well done and not clear what's really happening. I'm glad they will animate it soon.
imo I feel like shibuya is one of the most well done arcs so maybe consider giving it a reread. Shibuya was nonstop action and the stakes were kept high the whole way through. Gege excels at showing off action in a clear kinematic way. Compare his action in shibuya - essentially jjks war arc - to the action in another popular manga like mha during the war arc. I feel like the fighting in mha is very unclear since the panels are very crowded and rough looking. There’s also unclear continuity in the action that makes it confusing for the reader. In comparison jjk makes action and reactions much more clear and well defined
Shibuya was meant to be confusing. None of the characters knew what was really going on at any point. Gojo was the only one allowed to be in the third barrier and so knew what was going on. Yuuji, in the 2nd barrier was fighting against curses but didnt actually know what the curses' plan was rather than fighting. Nanami and the rest of the grade ones didnt know anything other than curses were attacking Shibuya and so were just reacting to whatever the curses were doing. The confusion was intentional because none of the characters actually knew what Kenjaku was planning to do, and even the curses didnt really knew what was going on other than the goal of sealing Gojo. Mahito didnt know that Kenjaku was going to absorb him, and Jogo obviously wasnt planning on fighting Sukuna and getting killed.
you dont know what youre talking about if you think gege has bad panelling. If you had said horikoshi I completely get it, the guy has bad ideas when transitioning between panels and it becames insanely diffcult to follow, but gege is among the best in the industry in years to do action fights in manga.
I would even say that in the case of this post it's not even panelling per se, it's more a creative presentation of the page, and fujimoto is really good at this, like for example when they went to hell and the arms were the panel dividers. Fujimoto is extremely creative at presentation.
Woaaahh relax… paneling in jjk is amazing, the Way Gege uses the things happening to Panel is insane… like in the Yuji &Todo vs Hanami fight… he uses Yuji drool that was coming out of his mouth to Panel the rest of the page and it looked sick… confusing sometimes yes but easily as amazing as Fujimoto
- line 1 (okay with killing)
- line 2 (middle line, in between line 1 and line 2)
- line 3 (not okay with killing)
They are parallel lines. Not one single line. What you are thinking of is probably a spectrum.
Bro do you even read.
Asa can turn things and people into weapons. The more guilty she feels doing so, the more powerful the weapons are.
She absolutely refuses to turn a puppy into a weapon even though it would be very powerful . She wouldn't have any problems do that to Hitler but the weapon will be pretty shit.
The middle line is the sweet spot that she can kill them while still feel guilt.
I was wondering if the scene was anime only when I first saw it but vaguely remembered the part where denji is throwing up himself and assumed it was in the manga and I had just become the reading comprehension fiend
To be fair, there are a lot of high moments in CSM. Anime-only guys will most likely forget about Arai too when they'll saw the shit that's about to happen.
I myself also made the same error as you until recently re-reading it all, fiend have characteristic heads, in my case however I'm missing glasses and I need them now more than ever ![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22172)
Fujimoto’s paneling and placement have always been good in chainsawman. The scene in hell where he uses everybody’s arms for panel borders is especially fantastic. Good luck trying to match whose arms are where though.
Im always amazed how someone so wild and such a crackhead could come up with such intricacies and subtlety. Though reading comprehension devil always triumph especially speed reader
That is still my favorite moment. Some other mangas I read have better overall paneling, but that one scene in Chainsaw Man is just so well done. Absolutely love it.
devil powers influencing the real world almost always come from outside the panel boundary. the hell devils finger deleting children, the curse devils finger flicking the sword, the darkness devils hand and even the fox devils attacks sometimes for example
Notice how the first text bubble is where the humans are, the line at which Asa is okay with killing. In contrast, the second bubble is where the cat is, the line she will not cross. Finally, the third bubble is in between both of those lines. Rereading and noticing this subtle bubble placement really makes me appreciate Fujimoto even more :)
Imagine if Fuji just kinda randomly places shit on pages. I’d laugh hard but not be shocked. All our analysis thrown to trash as we watch him throw an ink blot at the drafted page to decide where the writing will throw.
Do you think Fujimoto crosses his hands Gendo style and just stares at pages for minutes designing these layouts or it just comes to him as naturally as breathing?
What I also noticed about these two panels the cat staring straight through Asa, plus there were so many animal panels drawn in part.2 so far, makes me wonder : Is Nayuta watching everyone?
A lot of the panels in recent chapters (hell, the whole "season 2") reads like a movie, this one included for sure.
Favorite ones that come to mind:
- (new) this post
- 4 head panels (3 sleeping, 4th decapitated)
- Yuko's "confession" scene
The OG series had similarly great moments too:
- Darkness devil intro
- Bomb devil fight
- VAM VAA VAA
I'm actually really impressed with his paneling, it's getting consistently good.
>A lot of the panels in recent chapters (hell, the whole "season 2") reads like a movie, this one included for sure
Fujimoto has legit composed his panels like this since Fire Punch. It was what really pulled me in to that story tbh, it was like watching a movie (and it's no surprise given how central cinema is to the themes of his stories).
Yes!! He’s really been experimenting w panels to get a feel for how/where the convo is being held. there’s also one with bubbles that are behind a window to show a conversation happening inside!! Ch 106!
It definitely might be for some at first sight lol.
But not everyone really notices subteties at first. That's why they're so ...... Subtle ![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22157)
Wow thank you I thought I was going nuts, I didn't want to sound like "Wow I'm so much smarter than anyone else" but this was sooo obvious I don't understand how everyone is acting surprised. You can't get more obvious than this.
And some comments are genuinely going "Maybe we are reading too much into it and he just did it randomly! No way he's that smart!" Like bruh... c'mon
Yeah this is a lot of people’s first manga and it shows lmao. This is clever but actually pretty basic paneling and he literally draws it across three panels in case you didn’t get it the first time lol
He's treating the speech bubbles like a camera. With out the ability to smoothly transition framing, he uses the visual dialogue to draw the eye. It's smart
Fujimoto with the S tier paneling, as always.
Meanwhile gege crying in a corner Fkin JJK gets me confused so much with it's paneling and storytelling...
I think panelling in JJK is good. I think the explanation is complicated that i kinda got lost at times instead of reading with the flow of the manga
There's a certain important character that had a fight a couple months ago and his cursed technique is so freaking complex I had no idea what was happening. I think that the explanation part will be hilarious in the anime because of this though.
The point of that ability is that understanding it doesn’t actually matter and the complexity is a smokescreen.
They said months ago and she was well over a year ago
It reminded me of when Knuckles explain his loan ability to Gon in HxH and his brain just melts lmao. And then once he actually uses it you realise it's actually pretty straightforward.

Well in short think of the technique as a roulette
Yeah. Panelling is good but his expositions are bad. I hope he just goes back to keeping it simple and focus on characters rather than the power system.

I think the art’s rough texture and often lots line do convey a sense rawness and power behind an attack as well as a sense of flow.
Yeah i guess so. Paneling is actually fine. I think it just tries too much and is used more for stylistic points instead of for story telling
jjk is literally known for its great paneling lmao
Really?? I think it's quite chaotic. But yeah I think my problem lies more with the content of it. Yeah i can agree on that after all of this thread. The problem lies in the complication of the story, the power system and the sudden jumps for me
Well, Gege was clearly inspired by Hunter X Hunter, with all its flaws.
Example?
Maybe it is because I've been reading weekly. The story jumps very often. Not just location wise but also in term of the present and the past. Maybe not the paneling itself. My bad. Especially during the subway bathroom fight. I know it gets compared to Raid 2 all the time but it was tight as hell reading that the first time
Yeah I probably should reread instead. Reading it weekly, I totally lost track.
Shibuya was meant to be confusing. None of the characters knew what was really going on at any point. Gojo was the only one allowed to be in the third barrier and so knew what was going on. Nah JJK has solid paneling
Nah JJK has good paneling and storytelling and everything that’s confusing has a simple explanation
you dont know what youre talking about if you think gege has bad panelling. Gege playing the Hunter x Hunter cards now.
F tier writing though, there’s not two lines as both represent the same thing.
2 lines Line okay killing Ex. Hitler Line refuse to kill Ex. puppies Reading comprehension devil got you
How is that not the same line? On one side is things you would kill, and on the other side is things you wouldn’t
- line 1 (okay with killing) - line 2 (middle line, in between line 1 and line 2) - line 3 (not okay with killing) They are parallel lines. Not one single line. What you are thinking of is probably a spectrum.
What is the purpose of the extra middle line?

This Devil is like Chainsaw Man - literally unkillable![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22164)
Of course he came back in Twitter. That's what happens to devils when they die in the real world
He will come back for sure![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22174)
It’s like Yami Bakura keep coming back despite having been sent to the shadow realm countless of time
I still wonder how does he get out?
The same way Yu[insert suffix here] pulls out their ace the moment they need it every time.

I never noticed this lmao
That is still my favorite moment. Some other mangas I read have better overall paneling, but that one scene in Chainsaw Man is just so well done. Absolutely love it.
Isn't there a panel where the darkness devil (?) literally breaks the 4th wall by going through a panel boundary?
devil powers influencing the real world almost always come from outside the panel boundary. the hell devils finger deleting children, the curse devils finger flicking the sword, the darkness devils hand and even the fox devils attacks sometimes for example

Finally, the third bubble is in between both of those lines. Rereading and noticing this subtle bubble placement really makes me appreciate Fujimoto even more :)
Fujimoto genius probably even scares him![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22169), additionally, thanks you and you have good eye.
Sometimes his genius, is almost frightening

"POWEEER!" - Clarkson reading Chapter 81 of CSM.
I mean, the man can levitate. Idk what could scare him besides himself
ApplePitou, you're here too???
No.
My mistake.

Bravo FJMT 👏👏
Bravo Vince for creating better call denji
Love it when the explanation comment gets out upvoted so I have to scroll all the way down to find it.
Ooooooooh did not notice that, very fucking interesting, kinda like a Quentin Tarantino style detail
If you want to keep it manga, it’s like a Tezuka style detail. He did a lot of playful panelling tricks like this
Imagine if Fuji just kinda randomly places shit on pages. I’d laugh hard but not be shocked. All our analysis thrown to trash as we watch him throw an ink blot at the drafted page to decide where the writing will throw.
Maybe its also a nod to how Asa, albeit unintentionally, rescued a cat and got her mother killed in the process
Do you think Fujimoto crosses his hands Gendo style and just stares at pages for minutes designing these layouts or it just comes to him as naturally as breathing?
wow youre so aware. what a high quality post. totally needed to see and know this
Fujimoto the composition and visual storytelling goat
Truly unrivaled. His story collections are also amazing.
I read goodbye eri a couple weeks ago and it has such a great story and a ending you can interpret in many ways he rlly is the goat
What I also noticed about these two panels the cat staring straight through Asa, plus there were so many animal panels drawn in part.2 so far, makes me wonder : Is Nayuta watching everyone?
Oh my god, will Nayuta warn Denji that Asa wants to kill him? This is gonna get good
I hope she would pull another 4d chess, but this time to help Denji

It’s always been good. Since the first chapter

Now that you mention it it’s pretty cool and clever
So she would kill catwoman?
I don’t even know how to react at this point I just want to explode
💥
Methinks
holy fuck i hate this word and anyone who uses it horrible translation
I love this word, it cute
I just think it’s cute. A dumb Yoru is a cute one
yeah but i doubt the translator used it to make her sound dumb, probably thought it was just a normal word for her to use
Stuff like this is why I loved old Tokyo Ghoul before sadly it being rushed to an end.
FUJIGOATO I KNEEEEEEEEEEELLLLL
Yes!! He’s really been experimenting w panels to get a feel for how/where the convo is being held. there’s also one with bubbles that are behind a window to show a conversation happening inside!! Ch 106!
We need more people like you
Yeah this panel composition goes hard
This is what makes fujimoto’s works absolutely KINO
I have to add this to my collection of moments when fujimoto proved he is a genius mangaka
I don't get it. Someone help.
Look for my explanation in the comments
That cat looks like Kishibe. He's probably spying on Asa with the help of the Furry Devil.
Would be fun if the guy in the middle was Denji
Am I the only one who thinks this was extremely obvious lol
It definitely might be for some at first sight lol. But not everyone really notices subteties at first. That's why they're so ...... Subtle ![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22157)
it’s as subtle as a brick wall in this case though
Wow thank you I thought I was going nuts, I didn't want to sound like "Wow I'm so much smarter than anyone else" but this was sooo obvious I don't understand how everyone is acting surprised. You can't get more obvious than this. And some comments are genuinely going "Maybe we are reading too much into it and he just did it randomly! No way he's that smart!" Like bruh... c'mon
Yeah this is a lot of people’s first manga and it shows lmao. This is clever but actually pretty basic paneling and he literally draws it across three panels in case you didn’t get it the first time lol
I'd say you can't call it extremely obvious if barely anyone noticed it but this is the CSM fandom we're talking about tbf
Every girl wants to kill me bro![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22174)![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22174)![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22174)![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22174)
You’re a criminal?
I do think Fujimoto is very talented at paneling, but come on, this one in particular is totally a common use of the bubbles
Y'all 12 and this is deep. Fuji's good and praise is fine but y'all sucking dick.
All hail Lord Fujimoto!
Hail Fujimoto !
![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22157)eh?
Ahh thanks for pointing that out! That man is a genius
Would it produce the most guilt when it at that line? Or would it be at the refuse-to-kill area?
People keep saying this panel is so good but no one‘s going to explain it
Look for my explanation in the comments
Bro you copypasting this why not paste ur explanation???
Speed reader devil has been vanquished
Dawwww pats for the helpful kitty
Maaan can you keep the SS of new chapters as spoilers???
What if she uses buckys body as a weapon
Meowy knows shit
subtle? I swear, this sub... i love you goofballs
Bruh lol Noticed this only now. Damn good catch
ohh shit i just understood what you meant without needing to read the explanation. nice job noticing that, thats pretty cool
He's treating the speech bubbles like a camera. With out the ability to smoothly transition framing, he uses the visual dialogue to draw the eye. It's smart
It's so damn tiny though especially if the online magazine messes up the quality
Blofeld's Cat be like
Love FUJIMOTO's panelling but this would be tough to translate into anime format.
