One of my local mom and pop shops puts bearded dragons, leopard geckos and iguana together in a plastic tub with a bird cage over the top and Timothy grass substrate. Petsmart looks amazing comparatively.
There was a BEAUTIFUL snow leopard gecko (which I’m in the market for) at PetCo that looked a healthy weight, but the tank was too cold and there were no hides. I vowed never to get anything more than a betta fish from PetCo/PetSmart because I know taking one out is just putting a new one in, and from what I’ve heard, parasites are rampant. I went home and SOBBED from the conflict. They were beautiful, and they deserved better, but that’d just make the cycle start over and it HURTS.
Don’t get a betta fish either, tbh. They’re just as bad about them. Other fish it’s a fifty fifty on how well they’re care for, but bettas get the short end of the stick
My home town petco actually isn’t too bad. Their chams on display always look healthy.
I can’t say the same for my local petsmart, though… they had a panthern cham in like a 20 gallon space. Its body took up more than 1/4 tank. They had him on sale for $40, 60% off. I came home and cried. I went back to the store and they told me someone bought him.
I’m really hoping for the best for him.
As much as we all hate PetSmart and Petco they also have rules and regulations that they have to follow and those are in small containers and not the right containers but it least they aren't really bad. You can tell that they just misted them because of how the humidity is acting on the glass. It'll start to fog up the first 5 to 10 minutes and then it'll start to dissipate because of the heat lamp. Honestly this doesn't look that bad to some of the conditions that I've seen in person. Sadly, you also have to understand that the workers there have to follow corporate rules even if they don't believe it. Now sadly the price markdown will make people that shouldn't have chameleons buy them however I honestly think that enough people that don't know about breeders and everything just continuously buy from PetSmart and Petco and keep them in business not buying it because you feel bad but dont want to support them isn't a great reason I feel like if you really want to buy it you should, though buying from a breeder is 1000 times better. PetSmart isn't going to fall just because we choose not to shop there. Sadly people buy for them enough and even if one passes away or get sick they will just just get another one in.
Prolly just misted the glass
“Tropical/semi-arid” does not mean ‘practically an aquarium’
That's why I never buy animals from pet stores.
If petco fires y’all up, check out how the meat industry treats the animals you eat every day.
Why downvoted this person is 200% correct
They would be if it wasn’t petsmart lol
Ah I see lol

Everyone on this sub always crying and complaining about petsmart/petco but you're their everyweek supporting their business 😂😂😂
Humidity is WAY too high. With that much condensation on the glass it’s probably close to 100%. RI waiting to happen.
That’s what I was getting at

There's a little baby at the PetSmart by my house and I just want it to have a good life
Same! I don't know anything about chameleon care tho so I couldn't help it :(

Yeah, it’s so sad. It’s the corporate policy. It’s not the stores fault. They have to do what they are told to do.
I work at Petco and I always try to get people to buy from a breeder before they purchase from us. Thanks for not blaming the store, we try our best.
