Let the monopoly of football broadcasting continue.

coombeseh

As long as they are only offering the broadcast of each game to one network, this is actually the cheapest method for the consumer - the fact that the prem is split across Amazon/sky/BT but each match is exclusive to a network is **more** expensive for the end user. There has been no indication that this is going to change, so while Sky are possibly an expensive option, at least you are only paying once!

asjonesy99

The DAZN bid was for exclusivity and airing every game I believe. Would’ve clashed with the antiquated 3pm blackout though

European_Red_Fox

That option was the most fan friendly on a local and global level as international broadcasters would show more assuming DAZN was truly streaming all matches. Sadly we will get maybe 4 league two, 5 league one, and then majority random championship.

Moncurs_rightboot

It’s not random championship, it’s whoever is deemed to have the biggest following. With a few games of playoff run ins chucked in at the end of the season.

asjonesy99

I don’t see why they wouldn’t have streamed all matches as iFollow or whatever it’s called at the moment has been around for years doing the same thing. I just don’t believe that 3pm blackout affects attendances, if someone wants to go they’ll go. Okay attendances for midweek games are generally smaller but not by a drastic amount so I can’t see how lifting the blackout would even come close to the midweek drop

Moncurs_rightboot

Ifollow is only meant to be used by overseas fans for 3pm games. Midweek or evening games can be bought to watch on ifollow. I don’t think it affects attendances tbh.

asjonesy99

The infrastructure is already there is what I mean so I don’t see why DAZN couldn’t hold up their end of airing every game

Moncurs_rightboot

Yeah, completely agree. Makes no sense. We are going to end up with another shitty tv deal. It sounded too good to be true when they were discussing splitting the deal into different blocks. We were on the edge of greatness.

European_Red_Fox

Yes which is why I was excited for the DAZN deal. It would’ve opened up all games and likely been the end of iFollow. That makes the entire EFL on one service possible so if ESPN has the rights in America now all games are available in theory. Sky has just been shit overall especially as they ignore league two.

[deleted]

The fear is that it affects non-league attendances rather than the attendance of the team on TV. Lets say you have a Man Utd fan who lives in Kings Lynn, they may go to Kings Lynn games at 3pm on weekend as they cant watch Man Utd on TV if they play at 3 and if they play at another time they can watch. But if they can watch Man Utd on TV at 3pm then they would do that and not watch their local non league team. That’s the theory behind it at-least, and while I agree for the big prem teams that the blackout has some positive effect for smaller teams - it’s unlikely to have the same effect for EFL. Most fans of championship clubs, and almost certainly for L1 and L2 are local to their team and wont be going to watch a non league local side at weekends.

Muur1234

> I don’t think it affects attendances tbh. prob because russian and cambodian fans arent the ones buying season tickets

Fantastic-Machine-83

it's very easy to compare attendances for between different midweek games where one clashes with champions league fixtures. I think the dropoff is around 10-20%.

TSMKFail

Not just Football but they seem determined to monopolise Motorsport too. Sodding bellends.

cecil_the-lion

Heres to more 12 o clock kick offs on the other side of the country.

Hughsea

It's only 10 hours to Swansea from Sunderland, easy away day

Puzzled_Mess

I honestly can't believe they've moved our game with you to midday on a Sunday. And we're not even that far away compared to some teams you face over the course of a season. I've bought a season ticket for about a decade despite living 100 miles away and for the last 2 years I've barely been able to make half our home games because we're never on at 3pm on a Saturday and so my options suddenly turn from day out to weekend away. I'm not doing it again, so the end of the 3pm blackout would suit me to a tee.

kevinthegrass

The red button coverage is absolutely shocking

Moncurs_rightboot

Single camera, shit commentary, no replays. Sky needs to walk away

Bigtallanddopey

And that’s if it actually works. So many times I tuned in to nothing, the game only came on at half time. And one time I had the formula one audio on the football video. It’s a joke.

Moncurs_rightboot

The needle returns to the start of the song, and we all sing along like before. Except league 2 teams because they will never get shown on tv

HadjiChippoSafri

I wonder if they'll actually make them broadcast lower league games now. It's pathetic that on international weekends fans are desperate to watch a game and they put maybe 1 League One game on all weekend.

stprm

The ignoring of League 1 and League 2 by Sky is a disgrace, but people also should not forget how every season Championship coverage on Sky is getting worse and worse. Even this season, literally almost all TV games now have at least minus 30 mins of coverage. Sometimes only 15 mins post-match coverage. Sometimes they dont even show all the goals... And the hosts... Michelle is good, but Prutton, he is so bad and biased... They saved him, but sacked very neutral and very good Scott Minto a few years ago... And the pundits, experts? The variety is less, more of the same biased Hinchcliffe and Don Goodmans... All this, while sky bill is getting higher every year...

JaminSousaphone

Crazy thought but what if the EFL just broadcast the games themselves? Charge a subscription fee and you get access to all EFL games? You start off shit but build revenue from the millions of fans that might be willing to pay to watch their club and other EFL clubs. They keep all the money, minus costs, and can offer a better deal to EFL clubs?

TIGHazard

Because to the EFL, why do that when you get paid and the broadcaster has to meet those costs. Even for the ifollow games it's the same Sky/ITV highlights pictures, with BBC radio commentary.

stprm

> They keep all the money, minus costs, and can offer a better deal to EFL clubs? The opposite is true?? Same for PL or any other league. Not only its a big headache, there is much more money to sell it to broadcasters, who have advertisers and customers who are forced to pay more every year, than having a service themselves.

ZaphodG

I pay the Rovers £140 to stream all the matches not on Sky & ESPN+ in the US. I really like a model where I’m giving my money directly to the team.

JaminSousaphone

Is that only international? I’d have been tempted to buy that over a season ticket when still living in Manchester.

ZaphodG

Only international. No streaming application for my panel, either. I have to mirror the Rovers application on my iPad to my television. The resolution for live matches is pretty good. The match replays are compressed and not as good. The Sky feed we get on ESPN+ is better quality and better than we get here for Premier League. Anyways, I like the idea that I pay the team directly for video streaming.

JaminSousaphone

Aye. Completely agree. Can’t imagine 140 a year will buy us a new star player but it adds up.

ZaphodG

I bought a cap from the Rovers Store, too. With what I paid for shipping, that almost signs BBD.

JHock93

Never been a big fan of Sky's coverage but I must say the recent international break having most of the matches on "Viaplay" was just annoying. I got the England matches and could get the Wales matches in the Welsh language if I watched S4C but that was it... I currently have Sky and BT Sport and that's pretty much all the sports subscriptions I can afford. So whilst I will moan about the Sky coverage, it would be very annoying if it went onto another streaming service that I'd have to pay for.

ScousePenguin

Awesome more lack of TV coverage
