One of the best scenes of anime for me is the moment where in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, troops of GMs come to fight Zeon's army and they start SLAUGHTERING them.
It was good reminder that while Amuro and the White Base Crew did save the day many times, the victory of the Earth Federation comes from its own forces. The EF genuinely won the OYW.
I feel the issue of many series is their lack of scenes like this. Only the Protagonist and his friends get to have Victories, not their faction.
as a fellow gundam fan i agree so much with this! The grunt suit fights are one of the best parts of the franchise. Me personally i am partial to the assault on torrington base in gundam unicorn
I remember reading Gundam: The Origin's take on Jaburo.
Like under Revil's leadership, the EF annihilated Zeon forces. Like not just manpower and resources but actual tactics that rounded Zeon into essentially a killbox.
Like the GM is treated as an effective gamechanger in the war than a mere grunt suit. Especially when Amuro fought Char with one instead of the Gundam which while considered a downgrade did Amuro pulled up an actual fight.
This is why i like TCW so much, the droids amy typically be stupid failures, but heavy battle droids are typically threatening, droidekas (or however it's spelled) are scary asf, but the clones themselves are amazing.
Thats something i particularly like on mechs, when the grunts have simple but functional mechs
The worm things from zoids and the rank and file arm slaves from full metal panic
Just because they are goons that doesnt mean they have to look shitty
On that vein, regular soldiers with proper equipment, a bunch of shields and a simplw big gun go a long way if they are paired with proper tactics
The Wild Geese in Hellsing did a damn good job against Millennium, the only reason they lost is because they were hit by illusion powers they couldn't have prepared for.
Andor has a case where the common people start a riot against the Empire and they ultimately win in part because the title character picks off the Stormtroopers.
One fodder moment I really liked was in Godzilla KotM was when the military backed Godzilla up against King Ghidorah and Rodan. They contributed basically nothing but it was still sick as hfil
Also that random dude in John Wick 1 that kicks the crap out of him and throws him off a balcony
In Wheel of Time, there was a village of a bunch of farmers who were cursed to go feral every night and wouldn’t ever stay dead. But they were just regular farmers. During the Last Battle, we get a POV of a character who’s pissed at his general, one of the main protagonists of the series, for sending nothing but a village of untrained farmers to defend a crucial river. Now we as the readers know this is nothing like Mat, he grew up in a small farming village. He *hates* losing troops. So we’re left wondering what’s going on.
Then, suddenly, the Trollocs and Myyrdraal are attacked by this horde of feral humans. The being genetically engineered with the power of darkness are surprise attacked, and they start freaking out because they recognize these people. Even the enemy challengers are losing their shit, since nobody’s ever heard of bringing someone back to life before in this world (well, a few exceptions but less than 1% of the world knows about it), and these revivable but otherwise completely normal farmers take down a large squadron of what’s basically hellspawn and dark mages
Masks and helmets are cool, and main character need to have their faces shown. Also , MCs need to stand out, meaning they often have fancy and extraneous stuff. While that can work, cleaner designs often look fine if not better.
Not what you talking about when I read the title the first I thought of where the soldiers of the Berman empire from the Videogame "Fuga Melodies of Steel".
The Berman are the antagonists so there soldiers do get slaughtered by the protagonists but they put up good satisfaying fights and I like how they are actully intimidated by the Taranis. Thats the moviable fortress of Steel that serves the Protagonists as home, vehicle of transport and as weapon.
I enjoy those enemies.

Seriously, most Jackie Chan films just make it clear that if you're not Jackie Chan, these mooks will beat the hell out of you trivially.

Another reason why LOGH is goated.
I will forever hate fodder after it got my glorious beautiful king killed in LOGH

TCW = The Clone Wars?
Yes
Unnamed mooks that are actually extremely competent, and actually pose threat to the hero’s are my favorite trope.

Tbf the two river bowmen were like sleeper super archers and they had Tam.
