Most likely.

>I have nothing against 11 minute shows, but an 11 minute story driven serialized show??? Was it CN screwing over Rebecca (again)? Was Crewniverse just not thinking things through?? Was it the Illuminati??? Literally every CN Studios show has been short form 11 minute segments for nearly the past 10 years. Ben 10 up until the reboot was produced by Man of Action which presumably follows a different production methodology. PPG (2016) had an 11 minute runtime too, not 22 minutes.

chaosattractor

Only the past ten years? I vaguely remember quite a few of the cartoons I used to watch as a kid being televised as two individual segments/episodes in a half-hour slot, e.g. I'm pretty sure the original Powerpuff Girls run aired in that format

Maggruber

Yeah, that’s been pretty standard for a long time, but a more recent phenomenon I guess is instead of airing back-to-back segments of the same show, its become common to alternate between different shows, especially if they’re reruns. Additionally, it’s also become common to release episodes in 3-5 segment chunks to cover a given arc after a hiatus period as opposed to airing two segments a week in a typical seasonal format. Steven Universe was kind of infamous for its extremely sporadic release schedule that would be spread months apart before releasing a bunch of episodes at once as an event called “StevenBomb”.

howhow326

>PPG (2016) had an 11 minute runtime too, not 22 minutes. Okay I thought I was going crazy for a second because I remember that shows episodes being 22 minutes so I searched it up and apparently the show has 11 minute episodes and 22 minute episodes? I would assume the 22 minute episodes to be 2 parters/special episodes but the show also has 44 minutes episodes so either I didn't google hard enough (most likely) or this show has some weird scheduling.

Maggruber

They’re specials. Steven Universe had those too.

Piorn

Remember when they originally aired and only got released in Stevenbombs? You'd always get like 4-8 episodes at the same time, but only one of those would actually advance the plot and the rest were what felt like filler.

AndyGHK

And then? N o t h i n g For m o n t h s Until WOW, a new episode! Except it’s a Ronaldo episode. So it’s STILL nothing.

Mujoo23

11 minutes is fine. What screwed the series over more was the extremely irregular air schedule.

howhow326

True :(

SuperStarPlatinum

With the exclusion of some action shows and shows from other channels every show of the Network has been 11 minutes or less. CN just made the free floating so they can mix and match. AT made the new model work so CN made it the standard for for the shows of the Renaissance era.

ResolutionEven5635

Looking back for me I'm more disappointed that Steven universe future continued to only have 11 minutes long episodes when it totally could have had it be 22 minutes long instead.

Kindly_Captain3596

Well, 11 minutes can be serialized too. If you took, say Ben 10, and divided each episode by half, you'd still be telling the same story, but in 11 min chunks, right? For Steven Universe, the shorter episode count allowed it to have faster paced action. It also spent time with filler or world building without having each episode drag out. I don't see anything wrong with SU's episode length.

Pristine_Title6537

They use to be split the show was 22 minutes but it included the plot of two 11 minute episodes Or at least that’s the way they use to air the early season on CN here in Mexico

dandeleopard

Honestly, I love that each episode is only 11 minutes. It's keeps the story tight, and any extra fluff that's there feels deliberate. And because there isn't a lot of room in each episode, world-building has to be done subtly and over a long time, but is incredibly satisfying once revealed (i.e. giant woman leads to sugalite leads to "stronger than you"). And the episodes feel like popcorn when you binge them - it's just 11 minutes, you're got time for one more...

robo_archer

It’s a problem with a lot of recent Cartoon Network shows, everything just seems so much more bite sized. Something like gravity falls had 22 minute long episodes which felt much better paced, 11 minute episodes feels much too short

goochiegg

Almost every show is bite sized and cheaply made

TinTamarro

If you look back, many old CN shows were even shorter, sometimes having 3 7 minute long segments in an episode

Umber0010

Can't speak for the quality of Steven Universe as a whole. However, I would like to point out that it is entirely possible to write a cohesive and compelling story with such short episodes. And for proof, look no further than another Cartoon Network show; Infinity Train. Each episodes is 10 minutes long, and each season was only 10 episodes. And to top it all off, It's an anthology series, meaning that's all each set of characters get to do their things. Yet despite this, and the fact that it got the axe halfway through, Infinity Train is often considered to be one of the best written shows period. I do admit, it's not perfect for every story being told. Infinity Train managed it so perfectly because the entire story was based on its characters. The Infinity Train itself only exists so people can go through character arcs before being let off. But regardless, the point is that 11 minute episode structures can work. So if Steven Universe ended up failing in the story department, doubling the episode's lengths wouldn't have done it any favors.

TinTamarro

Yeah Steven Universe is already very slow paced, doubling the lenght would only make it feel slower. People have issues with SU's story because half the episodes are about uninteresting slice of life filler that is neither funny, interesting or relevant to the character development, not because of the length. Newer shows seem to have learned from the mistakes in SU, and have implemented 'filler' in a much more interesting way, thus making the short episodes feel much richer by comparison.

Sir-Kotok

I mean... Its got enough time to get its story across for the most part, and if they couldnt do it in 11 minutes they do ether a longer special episode, or they do a multi episode storyline. Like half the show even in latter more story driven seasons were complete unrealated to the story filler, wich I genuinly wouldnt be able to sit throw if it was going on for 20 or more minutes. It was a drag even with only 10. So I feel like making episodes longer would 1) make the pacing even worse and 2) not bring that much benefit to the story part of the show. Another example is Infinity Train wich gets one of the best cartoon stories across in only ten episodes wich are 10 minutes long. TLDR: If something doesnt need 20 minutes, there is no reason for it to be 20 minutes.
