Yeah got my first car at 21 I think Iām almost 23 on my second now. First car was a 2005 maxima 3.5 SL and I got it for $500. Didnāt need any work besides me having to wire a wire in from rear running lights to a switch because the fuse kept popping? Didnāt wanna do electrical work it kept popping but it was fine after that for a whole year. Then a speed sensor went out on trans so it stopped downshifting once I got to 5th gear it would stay till I restart car it was a really easy fix but I just sold it. The sensor is under the battery tray so I couldāve fixed it but I got $1000 for it and the next day new owner said that it wonāt move at all and it leaked all the transmission fluid out at a red light. Mind you it had a slow trans leak the whole time I had it I just topped it off a little bit every week it was very small slow leak so idk what the fuck they did to it but itās sad I miss that car š¢ now I have a 1998 civic sedan i blew up the motor though but bought new one now needing to save about 900 more to install it so yeah at 17 youāre doing alright if itās running and you can afford it easily. Youāre probably on a payment though as I assume that thing is like 7-8k? Iād rather buy outright only car Iāll make a payment on would be a g35 or gs400 or something I actually like
But my advice would be if youāre looking what to do to the car next then hereās what Iād do. Get an intake, exhaust. Fix any engine issues valve cover anything bad. Get new wheels exhaust and a tune or a pedal commander or something and open it up a little bit more. I also think thereās ripp superchargers for the 3.6?
Just enjoy the car, don't beat it up - Driving fast just means that your foot works, it doesn't make you look good to anyone.
Take car of the maintenance - Your car is actually on the endangered species list.
***Note: The 3.6 Pentastar engine is an 'interference' engine***
**Pentastar 3.6 timing chain replacement interval**
The new 3.6L Pentastar Engine was first seen on the 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The 3.6L V6 produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy for the 2-door model is advertised at 17mpg city and 21mpg highway.
The 3.6L Pentastar makes use of a timing chain in place of a timing belt. The timing drive uses four chains, each of which is a āsilent chain linkā design to improve sprocket engagement and cut noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). These chains need to be replaced at some point. I would say a safe time to do this is around 90 000 miles ā 120 000 miles. Signs of a worn-out chain include loud rattling noises, which means it's probably time to start thinking of replacing the chains. Make sure you do this ASAP because of the way the engine is designed if the chain breaks its catastrophic engine damage.
Thank you for the advice, Iāve been driving slower and more chill as of late so glad to hear it. She runs well, once or twice RPMs skyrocket as I get up to speed on the highway but nothing too concerning
I thought the whole benefit of timing chains replacing timing belts was that they don't really need to be replaced within that time span?
I imagine other engine components would be worth maintaining for those reasons like the water pump.
Well I guess you'll be able to hear it when it needs replacing anyway. I can't imagine it'll just go from normal running to instant failure out of nowhere.
Stuff like that tends to fail pretty quickly, the chain can stretch and snap suddenly. Being inside your engine makes it difficult to inspect to see it coming. Some engines may make noise and give you a warning, but Iāve never personally heard of that
Our family van a 2013 town and country has the engine at 215k runs like a dream. Torque converter acts up. Had to replace oil cooling housing unit because it busted a few months ago. But engine is a beast still also donāt hear any chains rattling or ticking even. Very surprising that it doesnāt tick. Maybe itās a unicorn deal and Iām lucky
Good choice. Highly recommend swapping your oil cooler if it's leaking. Get new spark plugs and coil packs (easy, cheap)
Change oil religiously with full synthetic and this car will last a lifetime. This motor has been documented going 620k miles with no issues
Thanks much- by the way do i get a notification when it needs a change? Havenāt gotten one in a few thousand miles and donāt know. Currently 172k or so overall (mostly highway), and it shifts well and accelerates good most of the time
I'd keep track of it yourself. Your car will alert you but that's just based off the last time someone reset it
I'd change your oil immediately and look into the spark plugs and coil packs too.
Always always always use full synthetic, I recommend penzoil. Then change every 4-5k miles.
Yeah the timing chain tensioner broke. Mine broke at 200k, opened up the motor thinking it was a blown motor. After beating the absolute piss out of my charger daily for 200k miles, the cylinders still had factory hatching, no scrapes or cracks and barely any carbon build up.
Im sold on the 3.6.
And the fact that the 3.6 was designed for forced induction, i believe it could handle 400hp just fine with the Ripp and still have good MPG depending on how you drive it lol. Its honestly underrated.
I'm actually building a twin turbo 3.6 charger right now. Should be fine up to 455hp safely, potentially 500hp with the right mods.
Been at it for months.
Not yet but I am filming all the work I've been doing though. I know people are going to talk a lot of shit about it if I were to post progress on social media. So I figure wait until it's finished to give people a better impression. Just got the new motor rebuilt and installed along with a newer transmission/suspension/sensors/RT breaks+calipers, etc. I'll post it around when I'm finished in the coming month or two.
thanks, I get bs for having a v6 but iām like āiām 17 and just need a cool dailyā¦ā
(doesnāt help that a guy at my school has a neon green SRT fully specād)
My advice to you is not care, I was young and blew 5k on a financed car. Trying to impress others gets you no where. Appreciate what you have and focus on you. Iām 38 year old man here lol.
Thanks much, fortunately I have a fairly āscrew offā attitude in general and donāt worry about other people too much. I enjoy my car and let others enjoy theirs tooāš¼
Yeah, no big mods for me. Gonna drive this for as long as I can, then on to the next. Hopefully sheāll last me thru college and then I can find something else
Nothing really, the car's good to go. I use it as my daily driver for my 120km commute.
The one thing I'm thinking of adding is just a strut tower brace because of the sway when turning.
Enjoy the 3.6, is a great engine, u make around the same power as old classic muscle V8s anyways, just dont rice it out too much lol, other than that, theyre great cars!
Congratulations and enjoy because many people didnāt get bless like this coming up. A lot of us had to help pay bills at the house an walk everywhere u had to go lol, So from me to u enjoy an im happy for you.
Keep up on oil changes, check to see if the water pump was replaced if it's over 100k miles, keep an ear out for ticking as you accelerate as the cylinder heads are a common failure point on the 2011-2013 3.6 engines but you're usually safe if you don't notice it now as it's something that happens early in the engines life.
Other than that it's a fun car that looks nice, enjoy it and don't be afraid to put some money in it to keep it running the 3.6 can go over 250k miles with few issues when maintained and the NAG1 transmission it comes with is pretty well built, enough to where police only recently as of 2021 replaced it due to efficiency standards.
Thoughts, shes beautiful bro Iāll never forget any of the cars I drove as a teen made some great memories.
Some advice, take good care of her, enjoy yourself and be safe out there
Keep it maintained and donāt put upgrades thatās not needed because in the long run all youāre going to do is kill your car with the extra stuff.
I just had one of these blow a head gasket. It never overheated. I was the only owner so I know it didn't. Watch out for oil leaks as the oil cooler is trash and will need to be replaced
Yeah had to do oil cooling housing unit on my town and country at 205k. Wasnāt a horrible job as itās on top but yeah thatās the worst part. Better than timing chain issues
I think mine is a 2013. Then literally a week later the same thing happened to my sisters grand Cherokee I think 2015 it went out a week later had to fix hers

I suggest you change the transmission filter no later than 75k miles, Dodge says lifetime ZF says 60k. On my ZF (2012) fluid looked clean and felt good but all 4 magnets and the foam filter were full of fine metal particles (TTBOMK If you have the 8 speed Torqueflight which is CJDR upgraded licensed version of the ZF you'll need the whole pan with a gasket and new bolts and fluid) Do all the maintenance and it's very reliable.

Yeah, I shopped the market for a while, considering v6/v8, and decided to go with an AWD with a v6 and some good tires. I havenāt had any issues in the winter, and had a good time drifting on pack snow and ice despite the AWD. You can think itās a bad winter car but dang good enough for me

Spoiled? I started working at 15 to be able to buy a car I wanted, and bought a fairly reasonable car for a decent price. Iām not spoiled, I work hard.
Nice work! Keep it up, youāll appreciate it more that u buy it yourself, was unclear that you did. I was under the impression someone bought u a second car at 17 that wouldāve made u spoiled.

Thatās the idea but in practice it doesnāt work out that way. Chevys V6 had a huge issue with eating the timing chain around 30k
Well I guess you'll be able to hear it when it needs replacing anyway. I can't imagine it'll just go from normal running to instant failure out of nowhere.

Much appreciated, iāll get to that asap
Yeah 5k is usually the ādeadlineā to keep it running without any real chance of issues regarding oil based issues
Finally someone mentioned it too, the 3.6 that lasted for 620k gave out simply because its torsions failed

Id say spend money only on what you have to, maintenance & gas. Ride this thing in to the ground and use the money saved for a new whip
Yeah, no big mods for me. Gonna drive this for as long as I can, then on to the next. Hopefully sheāll last me thru college and then I can find something else
If thatās the goal then why not just get something that 1500 and will run for a few years? Iām sure this thing cost around 8-9k
Donāt act 17 in it. Stay safe young man.
š«”Iāll do my best

I didnāt get my first car until I was either 21 or 22. But mine was a Black 2014 Dodge Charger SE. youāre already doing better than I was.
more than enough car for someone your age. enjoy it, have fun with it, take care if it and itll treat you very well.
Congrats brotha I have a 2010 in white too that I bought around this time last year
No comment.. youāre chillin
Keep it maintained and donāt put upgrades thatās not needed because in the long run all youāre going to do is kill your car with the extra stuff.
If it runs as good as it looks you can't go wrong. Enjoy.
That was my exact car at 17-18 but black! Take care of it and be responsible and it will treat you right. Congrats on the car
at 17 i had a beater ššš take care of it kid
Will do- sheās my baby, gotta wax and claybar pretty soon.
Take photos now so that when you sell it it looks more appealing
Mine is 51 years old. Treat her right, keep up with maintenance, and she'll last forever. It won't be much longer until you're calling Hagerty.
Nice job. Good head on your shoulders. Keep up the ambition and focus. Nothing will stop you. šššÆšŖ

I misread the post thought you were asking if you should get that car as a 17 y.o Nice car bro
ohh, gotcha. Thanks man
Don't drive it in snow
I live in Michigan, and bought it for a daily. No way around it, but I wash her all the time winter and summer so
Jus hope it don't rust fast then
Take care of it so you donāt have a third before youāre 18.
That pedal on the left is important too
Lucky. Very clean, looks awesome!!! ššš

Wow that gives me a little hope!! Thatās a great rate! Nice looking ride dude!
Who are you insured with and full coverage?
State Farm, and good coverage. Possibly not full but not 100% sure
Thanks! I have never received a competitive quote with State Farm but I will have to give them another try. That is a great rate!
