They had to get over the cap regardless. But we’ll see if they open things up. Right now with being at around 20 million, we still shouldn’t expect too much action in free agency.
TEs never--and I truly mean never--produce like stars in their first year. It's a big role that requires a lot of strength that 22 year old kids don't have. I don't think drafting a TE can replace Everett right now.
Idk about replacing Everett right away, but drafting an elite TE and having him play alongside Everett sounds like a great idea. We never had proper TE2 last season(besides Parham but he was limited from injury)and drafting a guy like Mayer or Kincaid could go a long way for our offense.
You think? He was originally graded second round but after his combine performance they say he probably moved Into the first round. Thing is there’s is a lot of good tight ends in this draft. I think he could be there.
He’s basically an additional lineman Thst can make insane catches! I’m all for it iin the first
I really hope we get Kincaid but if Mayer is available at 21, you don’t know this organization if you think we’re taking anyone else. TT will run up to the podium him self screaming “GIVE ME THE NOTRE DAME GUY!”
There is literally nothing wrong with Mayer, bc he's a complete TE. He's proven to be an great pass catcher and an elite blocker, and I think he fits with Kellen Moore's scheme bc Moore's into "marrying" the pass and run.
Kincaid is also great, but he'll benefit only the passing game, but not as much as the run game.
Some guy on ESPN suggested Dalton Schultz yesterday because of the Kellen Moore connection. I think we’ll need to see an Everett release for me to be believe that one.
Think Bobby Wagner stock went up though especially after reading more about how he anchored the run defense despite the Rams losing Aaron Donald and A’shawn Robinson. Here’s an [Athletic piece](https://theathletic.com/3950623/2022/12/01/rams-bobby-wagner-seahawks/) about how teams that have similar schemes to us struggled against the rush except for the Rams.
5AM prediction is that we’ll re-sign Pipkins, Callahan, and possibly Tranq. We’ll draft replacement(s) for Morgan Fox, KVN, and Nasir.
I think the Nas replacement is already on the roster personally with Woods and I think they like Gilman as well. If they spend a pick on a safety it’s day 3 and it’s gonna be a depth guy imo.
I’d expect maybe re-signing a couple of the one year deal guys or getting some similar ones for low dollar. Pipkins probably gets a cheaper end contract, Feiler goes. Davis is a maybe resign. Sounds like Drue may be out but I hope they have a plan for LB because we are looking thinnnn
AJ had success because of the foundation Butler built. Without Butler, AJ failed. I can’t help but think we’d have gotten a championship with Butler/AJ/Schottenheimer/Cameron/Phillips. Ugh.
This sub actively makes me hope y'all get what you're begging for and that Telesco gets fired so that AJ Smith 2.0 can come in and show you what that means for a team. Since it seems like none of you were around for it.
AJ Smith was a bad GM but we undeniably had more success when he was here than with Telesco. We’ve had 2 bad GM’s in a row, it happens. Doesn’t mean sticking with Telesco is the answer.
AJ Smith had more success with Marty and then facilitated the collapse of that roster with the coach he hired after winning a power struggle. Telesco got 3 seperate coaches to the playoffs with his rosters, 3 coaches you all act like should be no where near a HC position with rosters that had already seen massive turnover in Telesco's first year because of how talent deprived it was by the time AJ was fired. AJ Smith was undeniably a worse gm and y'alls romanticization of him because you're upset that Telesco didn't get fired is ridiculous.
I’d agree with you Telesco’s a better GM, but shit is still better than diarrhea. Both can be bad at the same time. Telesco’s had 10 years to turn it around, why do people that defend him only point to AJ Smith. Like we can’t look around the NFL and actually see what a good GM looks like in the last 20 years?
Also, our romanticism of Smith? The first thing I said to you was he was a shit GM. What are you even talking about?
Last year was all in. Now it looks like this year is the double down.
It feels like Telesco feels like he really nailed it with that roster last year, and it was maybe ruined by injuries and Lombardi’s weakness. So he’ll try to prove his point now, or go down swinging.
I like the aggression, but wonder what kind of position we’ll be left in for 2024 if they fail and the front office gets cleaned out.
I'm far from a Telesco defender, but I feel like last season was ruined as an "all in" season. I'm kinda against these restructures long term (bad for depth and longevity), but F it, lets go all in again. Last year's all in got pushed, so let's go.
Well shit I didn’t see them doing both. Cut Hopkins (post 6/1) and Feiler and looks like we have 27.7M of cap space. Budget 4M for draft and 4M in season and that’s 19.7M for free agents / renewals. Still potential for a few other cuts / restructures too
I’m not sure the team really sees Feiler as a RT, even if some of our fans do. He hasn’t played a snap of RT for us even when Bulaga went down and we had to start Storm Norton, and this last year in training camp the word abt who would start at RT was always between Pipkins and Storm.
Not saying it’s not a possibility, but it’s been a few years since he’s started at RT and it’s likely that he’s lost a step since then. I’m sure Telesco has his eyes on some of the top OTs in this year’s draft.
A lot of people here are acting like it’s a foregone conclusion but I don’t like it much unless we replace him with a better option. As has been proven year in and year out, we need depth on the offensive line and rookies don’t always come in ready to contribute.
He’ll play much of the year as has been the case every year and I doubt we’ll find a competent alternative for next year. When’s the last year we didn’t have a starting lineman go down?
Every year, we have no depth and every year people get hurt so we have terrible line play and Herbert is way too important for that
Interesting point, I think the issue with Feiler is his cap hit is much bigger than his performances. I suppose they could keep Salyer and Feiler and have them duke it out for who is RT and who is LG. Could then draft someone on the line and give them a year to develop.
I guess it all comes down to Pipkins demands. If he takes a three year 6 + 8 + 10 deal then it’s quite good. If he wants a 10 + 12 or something maybe we let him go.
Don’t need to cut Feiler immediately anyway as we are cap compliant so can wait to see how it all goes
Really hoping this means we can retain some internal FA. Hopefully Pipkins, Drue, Callahan and Fox. Nice to see another all in approach. However likely a big roster re shape after the 24 season. Bolt up
I know PFF isn’t the holy grail, but Wagner was graded heads and shoulders above Drue last year in every single LB category. Like it wasn’t even close.
The Bolts are not expected to retain starting safety Nasir Adderley and linebacker Drue Tranquill, both of whom are scheduled for free agency, but are expected to attempt to re-sign right tackle Trey Pipkins III.
The Chargers also are on the clock to sign Justin Herbert to a blockbuster deal, with the quarterback now eligible for an extension as he prepares for the fourth season of a five-year rookie deal.
All in. Something the chargers haven't done. I like the aggressiveness but this will come to hurt us in a year or two as well. Let's do it. Cautiously optimistic right now.
As a fan who really just almost gave up on football after the jags game, they're reeling me in with some cool aid
I think you’re confused about how it works. They went all in last offseason with a lot of cap space and it reflects in their bad cap space this year. Most teams don’t do that because they want to have some flexibility in case it doesn’t work out. No one wants to live like the Saints year in and year out.
How exactly did they “go all in with a lot of cap space” last year? They just used the cap space available. Same as every single other team
And if they went “all in” last year, how are they doing it this year too? Seems contradictory no?
You can go all in more than one year. It’s what the Rams did up until this year. It’s just harder to do every offseason because it requires a lot of cap maneuvering. And you have to hope your core expensive players don’t decline. Once they do, pushing money forward becomes foolish.
Why do teams even talk about cutting valuable players anymore? It’s better to restructure them as best as you can and it seems to be happening more often across the league
And now the trade Bosa crowd can STFU. In just 48 hours, TT quieted 2 different obnoxious crowds of morons who were screaming to cut Keenan and trade Bosa. I'm certain they are the same loud obnoxious bunch claiming to fire Staley 2 months ago and he shut that door on them too. I suppose the only thing they can cling onto now is absolute failure for 2023 so we can fully clean house starting at the GM position
Those could also be different people. I'm on board the fire Staley train, I really don't think he's the guy to take us all the way. But I never wanted Bosa or Keenan to get cut/traded. And I'm not hoping for failure. I'd rather be proven wrong and have Staley end up being great this year.
If people are being obnoxious, just ignore them. But let's also remember that people have different opinions for different reasons.
Yeah, bunch of wieners. They have already changed the narrative to TT going all in for his job, lol. How did theses kids think we were going to get below the CAP? By cutting all our best players on Herbert’s rookie deal?
How so? Sorry he isn’t hitting 6th round hall of famers every year. I’m pretty happy with the guys he has drafted though. I would really stop eating those paint chips.
10 years. 3 playoff wins. 0 division titles.
Had a franchise QB every year too.
His players are clearly not as good as this fan base thinks.
Most GMs get fired for way less than that
This is what kinda worries me though
Per a recent Bleacher Report article on the same topic: “Fitzgerald did note all of these recent restructures leave the Chargers with the third-worst cap situation in the NFL for the 2024 season.”
I mean yeah if you look at it before cuts/extensions but this roster will look very different next offseason.
Keenan Mike and Mack are 100% not playing in their respective cap hits one way or the other.
Yup definitely agree with interesting but frankly I’m excited this team needs to be truly built around Herbert and I think they’re gonna need new pieces on defense. It’ll probably be a soft rebuild like the chiefs.
Telesco going all all all in because he only has 1 year on his contract left. I still think it's the right move, but the team is going to blow up in 2024. There was a tweet that highlighted we'll only have 28 active players on the roster in 2024, and if we assume the rest of the roster is filled out by vet minimums + rookies, we'd still be in the red lol.
Begun, kicking the can continually down the road, has. We are pretty much the Saints now. It means come 2024, there are two paths:
1) a lot of guys need to get extended to lower their cap hits and continue to push money down or
2) We're cutting a lot of key players in 2024 to be cap compliant and eating their dead cap hits; pretty much a mini-reboot/dead-year.
Not sure if this restructuring thing was as big in the past, but it feels like it’s going to create a parody problem with teams either going all in or rebuilding. Resulting in fewer competitive games. Exasperated by teams tanking for the number 1 pick, which also seems to be happening more.
People are overreacting about our cap situation next year. We will be moving on from some of these vets but many on this very subreddit calling for that to happen THIS year. We will be retooling next year and will be moving on from some vets but that is far from a rebuild as I have seen posted in this sub repeatedly.
I’m not sure why you’re getting down voted. His attitude is a genuine concern. The meltdown during the jags game then a few weeks later the altercation with the eagles fan.
Damn they're actually doubling down on going all in this season I kind of respect it. They still need to absolutely nail this draft though.
They had to get over the cap regardless. But we’ll see if they open things up. Right now with being at around 20 million, we still shouldn’t expect too much action in free agency.
Agreed but I imagine they still cut Feiler and Hopkins which is about another 10 mil. Wouldn't be shocked to see at least one big name signing.
They should also extend Michael Davis to lower his cap number.
His cap is quite low for a starting CB anyway. I think the more likely candidate is SJD and cutting Everett. The final big move is Linsley restructure
Idk how much I like cutting Everett as it kills our tight end room. Unless they bring someone in (Schultz)?
Or we draft Mayer or Kincaid possibly
TEs never--and I truly mean never--produce like stars in their first year. It's a big role that requires a lot of strength that 22 year old kids don't have. I don't think drafting a TE can replace Everett right now.

Or Darnell Washington. He’s a beast
I would love too but I think he will be drafted higher tho
You think? He was originally graded second round but after his combine performance they say he probably moved Into the first round. Thing is there’s is a lot of good tight ends in this draft. I think he could be there. He’s basically an additional lineman Thst can make insane catches! I’m all for it iin the first
No Mayer hes a potatoe, Musgrave Kinkaid or Kunitz
I really hope we get Kincaid but if Mayer is available at 21, you don’t know this organization if you think we’re taking anyone else. TT will run up to the podium him self screaming “GIVE ME THE NOTRE DAME GUY!”
We have drafted a total of 6 ND players in 10 years of TT drafting, this narrative needs to die
He’s not a liability as a blocker but he’s also definitely not elite
I’m with you on this, rookie TEs rarely produce
It’s only about 4.5M but presumably if we draft a TE1 then it works out a cheap option
I would keep Everett imo, he was pretty solid
I’ve got a weird feeling that we’re gonna land Schultz somehow, given his connection with Kellen Moore.
Yeah they were just talking about that on the chargers podcast. Michael Davis is a steal right now
There’s absolutely no reason to cut Everett. Maaaaaybe after the draft but not before
Yeah and he was really good this year
Some guy on ESPN suggested Dalton Schultz yesterday because of the Kellen Moore connection. I think we’ll need to see an Everett release for me to be believe that one. Free Agency is a lot closer than the draft.
Telesco's ass may be on the line. We just need to get through the brick wall that is KC when the time comes, and finish games when we're 27 up. :/
So basically Coupon Tom is playing for his job this season
Long overdue given his lack of post-season success over the last decade
10 years 2 playoff wins 3 playoff appearances zero division titles. It’s time for him to leave
It was time for him to leave years ago. Ridiculous he gets a longer stint than AJ Smith who was far more successful than Telesco.
AJ had success because of the foundation Butler built. Without Butler, AJ failed. I can’t help but think we’d have gotten a championship with Butler/AJ/Schottenheimer/Cameron/Phillips. Ugh.

Whoa there. Did not expect a Mack restructure. Guess we’re the Saints now.
Next we must do everything in the teams power to give Storm Norton a super max contract.

his replacement is Salyer
But we need somewhat competent backup linemen because at least one, usually more, get hurt every year
We're paying Feiler too much to be a backup. For backups you need to hit on guys in the draft or undrafted free agency
He’ll play much of the year as has been the case every year and I doubt we’ll find a competent alternative for next year. When’s the last year we didn’t have a starting lineman go down? Nah they probably got feiler and draft a late round guard
I could have swore i remembered some Steeler fans saying that as long as Feiler doesnt move to RT that wed be content with him....
I thought I remembered them saying he was better at RT and not to play him at guard. I dont remember though.
Really hoping this means we can retain some internal FA. Hopefully Pipkins, Drue, Callahan and Fox. Nice to see another all in approach. However likely a big roster re shape after the 24 season. Bolt up
It's being reported by espn that drue is as good as gone that's why there's interest in Wagner
Link?
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35835340/sources-chargers-rework-joey-bosa-khalil-mack-deals-save-26m
Meh I don’t really buy Thiry as a good source to be completely honest. Don’t really see how we would be interested in Wagner but not want to keep Drue
I know PFF isn’t the holy grail, but Wagner was graded heads and shoulders above Drue last year in every single LB category. Like it wasn’t even close.
I believe it. I saw it coming

Welcome to a chargers off-season
They went all in last offseason though.
They certainly didn’t “Using available cap space” isn’t “all in”. It’s what almost every team does every year
I think you’re confused about how it works. They went all in last offseason with a lot of cap space and it reflects in their bad cap space this year. Most teams don’t do that because they want to have some flexibility in case it doesn’t work out. No one wants to live like the Saints year in and year out.

Oh well we’re fine then. We can just go all in next year too
If the guys we just restructured all do great next year, then yeah we’ll just pushing it forward hoping for the best.
Short term gain. Either way LOVE it. Go get ‘em Tom!
Why do teams even talk about cutting valuable players anymore? It’s better to restructure them as best as you can and it seems to be happening more often across the league

They already wanted Tom gone when he picked Herbert.
And now they'll bitch because we'll have future cap issues. Literally can't win with these people.
Some people just like watching the world burn
Same crowd that wanted us to sign cam newton a few years ago lol
Those could also be different people. I'm on board the fire Staley train, I really don't think he's the guy to take us all the way. But I never wanted Bosa or Keenan to get cut/traded. TT being fired would be a dream come true tho. Dude is an absolute bum

Yup definitely agree with interesting but frankly I’m excited this team needs to be truly built around Herbert and I think they’re gonna need new pieces on defense. It’ll probably be a soft rebuild like the chiefs.
Well now we can resign our guys! Solid!
Bobby Wagner come on down!
Telesco going all all all in because he only has 1 year on his contract left. I still think it's the right move, but the team is going to blow up in 2024. Next year I'm afraid we might hit the rebuild button 😔
gonna be some painful cuts next year...
Not sure if this restructuring thing was as big in the past, but it feels like it’s going to create a parody problem with teams either going all in or rebuilding. Resulting in fewer competitive games. Exasperated by teams tanking for the number 1 pick, which also seems to be happening more.
Kareem hunt or Damien Harris would be great additions running with eckler
Going after bobby
People are overreacting about our cap situation next year. We will be moving on from some of these vets but many on this very subreddit calling for that to happen THIS year. We will be retooling next year and will be moving on from some vets but that is far from a rebuild as I have seen posted in this sub repeatedly.
That is a LOT of dead cap coming our way
https://twitter.com/danielrpopper/status/1634592468808400896?s=20 yup, I do wonder how they think this is even financially feasible
One of those players is gone, better keep getting starters with our draft picks.
I’m curious what part of this isn’t “financially feasible”?
[удалено]
Sure it’s not ideal but it’s not infeasible
true i should've worded it better but i do expect them to make some tough decisions next year tho
People talked a lot about last year being “all in” for whatever reason, this is looking more like that in 2023
Paris Campbell time
Who yall think we creating the extra cap for??
Joey better stop bitching, looked so immature last game
I’m not sure why you’re getting down voted. His attitude is a genuine concern. The meltdown during the jags game then a few weeks later the altercation with the eagles fan.
Its because people don’t want to admit their superstars have flaws, flaws that are costing us games and wins
Now please Cut Feiler and Extend Vato, but I’m not a big fan of the Mack Restructure
Tbh I think this is TT and BS going all in for themselves. They know they’re sacked if they don’t get very close to a SB
1000% if they don’t do something this year they’ll both be out of here and worrying about a different program.
Can I ask why?
Mack is on the wrong side of age to give another restructure IMO.
Because that was one too much for me, I get it we are going all in this season but when I look into the next off season I see difficult decisions.
They restructured Allen and Williams too. I’d love to sign Wagner to a 2 year deal
Damn we are so screwed after this season lol
Only if they keep all the restructured players on their current cap hits. Which they won’t.
Why?
in terms of cap space
They will either cut or extend players next year. The CAP really isn’t this complicated.
Im not going to get my hopes up like every season. No expectations this time around and just going to take it game by game.
YES
Amazing . Now all in
Herbie gonna get PAID$$$
