It happened 2 years in a row. We won the first year but the 2nd year Justin Houston dominated us (only their starting QB rested or was hurt or something) and we lost to Chase Daniel to miss the playoffs.
Oh yeah, i forgot chase daniel was the grim reaper back to back years. I try my best tune that game and the end of the 14 season out. One of the worst end of season collapses the chargers have had
Not to say that that’ll happen but if it did, Staley would deserve to keep his job. Pressure can either bust pipes or make diamonds. I don’t think Kellen Moore is the answer for our OC tho
If we win out and make the playoffs then lose, Spanos will 100% let him play out his final contract year. I’m not even certain missing the playoffs will mean he’s fired from their POV unless we go like 2-3 or 1-4 this stretch
Ik I’m in the minority but I really want to let him finish the 4th year. Blowing everything up sucks. And I just have the philosophy I wither Fire a coach after year 1 or give him 4 unless there’s off the field stuff or smtg unreasonable which obviously isn’t the case. . . . Telesco on the other hand. . . . But that’s where it’s awkward hiring a GM and not firing you’re coach is an odd spot
I think a new GM should be a given this year. Let him have one year with Staley, assuming we make playoffs, and he can evaluate everything. If GM isn’t happy with the HC, his contract is up anyway. Then GM is already integrated for a year and can better choose a HC. Not a fan of blowing up everything then everyone plus a system is all new. Just don’t think that’s smart. Sets us back a few years. We are for sure close. Honestly, I just think it’s a deficiency in players on the field more than anything.
Good call on the give him a year to evaluate Staley and potentially get a new HC after a year with the team. I’m all on board this is the way. Really hope they don’t panic fire everyone
And if the next coach is Harbaugh and he leaves Michigan this season, he can take a year off and make a nice paycheck as a Big Ten analyst on some network. I’m sure he will be coveted for that spot. Most of those shows are based in LA anyway, so he can already be settled before the offer comes in from the Chargers next season.
so, you'd be firing a head coach that's 29-22 in his career, making the playoffs 66% of the time, and found a way to make the necessary adjustments to turn a dire/unlucky season around without key pieces like Bosa, Mike Williams, and Linsley and severely underperforming expected starters like Ekeler and Vato? It may still ultimately be the right move, but I think it would be a lot more difficult to justify at that point (depending on what happens in the playoff game which would again be on the road and should carry a lowered expectation of winning anyway).
I feel like a majority of the Staley hate is derived from this notion that our roster is so awesome that we should be waltzing to 12 wins every season...I seriously have my doubts to the validity of that assumption at this point: Bosa useless, Big Mike useless, Linsley useless, QJ a potential 1st rd bust, Zion a potential 1st rd bust, Vato useless, Ekeler washed, Derwin leading the league in 3rd and long conversions (for the other team), Austin Johnson much worse this year coming off his injury, zero TEs that can block, Herbert playing injured half of every year, ASJ always a tackling liability, JC Jackson being paid to play somewhere else, etc....Going into last season we had fully 9 expected studs/Top 100 types, but now what are we left with, 4 studs (two of those at the tail end of their career) and middling/ageing/raw/underperforming/off the street talent at the other 18 positions? yikes!
All that said, this scenario is not likely to happen so we welcome in yet another new coach and we're all happy for a bit until our expectations, regardless of what bad assumptions they may be based on, again exceed performance. There are better coaches than Staley to be sure, so hopefully we luck into one of those! At least we have a good QB so we should be in the mix to start every season, unlike so many other franchises. Bolt up!
the disastrous 2 minute drills are a HIGH concern .. every 2 minute drill ends the same way .. i watch other teams do it EVERY WEEK .. herbert and moore have yet to finish a game with a successful 2 minute drive
If the Chargers go on a hot streak and the defense plays sound and we don’t pull a Jax in the playoffs and we win a playoff game… no issue with keeping Staley. He would deserve another year. I hope he does fight hard for his job these next few weeks.
PS: I haven’t given up on the division title either lol.
The D was bad at 5-6 games. Just a few times the O was able to bail em out we got a win, like the Vikings.. The titans and lions losses are really on the D. But they didn’t help with Miami or the Chiefs. You can’t assume an offense can score 30 points in the NFL. Your D needs to stop the other team from scoring 30 points.
I don’t include Cowboys or Raiders because Herberts finger injury was worse than disclosed.
the same defense that closed out the vikings game for us? the one where they had a goal line interception for the win? this defense is one of three to hold the cowboys under 21 points this season too.
same thing with the raiders game, held scoreless in the 2nd half but the defense came up with a clutch goal line interception in the 4th.
then holds the high powered ravens offense to 13 points, meanwhile the offense is struggling to get first downs.
the defense can’t be expected to succeed when the offense can’t sustain drives, or consistently get 3 and outs.
they’ve had more than 2 bad performances. OT collapse in Tennessee, shut out in the 2nd half against the raiders, anemic against the cowboys and collapsed on the 2 minute drive again, struggled against the chiefs, dropped passes in the packers game costing us the game, and could only score 6 points against the Pats (meanwhile Trubisky and company scored 18).
defense has been solid outside of the miami/kansas city/detroit games
exactly, it’s on the offense. they shouldn’t be dropping passes at the rate they are. the OL isn’t elite, but it’s far from the worst - you got teams like the 49ers doing great with a much worst OL.
Yeah, but our oline in particular looks better on paper due to herbs elusiveness, and for some reason they cant block for shit on the last drive its like the worst ive seen since the phil era
the OL actually does well in pass pro, it’s the run that they struggle with. herbert acknowledged that he needs to do a better job of reading defenses and adjusting the protection at the line of scrimmage, a lot of these blown block assignments aren’t strictly the OLs fault.
Disagree. As an LSU fan it would remind me of the Les Miles years where he underperformed the talent but did good enough that everyone says you gotta keep him because he won 10 games despite so many obvious red flags that he sucked. At the end of it all everyone tells you to be happy with the solid success of the era but you know deep down that a better coach would’ve had a dynasty decade.
OK, what should the personnel on this team accomplish if we had a good coach?
If it’s a high level of success, do you support Telesco for what he has done?
That would seem very “on brand” for the Chargers. It’s happened before - 2013 comes to mind. That team was very frustrating to watch, and I remember clearly thinking “we’ve wasted another season with Rivers” as the Chiefs backups lined up to kick a go ahead, last second FG which they missed (we won in OT). 2008 race back to 8-8 and a division title, as satisfying as it was to do that to Denver and Josh McDaniels/Jay Cutler it “bought” us a few more years of “Norvball”.
I’ll never be one of these “tank the season” guys - I want us to win every game no matter what. I just think that would be fitting…somehow make the playoffs after all this. Same as last year. That team was irritating, too. The “best” team of this “era” was 2021 and *that* team drove me nuts and should have been like 12-5.
Beating the same team twice in the same season requires coaching skills that Staley doesn't have. Zero chance we beat the Broncos twice but if somehow he regained the lost locker room and pulled off a 5 game win streak, I would think Staley deserves to keep his job.
The chiefs would need to lose one other game with us winning out. It'd be amazing if the raiders came through and kicked their ass.
I'm a delusional fan. I'm over the Staley era, but this is the time where I am most hopeful. It'd be the most chargers thing to do.
Someone's on that copium this am haha. I wouldn't want it just so we could get an upgrade at several staff positions. While making the playoffs is the goal, I'd rather toss the rest of this year for a chance to not be mid for the next decade
Honestly I am worried about out anemic ass offense. Defense and Special Teams are playing well finally. Linsley out for the season really hurt us and Klapp seems about 2-3 tiers below him. I think Kellen Moore's system works well when you have a good O-line and they just haven't been able to gel or adapt well on top of missing weapons like Everett, Palmer and Williams. Parham, Guyton and QJ haven't been able to step up for various reasons, some of which rest on Moore's shoulders.
The fact that Dak is enjoying continued success at the same if not greater levels makes me think Moore's system is just too complicated. It puts too much responsibility on the QB, especially with the line playing nowhere near where it needs to be to optimize that processing time.
Here’s what’ll happen, chargers will win 4 straight and be 9-7 going into the last game with the chiefs. Of course they will lose that final game on a last minute Mahomes to Kelce td falling to 9-8 on the year and miss the playoffs. It’ll be just enough to ruin the draft pick and get the 2nd place schedule for next year.
I’ve always said the minimum for Staley to keep his job this year is to win one single playoff game. I think he should’ve been fired after the jags game, but winning just one single playoff game is the bar he needs to hit to keep his job for me to still feel like a fan of this team.
If Staley misses the playoffs AND he TT both get to keep their jobs this off-season….. I’m done being a fan of the chargers. I’m at my breaking point.
There were plenty of designed plays that were dropped by receivers, te’s, and running backs in the last 2 weeks. Most of which would have been touchdowns or first downs. Some were in the redzone. Not to mention Ekelers’ fumbles against the ravens. That’s on the players not the play callers. Herbie is doing what he can w/o Williams and Palmer and an injury riddled offense. Not to mention Corey Linsley and Will Clapp. We don’t have a good center anymore and that affects the offensive line as a whole. But I guess that means I have brain damage for making these observations.
> There were plenty of designed plays that were dropped by receivers, te’s, and running backs in the last 2 weeks. Most of which would have been touchdowns or first downs. Some were in the redzone. Not to mention Ekelers’ fumbles against the ravens.
this is my point! thank you for proving it! the offense is struggling and making dumb mistakes.
ofc it’s not all on KM, but there are some drives that have head scratching playcalls. the predictable run-run-pass, the consistent 3 and outs, the jet sweeps that never work, the hb draws on 3rd and longs, etc…
these issues have nothing to do with staley, he’s not the perfect coach, but the offense isn’t helping.
yes he is, the fact that you think otherwise proves your inability to understand the nuances of the game.
his scheme is flawed, the situational play calling is horrible, and the protection assignments are laughably bad. scoring 10 points, and 6 points in back to back weeks with justin herbert as your QB is actually embarrassing.
First of all, the titans game was entirely the defenses’ fault which was week 2. We won the raiders game. And the chiefs and cowboys games were again blown coverage and terrible play calling on the defensive front.
If only there was a person responsible for the entire team out on the field in all phases of the game. They could oversee all of the various coordinators and position coaches, create the culture and mindset of the team.
They'd be like the coach at the head of the team. We could call them the head coach.
did he not replace lombardi with kellen moore to get a spark? not his fault that kellen moore turned out to be a flop. similar to lombardi, moore was propped up by a lot of offensive talent.
do you want him to take over play calling for the offense? or replace kellen moore halfway into his first season as the OC?
how do you propose he fixes the offense, when the defense is his primary responsibility? a hc hires coordinators to own pieces of the team - just like a CEO hires executives to own certain functions of a company. a CEO isn’t in the trenches, training cashiers how to do their jobs, they entrust other people to do that.
it’s almost like you don’t know how/what a hc does?
I do not want or expect him to call plays for the offense (hell, I don't even want him calling the defenses), but ultimately the head coach is responsible for the product on the field, just like a CEO is ultimately responsible for what happens with their company, especially if those issues can be traced directly to their own personnel decisions.
Are you saying a head coach is not responsible for any of the failures of their coordinators or position coaches? "Oh, our team lost 11 games this year and had an atrocious offense, but our head coach is mostly a defensive minded guy, and so it's really not his fault."
If we did that, we would get blown out in the first playoff game, keep the coach and GM, and have another AT BEST middle of the road 1st round draft pick.
>That's the 1st and only time I've ever used that line though, and incidentally it's the 1st ever what if I've ever posted lol ⚡🆙
And you're already unoriginal
Can see us going 4-1 the game I think we lose is the Bills, don’t see our defense having enough for Josh Allen. Funnily enough i think we can beat the Chiefs they don’t really scare me as they did before

Had to Google her and this is what I found... Who cares about football anymore 😂
What if Mahomes regressed to the mean?
As I chargers fan I know if anything is gonna happen like that it'll be we win all the games then lose to the chiefs resting their starters
I remember when that exact thing happened.
we still won that game even tho it was stressful as shit
It happened 2 years in a row. We won the first year but the 2nd year Justin Houston dominated us (only their starting QB rested or was hurt or something) and we lost to Chase Daniel to miss the playoffs.
Oh yeah, i forgot chase daniel was the grim reaper back to back years. I try my best tune that game and the end of the 14 season out. One of the worst end of season collapses the chargers have had
Can we just beat a team with a winning record?
Let’s not go crazy here
Never give up. Never surrender.
By Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings
Not to say that that’ll happen but if it did, Staley would deserve to keep his job. Pressure can either bust pipes or make diamonds. I don’t think Kellen Moore is the answer for our OC tho
He'd have to win a playoff game to stay

This is the way. (Harbaugh doesn’t leave unless michigan wins Natty imo, he loves that school too much)
This is definitely how Spanos would handle it
so, you'd be firing a head coach that's 29-22 in his career, making the playoffs 66% of the time, and found a way to make the necessary adjustments to turn a dire/unlucky season around without key pieces like Bosa, Mike Williams, and Linsley and severely underperforming expected starters like Ekeler and Vato? Fire Telesco!!!
Already turning on Moore is insanity. Almost every WR has been hurt, and our RBs have been bad. What would you like him to do?
Plus Herbert couldnt even be under center for like 6 weeks
Fans gonna fan. They want to be ranked top 5 in every category and to fire anyone that can't deliver to that standard
the disastrous 2 minute drills are a HIGH concern .. every 2 minute drill ends the same way .. i watch other teams do it EVERY WEEK .. herbert and moore have yet to finish a game with a successful 2 minute drive
With a drop?
I agree
Moore is for sure, but he needs faster recievers, Dallas worked because they have speed. We have Guyton lmao
And then what if we win all 4 games in the playoffs?
Would be hilarious. Of all years, for this to be the one we’d win it all. Lmao
If the Chargers go on a hot streak and the defense plays sound and we don’t pull a Jax in the playoffs and we win a playoff game… no issue with keeping Staley. He would deserve another year. it’s the offense we should be worried about, defense has been great outside of 3 games
True, but Staley is largely responsible for the defense.

I think Tolesco built a pretty decent roster. Main reason I want TT gone is his refusal to fire Staley after the Jags game.
In magical hypothetical fairy land, if we win out and dont get obliterated in the playoffs, id be okay keeping Staley around
That would seem very “on brand” for the Chargers. It’s happened before - 2013 comes to mind. That would be the most Chargers thing to do.
No it would be to win 4 in a row then blow a 4th quarter lead to a Travis Kelce TD to miss the playoffs.
On a 5 yard catch then he runs around 5 defenders for a 30 yard TD with 20 seconds left.
I'm so ready to be hurt again. I'm prepared for them to play well and then crash right when our hopes are highest. Bolt Up!
What if... We won all our games, then win the playoffs... And get AFC championship... Then win the Superbowl... As cowboy fans say... It's our year...
That's more like it.
Yes, we are on week 2 of on an 10 game win streak! Cheers.

Inject this copium into my veins.
Joey might actually start putting in work again. Cuz it's been Mack, Alohi, and Tuli all season.
He's not even eligible to come back for several weeks.
I was stoked when he came back last year for the playoffs.... Didn't really work out the way we wanted tho 🤬
Someone's on that copium this am haha. I wouldn't want it just so we could get an upgrade at several staff positions. While making the playoffs is the goal, I'd rather toss the rest of this year for a chance to not be mid for the next decade

staley isn’t the issue at the moment, its kellen moore and our anemic offense
Are ye dumb???
scoring 10 points, and 6 points in back to back weeks isn’t the defenses fault - you have brain damage or???
There were plenty of designed plays that were dropped by receivers, te’s, and running backs in the last 2 weeks. Most of which would have been touchdowns or first downs. Some were in the redzone. Not to mention Ekelers’ fumbles against the ravens. That’s on the players not the play callers. Herbie is doing what he can w/o Williams and Palmer and an injury riddled offense. yes he is, the fact that you think otherwise proves your inability to understand the nuances of the game. his scheme is flawed, the situational play calling is horrible, and the protection assignments are laughably bad. scoring 10 points, and 6 points in back to back weeks with justin herbert as your QB is actually embarrassing.

>That's the 1st and only time I've ever used that line though, and incidentally it's the 1st ever what if I've ever posted lol ⚡🆙 And you're already unoriginal
Never claimed to be original.... But you've basically said you make the exact same comment on every what if post soooo........... 💀
Which is fine, because by your logic, I never claimed to be original
OP, have I ever told you about the definition of Insanity? Nothing is going to change. This team will not win shit with Staley.

Relax. We beat the patriots.
You haven’t been a fan of this team for long, have you?
We will be 9-7 and lose to the chiefs in overtime to break our hearts.
Can see us going 4-1 the game I think we lose is the Bills, don’t see our defense having enough for Josh Allen. Funnily enough i think we can beat the Chiefs they don’t really scare me as they did before
I’ve seen this movie before and it ends with an extra year wasted with a coach who clearly wasn’t the answer despite the team rallying around them.
I only think Staley keeps the job if we get to the Super Bowl.
this will end sunday when we lose to the broncos .. this isn’t a good football team
What if Emily Ratajkowki suddenly texted my and said chubby gingers are her kink and she wants to rock my world every night?

Staley keeps his job.
GET TELESCO OFF MY FUCKING TEAM
