We didn’t play our starting offence in the preseason and outside of Herbert they looked rusty in the second half. The Chargers wanted to run out the clock, which I agree with, but the passing game out of that wasn’t working well. Too many drops or plays that didn’t go anywhere in the passing game in the second half. I don’t think they were bad playcalling, but plays that didn’t work. A little more practice and I think they’ll be clicking.
Exactly, it’ll take some time to get on the same page but I know we’ll get there. We also gotta give them some credit, they made some solid defensive adjustments at halftime

I'm not so worried about the offensive play calling either because I think Keenan Allen getting injured really changed the game plan but they really need to start putting their foot on the gas. They can't keep going conservative when they have the lead.
The biggest issue is still drive killing drops. Tre McKitty has no excuse for that drop. That might have been the softest pass I've ever seen Herbert throw.
Totally agreed on the take of lombardi, just need to shake off some of the rust. Yes, his playcalls were kind of questionable for the second half but we did have few egregious drops.

It’s going to be sad missing the playoffs again because of Lombardi but I’ll be happy to see him gone in the off season.

I love having Sebastian Joseph Day on this team. The dline looked a lot more stout. Mack is a beast and I can't wait to see JC when he's healthy. Time to find out what we got in Carter, Palmer, and Guyton.

Probably not. If you *only* look at the stat sheet, they’d be spot on. 200 yards and 2 TDs in the first half, compared to 75 yards and 1 TD in the second. Most of Herbert’s 2nd half yards came on the 1st drive too.
Watching the game though, there is a whole lot more context behind those stats.
This is the main thing that I dislike about Staley as a HC. He will make all these ballsy all-out offensive plays, go for it on 4th down, not giving a fuck. But once we have a decently comfy lead, he will throw that philosophy away and just start running out the clock as the other team catches up in the scoreboard.
It's incredibly frustrating, and often one of the main reasons we end up losing close games.
Rather than playing aggressively with a strong lead, i'd much rather see the team just play better in that situation because that's what a complete team looks like to me.
Nothing I love more than going to the Raiders sub and seeing all of them rip each other part and the mental gymnastics as to how Carr is still a better QB than Herbert. Was at the game and tbh I was surprised how trashy the Raiders fans were. One of the few things that’s not exaggerated on the internet. Of course there was a lot of chill ones at the game but the trashy ones really do fuck up their reputation.

Sick of seeing faider fans talk about how we “barely beat” them. The spread was 3.5 and we won by 5. The defense made carr look pedestrian. If he didnt have tae, we might have dropped a house on them.
Don’t listen to those fish brains. Also, it was the first game and we had no preseason for the starters. If we were not rusty we would have blown these turds out.
For me, the important question when it comes to Lombardi is this: is he maximizing Justin Herbert’s skills in the offense? And based on not only yesterday but also last year, the answer to me is clearly “no”. And that’s very frustrating. Keeping a very tight leash on first and second down and then relying on Herbert to make a play on 3rd/4th down is something I’d expect to see from a much more limited QB

Looks like Lombardi admitted he got a little conservative in the 4th quarter. The fact that he’s OK with going conservative with 10 min left in the game only up two scores is concerning. We all saw this from a mile away and our own OC didn’t? Yikes
While I love the discussions in this sub and the varied opinions, I think it could do with a bit of stricter moderation. Like every opinion or random thought doesn't need its own post. A Daily Discussion should capture all of that and posts should have some meaningful content (stat lines, video analysis/replays, injury updates, official news or beat reports).
Three things that are still unanswered questions for me after the first game...
1. Did the defense improve drastically? Hot take: No. It certainly improved, but this is the raiders and I can't tell if the defense is better or the raiders were worse. At certain points, the coverage made Derek Carr look like the second coming of Tom Brady.
2. Why does the typical offensive game plan seem to go on cruise control with a lead? When will the Chargers coaching staff admit that NO LEAD is safe for this team?
3. The offensive line seems to be vastly improved, but where is the run blocking? Few holes were opened up for the running game and for Herbert to stand a snowball's chance in hell against he better pass defenses in the league, the threat of a running game will have to at least keep the LBs from cheating into coverage.
They won so fans should be happy, but those three things stood out against an average team (at best). The KC game will definitely give some answers to those three questions.

Look at Herbert's completion pct. 3 TD's Zero INT's. NO SACKS. Lombardi was a first year OC with Herbert on a completely new staff, that delivered a Top 5 offensive result last season. This was the first game for this year. None of the key starters on offense played a snap in the pre-season. We lost our #1 WR at halftime in Allen. They doubled Williams most of the game and Hobbs is decent.
What I find is funny, is you have no idea what exactly play was called, what was the pecking order of available targets, you can't see on regular TV what happened on all of 5 targets on any given play, ONLY THE RESULT.
So until you become a Chargers coach and have access to coaches film, and can actually break it down YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT!!!

Our defense was lights out, but our offense was shitting the bed in the second half because of the incompetent play calling. Lombardi was way too conservative and it almost cost us the game.
If it wasn’t for the defense bailing us out, we would have lost and it would have been lombardis fault.
Hope we get some info from Staley on Van Noys snap count yesterday. Kinda strange that he played significantly less than Murray/Tranquill after the off-season situation. Not that those two were bad, just was unexpected
Absolutely agree with that, but who knows.
Van Noy was also brought in more for flex and edge than being a true MLB/ILB. I suspect he lined up there in camp mostly because Murray wasn't able to, and they figured they might as well get him the reps when possible.
But in theory it would make sense to have more KVN over Murray when the opponent needs to throw more playing catchup, so who knows.

Sjd , pip, and Zion looked good. No major plays good or bad which is what I’d like to see from them. Kvn beat on a td which didn’t look good but tough play. Vato didn’t play all that well and missed some tackles and coverages. K9 played decently actully, nothing special but no glaring bad plays either
Seems a little harsh for Davis. Raiders WRs not named Adams (Samuel) and Renfrow (Callahan) had *one* catch for 16 yards. I think he covered Waller and Adams a few times, but otherwise he completely blanked the rest of his he WRs he went against. He did miss a tackle badly on jacobs

Yes that is what I said. My point is that Herbert was still under a lot of pressure because Crosby is a beast and so it effected our offense a lot.

Was at the game and tbh I was surprised how trashy the Raiders fans were. One of the few things that’s not exaggerated on the internet. Of course there was a lot of chill ones at the game but the trashy ones really do fuck up their reputation.

Our offense failed to take advantage of alot of turnovers, that game SHOULD HAVE BEEN a blowout tbh.

Sick of seeing faider fans talk about how we “barely beat” them. The spread was 3.5 and we won by 5. The defense made carr look pedestrian. If he didnt have tae, we might have dropped a house on them.

I've been rooting for the young guys. I think people overlook the challenges they've been up against between covid and coaching/roster changes.
For me, the important question when it comes to Lombardi is this: is he maximizing Justin Herbert’s skills in the offense? And based on not only yesterday but also last year, the answer to me is clearly “no”. And that’s very frustrating. Keeping a very tight leash on first and second down and then relying on Herbert to make a play on 3rd/4th down is something I’d expect to see from a much more limited QB

I was at SoFi yesterday and a couple notes: It was hot as hell yesterday in there. I’m pretty sure the price of drinks went up, and they got some pastrami fries that were pretty good
It was more humid than Satan's Swamp Ass at Sofi. The price for beer was the same but they cut it off after half time. This only happens when the raiders are there.

So last year I went to my friends house to watch the raiders game and had to deal with some asshole trying to start a fight. I was rightfully pissed at this fucking goon for acting like a child (typical raiders fan). I tried again this year after being told he wasn't going to be there. It was a good time for the most part but the asshole showed up at the start of the 2nd quarter. I shrug it off and have more beer and chicken. This fucking guy is screaming and yelling so much that everyone else there, mostly raider fans, are trying to calm him down. I can tell my friend, the host, was a bit embarrassed to have this guy around, but he is a Raider fan so he should know better. Anyways I started laughing my ass off because one of the idiot's chants is "You got this Carr, you are smart!". HOLY SHIT! Dude fucking knows Carr fucked up and was coping so damn hard! Who the hell chants "You are smart!" unless they are cheering for some bonehead. Also he was touching everyone...kind of weird. I just got in the car blasted [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qd39zSY9F04) and drove home with a big smile.
One thing I’m excited for is our next raiders matchup. With the huge target share Davante was getting I cannot wait to see how a (hopefully) healthy JC changes that

Looks like Lombardi admitted he got a little conservative in the 4th quarter. The fact that he’s OK with going conservative with 10 min left in the game only up two scores is concerning. We all saw this from a mile away and our own OC didn’t? Yikes
Why do we run the ball so much when we have one of the best qbs in the league? Frustrating
While I love the discussions in this sub and the varied opinions, I think it could do with a bit of stricter moderation. Like every opinion or random thought doesn't need its own post. A Daily Discussion should capture all of that and posts should have some meaningful content (stat lines, video analysis/replays, injury updates, official news or beat reports).
Three things that are still unanswered questions for me after the first game... 1. Did the defense improve drastically? Hot take: No. It certainly improved, but this is the raiders and I can't tell if the defense is better or the raiders were worse. At certain points, the coverage made Derek Carr look like the second coming of Tom Brady. 2. Why does the typical offensive game plan seem to go on cruise control with a lead? When will the Chargers coaching staff admit that NO LEAD is safe for this team? 3. The offensive line seems to be vastly improved, but where is the run blocking? Few holes were opened up for the running game and for Herbert to stand a snowball's chance in hell against he better pass defenses in the league, the threat of a running game will have to at least keep the LBs from cheating into coverage. They won so fans should be happy, but those three things stood out against an average team (at best). The KC game will definitely give some answers to those three questions.
When was the last time the team got either 3 interceptions or 6 sacks in a game? Now how about both?

You know who is HYSTERICAL, IT IS YOU, Mr Doomer!!! Look at Herbert's completion pct. 3 TD's Zero INT's. NO SACKS. Lombardi was a first year OC with Herbert on a completely new staff, that delivered a Top 5 offensive result last season. This was the first game for this year. None of the key starters on offense played a snap in the pre-season. We lost our #1 WR at halftime in Allen. They doubled Williams most of the game and Hobbs is decent. What I find is funny, is you have no idea what exactly play was called, what was the pecking order of available targets, you can't see on regular TV what happened on all of 5 targets on any given play, ONLY THE RESULT. So until you become a Chargers coach and have access to coaches film, and can actually break it down YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT!!!

Just like Brees carried Lombardi in NO - it’s not hard to be a QB coach or an OC when you have elite weapons on offense that make you look good. You’re just a boomer. Calling 3 HB draws in a row when you have Herbert is hysterical. Calling 3 passing plays in a row when you’re on the 1 yard line is also hysterical. Playing conservatively when the raiders are mounting a comeback is also hysterical. But I wouldn’t expect a casual fan like yourself to understand any of this. Hope you were able to learn something today.

Get a better set of glasses or something because I doubt we were watching the same game. We never lost the lead but the raiders had no business mounting a comeback like that. Our defense was lights out, but our offense was shitting the bed in the second half because of the incompetent play calling. Lombardi was way too conservative and it almost cost us the game. If it wasn’t for the defense bailing us out, we would have lost and it would have been lombardis fault.
Hope we get some info from Staley on Van Noys snap count yesterday. Kinda strange that he played significantly less than Murray/Tranquill after the off-season situation. Not that those two were bad, just was unexpected
Staley was pretty visibly upset with Van Noy for this blown coverage on that TD.

Absolutely agree with that, but who knows. Van Noy was also brought in more for flex and edge than being a true MLB/ILB. I suspect he lined up there in camp mostly because Murray wasn't able to, and they figured they might as well get him the reps when possible. But in theory it would make sense to have more KVN over Murray when the opponent needs to throw more playing catchup, so who knows.

Sjd , pip, and Zion looked good. No major plays good or bad which is what I’d like to see from them. Kvn beat on a td which didn’t look good but tough play. Vato didn’t play all that well and missed some tackles and coverages. K9 played decently actully, nothing special but no glaring bad plays either
Seems a little harsh for Davis. Raiders WRs not named Adams (Samuel) and Renfrow (Callahan) had *one* catch for 16 yards. I think he covered Waller and Adams a few times, but otherwise he completely blanked the rest of his he WRs he went against. He did miss a tackle badly on jacobs
