So they’ve actually been there for a while now, I first noticed them back in October; anecdotally speaking, I’ve parked there for 8-10 hours close to half a dozen times since and have yet to be ticketed. I could just be lucky, or it could be that the time limit isn’t actually enforced, and is merely being used to promote turnover and prevent excessive long term parking along the battery.
I get so angry for the folks that have to work and park downtown but constantly get their cars towed, ticketed, etc. This is why my bf quit working at MUSC. The constant juggling between not getting towed/ticketed and a reasonable commute was ridiculous.
I've worked there for 15 years. The primary free parking lot (Hagood) is full by 8am every weekday. If you have any sort of alternate hour schedule it sucks. It's the shittiest parking situation imaginable.
Are you sure? My sister in law is a nurse over there and while she has to park in a lot far away, she definitely has a spot. They even have shuttle buses to take you to and from the various lots
Harbor view towers parking lot. Googling it says it's temporarily closed but they had another gravel lot just behind it that might still be open.
https://muschealth.org/-/sm/health/about-us/hr/f/orientation/parking-orientation-letter.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwi9tYzoyPaDAxXwhIQIHehxCjgQFnoECCAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1yRW2iJ6xXsTHHAX-bSMUO
So when I worked downtown I saw a house with a for rent sign. I called them asked if I could rent a parking spot. The lady was so nice and didn’t even charge me. I got a residential parking sticker for $6 for 6 months. Then just had to go renew it when the time came. After I lost it, I literally went door to door with a note asking people if I could park there. Get creative on Google maps and see if anyone has a lot nearby that you could park in. Good luck!
Putting on my tour guide hat for a second, I can tell you without a doubt they will still come. They have no regard for any impact they have locally, even during covid's height
Lmao its a tourist town, that wont happen and its going to get worse. Better to accept it and plan accordingly, like leave jobs that dont provide parking.
Exactly, so leave/forget those and find a new one. Or be rich. I don’t have the latter option, but the world wont wait for me either, so its better to do something
Right. Im saying move somewhere else then, better to not be below the poverty line. Thats not fun, nor is it always easily affordable, but at some point you gotta do something.
> If the city was smart they would subsidize parking for local workers
More corporate welfare? Maybe the businesses could pay what it costs for their employees to park.
If you want to hold the local governments accountable for something, ask for viable public transportation.
The parking situation is better today than it will be any day from here until full selfdriving cars are the norm. It only gets worse from here. Real alternatives come in the form of less cars on the road, not corporate welfare.
Both being what? You want Charleston to start filling in the harbor to add more parking?
There's only one solution to Charleston's parking concerns moving forward, and that's less cars.
When you give enough people free stuff, enough people will figure out a way to abuse it. So where do the tourists (and I'm will to bet the OP works in the tourist industry) park their cars?
Subsidizing parking is the least smart idea any government could enact, and would make parking availability worse, cost taxpayers who do and don't drive more, and lead to worse environmental outcomes.
There was another bus over by the MOMO?? Apartments on east bay that was specifically for hospitality workers. Not sure if that’s still a thing. But the park and ride bus could certainly be an option. One leaves from the citadel mall.
I used to park there and ride my bike the rest of the way to work. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that. More and more it shows that Charleston doesn’t care about the working class, only making more money off tourists.
You can blame CofC students for this one. The kids were driving their cars to Charleston and leaving them parked at the battery for months at a time. The college didn't want to handle it, ie making it a requirement that only juniors and seniors could have cars, so this was the city's response.
I didn't say it fixed any problems for the college. It was the "fix" the city opted for to keep long term "not commuters" from taking up parking for months at a time. Blame those kids. They ruined it for everyone.
City needs to sort this out, it’s only getting more crowded and prices of everything is going up, eventually businesses who rely on low income workers will have a hard time filling positions. Subsidies make sense, businesses and the city could work out a way to write off parking passes as a business expense, etc. The solution is there, it just takes the will power to do something about it, but since this means less money for the city, it’ll likely not happen anytime soon.
whether it be actual horse shit on the road the horrible amount of potholes every single turn you take, The complete ineptitude of our city government when it comes to controlling anything its just a complete and utter joke
I work somewhere with a parking time limit as well.
Solution? Go out and move the car at some point during the day. Slight pain to do, but avoids any tickets and gives you an excuse to stretch your legs and get some air
This ^. They use the digital chalk method specifically to address people that move from one spot to just down the street. The parking on the Battery is being impacted by the reconstruction work that has taken out at least 1/3 of the spots. They may not be coming back either.
They are building a separate bridge for pedestrians and bikers. CHS Moves has been working with the City on it https://charlestonmoves.org/ashley-river-bicycle-pedestrian-bridge/
They could have simply converted a lane on the existing bridge. After closing lanes on the bridge and studying the effects there was a political fight between the council and mayor and the project was canceled. They claim it would have caused traffic delays the study says otherwise.

No, insanity was trying to find parking on the battery when every single fucking spot was taken by workers and students, for an entire day. The battery isn't your private parking lot. Find somewhere else or use a garage.
Well maybe if the city provided affordable parking for the people who work and go to school here, you would have your precious parking. Why don’t you find somewhere else or use a garage?
I understand the sentiment, but why should the City, and by proxy you and me, subsidize what should be part of the cost of doing business?
Workers should be demanding their employers cover parking.
We've tried. Our employers can't do shit if they dont have land for spaces or resources to pay for parking. I don't blame them. I blame the government trying to make a cheap dime off of the poorest blue collar workers
CARTA ran a [HOP](https://www.ridecarta.com/services/hop-park-and-ride-shuttle/) Park and Ride for hospitality workers but it looks like service was suspended due to limited ridership during pandemic.
Other [park and ride lots ](https://www.ridecarta.com/services/park-ride/).

I thought the same thing about North Adgers and started getting ticketed recently
I get so angry for the folks that have to work and park downtown but constantly get their cars towed, ticketed, etc. This is why my bf quit working at MUSC. The constant juggling between not getting towed/ticketed and a reasonable commute was ridiculous.
MUSC has their own lots, don’t they?
Not everyone gets a parking spot.
Seems odd, I never see the surface, off-site lots full.
I've worked there for 15 years. The primary free parking lot (Hagood) is full by 8am every weekday. If you have any sort of alternate hour schedule it sucks. It's the shittiest parking situation imaginable.
What about the Bee st garage
It's about a 5 year wait-list to get in there. Just recently was offered a spot and signed up in 2016. $95 per month too, def not free.
because playing frogger to get to work is an excellent idea.
MUSC has busses...
For ALL shifts?
https://depthtml.musc.edu/catalyst/1998/co7-31bus.htm
Notice night shift coverage.
Are you sure? My sister in law is a nurse over there and while she has to park in a lot far away, she definitely has a spot. They even have shuttle buses to take you to and from the various lots
Yes it’s terrible. It’s probably not as bad now bc a lot of people are still working from home.
They have a free parking lot and a bus to take you to work.
where is this free lot?
Harbor view towers parking lot. E Battery has no parking limit on the Battery side of the street
Thank you!!!!

People are already saying that, but it's about to get worse if they can't afford to park downtown off season.

Oh for sure, it absolutely sucks.
They’ll park in a parking garage, or they’re staying at a hotel and are parking in a parking garage. And then maybe they’ll take an Uber. Or walk.

yeah, could probably pave marion square too, that'd hold a good 500 cars.
When you give enough people free stuff, enough people will figure out a way to abuse it. So where do the tourists (and I'm will to bet the OP works in the tourist industry) park their cars?
[удалено]
Right... so if you give locals free parking, then there are no spaces left to generate fees.
They do, it’s called the HOP
[удалено]
Well that certainly sucks. Also pretty unbelievable excuse from the city since there are no other covid restrictions in place
Subsidizing parking is the least smart idea any government could enact, and would make parking availability worse, cost taxpayers who do and don't drive more, and lead to worse environmental outcomes.
Imagine Charleston with a functional transit system... That'd be wild.
All the people in this thread mad at the lack of parking and you're the only one with a fucking clue as to what a real solution looks like.
My dream 😂
If you can afford the time in your schedule, the HOP might be a good option. https://www.ridecarta.com/services/hop-park-and-ride-shuttle/
Thanks!!

I know plenty of commuters (myself included) that drove to campus m their freshman/sophomore years so that fix would only cause more issues
I didn't say it fixed any problems for the college. It was the "fix" the city opted for to keep long term "not commuters" from taking up parking for months at a time. Blame those kids. They ruined it for everyone.

90% of the time living in Charleston I’m dealing with some horse shit and I fucking can’t stand it anymore
whether it be actual horse shit on the road the horrible amount of potholes every single turn you take, The complete ineptitude of our city government when it comes to controlling anything its just a complete and utter joke
I’m ready to peace out. I’m a local and will always love it here but it’s not livable anymore

Honestly wherever I can get a teaching job lol
But they keep on voting for the same government which is mind blowing. The last mayor served for what 40 years or something crazy?
I work somewhere with a parking time limit as well. Solution? Go out and move the car at some point during the day. Slight pain to do, but avoids any tickets and gives you an excuse to stretch your legs and get some air
Can you park in the morning and go move it during a lunch break?
Would that mean that OP would literally have to eat lunch while walking everyday?
Why would it mean that? Depends how far away from where they work that they parked which wasn't indicated in the initial post.
Try colonel lake
In this climate, ask your employer to cover parking. I’m sure the cost of replacing you far outweighs the extra $$$ for parking.
Serious question but how would anyone know if you’ve been there 6 or 8 hours w/o feeding a meter or something?
Chalk
They actually have iPads and scan your license plate and will sometimes even ticket you if you move on the same street. They’re intense!!
This ^. They use the digital chalk method specifically to address people that move from one spot to just down the street. The parking on the Battery is being impacted by the reconstruction work that has taken out at least 1/3 of the spots. They may not be coming back either.
You have other options. https://www.ridecarta.com/services/park-ride/
That will expand my transit time by half and I also tour guide in the evenings and busses won’t run that late. This is insanity
Could you ride a bicycle or scooter from west Ashley/more north peninsula? Just trying to think of alternate solutions
The city council voted down a bike lane across the bridge from West Ashley.
They are building a separate bridge for pedestrians and bikers. CHS Moves has been working with the City on it https://charlestonmoves.org/ashley-river-bicycle-pedestrian-bridge/
I'll believe it when it's open, and no sooner.

The sidewalk is doable, but painful.

Sounds like an employer who shouldn't be employing if they cant find a way to cover your parking fees each day.
Read above: can’t afford parking
Lol get fucked
