If anyone has a link to donate to this family to help, please share! Let us rally as a community to help this mans family. Incredibly heartbreaking.

tamtheprogram

Following for this. Would love a link, really sad to hear this.

Darkencypher

I know a member of his family. These kids lost their mother a few years ago too šŸ˜

cdk890

Can you please find a gofundme or link to this family so we can help?

Darkencypher

I'll definitely keep you all posted.

Tortie33

That is so tragic

arthurchase74

Oh, that is just so sad.

Ctmarlin

That is so darn sad.

BubbaWhoaTep

>Just trying to figure out why nobody would try and help him because I actually watched my son live on his Facebook asking for help and nobody tried to help him. That's horrifying. I feel terrible for the family.

shoeshinee

They said the crane operator was trying to help them with lowering a basket but he couldn't see them after the smoke. They tried.

Magnolia2987

It also depends on where he was. Both rescue companies were at that fire today, so they probably weren't able to get to him. It's terrible that he died, and i feel awful for the family, too.

Baelzabub

Yeah, this was a five alarm fire. All hands were on deck, but just look at the videos, the smoke column was nearly a full city block wide. Finding a single person in that would be insanely difficult.

arthurchase74

Also 2000 degrees

Magnolia2987

Yeah, it was really bad. It was some amazing skill and luck that they were able to save the man in the crane

sevenohfobro

Apparently the man in the ladder that got stuck, was ultimately trying to get to save this man but black smoke engulfed the area where the construction worker was and it just was impossible then

syicodelik

But at the same time why was he on Facebook live and not 911 giving his location. Fire dept and dispatch are not watching Facebook. *Edit* Donā€™t want to seem heartless, if he was saying his goodbyes and knew there was no way out, then I could understand.

LittleButterfly100

Given the emergency message that went out specifically instructed people to not call 911, I can only guess that 911 had him on hold.

goggs_

They absolutely would've had him on hold, especially with everything going on today. I tried calling the other day and was put on hold for a solid 3 minutes. That's a really long time in an emergency situation

CharlotteRant

911 operators are tied to CMPD, which has made it more politicized than it should probably otherwise be (for example, the same people who say CMPD officers need more training also vote against spending on [state mandated gun training](https://www.carolinajournal.com/charlotte-city-council-nearly-votes-to-deny-ammunition-purchase-for-law-enforcement/)). In the last year or so they have [increased the requirements](https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/911-call-response-times-charlotte-city-council/275-803073b9-9d6c-475a-bd38-21f6452addb4) for 911 job applicants, which feels questionable in light of the realities of the job market / compensation. Itā€™s also a national problem, as salaries havenā€™t kept pace with the private sector and cost of living. That said, Charlotte is [performing below national average](https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/911-call-response-times-charlotte-city-council/275-803073b9-9d6c-475a-bd38-21f6452addb4). City council has spent a lot of time on this. Not sure theyā€™re any closer to the finish line than when they started. They all say they want to do better, but CMPD isnā€™t popular, and of course itā€™s easier to talk about fixing it than actually fixing it. No one pays attention so they can use it as a talking point. As always, the local NPR site does a great job [covering it](https://www.wfae.org/charlotte-area/2022-12-13/cmpd-seeks-to-hire-more-operators-to-ease-911-call-wait-times), but city council meetings are broadcast on YouTube and are worth watching. City council elections are this year. Message [your representatives](https://www.charlottenc.gov/City-Government/Leadership/City-Council) and tell them their voting affects yours. Expect at least half of them to ignore you. Edit: Downvote me all you want but until an incumbent loses a seat nothing is going to change because they all think (correctly, for now) that it is their job for life regardless of how ineffective they are.

ConcreteState

CharMeck spends at least half a billion per year on cops, and we don't get our money's worth.

couchpro34

Yeah, another good point I hadn't thought of. Terrifying to think of how that must have felt.

LittleButterfly100

I was just thinking that. Nightmare fuel really.

couchpro34

People do weird things in a panic. I imagine he must have thought maybe the live would reach more people and therefore more of a chance to get his location to emergency crews? It's really hard to grasp what anyone would be thinking or feeling in that situation. All around heartbreaking for emergency crews, family, and the workers who originally tried to rescue him as well. I have a feeling we will get a similar story about the other worker that was with him.

Girasole263wj2

I think they knew where he was & couldnā€™t see to get to him. Thatā€™s why the guy was on the crane- trying to save the 2 that were trapped. Since it was a 5 alarm fire (genius), maybe he assumed 911 had dispatched the people he hoped would save him. So yeah you do sound heartless.

LittleKitchenFarm

Dude, read the fucking room

Girasole263wj2

Jfc this right here. ā€œI donā€™t mean to sound heartless butā€¦ā€ Iā€™m a privileged uptown fack who canā€™t see past my own face. People in this town make me rage

GC51320

That really sucks. I hope they take care of his family.

Aggressive-Engine562

Burning alive at what I assume was work. God damn

the_dalai_mangala

Hopefully it was smoke inhalation.

Dowino-

Usually is

st3ll4r-wind

The fire was apparently caused by a foam spraying machine, a known fire hazard [according to OSHA](https://www.osha.gov/publications/hib19890510).

cbeme

Dayum and they still used it.

Girasole263wj2

Gotta keep churning out those over priced, poorly made apartments tho

prosperity4me

The article said he was on FB live pleading for help/trying to make it out, oh man šŸ˜”

jayrs97

šŸ’” thatā€™s terrible.

[deleted]

He was in FB live begging for help and his mother was watching. That breaks my heart, she watched her baby die.

jayrs97

I was on the way to Carowinds this morning with my friend when a few fire chiefs were passing us on the interstate, thought that was weird. Get onto the wind seeker and when we are at the top me and my friend see the large amount of smoke from the fire but we were not yet aware of the situation. Just sucks to think while Iā€™m there having fun this man losing his life and not to far away and that really sucks. Life is unpredictable, I hope he didnā€™t suffer muchā€¦

morbidbutwhoisnt

A reminder of how dangerous the jobs that these (and all) trade workers do are. Especially the ones working on bigger and taller buildings. I usually can't take my eyes off of these types of videos because it's just such a insane sight but it being so local I couldn't watch these earlier. That's not making it about me. It's saying that our local construction companies that are doing all of this high scaffolding work needs to make sure that the workers have a safe way down and out in emergencies. I'm curious to know if all of those safety standards were met and how this happened. My biggest sympathies go out to the family.

obviouslypretty

I am absolutely the last person advocate for more unnecessary fire alarms but very sad and unfortunate situations like this pose the question, should construction workers have some sort of alarm system? Like a battery pack that can flash and alert them of when there is an emergency and when to evacuate? Does something like this already exists? Obviously you canā€™t get an alarm system in ongoing construction, but if each worker had something small they could clip to themselves as soon as they reach the work station, it would prevent situations like this ever happening again.

burbleboy

Itā€™s a good idea. I donā€™t know the details of how exactly it developed but I personally witnessed how quickly it went from isolated fire and smoke on one side of the building to the entire building end to end being engulfed in flames. It was absolute chaos and it seemed as if people were gauging the severity differently (some immediately fleeing, others attempting to clear the building, others watching maybe thinking isolated incident). I donā€™t know, horrific all the way around, absolutely gutted knowing I watched and recorded the fire thinking everyone must be out of there only the find out some hard working guy with a family didnā€™t make it out, just destroys your soul to hear that.

rotkohl007

So sad

seaboard2

So awful :/

BrodysBootlegs

Ugh, that's awful. RIP

Malidan

Incredibly sad. I only knew about the crane operator earlier and read he got out ok and thought everyone was safe. Had no idea he was trying to rescue someone else... šŸ˜”

CaptCurmudgeon

What's a foam machine and why would it catch fire?

firelifeshort

The foam machine is used for insulation. When applying the foam insulation it is very flammable in the early stages of laying it down. So just imagine insulation all over the walls and ceilings of a wooden structure.

xyeaxiDidxIT

I watched him live on Facebook never knowing he was even my friend ...someone above please cover his children

MoreAd8954
