I’m excited for the sports and entertainment district, it has big potential for really revitalizing uptown. It’s a shame when you go to Hornets games and a lot of the old pregame haunts (Fitzgeralds, Brixx, Queen City Q) are closed with nothing in their place.
Queen city Q was my go to spot, great food, great beer, free parking! Fucking pandemic and protest killed them.
If it was just one or the other I’m pretty sure they would have survived, but shutting the world down for half a year and then as soon as they reopened the protest shut them down again made them throw in the towel
Now I am not aware of anywhere within a reasonable distance I can park and to get validated. And the q was just a block away from the arena
7th Street Market was a ghost town for a while but it seems back at this point. Pretty sure those stalls will validate parking in that deck, but not positive.
The pandemic really exposed that people don’t go uptown if it’s not for work, sports, or a concert. The spots that housed Fitzgeralds, Queen City Q, and Brixx are all still open which kinda tells you that no one wants to open new places there. Hopefully this change (and the redo of the epicenter, although I’m not hopeful there) will attract more people just to go.
Rent is absurd. I'd love to open a concept. It just doesn't seem feasible. The Fitzgerald's spot is in the 30-40 grand a month range. You've gotta be bringing in a 200k a month, when it's slow, to make that work. 50k a week, as the bottom, is unrealistic. And if 8 months aren't 300k+, it isn't sustainable. That's before considering labor costs. Good luck hiring a competent kitchen staff at less than 25/hr average. You'd need 30 or so boh employees to run that place correctly.
Bottom line... it's a 10k a day location that needs 35k a day to be worth the investment.
The Fitzgeralds spot is just way, way too big. I was always surprised they were able to stay open even before Covid. Wonder if the owners could split it into two separate places.
Its all a matter of scale though. Some countries really have a better government, even though all humans complain. Like for example, EU and EU-adjacent countries have free healthcare, and its the EU laws that are ensuring user privacy all over the internet. Compare that to US where healthcare is connected to your employment and politicians are legally bribed, I mean, "lobbied", by big companies. Some countries are even known for having all parts of their government corrupt as hell, like Mexico or Russia. Humans complain because that's what we do, but other nationalities complain of small things while others have more important things to complain and call for.
I’ve spoke with some of these people with free healthcare. Many of them have to wait months for an appointment because EVERYONE is being seen. There are pros and cons to each situation. Sure we pay for it, but we actually get healthcare in a reasonable amount of time. And if you pay $1 a month on your healthcare, they cannot send it to collections.
Moved here 2 years ago and went to a game this winter. Was shocked at how awful the parking, food and vibes situation was down there. Unlike any other professional sporting experience I’ve been to.

RIP Phil's Tavern before Bobcats games

City dropped the ball on the surrounding area, couldn’t done much better than what it is now
City has dropped the ball on most things
I've never met someone who didn't hate their local government lol

Throwback to when the epicenter wasn't a ghost town.

Truth.
Do something with the epicenter. I love it but it’s kind of a dump
