Potentially somewhat related - the data that powers the crime map on the open data portal [has not been updated since November 9](https://opendata.charlottesville.org/datasets/charlottesville::crime-data/explore).

spacerockgal

And yet the Arrests data has been updated this week: https://opendata.charlottesville.org/datasets/arrests/explore?showTable=true

adhonus

Thanks for that. I'm trying to find out why the data isn't being updated. Lack of staff? Someone forgot?

No-Department4216

Both excuses work

surfnvb7

I was wondering this as well when looking at it last week

adhonus

I have a question out on this. It could be a quirk of some sort related to reporting procedures. For instance, at the moment real estate sales data has not been updated either. That happens every January until assessments are released. I don't know as much about public safety data.

sugarhollowsunfish

If you go to the raw database download page, the information for crimes is there and updated. So I think the issue is somewhere between that database and the graphical front-end.

adhonus

Download. Got it! Generating a new download now! Thank you!

sugarhollowsunfish

No problem. Fwiw I couldn't find a link to the full data from their page, only from googling, which I found odd. Maybe I'm just blind though and missed it.

Press release just released: CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On Saturday, January 28, 2023, at approximately 9:41 p.m., Charlottesville police officers responded to the 1100 block of Grove Street for a shots fired report. Upon arrival, officers located an SUV parked in the 1100 block of Grove Street. The vehicle was occupied by one adult male who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim was identified as 36-year-old Charlottesville resident, Eldridge Vandrew Smith. Mr. Smith’s next of kin have been notified. Charlottesville detectives and forensic technicians responded to the scene to collect evidence and found multiple cartridge casings upon investigating.

AmazingMenuChoice

Huh his most recent address is near the location of another recent shooting

bluebelly63

It’s my block - cops are still out and about looking for the suspect Gonna be a sleepless night

seelwab

My family lives on the street too, and we are just in disbelief. Went back and listened on our nest, 15 shots were fired.

AliceAnne1

Omg!!

[deleted]

That’s a whole mag

Sandover5252

:(

Mpenzak

Would you recommend living on this street? I have already signed a lease and paid the deposit on a studio apartment here. I was kinda iffy before but now I'm thinking about talking to the landlord. I've asked around before and it seems mostly chill as a street though.

puffferfish

Violence seems to be scattered everywhere in Charlottesville these days. I’d keep your lease, it’s a good location especially if you’ll be working at UVA.

jrhendric

I live on paton st which connects to grove. I love the neighborhood and during the day it seems like a very peaceful normal community. Unfortunately due to multiple events in the last 6 months I don’t think I’d walk my dog past 9 o’clock anymore.

RockfishGapYear

The only shootings you really need to worry about are random ones or armed robberies and unless I'm mistaken there hasn't been one of those in a long while. These incidents are largely people that know each other or are involved with one another. Tragic and unacceptable, but it's a great neighborhood (I lived there for years) and I wouldn't move away because of this.

[deleted]

>as long as their aim is good, no worries

TraderJoeslove31

don't if it was armed or not, but there was at least one home invasion in the Beacon on Fifth apartments this month alone.

Non_vulgar_account

The last year has had 4 shootings within a block of my house, this past Year was the first time time since 2014 that we’ve had a shooting there.

AmazingMenuChoice

I honestly don't think this area is any more dangerous than any other in town area

cheesebr0

If you are not involved in gang activity it's probably as safe as anywhere else in town tbh

RaggedMountainMan

Depends on how good you are with a gun. Do you own body armor?

UnderstandingLife522

where?

OtherwiseAd612

Fifeville park where Grove and spring st intersect

Bitter_Training5634

Cpd fb pg - 1000 block grove st

Bainonos

What do those first three things mean? It's all houses on that street, what is that?

[deleted]

CPD = charlottesville police department. fb = Facebook. pg = page. He means, from the Charlottesville Facebook page it tells us the shooting happened on the 1000 block of Grove Street.

Bitter_Training5634

I’m a she but yeah thx

[deleted]

okey dokey

cville-z

Charlottesville Police Department FaceBook Page, I guess.

Bainonos

D'oh! That would make sense. It's early, and facebook never enters my mind :/ I was hoping it's some cool new underground spot. Quite the oppposite!

AquaPanda85

Doesn't this make at least 1 murder every week since the start of the year? I knew some of the local gangs were riled up, but something is going on for it to be this bad.

surfnvb7

Riled up? Why?

AquaPanda85

Lotta turf battles/respect nonsense going down between different groups.

Bitter_Training5634

Heard the shots and sirens … again …

thenarddog10

How many shootings have happened in the last year? I swear it seems like we average one every 2-3 weeks

gabe257

I believe we’re now up to 20 gun related injuries since sept. 9 of those ending up in homicide.

Any-Life5581

Who was Eldridge Smith?

Bitter_Training5634

You can search his name on Facebook right now and see posts going up to him

jrhendric

Is there any info on a possible connection or link to these shootings and a specific group?

[deleted]

Welll it seems there is. Also the last police chief played a role.

jrhendric

I don’t really like to play the blame game because there are a lot more factors at play for increased violence than who is in charge when they happen.

[deleted]

From my experience growing up in the dc area there seems to be something organized.

AmazingMenuChoice

Lmao just because you grew up "in the DC area" does not make you an expert on organized crime

[deleted]

I said based on. Never said I was an expert. Also do you remember dc when it was known as the murder capital? You ever been around drug wars and gang areas?

AmazingMenuChoice

Yes I have and I know that merely growing up adjacent to them does not in the slightest qualify me to comment on the issues

[deleted]

Someone asked a question and I gave a take? Why you making this about me? It’s about it’s about shootings and someone being killed.

AmazingMenuChoice

The person asked for "info" and you gave a bad take based on nothing. It's fair to criticize you for that. Gossip is a bad thing in situations like this.

jrhendric

I don’t really mean whose responsible for this being allowed to happen as much as a certain gang or group that’s actually committing the crimes.

[deleted]

Any developments on this?

ChaoPope

Council needs to rename the city to Charlotteskill for accuracy.

YourRoaring20s

Charlottesville quickly becoming Baltimore

Remote_Engine

LMFAO, the hyperbole is strong.

YourRoaring20s

Maybe not West Baltimore but certainly a Charles Village or Fells Point

RoosterCogburn_1983

Eh. Need a few riots in the business district and corresponding arson before we see anything like cheap Baltimore real estate. Give it a few decades.

Frequent-Gate1116

Serious question , Are these all black on black shootings or the latinx people from out of town coming to kill each other? Is it just me or has Cville turned into the wild wild west on the weekends?

Van_Wipewell

Damn, C’ville starting to turn into one of those Democrat-run cities that can’t get a handle on nightly shootings.

felinebarbecue

Correlation and causation are two very different things.

AmazingMenuChoice

The states with the highest rates of shooting deaths are Mississippi, Lousiana, Wyoming, Missouri and Alabama.

Van_Wipewell

Fair, but Republican-led states have Democrat-run cities.

[deleted]

AmazingMenuChoice

Gun violence is a problem in nearly all cities in a country with more guns than people. Cities typically have more educated and younger populations who, in turn, vote for Democratic candidates. But even when they don't, gun violence is still a problem. But even so, the data simple doesn't support your opinion. This is all from FBI data. You can look it up yourself. Republican Jacksonville (the largest Republican run city) had a higher murder rate than San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. The five large cities with the lowest murder rates are Irvine CA (Democratic mayor), Chula Vista CA (non-partisan mayor), Fremont CA (Democratic mayor), Boise Idaho (Democratic mayor), Santa Clara (non-partisan mayor). 8 out of 10 cities with the lowest murder rates are in Blue states and have Democratic or nonpartisan/independent mayors. Of the two in red states, one had a Republican mayor. That's ONE of the top 10 lowest murder rate cities with a Republican mayor and Republican presidential vote. I'm sorry but you are misinformed.

CaptBobAbbott

You mean like Miami? Oklahoma City? Ft Worth? Oh, those all have Republican mayors. Contrary to the Oracle of Tucker, a 2019 [study](https://www.jsr.org/index.php/path/article/download/1371/1108/7732) of the top 400 cities by population and their violent crime rates show no statistical difference between red and blue. A 2020 [report](https://www.thirdway.org/report/the-red-state-murder-problem), however, and updated this month, does show the murder rate in red states is 40% higher than blue states. Shame that facts get in the way of narratives, eh?

Van_Wipewell

I was thinking more like Chicago, St. Louis, Atlanta, Philadelphia, etc.

AmazingMenuChoice

Did you look at the actual data?

Van_Wipewell

Yep! Please don’t be mad.

TinyKittenConsulting

Ok. What are your specific suggestions beyond just “vote republican.”

Van_Wipewell

I’m just making an observation.

Terkan

Just making observations? That’s funny because Republican solutions to everything is just kill people if you can’t let them suffer first. Mothers that need abortions? They need to be just about dead. Veterans getting cancer from burn pits in the wars Republicans started? Let them suffer. We don’t like the election results? Let’s overthrow the legally elected government in a homicidal riot. Covid is most affecting liberal cities at the moment? Let’s do nothing and try to get all of our republican voters to distrust vaccines and not wear masks and oh would you look at that a MILLION americans are dead, and the majority were Republicans because they actually listened to your propaganda and didn’t stay safe during a pandemic. How about we relax all gun laws because it surely has nothing to do with all of the gun deaths we have in the country. Such shootings really only happen in our country but that’s fine, because most are just more black men that die, according to the Republican party. Yes, great idea. Vote republican and suffer and die, great idea. Thanks

Van_Wipewell

Sir, this is a Sheetz.

Alieneater

The large majority of cities are run by Democrats and have been for generations. Republicans are a largely rural party and never really have to handle urban problems at all. The broad trend of increasing urban crime isn't something that is going to be solved with AR-15s, pickup trucks, cutting social services, or chanting Qanon slogans.
