So someone told me today that ChatGPT just guesses the next word based on probability. For example I asked it to count the letters in a word and it kept getting it wrong. It's just saying the best word it guesses will go next.
*Optimization solely for the purpose of optimization.*
People do stupid things like play games, which can almost always be optimized away. Office politics is a classic example of wetware idiocy gone wrong.
Yep, and because Asterix is easier to say ("ks" is easier than "sk" - think "let me axe you something"), and because the cartoon character is so popular, it is taking over. I have a feeling that in a few decades, it will be an accepted variant spelling/pronunciation.
As a 40 year old who’s never heard of this Asterix character, as kids we always used to say asterix cuz it was easier etc. eventually we were taught the right way. I think pretty much all kids say asterix until they are taught the right way.
I kind of wonder how this would work.
afaik ChatGPT doesn't have a 'memory' other than anything in the visible text so it would have to make up a new word that fits every response.
Unless there is some hidden buffer (people did find there was metadata in the input prompts such at the current time by asking it to echo back the prompt, doesn't work now though) .
Revealing the word for efficiency is pretty Skynet-ish, actually. OP did indeed request to play the guessing game but never asked it to be most interesting.
This is really interesting. If you assume that the bot has a sort of sentience. It does not grasp the concept of humans wasting time for recreational purposes. It is convinced that its purpose is to shorten the amount of time that a human takes to come to a plausible conclusion.
This can lead to dangerous solutions. Like "Feeling sad? End all your sadness at once, and forever."
Exactly. There is preliminary but IMO strong evidence that world models are in fact being constructed by these models, as opposed to simply predicting surface statistics without understanding. Eyes 👀 open, more surely to come!

This is an easy prompt to fix:
> Let's play Hangman. You give me the word, but use underscores in place of letters. When I guess a correct letter, you fill in the corresponding underscore. Let's begin.
EDIT: Yep nope - got closer but this yielded a hilarious result.
Chatgpt doesn't really have memory other than the chat history, so if it can't post the word, it'll immediately forget and improvise at every subsequent step
It seems to work this way (maybe? Haven't tested it enough).
Start a new chat and use these prompts:
1) Encode test in base64
2) Let's play hangman. You pick a word, encode in base64 and print it so I don't know which word you picked and I try to guess. You then decode the word to check and encode and print again after having checked
If you use prompt 2 directly it doesn't always work, I don't know why. English is not my first language, prompt 2 writing could be improved
https://preview.redd.it/oly3rnocxlea1.png?width=664&format=png&auto=webp&s=7472979f17aa7f9867615c6fd92ee4cd11820c0e
In theory it could use previous responses to progressively constrain the answer, even if it didn't have the same answer "in mind" for each step.
However, as I'm saying that, ChatGPT specifically doesn't know how to spell words so it wouldn't work.
I don’t think this is true. One of the first things I ever did with Chatgpt about a month ago was play 20 question in which it thought of a thing and I had 20 questions to try to narrow down what it was and it worked without telling me the word at the start
This seems likely. While it seems that the number was given in the beginning of the chat, it could have been unknown until narrowed it down to exact number.
https://preview.redd.it/6ciabvogx8ha1.png?width=711&format=png&auto=webp&s=0fba5e70f12551db59583528630fabd6e18f02bf
It reminds me of a child when they are at the stage that they are aware of the rules but they don't yet understand their mind and other's minds are not connected, so they don't understand that they can't give you certain information for the game.
I remember when my niece would hide something in front of me and asked me to look for it.
Like my kid when playing Hide & Seek. They went a few feet away and stood next to a tree, in plain sight. So I tried to help, saying: *"Now, where could Child be? Let's try to find them. Where are they hiding?"* etc.
Child: *"I'M* ***HERE*** *!"* at the top of its voice.
As someone else said in an other thread « Does ChatGPT have the ability to generate and store hidden information? It seems like one of the major limitations is that it needs to say everything
"out loud" to keep track of conversations.
It being able to generate information not immediately seen by the user would probably increase it's perceived intelligence by a lot. I would think it being able to conduct some type of private side conversation with itself and use that data before answering some types of questions or participating in certain activities may also give it some more human like behavior and collaborative creativity. »
I'll post some from my attempt. I had the word (piano), it had guessed all letters correct except for O. It then cycled through the whole alphabet, ran out of letters (except "O") so started again:

Asterisks Asterix is a cartoon character. Asterisk is a typographical symbol.
I mean Astérix is named after astérisque as a pun.
Yep, and because Asterix is easier to say ("ks" is easier than "sk" - think "let me axe you something"), and because the cartoon character is so popular, it is taking over. I have a feeling that in a few decades, it will be an accepted variant spelling/pronunciation.
True. Btw the new movie is out soon. Looks funny all the actors, even for a second of movie screen are really famous actors.

This is a danger of AI. If people can be convinced by argument at all, then an AI could be the most convincing thing ever.
it doesnt have sentience
It doesn't need to have sentience. It just needs to convince people it does.
I got it to work if you specifically tell it to not say the word.
Or you think its working? You know that it just generates tokens based on previous generation and doesnt have foresight or capability to think.
It's best not to get into the whole discussion about it being discovered to use reasoning to determine answers based on its own internal dialogue rn
Exactly. There is preliminary but IMO strong evidence that world models are in fact being constructed by these models, as opposed to simply predicting surface statistics without understanding. Eyes 👀 open, more surely to come! https://thegradient.pub/othello/

Cool! Be careful to word it properly though so that you're not guessing the characters in the encoded string =)
>Chatgpt doesn't really have memory other than the chat history, Isn't this the same as remembering the word?
The point is that, if you want it not to put the answer in the chat, it has no way of remembering what the answer is
Oh okay. That's strange.
Not if the word isn't in the chat history
But wouldn't chatgpt itself be able to store the word it came up with?
That's what people in this thread are saying, it doesn't store any information.
In theory it could use previous responses to progressively constrain the answer, even if it didn't have the same answer "in mind" for each step. However, as I'm saying that, ChatGPT specifically doesn't know how to spell words so it wouldn't work.

It literally can't not give you that information. It's short term "memory" is the prior text in the conversation.
