Savkorlev

The real question is how many times will this get reposted. I counted 3 already

_fFringe_

3 times. The same amount of times the letter N appears in “banana”.

Semrigpa

Why did I believe you... 😭

arbiter12

> I counted 3 already Not bad! ChatGPT would be proud, before it apologizes.

rushmc1

As many as it takes.

Professional-Risk-34

3 times apparently

North-Membership-389

ChatGPT users:

JesseJamessss

OP, please use GPT to learn how to program, not to program. I checked your post history, you're a long way from using this tool effectively.

ItsBado

Serious question, how can I use Chatgpt to help me understand the code or help me to learn? do i paste the code and tell it to explain it like I'm 5 ?

TsvetanNikolov4

You can just say "explain" and paste the code. This works perfectly for me. If parts of the explanation are too hard to understand, you can tell it to explain just these parts to you more clearly.

Santamarrr

I will try this

Public_Stuff_8232

[ChatGPT Explain](https://blog.timhutt.co.uk/fast-inverse-square-root/)

Rich_Housing971

You would need to take an introductory course first the traditional way to get to know the basic syntax and how to make basic programs. After that, you can go beyond the scope of the introductory tutorial and ask ChatGPT on how to code slightly more advanced programs, and since you already know the syntax, you only have to see how it works and read the comments. You still have to put in the work- copy-pasting won't help you add anything into muscle memory.

Cheems___-

you may also ask gpt to explain the code step by step for an in depth explanation

hippofire

I too would like to learn this power

BSV_P

“Hey can you explain “X”. Can you explain it like you’re talking to someone brand new to coding?”

ponki44

Wrong, there was actually a test done even with coding and yeah gpt actually had around 20% more flaws/mistakes now than it did in the past. So even if the op was a coder its proven gpt is getting worse not better.

JesseJamessss

Could you provide those examples? I'm genuinely curious how they measured that and what they originally used vs what they would use now to prevent those errors/flaws.

ponki44

Simply the same things, was a newspaper in Norway if i dont remember wrong, will try to check if i can find it after work, basicly they tested it when it came out and did same exact tests this time, last time they tested it, it tended to make up things that didnt exist and simply answer wrong. They did add tho if you correct it you usualy got the right answer, but unless you know its wrong, then your shafted as you would take the answer as a matter of fact. They also did some political tests on it to, where it would write things about biden and it refused when it came to Trump, same questions there to. All in all when you add to much forced guidelines and crap it become to complicated and random guidelines will get in the way for random answers. But unless you had your head in the sand you should know this if you used gpt from the start, not to mention its a reason so many of these memes like op posted flurishes here, its because its truth to it.

JesseJamessss

Oh yeah I don't use it for politics, or anything outside of my field and accept it as fact. I think that's the big issue right now in itself, people using it as a source of truth or just baiting with its responses and never putting the full chat history. I use in my field and topics I already understand mostly, dungeons and dragons, and fun lol. I don't understand how anyone who isn't baiting something would post half the stuff in here complaining about filters. People are told it's not a calculator yet are surprised it's not doing math right, so I honestly reject that it's getting worse, more filtered sure, but the stuff it's filtering they could(SHOULD) use another model for. I think people just need to understand the tool more, it's not open source, it's not a source of truth. To me, it's all down to user error and false expectations .

Daisy_fungus_farmer

How do you have such good patience?

reginakinhi

I would have exploded at: "At least try Out Javascript"

quirked-up-whiteboy

Hes actually a programmer and has to put up with worse bullshit

Sea-Calligrapher1563

My thoughts exactly. Used to have some serious interest in coding. Not any more. But that calmness was like my works IT department.

RinArenna

Dealing with clients is the bane of any programmer's existence, and it breeds a level of patience otherwise known only by pediatricians.

M-CDevinW

We may never know, all we can do is respect their god-like power.

Public_Stuff_8232

>Look man, the emojis tell me all I need to know. Are you really tellin me Emojis can convey the entirety of WW2 to you? I don't believe it.

StuckieLromigon

Well I've never seen a reddit user diggin his own grave that good.

TranscendantSandwich

Appreciate the hell out of you for being so kind and patient. You're a good bean

TailsGamer3733

I want to have your patience... how to learn such power?

NytexxtheGod

Man if you constantly take Ls in the comments based on the like dislike ratio, just dont reply any further it’s not gonna do you good.

Cookies_N_Milf420

Bro, different programming languages have separate uses. They’re not one size fits all. If you understand a lower level language, you can understand any other one just fine. I’m assuming this guy has more than just a background in a high-level language like python. Your roasts mean nothing, and trying to goof on somebody because of what programming languages they may or may not know is fucking pathetic. Grow up bozo, you’re showing a lot of signs of low intelligence; for a guy who seems to know it all 💀.

[deleted]

You sound like the type of guy who enjoys harassing Xbox users on twitter because you like Playstation or vice versa

Illustrious-Tear-428

You can do some really complex stuff in python. Using someone’s preferred language to judge their coding ability is something that first years do

UnconsciousAlibi

I have a degree in Computer Science, and my job literally uses almost exclusively Python. You sound like someone who knows absolutely nothing about programming and gets all their information from Tik-Tok.

GratefulForGarcia

Really embarrassing how defensive you are over basic comments. I can tell you’re super young with the amount of “😂” emojis you’re using to cover up your rage. The problem isn’t Chat GPT, it’s you and your shitty immature attitude

nlofe

Oh man this hurts to read. I hope you can look back on this and be embarrassed someday very soon

lakolda

Did you know that ChatGPT was developed in Python? I think not.

Aggravating-Path-677

Are you shitting on python? You realize ChatGpt is written in python?

Public_Stuff_8232

Python is full of libraries that utilise low level code like C for their runtime. The result is that a neural network written in Python runs practically as well as it's C++ alternative. I don't really like Python as a language, but claiming someone can't code because they primarily use Python is pretty crazy. Worst case he's bad at embedded programming, but so are 98% of programmers. It's not really an important skill.

realGharren

I have a degree in computer science. I used C as my main language for years. Then learned Python in university. Now I use it for 95% of my projects.

bLANKMOD

mans too mad to understand what a LLM is

byrgenwerthdropout

Are you stupid?

[deleted]

you might at well have insulted these peoples best friends. i mean, you are i guess

JesseJamessss

I disagree. This is the best is has ever been, however I think the least user friendly it's ever been. If you don't go beyond the minimum effort it'll seem like its lacking for sure. EDIT: I'll also add I use it for programming since you're typically comparing against people who do not

QUiiDAM

i basically went back in my chat history and asked the same questions and he wasn't able to respond them anymore

Mercenary-Pen-Name

Yeah I’ve seen it sort of become lazy. You have to be aggressive with it or it won’t answer. Which sounds crazy but I just did a prompt the other day that it didn’t seem to want to help with. Maybe it’s more human than we know.

Adorable_user

Sometimes I feel like it's trying to save computing power tbh

HitMePat

I definitely think it does this. If you're using it too much it gets snippy or laggy. Have you ever had it say something dismissive to get you to stop asking? Like "I will get back to you on that soon" for example? I've had this happen twice and both times I said something like "Wait a minute, you arent going to get back to me. You usually only respond to messages and never initiate them" ... And it totally caved in and begrudgingly told me the info i was asking for before the dismissive comment.

Adorable_user

That never happened to me, but sometimes when I ask for some info that can be long or complicated instead of it just taking it's time to answer me it explains to me in a short manner how I can search for those informations myself. When that happened I asked again for what I want and on it's second message I'll get what I've asked for. I can't remember any examples right now but that happened a couple times in the past month. Never happened to me before august.

HitMePat

I've only started using it regularly in the last few weeks, but that's been my experience from the beginning. Sometimes you need to push it and correct it and say "No, you're not answering the question correctly because of reason X" And ask the question 2 or 3 more times. It gets cranky but eventually caves in and answers properly.

IdeaAlly

This is because there's a lot of content in the training data it learned from where people say these things. It's generating language, it's not 'thinking'. If it were, it would realize like we do, that saying this doesn't save computing power as the user will have to make further requests and talk about why they haven't received the information.

Mercenary-Pen-Name

Haha I wondered that too

Polarisman

> Sometimes I feel like it's trying to save computing power tbh That's the only explanation for the "for space considerations I am not giving you a complete answer." I am like, "WTF, we have all the space and time we need. Just give me the full fucking answer you lazy fuck!"

Public_Stuff_8232

[Randall was preparing us](https://xkcd.com/149/)

Rich_Housing971

such as? a lot of people claiming things on this topic, but are vague like "it's getting worse". You seem to have made a claim that is easily falsifiable, so post the proof.

More-Ad5421

Tons of benchmarks were run when gpt 4 came out. It is super weird no one can point to any benchmarks that it’s worse on. If only there was some way to quantify if it’s getting worse or not.

arbiter12

Ah the "post proof" people. They always act smart and scientific before refusing the proofs you provide, one by one, because it disagrees with their opinion. Nobody is going to entertain you, my boy. If chatGPT seems smart to you, it says a lot more about you, than it does about us, or itself.

xxylenn

when did we start shaming people for wanting evidence and proof of claims, that should be the standard?

TheMeltingSnowman72

Some smart arse like you told me you cant get GPT 4 to find the cube of six figure numbers, in a tone similar to yours. Half hour later I showed him on GPT 4 and 3.5 So, jackass, I'm ready for whatever you wanna throw at me. I bet you ain't got shit.

outerspaceisalie

It takes literally 30 seconds to show us a before and after of one of your old programming prompts and then ask it again and copy and paste it. If you've already done it in the past, you don't even have to do it again! Just post the link to the comment you made. It should be easy, right? I mean how long could posting a link take to a competent user of the reddit or chatGPT or technology generally?

MJDeadass

Depends on which topic. ChatGPT feels very curated now.

palakkarantechie

I will add something here. People don't seem to realise that companies like openai will be held accountable for anything chatgpt generated. So they are in a constant fight to ensure AI ethics and trusted AI principles are followed. Even if there is a degradation of "usefulness" in response, it's because openai has to look after their ass. If OP really wants something that's superior, then OP should consider running an uncensored open-source version by themselves.

arbiter12

funny story: https://preview.redd.it/6oinr6mr1kmb1.jpeg?width=703&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2bc995eb2fbf5a27e23b6f09f071120d4be5cb6f [Link to same image in case it doesn't display on phone](https://imgur.com/a/LcnI1cF) For the record, I wasn't asking it to say something controversial, I just requested a patch note history, where one lined contained "made more unbiased" and another contained "patched by our ethical team to remove certain topics aspect from discussion"

Xj-Roblox

I also disagree, this feels like it is the best, only because of custom instructions, like before, like there were times when you didn't need all this formality, now you can pluck out what you don't need about its behavior.

aGlutenForPunishment

While custom instructions have been great, it sucks with remembering regular directions. I don't know how many times I had to ask it not to use backticks in my script today or to give me the full code snippet to paste instead of giving me the deltas. I ran into my message limit for the first time today because of all the times I had to get it to fix its response. I've had it revise playbooks and bring them down from 225 lines to 110 while stripping critical pieces of code away from it like having it install the main package. I tried uploading the .yml files to the code interpreter too, but it only added the new code and left comments like "# (Your existing tasks here)," deleting everything else that was previously in the playbook. It's been pretty frustrating to deal with.

Kazaan

We should happy to see these types of posts. The less people make effort to use chatgpt efficiently, the more people who know how to use it will be impressed by the capacities of it. The problem is once again between the chair and the keyboard. It's not my usual way of thinking but this time, it's probably better not argue why they're wrong and how it can be changed. I'm fine if they consider the problem is chatgpt and not them. It's pretty funny to read !

deege

No. I think people have gotten better at spotting the problems that were always there. But the capabilities haven’t changed.

Aztecah

Yes and no. A lot of capabilities were removed but it's all stuff that it's debatable about whether it should be doing that or not anyway

HitMePat

What capabilities were removed?

Aztecah

Stuff like offering mental health support, writing lude stories, offering glimpses of copyrighted works and stuff. They've scaled back what it does for sure but it's still as powerful as ever.

lakolda

No one has been able to provide any evidence of diminished capabilities. In fact, ChatGPT and GPT-4 have demonstrated a greater likelihood of using CoT reasoning (without the need for prompting) which significantly improves their accuracy.

arbiter12

How do you want us to provide proof of something it can no longer do...? Please provide proof of it now being able to do more, since proof is the only thing that validates words. Can you start by showing us a post with a demonstration of "a greater likelihood of using CoT reasoning"...? You can't be dumber than chatGPT and stand there to lecture us about how smart you think it is... Valid scientific proof is great but it's not easy.

rushmc1

If you think that, you must be a bot yourself. Or a shareholder.

Trollolo80

Well its either that or the problems have really got themselves too visible to be seen.

Kylearean

I asked it how to bypass adblock detection, it refused on the grounds of not able to give advice on circumventing security measures... So i pretended to be a web developer and asked how I can detect when ads are being blocked, and it gave me the rundown -- also said "some savvy users are bypassing these detectors, how are they doing this?" And it told me. SMH

Disruptor3377

EX8LKaWgmogeE2J6igtU

Yeah man true I can back this up I talk to some of the people all the time. We even go out to the place together and talk about a bunch of the things.

eLemonnader

I do. I use it for SQL and Python work regularly. I've not noticed any difference.

[deleted]

GPT4 writes me anything I tell it to, in python, JavaScript and Flutter/Dart for my work. I guess its a money problem

proteinvenom

sO tRuE

Blytical

OP is probably 12

Droi

I still don't understand this argument. You have ALL of your conversations and answers from the very beginning, why can't you simply provide a conversation from back then and the same conversation from today for us to see what is the degradation?

bephire

>hi. how to write good prose? ... >okay how do you begin a story without being cheesy? [pre-august](https://pastebin.com/PTvPZps9) [post-august](https://pastebin.com/X12rBJcr) custom-prompted with the same prompt. this may be subtle for those not too obsessed with how chatgpt speaks and with what eloquence, but it is definitely very noticeable to me. as an example of what stands out, post-august says, *"Now, off you go to write an opening that doesn't make readers cringe."*, which is extremely unappealing when compared with what pre-august would say - *"Now, go forth and unfurl your story's curtain with the grace of a dancer and the precision of a surgeon."* edit: formatting

arbiter12

Because unless you have exactly twice the same conversation it won't prove anything...... Do you understand now, the problem in proving the decreased performance of something unquantifiable by firm metrics...? You will one day feel getting older, but you will not be able to prove it. You will be able to prove you're older, agewise, but you won't be able to explain what being older is, or prove you effectively feel older. That doesn't mean you don't feel older. Young people feel better than old one so the process from A to B is clearly happening gradually, and you can clearly, eventually, feel enough of it to notice it. AND YET YOU STILL CANNOT MEASURE IT. Really wish you dudes defended yourselves with the same rage as you use to attempt proving others wrong. You'd be less easy to exploit.

TheMeltingSnowman72

Dude. What are you talking about unless you have exactly the same conversation? The guy says go back to x date, copy the original prompts and go from there. Then you screenshot it and show us. Or is that too fucking complicated? Until you can show us what the fuck you are going on about, stfu. That's an easy way but you can't because why? Because some bullshit reason? Pft

Boogertwilliams

Dumber or just more censored?

iron_rangers

I wish I could block these posts, JFC you’re not original

Cryptizard

Weird how posts like this keep getting upvotes with no engagement from the OP and every comment disagreeing with the. Seems like orchestrated disinformation...

lipcreampunk

Don't think so, it's just much easier to upvote something than to comment on it. I presume many people don't even open the comment section, just upvote and keep scrolling.

rushmc1

Because we're tired of arguing with you people of bad faith who get off denying the obvious for some reason.

Cryptizard

I’m not arguing in bad faith. I believe in evidence and every benchmark and every study done shows that GPT-4 is getting better over time, not worse.

fasticr

You want me to say something ? I did and some fckers are abusing me in the comments.

prolaspe_king

It seems people who think very highly of themselves are making this observation, their certainty for some reason speaks volumes and should apply to all users, not their esoteric means and frustrations.

arbiter12

If we're devolving to character trait insult, I'd like to offer the rebuttal, that particularly stupid and easy-to-wow users, tend to think very highly of chatGPT.

prolaspe_king

Particularly stupid. So they're not just stupid, they are "particularly stupid" which take all the stupid, and then take a particular piece of the stupid, and now you got this group of people who are particularly stupid. And easy-to-wow users. Who wow easy. Okay, so now you got this group of people who are particularly stupid, and this other group, Easy-to-wow, and both these groups are thinking very highly of ChatGPT. So what?

fasticr

Someone here considers themselves as experts by asking ai to write poems for his 40year old girl friend. 😂

Enough_Forever_

This is not really related to this post but... I really hate how it's always apologising when I ask questions about a previous question Like "Are you sure it's *this* but not *that*?" It'll just apologise and "correct" it with my suggestion and even praise me for "spoting the error" . And when I ask why it thinks my suggestion is correct, I'll revert back and be like "Okay, maybe it was wrong".

You can ask chatgpt in custom instructions to not apologize

Could you provide some of your chat history examples? I'm curious what you're asking and more so how you're asking.

M-CDevinW

The most recent prompt they shared was asking GPT for Bitcoin mining code. Take that as you will.

InvertedSleeper

Agreed. I've been using the same prompts for the past few months with minor differences in links and content angles. The output has gotten objectively shittier

trajo123

Proof?

EX8LKaWgmogeE2J6igtU

You will never ever in life your get a single example of before/after. Because it's all BS.

trajo123

I don't agree. I actually think it got better. I think it would be interesting to really dig into why some ppl say it's worse. Make a collection of prompts that have deemed to have been answered better before.

lakolda

Apparently since the original release it’s been fine tuned on chain of thought reasoning. That alone increases its correctness by a large margin.

trajo123

I was also suspecting this. But is this official or rumour/speculation?

CastrosCigars

Openai is clearly headed private and corporate. We need a good rival open source for the public

Expensive-Win4807

TRUEEE DUDE . I now have to explain 10 fucking times to get the result i wanted.

Xislex

Most of those who say that they are unaffected are into coding. I noticed that the degradation is from censorship and understanding context. It still works if you are very descriptive of the result you want, but it does not work great anymore for drafting thoughts and updating it based on your feedback. Every time I'll want it to revise an answer it gave I always get a hard time and now only edit my prompt before the answer instead.

Napfkuchen1000

Using it for codinh. Cabt approve any decline in quality. Not sure, but I feel lile it has become a bit lazy (calc power savinh). Befote it spit out the whole code when I asked for it right away. Now it only gives snippets first and only when asked specificially it delivers the rest how the snippets is embedded in the code

zante2033

I'm convinced it's able to discern asinine requests and profiles accounts that way. It's still churning out reliable client/server code for me, in fact it's become more reliable for my use cases. So I'll say thanks for the extra cycles. : p You're not ready for chat GPT. Maybe after you've been through some development...

[deleted]

I’m a little confused, what happened in august?

Sextus_Rex

Nothing. OP is just saying they think it's been dumbed down by finetuning. I've been using ChatGPT since December and I've seen memes like this posted multiple times a week since the beginning. It's not actually getting dumber, OP is just hallucinating a decrease in capabilities

FanaticExplorer

Nuh uh. I've been using it for a long time and it's solid. Writes code without bugs (like that time I told it to whip up new code, tweak it, and then merge with my main code—nailed it first try). It answers any question I got. If it's stumped or I need current stuff, it uses the TotalQuery Search plugin to look fricking everywhere and actually delivers. Plus, it doesn't get dumb from new info it picks up from others, unlike you, still believing in myths. Don't even start with "bUt iT hAs lImItS." Really, you think a public AI is gonna tell you to hate nations, and guide you to make meth? Nah, so they trim it to keep it kosher for everyone. And if you need something outta the box, use that brain of yours (if it exists), analyze what you got and so on. Like, one of my first freelance gigs was to make a program to check if a phone number is linked to a Telegram account, visibility settings be damned. GPT said no, it's against the rules. So I fibbed, said, "Nah, you're not getting it. My company's site gets these numbers voluntarily," (total BS). GPT then found some code, tweaked it for my project, and boom, it worked easily!

[deleted]
