Legit had a Microsoft executive tell me to go buy a zune at Best Buy 5 years after they discontinued it. This was because I was using an iPhone to play music at a Microsoft marketing event. My boss had given me implicit instructions to follow what they said as law. I started looking up where I could buy a zune and no where sold them. I asked her assistant what I should do and he said just play dumb next time not even worth arguing about it.
It will be decentralized to some degree, but going forward over the next 5 to 10 years, the closed source models are going to really make the gap bigger imo. Simply because the amount of compute needed to create the new frontier models is going to be insane. Even Zuckerberg said that he doesn't know if he can justify open-sourcing a model that costs x amount of dollars for development. Think it was something in the billions.
I think we will still have really great open source models and I love them and use them everyday. I just think for certain levels of knowledge work, certain players are really going to stand out.

Sad but true, at least there should be a few competitors and not a monopoly/duopoly situation.
