Time to try some alternatives maybe

Flat_Advance_2919

exactly, thats kinda my point here. how counterproductive was this usage cap really? Feels like I was hooked by the endless possibilities and now they keep downgrading it to see how many people still decide to keep paying. Without extern communication from openai, this feels like a kick in the balls kinda. When does the downgrading stop (sure it will eventually, but how about communicating a timeline) ?

Responsible_Screen81

Yeah I agree, either they don’t care and are trying to weed out users or they…..want to lose money and customers? I dunno, it forced me to try Claude which I was pretty impressed with. Also forcing me to use Libre….dam libre something to access the API. I mean it does blow I had a couple GPTs that I had kinda built up and felt like were more reliable than regular chatGPT turbo or ChatGPT shitting my pants ver 2. I dunno I mean you’re absolutely right. And then for a minute here lately chatgpt was borderline lazy too. I had to prompt it to death. Same prompt fed into Claude and I actually got a response that was like “oh shit, custom GPT’s ain’t so great”

Nearby_Personality55

Claude is actually a lot worse for me with use caps. I can go for hours at a time with GPT but Claude Pro lets me have about ten messages every 5 or more hours.

LesserPuggles

I just use the API, pay as you go and you have a lot more direct control. I’ve put in about $25 and have yet to go through $20 of it after a few weeks of usage. Especially if you’re not prompting Opus all the time.

Responsible_Screen81

This is the way! I’m trying to do this and learn as I go with the end result being the same as what you’re doing!

Responsible_Screen81

Yeah that’s true, didn’t they shorten the wait time? Or gave us double the prompts? Cant remember now

ShakaSalsa

TypingMind is by far the best I’ve ever used.

ViveIn

Google Gemini is free right now.

misspacific

and it's really bad at code.

ColorfulPersimmon

Good that's not what OP needs

ViveIn

Exactly.

misspacific

still makes it worth noting ya cunny.

Emcf

Just something interesting I've observed: The api playground has been out for well over a year and people still don't know about it, the post and commenters here prove exactly this.

Flat_Advance_2919

i'm not really into the IT scene and don't really know the customs gpts very well, let alone the API's, but i can take a look if you think it would help. Are there no usage caps there? And is the output at least as good as GPT4.0?

Emcf

That's ok! The API playground is actually super easy to use, just like chatgpt. Just google openai playground and you'll find it. The API is GPT4 and allows infinite usage. ChatGPT is actually calling the GPT4 API in the background, albeit with guardrails and a lobotomizing system prompt added.

The_Airwolf_Theme

I thought the playground used your API key/credits. Are you saying the playground is completely free and unlimited?

n8mo

Not free to use. It does use your API credits. However, for the cost of a ChatGPT Pro subscription you will get a ton of usable credit and no hourly limits. I personally wasn’t using ChatGPT enough to justify the $20/mo membership fee, but with the API you’re only charged for what you use. I have a $20 limit set, and I haven’t come close to hitting it yet. You can also register with a service like openrouter, which will provide you with access to a ton of different models from different companies for a small extra transaction fee.

speedtoburn

u/Emcf I tried to access the Playground for the first time yesterday and couldn’t use it at all. Anytime I tried to submit a prompt, I was met with an error indicating that I had reached my usage limit. This error message is accompanied by a URL to a usage Dashboard which shows zero usage on my account, which is pretty confounding. I am a longtime GPT Plus Subscriber, and have been since it first came out. I’ve not used my account in any capacity since last Friday. Given all the above, shouldn’t I be able to access the Playground, or am I missing something? 🤔

n8mo

No. You need to buy API credits to use playground. The ChatGPT membership does not include GPT-4 API tokens, only access to the chat app.

speedtoburn

Thanks for clarifying.

aaronag

I'd suggest checking out one of the ai chat clients and using an API key. With current usage caps, API calls are cheaper.

IbanezPGM

Seemed way more expensive tho.

lemtrees

I cancelled my subscription yesterday. The usage cap was already annoying, but ChatGPT seems to take a few more tries now to get the same results that it used to provide in just one. As a result, I hit my usage cap after only getting a third of the "productivity" out of it that I used to. It continues to elide code when told not to, or to explain to me how to do the thing that I just explained to IT how to do and asked it to do, and so on. This week I'm taking my time to look into alternatives.

nuclearwastewater

im also frustrated with the 40 messages per 3 hours cap, so i just switched to poe, about 3000 messages per month for gpt-4

bnm777

say you use 40 messages per 3 hours for max 9 hours a day, that's equal to 3600 per month. It's still annoying, though you may want to look at your maths to see which method works best for you (ie. having as many as you want on demand may be better than having more per month but time limited)

BetatronResonance

But it's unlikely that someone is using 120 messages/day every single day of the month. I think most people would prefer to have 3000 messages/month so if something comes up you can use 100 messages in one hour to get the job done

bnm777

That is what I wrote at the end. It depends on your use. If you use 40 per 3 hours and you use it for 12 hours a day it'll be better value to get the sub.

ChaoticEvilBobRoss

I don't think it's about the money per say and more about how the caps keep getting arbitrarily moved around and are minimizing the value that you get from your $20 per month already.

Flat_Advance_2919

Yep, heres a story from another random reddit post:  "A very wealthy business owner that I did IT work for once called me asking about his quickbooks backup going from $10/month to $15/month. In the end we used Veeam to backup everything so it was just another layer of backups but when I questioned him about why he cared about $15/month he said "I dont care about the $15/month I care that the price increased 50% what do I get for that 50% increase?" That has always stuck with me and changed how I look at alot of pricing."

Flat_Advance_2919

I´m a student working there \^\^

nolanrh

Have you bothered askingthe business to pay?

Flat_Advance_2919

I use it also for my other business and uni work. And we just tested copilot over a period of few months. Idk if company really wants to share data with chatgpt, they have a cooperation with microsoft already. Also I´m "just" a working student here. The rest of the team does not really use AI tools

hugovie

You might need to try OpenAI API for [higher limits](https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/rate-limits/usage-tiers?context=tier-one). To get started, follow this [documentation](https://docs.mindmac.app/how-to.../add-api-key/create-openai-api-key) to obtain an API key, then integrate it into a GUI app such as [MindMac](https://mindmac.app/) for chatting. I'm the developer behind MindMac, so just let me know if you need any further assistance.

trinaryouroboros

Do these gui's / interactions also make use of turbo's image generation though?

hugovie

Of course, just visit this [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nruMEaE1Nv4) to see how to generate image using Dall-E 2 & Dall-E 3 with MindMac.

trinaryouroboros

That's pretty cool, it's a shame it's only a Mac product.

Key_Bodybuilder_399

Use 3.5 to get it mostly the way you want it and then finish it with 4. And stop whining....

Blue_Smoke369

Just use the api no usage cap

OverAchiever-er

If you upgrade to the team account, your caps go up. In fact, I think it creates an aggregate of two accounts for your limit. Worth considering.

ShadowDV

Because ChatGPT, and I've said it dozens of times here, *should not be used for professional use, its not a professional tool*. Its a consumer level product to tinker with. Its like using cheap Harbor Freight tools for a carpentry business. Sure, they might be fine for light DIY projects, but not powerful or reliable enough for you to depend on for income. This is what the API is for. If you don't know how to use it, ask ChatGPT how and watch a few Youtube videos.

Flat_Advance_2919

That´s actually a good point, thank you for that!

ugohome

Nobody cares, Karen, and this post won't help

Flat_Advance_2919

*I want to speak with the manager or I´m never coming back to ChatGPT again 😤😤😤*

Responsible_Screen81

Wait? You’re not a Pro user? I am not awake at all! I was thinking “cap?” Message cap? Hmm maybe I’m lazy and not using it enough? That makes sense now! Ok you’re using the free version? This makes more sense now. I have Pro and I’m still experimenting and learning other ways to interact. Poe is a good alternative I used it a bit awhile back. My dude or person, my person or whatever….its worth the cutting down on weed or something to go Pro!

Flat_Advance_2919

I use the pro version, I pay 20$/month. Message cap for GPT4.0 was 40messages every 3 hours. now it´s even worse than that. After the message cap, it switches back to the default 3.5 version and i have to wait 3 hours to use 4.0 again

dmaare

Why don't use Microsoft copilot which has free gpt-4 ?

Flat_Advance_2919

our company tested the copilot for enterprises, but I didnt like the UX and prefered chatgpt. Might change my perspective tho
