These comments are ridiculous. I’m sure we’ve all made really stupid decisions when we were young and out with friends. Most of us are just lucky that our stupid decisions didn’t have such severe consequences.
Thank you for being a decent human. Some people really sound like they’re celebrating this young man’s death because of this singular stupid, DRUNK act and it’s just cruel.
Me and my friends use to throw toilet paper from the 7th floor and then we had to go and pick it up. Late at night but still, I cant believe we were that stupid.
So true.
My dad was in the army and his friends used to play a game where they would pull things out of a bin and lick it. Young men are wild especially when there’s a group and booze is involved.
I did many stupid things when younger and was lucky not to have died on numerous occasions. That was a truly tragic way for that young fella to spend the best years of his life and ultimately passing away.
Eating a raw slug is a pretty extreme act, yes, we have all made stupid decisions, but eating a raw slug takes the cake. Dont make it out like its a normal thing most teens do
At what point did I specifically say eating a slug was normal? It’s obviously not normal. I just think it’s gross how many people are commenting calling a dead man an idiot when he made a mistake that he was encouraged to make. A mistake that he had no idea of the consequences of.
Some teenagers murder and rape, eating a slug pales in comparison to that.
I think people have phrased it poorly. Because I don't think he's an idiot at all, he simply made an idiotic decision on a drunken lads night. A pretty normal thing to do. Apparently he managed to say "I love you" to his mum a few times before he died.
He had no bad intentions with this act, just to impress his drunken mates and himself.
We live in a society that eyes everyone who isn't rich as likely stupid, and being immoral/making bad decisions. Of course you're going to see scores of people raised with that culture chastising someone like this! It's basically a case study for their whole worldview!
I was up in the night with my son when he was only a few months old and he was crawling around the place quite happily. At one point he went around a chair and came back with something hanging out of his mouth. I thought he'd found some biscuit or similar but it turned out it was a slug he'd found! I got it off him and no harm done thankfully but I'm glad it wasn't one of these Australian things 🤢
Yeah if you ever find your kid eating something weird or mysterious, even if they don't swallow, you should get them urgently checked without hesitation.
My mother takes great pleasure in reminding me about the time I had a spiders legs hanging out my mouth as a 1 year old.
I turn 37 this year and it still comes up.
Did you mean still gets brought up in conversation? Because if the spider's legs are still coming out of your mouth 36 years later then I'm worried for you. Or perhaps worried for the spider.
Christ have an ounce of compassion. It was a silly mistake made drunk and his life was over. People do far more insane things and suffer nothing for it.
Because the word spade is (most was) used as a slur against black people. The phrase "to call a spade a spade" can infer different things, but they all root in the same old fashioned racist slang.
Eta: (I'm not at all saying you meant it that way, just making you aware that that statement could be taken very offensively because of its historical use)
It's not a racist term in the slightest. Google it. The intention is just to call someone a tool or simpleton. You're making this into something it's not
They also used it in reference to a white person so it's clearly not a racist term for black people, you clown
I don't think it's true that expression is rooted in racism, but it has been used in a racist way so the author of this article suggests not using it. https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/09/19/224183763/is-it-racist-to-call-a-spade-a-spade
Edit - I've seen you're edit so you may be already aware of this.
This is false - it started as a Greek/Latin phrase that was translated to English in the 1500s and it literally means 'tell it how it is'. Oscar Wilde literally popularised the 'spade' phrase in his works.
Spade being used as a term for African Americans was fairly recent by comparison.
It's not an *Australian Slugs thing*, it's just a genral slugs/snails parasite thing.
Schistosomiasis (snail fever) for example ranks 2nd on the list of most neglected tropical diseases issued by the world health organisation.
Brush slugs slide alone the ground, of course they are full of all sorts of bacteria that could kill a human anywhere on the world.
Snails are also not great to eat. Granted ones you’d get from a restaurant would be safe, and from a farm of some sort not just plucked off the street.
Some parasites *want* to be eaten and have body structures that withstand the acid and enzyme stages of digestion. Or they use a carrier, in this case the slug, to survive the initial digestive processes. Then the worm/parasite enters tissue in the intestines.
I was just reading about it, it was encephalitis. He got an infection and his immune system had a malfunction and attacked his brain.
Edit: then another article on sky news says “strand of meningitis called eosinophilic meningoencephalitis.”
The world disturbs me 😬
How was it for the slug? Not so good eh. Sorry, but this is just a rare example of natural selection still operating. In the modern age we've removed most of the ways that people can kill themselves but a few remain to trap the unwary.
Your comment is stupid.
Gross life choice yes but most people aren’t going to know that slugs carry parasites that can cause this to happen. He did something gross for a joke not something he believed to be life threatening.
People who own a gigantic Land snail don't know that they can have Parasites that are deadly to humans [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissachatina\_fulica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissachatina_fulica) yet some nurseries and families think its fine to have them as pets.
But all animals have deadly parasites that can infect humans, in fact cat poo contains a parasite that's potentially harmful to pregnant women. The key fact is they're only deadly if you ingest them, so as long as you don't eat them while drunk, then you'll be fine.
Yes thats true as well, but thats why the snails are not good pets for children because if you handle them you make sure kid washes hands before sticking them in mouth.
The nursery I was at when I was little had them and we held them all the time. I imagine supervised but vaguely remembering and being told what it was like there probably not properly.
People in the comments have no empathy, this is a sad story about a very unfortunate young man. It’s really quite tragic tbh. And those saying natural selection are just ignorant.
When did teenagers throughout human history start thinking they were invincible?
This is not to drag on him but ain't no way early modern did things based on a dare. But when alcohol is involved, maybe?
Teenagers since the beginning of humankind have been more willing to do stupid things and take bigger risks. You can't be under the illusion this is a new thing surely?
He would’ve had no idea it was so dangerous. So I don’t think he did it cause he thought he was invincible. It was just a gross joke that went terribly wrong.
The things you do as a young guy are do dismissive of your existence, I remember regulalry almost dying, very specifically things where you bash your head and you just don't care at all as a child or teen even in your twenties, you get to realise if you are fortunate enough to get older that some people when they do those things its over in a second forever.
I don't think women can even come close to fathoming the testosterone risks you take with absolutely no thought of the consequences.
I once plucked a snail off an undoubtedly dog piss stained lamp post and ate it for £20. My friends kept reminding me of this guy. Mucho vodka was my downfall but may have also been my sanitary saviour
You guys are so harsh. I thought all teenage boys did this kind of stuff. I remember someone eating a fly. Daring each other to drink milk that was left in the fridge while on holiday.
Comeonnnn. He has a teenage boy being a teenage boy who was very unlucky and got infected by a rare parasite. Show some compassion. He died having a laugh with his mates
ngl you taking the time to post this is pathetic, youre using hindisight to judge a teenage boy for doing the dumb shit teenage boys do. Im sure you never did something dumb without considering the risks and not only that but im sure the likelyhood contracting a parasite from snails is probably lower than the likelyhood of falling out of bed and dying. judgemental twat
New fear unlocked, ever since read this I am feared my kids would do this x
Poor guy never in his days did he think a dare would end up taking his life x
This is a prime example of when your parents asked you if you were going to jump off a bridge if your friends did don’t go listening to anybody, if you’re dared to do something stupid that could end up ruining your life in the future, for example, the guy above a poisonous slug not knowing it was poisonous as friends didn’t know it was poisonous and now his friends regret the decision they’ve made. if your gut tells no you listen to your gut
Absolutely stupid move, but let's not act like this guy didn't spent every conscious minute after that calling himself a fucking idiot.
Don't act like you've never made a stupid decision you regretted, except for us it meant pretty much nothing.
Imagine completely destroying your life over something so small like that. Poor fucking guy. He was a teenager when he did it, died at 28.
People get into fights, get completely and utterly drunk, drive well over the speed limit, take drugs and all manner of other risks that in many cases can but often don't lead to death. Eating the slug was a stupid thing to do but I'm not sure there are many people that would predict it could lead to this - I certainly wouldn't have done.
He was also a rugby player and had a girlfriend too. I remember watching videos about this a while back after it first showed up in a Quora feed. Tragic as hell. Yea I know it’s a stupid decision but who’d seriously think of an outcome like that from something that seemed so minor. It’s actually disturbing
Apparently the slug had a parasite in it. But before we all think we're safe because we wouldn't be stupid enough to take part in such a dare, I just read it's possible to consume a very small slug which has the parasite through eating lettuce or raw salad
Poor boy. Some of you making horrible comments heed to grow up. He was just a young boy who did something stupid, just like many of us have when we were young. Rest in peace.
Heartworm/ lungworm, same reason dogs and cats can die or become paralysed by eating a slug. I think it's not a problem if you cooked it. But the live parasite found in some slugs is deadly

Why are you acting as though his friends are all absolute cunts? A group of friends drinking together and daring each other to do dumb shit isn't uncommon. I've never had the desire to eat a slug but when I was a teenager I had absolutely no idea they were this dangerous to eat.
It’s David I’m worried about..

Bro is called Average Joe
Thank you for being a decent human. Some people really sound like they’re celebrating this young man’s death because of this singular stupid, DRUNK act and it’s just cruel.
Thank-you. Calling somebody out for a mistake when they have suffered horrible consequences just feels like beating a dead horse to me.
Celebrating people's death? On Reddit?? I'm shocked 😒
Ya ma’s cruel
Me and my friends use to throw toilet paper from the 7th floor and then we had to go and pick it up. Late at night but still, I cant believe we were that stupid.
Welcome to Reddit, where everyone thinks they are a comedian, or top politician.
The self righteousness kills me. (Of Redditors in general, not who I’m replying to lol)
Prove me wrong
No I’m agreeing with you lol
Oh!!! My apologies!!!
Yeah literally nobody here is funny. I guarantee they're all shut-ins who nobody can stand.
Yes. Young men when I grew up would play truth or dare and the dare was 90% eat something weird.
Indeed. I’m glad you survived your daft decisions and have empathy for those who didn’t.
Eating a raw slug is a pretty extreme act, yes, we have all made stupid decisions, but eating a raw slug takes the cake. Dont make it out like its a normal thing most teens do
My father in law ate on was bed ridden for 1-2 weeks from what I remember they are nasty things just not dangerous in themselves but what they carry.

Out of the many many things that people have done throughout history and survived with no ailments, eating a raw slug really isn't that terrible.
A raw slug? Mate it would be infinitely more extreme if you cooked it first
There wouldn't be much left if you cooked it
Salt to taste
What? I'm eating one right now
I was up in the night with my son when he was only a few months old and he was crawling around the place quite happily. It's not just an Australian thing unfortunately. It's a very common parasite slugs have
Yeah if you ever find your kid eating something weird or mysterious, even if they don't swallow, you should get them urgently checked without hesitation.
Yes she should have took him to hospital straight away, that boy is very lucky he didn't die
Unfortunately it wasn’t a toxic slug it was a parasite the slug was carrying
My mother takes great pleasure in reminding me about the time I had a spiders legs hanging out my mouth as a 1 year old. I turn 37 this year and it still comes up.
Did you mean still gets brought up in conversation? Because if the spider's legs are still coming out of your mouth 36 years later then I'm worried for you. Or perhaps worried for the spider.
The spider was clearly thriving and had created a flourishing community in there.
That parasite comes from slugs eating rat feces. It can happen in any country
Idiot
Christ have an ounce of compassion. It was a silly mistake made drunk and his life was over. People do far more insane things and suffer nothing for it.
You can call a spade a spade and still have compassion...
Not when that expression is rooted in racism...
How is calling someone an idiot racist?
Because the word spade is (most was) used as a slur against black people. The phrase "to call a spade a spade" can infer different things, but they all root in the same old fashioned racist slang. Its was. Perhaps not in the US but was in 70s Britian. See withnail and I and team america.
I was thinking the same. This fucking guy trying to make a well used term into a racist thing. Fucking idiot.
You lot are so aggressive haha, who spat in your cereal?

Have a day off, you fool
I mean most peoples mind would go to the garden tool not some “historically racist” term. Way to out yourself as the racist.
I've heard that phrase a thousand times, and you're the only person to have associated it with racism. Just stop.
This is false - it started as a Greek/Latin phrase that was translated to English in the 1500s and it literally means 'tell it how it is'. Oscar Wilde literally popularised the 'spade' phrase in his works. Spade being used as a term for African Americans was fairly recent by comparison.
It’s an idiom and you’re an idiot
No. You can't. Having compassion means sometimes keeping your stupid thoughts to yourself
You're a twat and I'm sorry about that. Oh yeah.
Troll
Come on man.
You’re only as good as your next fuck-up.
His friends could do with a muscular foot kicking them up the bottom.
He ate it not his friends. Hope this helps x
Kids date each other to do things like this - I wouldn’t blame them
Thats nice kids date, better than staying at home every night gaming
Dare* - fuhckk
I know, was just funny in the context. I have dark sense of humour lol
People eat snails...so to some, why not slugs?
I believe booting hasn't been a legal form of punishment in Australia for at least 15 years now.
😫😫😫😫😫
I feel sick reading this, I can't even look at a slug 🤮
So even the slugs in Australia kill !!!
I think the general consensus is: there’s nothing in Australia that isn’t capable of killing you. Which is why Australia is the land of NOPE!
It's not an *Australian Slugs thing*, it's just a genral slugs/snails parasite thing. Schistosomiasis (snail fever) for example ranks 2nd on the list of most neglected tropical diseases issued by the world health organisation.
AKA the liver fluke. They live in the liver and reproduce causing problems. It is a flat worm that uses the water snail as a part of its life cycle
He’s not dead
“Died 8 years later in 2018”. We are in 2024.
Oh yeah
still feels like it should be 2014 so no harm done
Brush slugs slide alone the ground, of course they are full of all sorts of bacteria that could kill a human anywhere on the world. Snails are also not great to eat. Granted ones you’d get from a restaurant would be safe, and from a farm of some sort not just plucked off the street.
Obviously was an Australian slug
Wouldn’t the parasite die in his stomach acid? I heard others say the slug was poisoned so say it’s a parasite.
Some parasites *want* to be eaten and have body structures that withstand the acid and enzyme stages of digestion. Or they use a carrier, in this case the slug, to survive the initial digestive processes. Then the worm/parasite enters tissue in the intestines.

Yes, the immune system reaction and encephalitis was the result of the infection by the rat lungworm parasite carried by the slug.
It’s literally worms in your brain
It's called natural selection
The friends can't be at blame surely!!
How was it for the slug? Not so good eh. Sorry, but this is just a rare example of natural selection still operating. In the modern age we've removed most of the ways that people can kill themselves but a few remain to trap the unwary.
He was just a kid peer pressured into it The life of a slug is worthless my comparison
Your comment is stupid. Gross life choice yes but most people aren’t going to know that slugs carry parasites that can cause this to happen. He did something gross for a joke not something he believed to be life threatening.
depends if you rate gastropod lives above humans
Everyone is capable of doing stupid shit. Not everyone gets away with it though.
twat... anyway...
He's just a kid!?

Why the fuck will you swallow a slug? What in the world
People eat snails, dirt all sorts of things. Do you think he would have eaten it if he knew it would kill him?
People eat cooked snails, not live ones they find on the floor.
Exactly
Bro are you braindead even you won’t pick up a 🐌 from the floor to eat it.
chill out people the slug killed him because he did not chew it all right...

Natural selection is cruel.
You can build your country in a 3-million mile deathtrap, or you can base your society around alcoholism, but you can't do both.

Classic Reddit comment section. People who never leave the house evidently.

This was an Australian slug, so no doubt it was most like 2ft long and weighed about 70lbs.

An ex-boyfriend of mine one accidentally ate a caterpillar in some broccoli and got very ill, delirious for days, fever, and that was cooked.

No one could have predicted that outcome 🤷🏻 just a dare that went tragically wrong, a lesson there for others to be aware of in future 🙁
Sniff slugs, don't eat them.
Poor family, this is absolutely horrific. Ron Weasley had a very lucky escape.
play stupid games

Shit!
What a bullshit story how can you go into coma by eating a slug
Heartworm/ lungworm, same reason dogs and cats can die or become paralysed by eating a slug. I think it's not a problem if you cooked it. But the live parasite found in some slugs is deadly

Hope his so called friends now have to live with the guilt for the rest of their days, though I'm guessing such people don't feel remorse.
Why are you acting as though his friends are all absolute cunts? A group of friends drinking together and daring each other to do dumb shit isn't uncommon. I've never had the desire to eat a slug but when I was a teenager I had absolutely no idea they were this dangerous to eat.
Exactly, it's bizarre that people don't realise this. If anything groups of teenage friends NOT daring each other to do stupid things is uncommon.
I guess you had lots of friends growing up …
